GM Bali's Reign of Winter (Inactive)

Game Master Bali

A strange and unnatural cold has fallen in Southern Taldor. The town of Heldren calls for heroes, who will answer this call?

"The less time we spend in town the better for all who live there. I would recommend we travel to my house for the night. There we can rest and prepare but we should leave soon. I can speak with some trusted friends if it is your will that the weapons and armor be given over to the town. I fear reprisal will find them regardless of what we do but at least they will have the chance to die fighting if they so choose."

Cyrus sighs quietly at the thought. It was depressing to think that maybe the entire town would be slaughtered because of what went on that day.

"I'm not giving up hope yet. Maybe we'll get lucky and catch up with Nazhena quickly enough that she won't have time to worry about what to do with Waldsby."

Droguk nods, "Agreed. I will gather the weapons together."

The gnome is looking downward at the floor, her finger clasped in a piece of cloth, a red stain obviously through it.

"I reckon you lot were right..." she says with a pale sickly expression on her face.

She tries to smirk and says "Well, at least we now know it was indeed too good to be true.."

She then looks at the nature and the ice.
"I'd best stay out of puncture range, ey?", the sounds she makes fake happy.

Cyrus's eyes widen when he sees the bloodstained cloth around Natasza's finger. "Now we know indeed... it must be cursed and just disguised to look like a powerful ring of healing. We need to find a priest who can remove the curse from it as soon as possible... hopefully we will find a large enough city to have such a service soon. In the meantime, I'm sure Droguk and I can help keep you out of trouble." Cyrus offers with a smile.

Droguk moves over near Natasza, narrowing his eyes as if studying her and noticing her sickly expression. "The ring is causing you this pain?! If it is harming you, do not worry, Beast warden, I will cut off your finger for you," he offers sincerely, sounding quite concerned for the small gnome as he draws his axe, letting her know that he is ready when she is.

"That sounds like a reasonable plan." she says, cursing the cursed item.

She looks for a treestump, holds out her finger and quietly waits for the immense pain of losing one of her 10.

Beast Warden. I like it, but how did I come to earn this title? What will I have to do to live up to it?
Must think of other things, not the sharp axe, it must hurt a lot, think of other things, but how long is it going to take, OTHER THINGS, will I faint, OTHER THINGS!!!

"Or, if you think you can deal with it until then, we could also wait until we find someone who can temporarily remove the curse from it so it can be removed normally..." Cyrus chimes in.

Just as Droguk readies to remove the cursed appendage, he looks to Cyrus a moment with a questioning look as he mentions a different approach. "The ring can be removed by other means?"

Natasha sits back and watches the ordeal with the slightest hint of a smirk on her lips, not particularly interested in adding anything to the conversation.

"Curses can be removed, my friend...and I think the same assumption is that that's what is going on here. Seems likely the ring is cursed. If we can find a healer with enough skill, they could probably suppress it long enough the ring could be removed."

"Of course, that means her just...dealing with the affects of it until we can find such a person, but I should think that preferable to losing a finger. If not, well...I would suggest you get somethin' to bite down on."

The barbarian ponders that a moment before turning to Natasza. "Which do you prefer, Beast Warden?" he simply asks.

"I believe I will cause many problems for me, my companion, and my friends." she says with a hushed tone.

"We could be in a lot of trouble if this thing causes my death. Sometimes, in a forest, you have to take down the corrupted tree in order for its brothers to grow freely. All in all, it seems like the best idea." she says, a slight tremble in her throat.

"Do it!" she says, while searching for something to bite down on, and giving Tough the signal to stay.

Male Human Sorcerer 4 [AC 14 | FF 12 | T 12 -- HP 7 / 22 | Fort +2 | Ref +3 | Will +5 -- Perc +4 | Init +2]

Kobad watches with interest. but when she decides to have her finger removed, Are you sure about this? he asks, knowing her mind is already decided.

a small flame forms in his hand, I can at least keep you from bleeding out.

