@Kristoff: Istralanix is in the spot that would give you flanking; I put you adjacent to him, but no flank for you yet without repositioning from others.

Grulk, surrounded, ponders the actions and backs up and fires at Nilfyr twice.

Nilfyr, 2 AoO's as he wouldn't know you have Combat Reflexes! Each AoO is triggered before the attack, so roll well... and you may save yourself some trouble!

Grulk arrow @ Nilfyr: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 2 + 1 - 2 = 11
Damage on hit: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 10
Grulk arrow @ Nilfyr: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 + 1 - 2 = 15
Damage on hit: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 12

And going for kill shots, Grulk gives Nilfyr just enough time to dodge both arrows!

Waiting for the AoO's first before posting Init order

You missed carrying over the crossbow damage, too. He should be down 14 now.

Nilfyr smiles as he lashes out at the creature with his polearm.

AoO (Fauchard (2H)): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Damage (Fauchard (2H)): 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Yeah, I would have caught that eventually <_< thanks for the reminder!

Nilfyr's first slice cuts into the bugbear's shoulder. The second blow is only narrowly stopped by Grulk's armor.

After the half-elf avoid's Grulk's 5th arrow in a row, the bugbear does something surprising: parlay. "Alright, you got me! Ain't no hum-blood I ain't ever been able to miss that many times, even if ya got pointy ears.", referring to Nilfyr's mixed ancestry. "So what does Klarkosh want? Finally wants the rest of the tower to himself?"

You all have actions, the bugbear's bow is still drawn, but no arrows pulled yet.

Istralanix steps northeast of Kristof and swings at the bugbear.

And Istralanix finishes off the bugbear, slaying it in a single slice to its heart.

The only thing off interest on him is a +1 composite (+2) longbow. Inspecting the bed, though, finds a journal written in Goblin.

DC 10 Linguistics or Goblin:

The journal is mostly filled with rants about a man named Karlos that arrived several months ago. Using strange metallic creatures, he overwhelmed the band of Goblins. The man now lurks below, using magic and other servants to guard the next few floors. Grulk only received missives weekly to inform Klarkosh of any unusual activity and the bugbear hates this role, hoping to find something or someone powerful enough to overthrow the mechanical using tyrant.

You guys are done with the first floor! I'm going to see if Auke is going to join us for the second floor. Chronicles will be out Monday or Tuesday, but everyone will receive 1398 gp, 3xp, and 4pp. So level up!

So we do not not have a dedicated healer but three casters can cast divine spells. Likely good enough. No skills guy though. Could use a rogue or something similar. Not sure how critical it is.

I got to play my 8th level saurian shaman this weekend. Grappled an elder magma elemental. It was as large as me. :)

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

Of course there is rest :)

The party returns to Fort Inevitable, informing the Pathfinder Society of their findings.

Among them:

  • A band of goblin bandits ruled the grounds of the Spire. They were defeated at your hand.
  • A pair of strange symbols were found. One was identified as the Azlanti number 6, the other has yet to be identified. Another DC 15 Kn: History or Linguistics check can be made again
  • Grulk was actually scared, assuming the party was sent by a man named Klarkosh. Apparently Klarkosh lurks somewhere in the floors below.
  • The Emerald Spire apparently has multiple levels below the surface, although outside of Klarkosh and his forces, there is no current knowledge of who or what lurks below.

Istralanix volunteered to return to Oppara by boat to send your findings to the Society. However, two weeks later, he does not return; instead, a large hulking man returns in his stead.

He bears a missive from the Decemvirate, as well as all gear requested from the Society.

After the introductions, you are all once again called to Commander Drovust's citadel office.

"Greetings, Pathfinders.", she speaks tersely.

Feel free to introduce yourselves as you wish before interacting with the Lady Commander.

Well crap. My post disappeared. I fear I previewed it but did not submit it. Can you provide more info about the land grab David?

Now back save in town Artemus spends some time studying the rune he could not previously decipher and is able to recall reading of it in some text somewhere.

Knowledge History: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Greetings fellow Pathfinder. I am the archaist Artemus Jarm. I doubt you will have heard of me, yet. And I do not recognize your face, though I suspect I will recognize your name once you provide it. Might I have your name?

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

Bah, it's part of the chronicles for Emerald Spire. I'll send those out tomorrow! You can technically get that from the free Emerald Spire chronicles pdf, but if you wish to try and avoid spoilers from the other chronicles, I'll get it for you!

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

"No need to hide, Achachekite.", Drovust barely glancing at Kristoff's direction. "First, I wish to thank you for doing Fort Inevitable a service by defeating the goblin bandits. That has been a problem in our area. For your services, as capable men whose standing is growing now that word has spread of your deed, I wish to offer you some unclaimed land within the area. It would have to be outside of the confines of Fort Inevitable, but so the cost of maintaining and supporting your property will come to you.", the Lady Commander unravelling a map of the surrounding area and pointing to various unclaimed acres within the Echo Woods.

So work scanner is acting up again, probably tomorrow for the Land Grab. Quick gist is that you can spend 2 PP to purchase a some land in the area. You get 1 purchase opportunity for each Emerald Spire chronicle sheet you ear. You select which hex you're interested in that you are allowed to purchase. Claiming certain hexes offer different benefits that occur immediately upon purchase. From a GM perspective, I hope something like this appears on the Kignmaker chronicles.

