"I would suggest that we at least make sure that everybody is telling the truth. I can cast a zone of truth spell. If you both agree to let the spell affect you we can then try and come to some common understanding.

I give my word as a paladin of Iomedae that the spell I will cast will be Zone Of Truth and nothing more"

Verakas is still speechless for the moment; Zoarth looks hesitant, then nods. "...very well." He takes a step forwards into the air and slowly descends to the floor. His cats but one clamber off of him and take up positions atop the statue.

With a creaking gait, Zoarth walks his way over to you and stands, waiting for Haldern's spell. Then he blinks, and looks at Bladud. "...hold. 'My' Storm Queen? 'Here'? Not..." He looks to Verakas with an expression of shock. "...why, Verakas? Why did you try to destroy my beautiful castle, and my cats...? Oh... and myself."

Verakas looks stunned for a moment more.

Anything you want to say?

With them both agreeing, Haldern will cast Zone of Truth. Then

"We need for both of you to tell us EXACTLY what happened just before you parted ways. Tell us fully and completely. Zoarth, I suggest that you go first"

The old wizard hesitates, then nods.

"...very well."

"Verakas and I were together. It was... a wonderful time in my life. There was little but sunshine in our existences. Then, one day, I made a happy mistake in my research; mispronounced a syllable, carved a rune meant for a different spell. Instead of the minor outsider I sought to bind... there was a clowder of beautiful, beautiful cats. As beautiful as the word 'clowder', don't you think?" He smiles.

Still smiling, in the same calm tone, he continues. "The cats were so gorgeous, so innocent so kind; I simply could not give them up. And I knew that my darling would never allow them, that they might threaten her pretty birds. So... so..." His brow creases in befuddlement and concentration, then relaxes. "So, we left each other. I went north, I began building my castle... and I lived happily ever after with my cats ever since... until this recent tumult."

Bladud continues leaning on his spear, though he scratches an ear in confusion at the the unexpected turn in the conversation. As Zoarth speaks, the watches the cats, looking for any strange (or possibly aggressive) behavior.

Sense Motive, at cats: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

He looks over at Qot, shrugging dumbly, then turns to listen to Verakas’s side of things.

To Kenjaka and Bladud, he seems sincere.

The cats are... disconcerting. Even more than cats usually are. Their mix of stillness and motion, focus and distraction. It's a little unnerving.

He now looks directly at the cats, deeply on their eyes, and flaps his wings to gain the air.

Kenjakana frowns, but thanks to the Wine enhancing her judgement (an oxymoron if there ever was one), she does not do anything impulsive. She debates whether to toss up a Magic Circle against Evil and see how the cats and/or Zoarth react. However, the Sage Sorceress decides to wait a bit longer.

Zoarth blinks and waves a hand at Qot. "...stop that, young man, you're disturbing my pets."

Verakas recovers her voice, and speaks.

"We were together. I loved you... dearly. Then one morning I awoke, early, in my fashion. I found you, cooing over a horde of cats covered with blood and feathers. My heart seized, I ran to my aviary. I opened it... and saw every one of my feathered children, my soul-friends, gutted and devoured."

"Every one of those deaths rebounded on me; I collapsed into a deep coma, close to death. By merest chance, I survived enough to awaken nearly two weeks later. Zoarth... you were gone... you abandoned me... you... gods above Zoarth, why are you so old?" Zoarth blinks quizzically.

Zoarth hesitates and unclenches his fist. "Well... well, that sounds reasonable..." One by one, an increasing number of the cats turn to stare at Zoarth. "No... no, intolerable, appalling because... because... why because, what is happening, why am I feeling this..." He half-turns and stares at the cats as if seeing them for the first time. "W...what are you..." Clutching his forehead, he collapses to the ground, unconscious.

With a low hiss, smoke emerges from nothing, surrounding the statue, as the cats' eyes begin to glow, yellow and bright, before one by one winking out. Then, two open; golden, hand-sized and staring at all of you as a low, malevolent voice emanates. "...you forced me to overplay my hand. My control. Damn you all..."

Without seeing the enemy, Qot ponders between flurrying between the golden hand-sized eyes (and incur the 50% miss chance), or do something else. The monk finally decides to wait for someone to deal with the cloud and go for the second.

He quickly concentrates and says the words, then finally casts a spell: he hastes the four people of his group, then moves forward/sideways flying and approaching the creature using his shadow form.

Funny! When I looked yesterday at the list I could swear I was right behind Bladud, second in initiative (hence my post!)

You used my Perception mod as my Init. I would actually be behind Qot.

The invisible Kenjakana decides to call in another Huge Air Elemental.

Casting SMVI for Huge Air Elemental.

Order
Bladud, Verakas
Enemy
Rest of you

Qot, your action kicks in after the enemy does his thing, welcome to change it after that.

Ah, thanks Kenja

Hesitating, Verakas draws her greatsword and holds it high in readiness. She looks protectively over at Zoarth. Delaying.

A low laughter greets Bladud's proclamation. "Very well, then..." A low ringing sound fills the air, as small specks of dust begin to rise from the ground. "Dear Zoarth... your beloved cats are threatened... what do you wish for?" The old wizard's eyes remain closed, but his mouth slowly opens as he whispers a word.

"...protection..."