Droguk stares at the gnome a moment, a confused look about him, almost as if he's torn. Bending down, he speaks to the gnome sincerely. "I do not understand. You have caused no problems for us. You and the Mighty Mammoth have been truly strong allies. I only wanted to rid you of the ring because I believed it was making you ill and you did not wish to continue to get worse. I did not realize it was only because you felt as if you were bringing us trouble." He pauses, losing himself in thought a moment before glancing from the ring to the gnome. "If you are able to physically live with the ring's curse until it can be removed then I recommend you do so. I give you my word, Beast Warden, this ring will NOT be your death. If you are willing to accept that then we will do as Landwarden has mentioned: Find one who can remove it. If you are not, I will do as you have asked. But I confess, I am torn on such a task now." The barbarian rises back up, taking a deep breath. "Do you still wish to continue?"

Natasza's eyes water as the huge and hairy barbarian speeks such soft words.

"We will not do it then, Strong One, but I will keep you to your word. This ring can only cause me pain and sorrow, and if it becomes a burden on the group you will set it right!"

She wipes her nose, and starts walking faster.

"Why so serious? We got a long way to walk, don't we?"

It takes all of Cyrus's will to stifle the smile that threatens to spread over his face at the emotional display. "Sounds like a plan to me! Let's get going, then. Back to Nadya's place to rest, then on to our next goal in the morning."

: roll20 link :

Nadya guides you to her familiar home, careful to avoid any obvious observation. Once inside she settles you all in, offering you access to what stores she has. That done she gathers the majority of the weapons and armor you salvaged, wraps them in a blanket and heads back out.

Returning a bit later, her boys now in tow, she strips off her heavy outer coats and then says, "There's someone you should meet."

Before I continue are there any actions you'd like to take during the evening? Nadya would also have been able to purchase any goods the town can provide while she was out. (Most things up to 200gp in value with a 1,000 gp total limit)

Can't think of anything right now.

Cyrus is decidedly subdued for the time they are settled back into Nadya's home, inwardly worried about what will come of the residence...of the entire town...once it is known what happened at the tower. After Nadya returns, he makes a point of helping her out of the heavy coats, feeling like he owes her something, even some small gesture, for the trouble he feels he has caused her and has yet to cause her.

"Who did you have in mind?"

Earlier

Natasha lets out a noticeable sigh after the gnome finally decided not to have her own finger chopped off. "Yes, we should be on our way."

Now

Once everyone has settled in and Natasha has found a seat near a window, which she opens to let in some of the cold outdoor air she looks to the others about to say something just before Nadya returns. As the woman walks in with two boys she quirks an eyebrow at the womans statement and remarks, slightly under here breath "Well, hopefully who ever we are meeting brings us closer to figuring out our next steps."

Earlier

As a slight hint of a grin forms beneath the mound of facial hair, Droguk nods affirmatively to the gnome.

Currently

I'm good. I got nothing.

Looking to Nadya curiously, "Yes, who is it we are to be meeting? And can they be trusted?"

: roll20 link :

"It's more a matter of if he will trust you." Looking about the room she calls in a soft voice, "Hatch...Hatch...it's ok they're friends and we greatly need your help. We've just come from the tower. We fought our way to the top and killed a bearded witch but Nazhena wasn't there. We need to find her before she does the village harm."

With that she sits and quietly looks about. After a few long moment she smiles while looking up at the top of a shelf. There you see a tiny man who seems mostly beard. In his hand he holds a large wooden spoon you suspect you have seen in Nadya's kitchen. He looks suspiciously at your group before saying, "What would you have of me?"

K:Nature DC 13:
You recognize the creature as a Domovoi, a type of shy house spirit who are know for taking a dwelling under their protection and doing useful tasks for those who live there.