"Second... I have two additional requests to make of you, each with their own rewards.". Drovust eyes everyone for a minute before continuing. "First, I believe another set of bandits have already made base at the Spire, although we can confirm that they are not within the grounds as the goblins were. Stop the bandits, and you will be given permanent accommodations within Fort Inevitable at no cost to you."

She then pauses before making the second request. "The other one is more serious. You haven't been here long enough, but we've had an unnaturally large number of undead occurrences for the past several months. Even worse... we've had reports of several spellcasters within the area being scryed upon. We have tried scrying back and have only been able to find out two things. Whoever is doing this is able to use portals within the Spire to send monsters and minions to capture people far from the area. And... we saw a symbol of a crown above a skull. If you are able to find and defeat this evil, we will return all excised taxes charged upon your finds and allow you free exploration rights within the Spire for future excavations."

"Do we have a deal for either of these requests, sirs?", she asks tersely.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Arcanist (Occult) 12 [ HP 89/79 | AC 17/21/FF14/T14/18 | Fort +10, Ref +11, Will +12 | Init +5 | Perception +25

Did we get to meet the large hulking man with the missive from the Decemvirate? that is who I thought I was talking to. And any info from Knowledge History roll on the rune?

Artemus listens and after checking the expressions of his teammate he comments So I can, and intend to claim land in these parts. That is quite nice. But then you offer reward of a free place to stay. What if I plan to stay at my new place? And I was not aware of any excise taxes. Were these taxes created to conscript us or do all adventures pay such taxes?

I really do not mean to be difficult. But the rewards seem pretty lame. Where is the spire by the way? The right to further exploration helps the area be free of any new threat moving in of course. Free exploration rights might be worth a lot more if they were exclusive…

Grand Lodge

Getting land hex.

Stop the bandits, and defeat the Big Bad got it.

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

I figured as such, but since Auke hasn't replied but thought I could push 'the story somewhat', so there's more outside interest besides "it's ruins, go explore". As far as the weak rewards, well, the book's actual rewards are for if this run in a home game (X gold, Y EXP), but of course that doesn't work for PFS play, hence these 'intangible benefits'.

"Well, it depends on what you wish to do; if you want to reside on your territory, that is one thing... but if you wish to excavate it, farm the land, use it for timber, or just try and make a profit off of it later, that is your business. My offer is what it is."

At Artemus' last comment, she shakes her head. "That was part of your Society's original agreement to try and explore the Emerald Spire... upon this contract here, you signed.", the Lady Commander pulling out a sheet of vellum. "I figured it would be suitable reward given the value of Azlanti artifacts, but perhaps the Society doesn't value millennia old relics as I had thought."

At Kristoff's brief comment, she nods. "That is one way to put it. Since I imagine the owner of the crowned skull symbol is not the royal ruler of the spire, his demise should not be any problem for you."

Nilfyr nods. "I will continue to do as you wish, to clear the grounds and the spire itself."

Large man from the Decemvirate is Auke's PC. I did miss the Kn roll check question; the unidentified rune is the Azlanti number for '1'. What other questions do you need answered? I thought I answered the in character ones via Drovust.

How, er, astute of you to be mindful of such things Thunderstealer. What exactly makes a good sacrifice for your mountain? And where is this mountain?

Oh, that reminds me. I had also asked where in the world The Emerald Spire is. Sorry if you have already covered that and I missed it.

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

Looking at Thunderstealer, Drovust adds, "If bandits and evil forces count as a worthy sacrifice, then I believe we all are in agreement here." The Lady Commander then pulls out another piece of parchment. "This details both contracted orders and the agreed upon rewards. Although my word as a Hellknight is nearly law unto itself, I believe it would be in both our interests that this is authoritatively issued, Pathfinders."

Next to the parchment is a quill next to a vial of crimson ink. There are four lines at the bottom the document written precise legalese.

DC 15 Linguistics or Intelligence; DC 10 Profession: Barrister:

The document is accurate to everything Lady Commander Drovust has detailed with one interesting clause: Upon the death or removal of one of the signees, the Pathfinder Society may bind another agent to this contract with an addendum signature. While the housing will be reassigned to the new agent, the purchased properties of the deceased/reassigned Pathfinder will be not be reissued, though, as that belongs that person's estate.

The party makes its trek through the Echo Woods. Returning back to the Spire grounds, the goblin corpses have been set into a single pile and still bear the obvious signs of charring. Footprints lead the party to assume that some Hellknights must have examined the area and cleaned things up, although not by much. Magical illumination is still required to navigate the rubble safely, although no threats hunt you as you make your way to the spiral staircase encircling the spire's core.

The steep stair descends through solid bedrock for fifty feet before ending on a stone-lined room. The room is eerily lit by irregular luminescent mold scattered about This provides dim illumination throughout. A large stone door stands directly ahead east of you, and another door to its left stands slightly ajar. To your left north, you see an extinguished torch resting of the floor of an alcove.

The Cellars map is ready for you! To adventure!
The red T is where the extinguished torch is.
