Cyrus Laskaris |
Cyrus keeps his eyes slightly downcast, careful not to meet the eyes of the silver-haired woman or look directly at Droguk. It seemed a wiser course of action than anything else...though he did shift his stance slightly in Nadya's direction.
GM Bali |
The woman nods in response. "And what goods do you bring to trade? This lake fare? You seem more than some coin chaser."
Kobad the Sorcerer |
Kobad keeps himself covered with his yeti fur cloak. feigning the effect of the cold on him.
he stays silent as Droguk speaks for now, but gauging the woman's responses.
What stuff did we bring again? fish seems to come to mind but I don't recall.
sense motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
GM Bali |
She nods knowingly. "As is guard duty." she says, the bored demeanor returning. "Fish is it? Normally I'd not bother one of the pack but the Witches have been having some trouble and insist all shipments be searched."
Kobad the Sorcerer |
Kobad step in at this point, he pulls a few coins from his pouch as he speaks. Perhaps, to save us all the time, lets just say that the search was complete, and you found nothing. Kobad give his most convincing voice.
Kobad lets the woman see the 10 gold coins that could be her's should she agree.
diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20 -- go go 20 charisma?
GM Bali |
The woman considers Kobad and his coin like a distasteful bug that had crawled across her boot.
Looking to Droguk she says, "Your pet seems to have a misunderstanding of the value of his betters time. That sum wouldn't see him through alone."
GM Bali |
Diplomacy or Bluff check please Droguk (you're choice). +5 on a Diplomacy check for wearing the cloak
Cyrus Laskaris |
Would you allow Aid Another checks?

Cyrus Laskaris |
"Forgive my intrusion, Miss, and I understand your position, but I'm certain we would all greatly appreciate your understanding and bending of normal procedure here. Our trip through the Fish camps was not pleasant; we were accosted by local thugs calling themselves the Fish Guard. We did overcome them, but at cost to our resources, and any damage done to our cargo will cut into profits that have already been lessened." the ranger states diplomatically.
Diplomacy (Aid): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

GM Bali |
The woman turns another distainful stare towards Cyrus and then looks back to Druguk.
"The fish camps eh? I've only been down to those slums a few times. Took a week to get the stink of them out of my nose. Fine, fine move on through before those set to rot. Just keep this rabble out of trouble." she says indicating the rest of the group.
As the party sets to enter the city she gives Droguk another glance and takes him to one side.
GM Bali |
Ringeirr wastes no time in helping Natasza get the cart moving forward at Droguks command. As the cart passes by where Droguk and the white haired woman are talking both animals nervously shy away and need a bit of prodding to keep them moving. The woman for her part turns to gaze at them a moment and gives a wolfish grin at their discomfort before turning back to the Kellid.
After a few moments you pass through the gap in the wall and enter the Howlings proper. The streets of the Howlings wind back and forth crookedly, and are lined with wooden houses covered in intricate and
detailed woodwork. Unlike in the Fishcamps, even the poorest homes are in good repair, pleasantly decorated, and painted a clean white or light pastel colors. The rooftops are steeply pitched to allow heavy snow to slide off. Covered alleyways run between some closely adjacent buildings, sheltering ground-floor entrances from the elements. In other places, open-air bridges or crosswalks join buildings together at their upper levels. Snowdrifts lie heaped between houses, but the streets are shoveled and brushed clean. There is little sign of domestic animals, but handcarts are parked outside some residences.
Ringeirr indicates a roughly northerly road which you follow around a bend.

The sound of breaking glass is all the warning the party has before a burst of flame leaps out and strikes Nadya, Cyrus and Duneyrr. This is followed by a flight of arrows one of which strikes Ringeirr and a second hits Natasza.
3 damage for Nadya, Cyrus and Duneyrr, Reflex save DC 13 to cut it to 1. 3 damage to Natasza and four for Ringeirr.

Again Natasza and Ringeirr are struck as Droguk ducks a shaft aimed for his head. From a nearby catwalk a high pitched voice calls down.
In the wake of the attack you can all make out blue skin goblins that had been hiding among the crates and push carts nearby. Another stands upon the catwalk above and stares down at you evilly.

Droguk "Many Scars" |
Droguk's fury takes over and he heads toward the northernmost goblin, drawing his greatsword as he does and bringing it down upon the smaller creature when he nears.