Looking at the creature impassively a moment, he eventually turns to Nadya and asks, "How is the Domovoi to help us, Lady of the tent?"

"A domovoi! I've heard about them before but I never thought I'd get a chance to see one in person. Hatch is your name, is it? I'm Cyrus; it is an honor to meet you, Hatch. Had I know you were here I would've brought you some bread back from the tower...though I don't know if you'd have accepted any from that place."

: roll20 link :

Hatch winces visibly at the mention of the tower.

Nadya steps in to explain, "Hatch once lived at the tower but as you can imagine a kind creature such as he found no place in that pit of trolls. He was beaten almost to death and cast out. That's where I found him and he's been with us ever since."

Natasha eyes the domovoi but then realizes he could be of use. "If he can help us in our pursuits the aid would be greatly appreciated." she remarks simply.

Cyrus frowns, kneeling down beside the domovoi. "My apologies, sir. I didn't realize that you had a history with the place. Though if my own experience is any indication, you're in very good hands with this family. Of course, you probably know that better than any of us newcomers, but...still. I'm glad that you have a place that you can truly call 'home.'" he responds.

Natasza sits and eyes the creature, completely astonished to finally meet one of them and not wanting to spook it off.

: roll20 link :

"Hatch we searched the tower from top to bottom but Nezhena wasn't there. Does she have any other places of power where she might be?" Nadya asks.

The tiny fey looks over the group once again. His eyes come to rest on Natasha whom he points at, his face scrunching up in anger, "That one is a witch."

Looking over at Natasha before turning back to the fey, "I understand your anger, tiny one; my people have spent generations fighting her kind. While I remain wary of trusting her, she has aided us and has yet to betray us. I give you my word I will protect you from her - she will bring you no harm."

Natasza steps up, finally speaking for the first time since the almost incident with her finger.

"Yes, she is a witch. She is an ice witch, and I for one completely understand your inability or unwilingness to trust her.
I myself am a druid of the nature surrounding you. Should you choose to trust me, I can tell you that this woman has yet to do anything unkind, cruel or vicious that I can tell.
I can not vouch for her in the future, as I do not have the powers of an oracle, but I can vouch for her now.."

Natasza is a bit taken aback by her own words.

Diplo: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

: roll20 link :

Hatch considers the parties words and gives another glance at Nadya before continuing to speak. "Humph...Well I never heard Nazhena or any of her lackies mention another place. She did get recalled to Whitethrone from time to time. Favorite of Elvanna or so she'd like to claim."

At the mention of Whitethrone off of you feel an anxiety in your mind, one that has been there so long that you now view it as normal, pulse.

Those who spoke with a rider:
The feys mention of Whitethrone reminds you of the riders charge to seek Baba Yagas hut in Whitethrone.

Nadya notes the groups sudden discomfort and asks, "What is it?"

Male Human Ranger 4; HP 5/43; AC 17/13/14; F+6/R+7/W+3; Init. +3; Per. +9 (+2 vs. animals; +2 in cold)

Cyrus shifts uncomfortably from one foot to the other, then back again.

"Nadya...do you remember what I told you in the top of the tower, before we went back down to finish off Nazhena's crony? About how we got here? I think now might be a good time for us to tell you the full story of what exactly is going on...or at least, as much of the whole story as we know so far."

Assuming Nadya agrees to hear the telling of it, Cyrus will proceed to let her know everything that has happened: how they found Baba Yaga's Black Rider near death, how the elderly man told them about her disappearance and his suspicions that Queen Elvanna herself was behind it and how Elvanna was also trying to bring an eternal winter to the entire world. The Rider had tasked them with finding Baba Yaga and had transferred a mantle of power to them that also put a burden on their very souls to do all they could to find the crone and return her to Irrisen.

