As the party enjoys their drinks, Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury enters the establishment. The Garundi man is stoic, yet shows sign of exhaustion as he walks to the table and places a piece of paper down and details the assignment without any introduction other than his stature.

"Pathfinders, thank you for arriving. Some weeks ago, we received this letter from an anonymous source, advising us of the discovery of a Sarkorian site in rural Mendev, near the village of Dawnton. We sent three Pathfinders to perform the initial investigation."

The senior Pathfinder then looks down before sighing. "Word came back to us two days ago that the entire team has been arrested for murder and is scheduled to be hanged in seven days' time. I would appreciate your traveling to Dawnton, investigating the crimes, and finding any evidence necessary to clear their names."

Jorsal pauses again, as if gathering his will or holding back strong emotion. "As much as it grieves me to think this is possible, you may find evidence that will implicate our comrades. If they are guilty, then let them hang. It's justice of a sort, and we must all remember that we are guests here in Mendev and are subject to all its laws. Your predecessors' reputation has tarnished the Pathfinders' name in Dawnton, so I recommend you not to travel and investigate openly as Pathfinder Field Agents."

He stands upright before finishing, "Be careful... and remember that three comrades are relying on you."

Raevin walks over to the other Pathfinders and nods in greeting to them. While he may look somewhat...effeminate, or at least androgynous, he doesn't walk like a girl. He is soft-spoken and his voice hard to pinpoint as well. He gives the venture captain a little nod and a salute, then turns to the others.

"Well, greetings fellow Pathfinders. I'm rather new to the 'trade', but it seems our paths become one here. I am called Raevin. From what I am hearing, you might need some of my skills in the coming investigation. While I'm not so good with people generally, I am handy with getting in and out of places."

Merevelyn consults her memory, her Pathfinder Chronicles chapbooks, and her own contacts, but does not find much, if anything, that the skilled newcomer had not already found out.

Merevelyn spend most of her time just observing and listen; if anything, her garb is bland and innocuous. Hopefully, such will serve their new mission ("Or, at least, this Mivvy may prove a useful distraction.").

Deepmarket handouts Deepmarket maps

Merevelyn recalls that Dawnton is a small village at the crossroads of a trade road and the Setian River, a tributary of the Egelsee. The permanent population is small, but drastically swells during festivals and harvest months. Also, like many small towns in the area, Dawnton is suspicious of outsiders since the fall of Kenabres, a former anti-demon inquisitorial stronghold to the north, to demons. Tieflings in particular are subject to abuse and scrutiny.

She also gathers some information about the one holding the Pathfinders: sheriff and mayor of Dawnton Tobias Luin. Word is that he is fair to the point of being soft, and that it's unusual that he would hold an execution. However, local laws call for a vote of the citizenry to decide the fate and punishment of those guilty of heinous crimes.

Newcomer Raevin, though, also manages to catch some gossip that other brutal crimes have been occurring in villages near Dawnton. When a guilty party was found in those cases, execution was always the result.

Raevin seems almost as uncomfortable around horses as Mivvy... Though he does manage to swing himself up into the saddle with some difficulty at first, he doesn't seem exactly 'at home' on horseback.

He spots the other newcomer's trouble and dismounts a bit awkwardly. He walks over to Mivvy and offers her a boost up onto her horse. He does help to get her up on her horse and gives her a little smile and a nod. In his typically soft voice, he says, "There you go, all set." He hands her the reins. "I think you steer with these."

Then he goes back to his own horse and again, with a bit of shuffling and figuring out which foot goes into the stirrup, he does hoist himself up back onto his mount.

He does his best to ignore the chuckles and laughter of the stableboy, who is probably finding a great deal of mirth in the neophytes and their bumbling ways about horses.

Wyeth has a +2 Ride but simple mounting doesn't demand a roll, so I'm just going to take it as read that he's reasonably competent.

Wyeth swigs smoothly and easily into the saddle of the horse he was assigned, then gives the stableboy a glare that can almost be felt physically. He raises an arm slowly and points at the youngster... er... "pointedly."

"Different people have different skills. Until you've ventured with us and proven how well you can survive a mortal battle, keep your opinions of how others ride to yourself... boy!"

Not that I expect either of those two will last very long if things get physical, he thinks ruefully.

Wyeth nudges his horse to walk alongside Mivvy's to ease the conversation. "Not at all. Rahadoum, the Kingdom of Man. Across the Inner Sea from Cheliax. Desert, mostly. I'm not surprised if it's unfamiliar, we tend to keep to ourselves."

He looks thoughtful for a moment, a brief look of what might be pain flitting across his face. "My homeland isn't very inviting. Foreigners are searched before being allowed entry. And we have a keen distrust of gods or anyone who serves them. In fact the First Law prohibits religion entirely. I've met very few wide-ranging parties who didn't have a healer like a cleric or oracle along, so most sensible travelers just avoid Rahadoum entirely."

