Thaia, unfortunately the link you provided is not PFS compliant since it is a third party product.

The alternative I'm aware of is a porter from the source: pathfinder society field guide. The downside it's that it's cost is 5pp per scenario.

Porter (5 PP)
You procure the services of a strong porter to help you carry heavy or bulky spoils from your many explorations. A porter can generally be used to carry up to 100 pounds of gear without slowing down, or up to 300 pounds of gear at encumbered speed. The porter may not assist with any other Strength-based checks.

Sovereign Court

Slayer 2 HP: 22/22 AC 16, FF 14, Touch:12 F:+5 R:+5 W:+1 Perception +5 Effects:None

Well I'm fairly certain the porter is not 5 per scenario. I think it's a one-time cost.

Also I was under the assumption that you would force the "help" aka me to do all the carrying, though I'm happy to be wrong.

Liberty's Edge

SS || WFQ|| DwK || TOW2

Oops you're right, hiring the services of a porter is one time cost. I'm thinking of the guide. Guide is per scenario cost.

Sovereign Court

Female Human (Chelaxian) gunslinger (musket master) 1/evoker 1 | hp 14/16 | AC 13 T 13 FF 10 | CMD 16 | F +3 R +5 W +4 | Spd 30' | Init +3 | KnEng +7, KnLoc +7, KnNob +7, Perc +6, Scrft +7, SensM +2 | Grit 2/2

Actually, I was just going to buy the services of an NPC flunky or two to get us to the adventure site, and then wait outside (like paying for passage on a boat, or stagecoach, paying for room and board in an inn, spell-casting services from a wizard or cleric, or buying the services of a sage or local expert in a field of study that the party might be lacking in). Porters are just untrained labor, while guides are skilled labor.

I'm not looking for a permanent porter--one that is going to follow Thaia into a dungeon, or one that just exists as a sort of nebulous, statless ghost that provides a bonus to something. All she wants to do is rent a two-legged cart/mule and guide.

The material I linked was just to provide ready-made examples of generic characters one might expect to hire, though I guess the porter does have a pesky, custom 3rd party Feat. That could be changed to whatever. Other than that though, I think they are mechanically Pathfinder neutral. Basically they're handy-to-use pre-made NPCs for the harried GM. You could certainly make your own using standard sources.

Failing being able to hire hirelings (which is fine, you're a busy GM), Thaia can always bully Slade into doing it for free. She is one of the most intimidating people in the party after all. ;)

Or like in her Confirmation be forced to do without servants.

I hear you. To be honest, my experience with RPG is purely PFS, so I'm not accustomed to outside the current sources available to me. With that said though, I understand your intent now, and don't believe what you're asking for is game breaking nor is it not in the spirit of adventure. Unless someone with better experience tells me it's wrong.

however, you will soon find that you are only able to purchase basic supplies from the current city, outside of that, they do not offer you any services. They are not welcoming to outsiders.

Actually since this is already sort of the middle of nowhere (relatively speaking), and she sort of knows that with the knowledge check she would have brought the porter(s) with her. It's like going camping with your butler. ;)

That make sense with me. While I cannot agree with the hireling source you provided as it is from an third party and 1cp/day seems way too underrated, I have done some extra digging through available source materials and found something akin to what you require utilizing rules from CRB and UE.

Footman, 5SP/day. It is also Pathfinder legal, and for all intents and purposes, we will treat it as a Porter from the Pathfinder society field guide. i.e. 100 lbs of weight, and does not assist in any checks.

Sound good?

By the way, what spells does Thaia have in her spellbook?

Spellbook—The Way of the Gun:
__ 1st Level—burning hands (DC 15), color spray (DC 14), ear-piercing scream (DC 15), hydraulic push (CMB +5), mage armor, magic missile, magic weapon, mount, ray of enfeeblement (DC 14), ray of sickening (DC 14), snowball (DC 14), true strike

__ 0 Level—acid splash, arcane mark, bleed (DC 13), dancing lights, detect magic, detect poison, disrupt undead, flare (DC 14), ghost sound (DC 13), light, mage hand, mending, message, open/close (DC 13), prestidigitation, ray of frost, read magic, touch of fatigue (DC 13)

All of which she channels through her arcane bonded musket (AKA the sneaky way of getting a masterwork musket at 2nd level). This means most of her spells are blasty spells of one sort or another (will save, fortitude save, reflex save, direct damage and so on) that come out of the business end of the barrel. She also has detection spells she can use by looking down the sight. Thaia's basically a PFS-legal, stylistic version of the spellslinger wizard archetype.

That's fine though with the exception of the one new Feat he is as compliant as any NPC. If you want you could just change it to Alertness, or something and use him (or any NPC you like--make up your own or use a Rune Lord) for baseline stats should they become necessary--like if the region gets flooded and everyone needs to make a Swim check or something. I would not expect the character to be treated like a vanity (basically an unseen, invulnerable force of nature that follows me around, but has no in-game existence).

GM Batpony wrote:

Again sure, though that is straight from the Core book.

Okay, he can carry Thaia's: mwk studded leather, bedroll, small tent, and 50 feet of silk rope; all told, about 50 lbs.

How many days did it take to get here from wherever Thaia hired him from? I'll need to know so I can knock off the coin.

Again sure, but if he gets killed in the line of duty that's fine too. I'm not planning on having him come in with us. He can wait outside and be/prepare the base camp.

You got a name in mind or am I making him up?

Reading through the CRB in a bit more detailed, you're right that there is a hireling. but it's 1SP/day as opposed to 1CP/day per the source you provided. But besides the cost, we'll treat everything as mentioned above.

Untrained Hireling from CRB

I'll let you name him, also Riddleport is a big town, so i'll assume you are able to find him from this town, or if you'd prefer it to have a Porter all the way from cheliax, assuming speed 30ft -> 10ft/s -> ~7miles/hour. It's about a 400mile journey on foot, and assuming 12 hour days. That's 5 days of journey!

As of now, if it's not clear: The ruin is known to be harvesting evil magic.
"Something" in this place is disrupting the cleric from being able to permanently ward the ruin. You have to stop that "something" so that the cleric can permanently seal the ruin.
