I tend to turn my nose up at Syfy Channel, but I just bought a season of The Expanse off Amazon based on recommendations and I will say that I am totally impressed.

The Expanse is definitely good harder sci-fi. Season 2 is a step up as well.


Am hoping to get a degree of that politico/corp fractional intrigue/conflict into our game.


Will be doing some scouring over your builds o'er the next day or so.

Am mining into the system and reading over the various threads for reference and what is being highlighted/overlooked thus-far.

One interesting caveat that has cropped up is insight bonuses (well all bonuses to be honest) do not (generally) stack.

So for Operatives - the Operative Edge: +1 insight bonus to initiative checks and skill checks. However Operative Specialisation grants Skill Focus feat for the Operative's two designated specialisation skills.

Now based on my reading the +1 and the +3 do not stack... So for the two skills covered by the +3 Skill Focus feats, this "trumps" the +1 Operatives Edge bonus...

Anyone else have a chime in on this from their reading?

Will need to have a looksee if this potentially affects other classes as well?

I agree with that reading and that is what I used.

Notice no edge bonus for the specialization skill.


@Kris-7. Yeah noticed you'd done that in your profile - kudos as I missed it in my first character creation.

Will need to have a gander at the other classes and such...

Will likely move the prelude on tomorrow - just want to give you all a chance to interact a little more, find your collective voices and glean/discuss anything of note before things kick off proper.


First encounter (+potential combat) is upcoming gang.

We'll be taking it slow and steady once things kick off - can everyone ensure they have a stat/combat header in place like Retsiji does.

All - please include EAC & KAC in the header.

Makes for easy reference on the fly.

We'll take it slow and steady... like a Vesk point man... (ahem)

Messing around with initiative models - running with blocks up to the foes, then after, but might change this up if we find folks are kicking their heels waiting for others (sorry - in this case Ed/Retsiji) and i'm open to suggestions.

Have also linked the combat map into the Campaign Header for easy access.

updated position, worked just fine from my PC, post made from my phone are problematic to update map will likely just give directions.

up and down are north and south
left and right are west and east

since typically maps stay static and don't rotate on us.....you haven't started something new yet have you.... :)

Feeling a proper idiot, here--finally getting around to dotting i's and crossing t's for Retsiji and discovered that being an Armor Storm style practitioner he does better damage with a fist than with his assault hammer (d4+6 for fist vs. d6+4 for hammer). Can we retcon so he punched the Downside King, and I'll rearrange his purchases?


Aye no worries - not like I noticed it either... :S

Likely be alot of this rejigging as more material comes out - those of you who've played in my games before know I'm not averse to a spot of retconning.

It is with regret and sadness that I'm going to step away from these boards for a while. It's a combination of many things, and the frustration with the board performance just pushed me to do what needed doing. I've got some things that are taking a higher priority in life at the moment. It's been a real pleasure gaming with you all, and hopefully life will give an opportunity to share this hobby we all love in the future...


Appreciate the candour and the excellent games we've been in together mate. Hope we'll do all this craziness again sometime down the line.

Hey folks, interesting world and what not after taking a bit of a read through of the handbook. I'd be interested in playing. So far my character selection was this.

Race: Lashunta Korasha
Theme: Scholar
Class: Solarian

Physical Science as field with Xenobiology.

Background not yet entirely fleshed out but a general idea would be that the character was developed (as per societal norms) to be a soldier (there fore the Korasha biology) but always had a mind for literature. Character tended to volunteer for research missions.. A mission recently was to observe and report the cause and effect of a supernova of a dying star caught in orbit of a black hole. Unknowingly was on an unprotected observation deck during the event and the subsequent release and retraction of energy transformed the markings on his skin to be more of a star map than patterns. iris's similarly are now representative of a galaxy if looking closely. And the solar manifestation may be some what similar to the this as well.

TL:DR basically a melee with some interesting background for hopefully some fun roleplay!

Exactly my thinking as well... more targets to get caught in Mark's rat bombs :)

So with 6 players we should be pretty covered going forward - so all good.

I'll not hold the game up much longer as both incomers can be built in the background as the current game rumbles on.

Over the course of this week I'll introduce a Dramatis Personæ section on the Campaign Info page and also link other handouts from the game.

Re: Avatars... tis a gripe - you'd think they'd have supported the launch of the game, or AP at least with some SF avatarness...

@Paeon: Am also not clear on your stat build... Korasha Lashunta get +2 STR, -2 WIS and +2 CHA. Scholar theme gives +1 INT. With a 10 point buy and baseline in 10 in all stats you'd have the following:

STR 12
DEX 10
CON 10
INT 11
WIS 8
CHA 12

To get STR and CHA to 18 takes 6 and 5 points respectively... and you only have 10 to play with?

Base stats therefore are,

Str 12 (to 15 with the house rule.. then spent 2 for 1 house rule pt and put 1 house rule pt into str to make it an 18.)
Dex 10 (to 12 with last 2 pts to spend. So 1 to spend for house rule.
Con 10
Int 11 (one house rule pt here to make it 12.
Wis 8
Cha 12 (I put 6 pts into Cha, making it 18... so 3 pts to spend via house rule)

Maybe im misinterpreting the house rule? but effectively you get 15 pts to spend correct? 1 for every 2 you put into a stat??

Correct me if im wrong please!

EDIT: @Zask - Okay I see where you got your crunch from. House Rule applies to stats after the racial and theme modifiers are applied. Don't think I made that implicitly clear - my bad.

Essentially it is a way of negating say a racial +2 bonus and gaining a floating +1... or allowing you to have a character with a dump stat less than 8.

So if you applied the -2 to Paeon's starting STR, you could drop it to 10 but gain a +1 to your starting 10 point buy (essentially giving you 11 points to play with).