"There's a Pathfinder lodge in Manaket -- one of our port cities -- and Venture-Captain Obo is a good man. But... well, let's just say there are good reasons I'm here and not there."

After a long pause -- and seemingly as an afterthought -- Wyeth asks, "And what about you, Miss Mivvy?"

"I hail from a small town that is located in Osirion at the foothills to the Brazen Peaks. The river Ghataka flows through town, it joins the great river asp much farther into Osirion. Ours is a marvelous landscape, green hills where we live and a few miles to the south the Brazen Peaks truly start. We grow figs and dates in town. A lot of people from Avistan think that Osirion is only deserts, they would be surprised to see how green it actually is near the rivers."

"My home city of Kalmharn lies on a natural plateau within the mahajanapada of Hal'Han, one of the many semi-kingdoms within the Vudra peninsula. A mahajanapada is one of many small kingdoms within the peninsula. But all of its kings answer to The Great Maharaja, a grand emperor. From what i've heard it covers almost as much the size of Varisia on this continent. The terrain is rough and mountainous, but awe inspiring at the same time. Sadly, half-kin like myself are a 2nd rated minority. I have a picture somewhere, one moment."

He searches his pockets and shows a hand-drawn picture.
"One of the senior monks gave me this before i left. "To keep one's home close to one's heart."

The ride to Dawnton is uneventful for all three days of travel and leaves more room for banter as the party continues to mingle. Fair weather and warm sun grace your journey as you finally reach the first vestiges of farmland. You get a few strange looks, for while Marduk is the most exotic, everyone is still an unfamiliar face in a small farming community.

Beyond the looks, though, no one seems to be bothering you. Because of your previous fact gathering, you know of 5 main locations in town; these are marked in the map.

A: Orug's General Store: The primary business in town. Besides selling goods, there's also baths for rent and it tends to be the hotspotfor gossip in town.

B: Hearth and Harvest: The only inn in town, it tends to be quite full during harvest season as migrant workers come to earl living during the fall months.

C: Tobius Luin's House: This multi-purpose building is the largest private residence in town, but also serves as the mayor's house and the town jail.

D: Tent City: Primary residence of majority of the migrant workers, this area is usually empty outside of the harvest season.

E: Beer Garden: The busy hub for most of the country folk, this place tends to be very active during the day and still bear a number of adults drinking and passing time in the evening.

More to follow!

Deepmarket handouts Deepmarket maps

This scenario is different from others. Each day is broken into three phases (morning, afternoon, evening). As noted, it took 3 days travel, and the party arrives in the morning of the 4th day. On the morning of the 7th day, the execution is scheduled, thus granting a total of 9 phases for you to explore and investigate.

In each phases, you get to pick a location and try to mingle with the locals and find clues. Depending on the location, there will be ways to ingratiate yourself with the populace and find out rumors and information to aid you in your quest to figure out the truth. As you find clues and gain favor (or disrepute) with the town, additional interactions may occur.

While the town isn't large, there is an additional influx of people; some coming early for harvest, others to enjoy the execution (events like this tend to be gatherings and are reasons for villagers from outside to meet up, even with the macabre theme). Thus, unlike other adventures, it may be worthwhile to 'Scooby Doo' things and split up.

If you head there, you'd be probably trying to get in on the gossip either before or after your bath if you would like. You can, of course, choose to do nothing in the phase (ie, just take a bath and not interact with anyone).

Deepmarket handouts Deepmarket maps

Four things I wish to explain:

This is a very sandboxy style of mission. I think PbP actually works VERY well for this kind of scenario since a split party can get all the time they need to do what they want instead of splitting the GM's focus as it would for a live table. Feel free to coordinate with each other, especially after a couple of phases to get a feel for the best way to dig up dirt within a given locale.

Also, since we aren't doing this for any major event, I'll try not to rush a phase to go to the next unless there's only one PC still doing something and everyone else is done.

If someone doesn't mark a location to investigate for a phase within a reasonable amount of time, I'll take the PC to follow someone else to a location.

Oh yes, finally, instead of looking for clues for a phase, a PC may make a single Diplomacy (Gather Information) check to get a general status of the party. It won't provide any clues, but could give you an idea of how things are faring.

If you have any questions, let me know :)

So far, we have Raevin checking out the General Store.

Sitting on horseback surveying the hamlet as the group splits up, Wyeth begins humming a tune.

Dawnton, things will be great when you're
Dawnton, no finer place for sure.
Dawnton, every thing's waiting for you...

Presuming it's okay with our friendly party monk, we'll go to the inn to see if there are stables. Wyeth will engage the stable boy and/or others in casual conversation with an eye (ear?) towards picking up any tidbits. Not going inside yet; let Kintampo handle that.