GM Bali |
The rage powered great sword cuts through the goblin like a scythe through wheat. What's left of the small creature crumples to the ground.
Kobad the Sorcerer |
Kobad advances toward the goblin on the bridge, his white yeti fur cloak doing it best to conceal his intentions.
You like to play with fire? my kind of fool.
As he says this Kobad's hand in engulfed in flame and he hurls it at the goblin on the bridge
ranged touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
the ball of flame strikes the bridge sending cinders and burning planks all over.
as expected, the dice make me look inept, anyway snowball spell converted to ball of fiery missingness
GM Bali |
Afraid not. Oddly the scenario specifically calls out that noticed goblins don't get to go in the surprise round (rather than those noticing something getting to act)
Cyrus Laskaris |
I'm going to operate on the assumption that Cyrus won't be able to draw his bow and quiver from under the cart and get an arrow off in the space of one round, but if he is, I'm going to roll an attack and damage, just in case.
Cyrus, having been ready at the side of the cart, quickly reaches to the hidden shelf on its underside, hand finding his familiar bow and drawing it out of its hiding place. He draws them both out, slinging his quiver over his shoulder and readying to pull an arrow from it, eying the goblin on the catwalk above.
Longbow Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
GM Bali |
Sorry Cyrus I didn't realize that I hadn't answered your question. It's a full round action to get a weapon out of the cart.
Seeing weapons being drawn Ringeirr loads his sling and sends a stone flying at the goblin on the bridge.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
It hits with a solid crack.
Near the cart Natasha chants words of power and a shimmering fog briefly appears around her torso before fading away.
The southern most goblin retrains his bow at the spellcaster.
Attack vs Kobad: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
The arrow hits but only shallowly.

Seeing Ringeirr take his sling, Natasza follows his example.
She moves behind the Scarred one, and decides to cast a snowball on the little one, far back.

Nadya joins Cyrus in digging her bow out from under the fish.
Natasza's ball of flame catches the goblin on the walkway in the face and sends him plummeting to the ground.
The remaining goblins start passing looks between each other and two of them bolt back into the alley.
Kobad sends a ball of flame at the closest but it ducks the attack at the last moment.
Seeing the creatures starting to flee Natasha shakes her head and seems to loose interest in the battle.
Droguk and Cyrus are up

Cyrus Laskaris |
Cyrus rushes forward, as he does giving Duneyrr the order to attack. Now in view of the goblin nearest the overhead bridge, he swiftly nocks an arrow to his bowstring and lets fly with a shot at the fleeing enemy.
Longbow Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Longbow Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7
I really need to invest in a composite longbow with a high strength bonus...
GM Bali |
The remaining goblin falls in a bloody heap while Cyrus sinks an arrow into one of the fleeing creatures. They continue away at even greater pace for the well placed sting and disappear into the streets beyond.
End of combat
Ringeirr looks around quickly before guiding the cart into the shadows of the alley. "Quickly, drag the bodies in here and hide them."
Cyrus Laskaris |
Without a word, Cyrus grabs the nearest goblin bodies, one with each arm after stowing his bow once more, hiding them wherever in the alleyway that Ringeirr believes would make the best hiding spot.
GM Bali |
Ringeirr continues to scan the area as he speaks, "The ice goblins are welcome citizens of Whitethrone. If had been seen we would be executed for murder by the witches law. It seems we were fortunate though. Still we should move on quickly if you are ready." After a moment he adds, "Here take your weapons. We are past the gate and further scrutiny will most likely lead to bloodshed anyway."
Cyrus Laskaris |
"Fortunate, indeed. The rules these witches live by, too my notion, are...strange. Regardless, I'm all for vacating as quickly as possible." the ranger answers, retrieving his gear and readying himself for a quick retreat.

You hide the small bodies among the crates and other building materials but not before giving them a quick search. On the bodies you find a total of 18 gold pieces, eight vials of liquid, an alchemy kit and a book with pages of roughly scribbled notes with simplistic illustrations. Beyond this each of the goblins was carrying a shortbow and arrows, horse choppers, short swords and studded leather. Of note is that their apparent leaders studded leather armor is well made. Only the vials give off an aura of magic.
Moving along quickly Ringeirr takes you down another road and turns through a few alleys.
Perception checks please
GM Bali |
Just giving the rest a chance to look/respond. K:Local would be the appropriate check for those who have it
Kobad the Sorcerer |
perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Kobad is a little curious as to what this creature is. the mirror is definitely something significant but he is immediately unsure how.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Cyrus seems taken aback by the sight of the mirror-faced men...if indeed they were men at all. After taking a moment to collect himself, he tries to remember anything that his old friend and native of this land, Sigmundar, may've told him when he was on the caravan trail.
Know(Local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Sorry for taking so long to post, everyone. The last few days have been a flurry of consultations and attempts to talk to people and get my chemo and radiation treatment schedule sorted out. Thankfully, it finally is.
GM Bali |
The glint of light off the mirrored face of the creature raises a chill on the back of your neck. You recall mention of these Mirror men as spies, informants and assassins of the Witchs.
You recognize the creature as a type of construct known as a Mirror Man. From what you have read they first begin being created during Elvanna's reign and serve as spies and secret police. Their creation involves the death of the subject and the binding of their soul into the mirror that becomes their face, not unlike the guardian dolls you've encountered. They have the ability to contact their masters and can act as a scrying focus for those who can make use of Irrisen Mirror Sight. They share many of the traits of other constructs and are resistant to all but bludgeoning weapons. Unlike most constructs they are intelligent and are therefore subject to mind effecting spells.
The creature continues to inspect the sides of the road as it makes its way in your direction. When Ringeirr notices the nature of the creature his eye widen and he whispers, "Damn it. It doesn't seem to have noticed us yet. What do you want to do?"