: roll20 link :

The somewhat severe look Nadya had been giving to Cyrus of late softens as he tells the parties tale. After a long moment she shakes her head and chuckles, "So you're all off to save the world then? Ha, had you told me that just a few days ago I'd have thought the snows had driven you mad but now...well now I think you might just be mad enough to do it." She pauses a few moments. "So it's Whitethrone then. Well it wouldn't do for you all to get lost on the way so I suppose I'll do my part and guide you. It's for the best anyway. It would be unwise to wait here for Nazhena or another witch to return. As it happens my husband had an uncle in Whitethrown. If we can reach him I'm sure he'd be willing to help."

Natasha looks to the boys Nadya brought in "And what of them?"

: roll20 link :

"They will need to accompany us. I'll take them as far as Ellsprin. I have friends there who can watch out for them until I return."

Droguk looks to Nadya as she finishes speaking. "So when do we leave for this Whitethrone?"

Kneeling, Cyrus looks to Orm and Mjoli with a smile. "Hear that, boys? We're all going on an adventure!" he says with excitement, not wanting to renewal the true danger of their situation to the children. Turning his eyes back up to Nadya, his own expression softens; he is clearly relieved that her disapproving glances had turned kinder again. "It will be nice to stay in your company for a little while longer. I'm glad of it." he admits.

"I leave that choice to you and your companions Droguk. My advice is only that we do not delay long. Our actions will not long go unnoticed. The trip is not a short one though, I expect it to take ten days to reach Whitethrone if we are not delayed. It will be a hard road, this is not the south, the land holds little to sustain travelers and much that would seek to sustain itself on us."

For once the boys seem at a loss for words, anxiety, excitement an bewilderment each taking turns on their faces. Cyrus's words seem to break the stalemate though and they immediately let out a cheer. We're going adventuring!", "I'll get our swords!", [b]"Don't forget our packs..."[b] and the like fly rapid fire from their mouths as they move through the house like whirlwinds collecting various items.

Nadya looks on with pride and concern.

Kobad was rather quiet during everything. his place here was definitely out of the norm.

his vision have been getting more intense, they wear on him and it soon will start to show.

they fear and respect these witches of ice and cold, what about me? do they think me some demon?

to those looking toward him, Kobad just seems lost in thought but concern covers his face.

"I agree. We should leave as soon as possible...the longer we delay, the more danger we put the people here in Waldsby in. We should gather our things and get on the road to Whitethrone quickly." the ranger answers, unable to keep himself from smiling as the two boys fly through the home, collecting their miscellaneous "adventuring gear."

Seeing concern mixed with the pride on Nadya's face, Cyrus gives a nod toward the children. "I give you my word, Nadya, I will do all I can to keep them safe while they travel with us. Maybe we could even help teach them a thing or two, eh?" he says with a smile.

He looks to the others after the assertion. "We have anything else we need to gather together or take care of? We should get on the road as soon as we can. Kobad, you ok? You're lookin' a little lost there, bud."

: roll20 link :

Just a bit of GM advice (and something I think would be more apparent to your characters than it is to players) The journey ahead will take about ten days of travel through frozen lands with little in the way of towns, supply or much else. Consider the supplies you might need for such a journey. Waldsby can't supply much as far as magic goes but items needed for such a trek are readily available. Lower level scrolls and potions are also available at the church. As far as what the town can buy I believe they have the same buying caps as selling caps so essentially 1k worth of goods. Barter is prevalent though so it's reasonable enough to say you can trade saleable items for their value in goods (ex. if you have a gem worth 50gp you could trade it for two first level scrolls). Lastly note that Nadya will supply herself and her boys so you only need to worry about your party.

Male Human Ranger 4; HP 5/43; AC 17/13/14; F+6/R+7/W+3; Init. +3; Per. +9 (+2 vs. animals; +2 in cold)

Does that mean 1K total, between all of us, or no individual item worth more than 1K?

: roll20 link :

1k total between all of you. It's a facet of what the community (which is small) can support/provide. Assuming you make it to Whitethrone you'll have a lot more options.