The ringing sound rises to a crescendo as the voice speaks once more. "Your wish... is granted..." Collapsing into silence, a huge purple tear in the air appears and from it leaps an apelike fiend with reptilian eyes which bolts for Bladud. The voice continues "And finally, Zoarth... what was that little surprise you prepared should the army return again... ah yes... MJOLNIKARA"

With a final arcane syllable, a low pounding emerges from within the great hall statue's head, as cracks emerge. Finally, a crude yet beautiful animated carving of a cloud giant warrior explodes from the head, dropping to the ground with a harsh impact that sends a shudder through the entire hall. Rising to a slow yet steady sprint, it charges at Bladud as well.

"And now, little hero, I feel we can see this thing done, once and for all..." the creature delves into a low chuckle from within its protective cloud.

Bladud, you get two AOOs

The duo descend upon the green-skinned warrior.

1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 35 4d4 + 8 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 4) + 8 = 17 If hit, Grapple 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (15) + 23 = 38 and DC 24 Fort each round starting now or Nauseated
1d20 + 22 ⇒ (7) + 22 = 29 2d10 + 9 ⇒ (3, 4) + 9 = 16

Letting out a bellow of fury, Verakas charges forwards and aims a hard blow at the apelike creature's neck. It cuts deeply, but not all of its force seems to affect the creature.
1d20 + 26 ⇒ (14) + 26 = 40 4d6 + 20 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 5) + 20 = 31

Immediate action, so absolutely. Does that have any implications?

Bladud's weapon lands two blows, the second far more catastrophic than the first, laying deep into the stone creature. Oddly enough, as it chips away the stone covering, another surface seems to lie below it- one made of hard, grey iron.

I don't think it would. The creatures are running at you, and have enough movement to be not especially interrupted if you happen to move away while they're charging.

Well; you could move behind Kenjaka so they go for her instead of you. But the arena's fairly open, I don't see it happening. And admittedly I didn't include the charge bonus, just had them move and attack.

Top of the round, go Bladud and Verakas

Yep, not grappled. And it's gone, so the abilities question seems a bit moot.

There's little graceful in BLADUD!'s movements. In a single movement he steps forward and pounds his halberd down again and again and again into the golem. The first blow completely shatters the stone covering, revealing a far cruder iron creature beneath, yet no less dangerous. Bladud's two following blows pound deep furrows into its body, yet not enough to leave it bowed and broken.

With terrible malignancy, the Glabrezu and its construct minion make their assault. The demon leaps down from the statue to the floor, its eyes seeking out the invisible Kenjaka. It speaks a word that impacts solidly with her body, going straight through her mind, unable to be remembered. It stuns her, halting her spell.

lance: 1d20 + 21 + 5 - 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 21 + 5 - 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 39 for damage: 1d8 + 24 + 12 + 24 ⇒ (4) + 24 + 12 + 24 = 64
192 pts of damage

Jensal: 1d20 + 20 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 20 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 26 for damage: 1d8 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 20 = 21

Ok,charging mounted paladins smiting are just silly, aren't they?I think I just one shot the thing

I'd never get churlish over a martial's ability to deal damage.

A low chuckle fills the air as the glabrezu's eyes remain fixed on the stunned and frozen Kenjaka. "Yes, yes... let your spells shrivel in your mouths, your armor melt before hellfire onto your skin, your swords and spears..." Suddenly realizing what it has failed to track, the demon swivels, claws arms raised, and runs directly into the charging knight's raised lance. Another holy blow smashes straight through the creature's chest, its point emerging from the other side, a black and withered heart made of shadows impaled upon it for a moment before it crumbles into dust. The creature's yellow eyes soften from malignant into shock and horror. "No... no... I have so much to do... so many lies to tell... so many mortals to corrupt..."

With a final deep, shuddering breath, the immense demon staggers forward and falls forth onto Haldern and Jensel; mid-arc it dissipates into black demon blood, then further disintegrating into ash burning away to nothing as it collides with the ground.

A moment of stillness fills the battlefield, as the one remaining enemy stands, almost ended by BLADUD!'s blow. Qot the Archer takes aim...

Please consider Clustered Shots

With a loud skittering noise, Qot's arrows flay the iron golem, shavings sliced and carved off as it eventually falls to the ground, nearly cut in half. Verakas lowers her blade as a final aura of peace fills the room.

She hurries to Zoarth's side, and shakes his shoulder. "Come on, you mad old fool, wake, live now this is all over..." Her mouth purses as a single tear grows in the edge of her eye. It drops to the ground, and Zoarth's eyes open and meet hers, as if for the first time in a long, long while. "...Vera? What... what happened?" He blinks. His form is still aged and greyed, but his eyes are now quick and youthful. He closes them again. "...what have I done to you. Oh Vera, I'm so sorry..." As she hugs him close, both giants begin to weep.

The huge warrior is too engrossed in his struggle with the poison to fully note the exchange between Vera and Zoarth.

He pulls out a Scroll of Neutralize Poison, then quickly casts it.

Scroll's caster check, DC 19: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24; success, leaving Bladud with 8 con damage.

Breathing deeply and sweating horribly, the half-orc watches the two giants warily as he begins trying to heal the poison's damage.

Each casting is 3 rounds, so he'll be busy getting back to fighting shape as this scene plays out (at least for the first bit).

With all the enemies finished off by her companions in the blink of an eye, Kenjakana manages to pull herself together in peace.

...That was close, the former Elf silently muses in her mind. Thanks the Divines that I had allies to protect me.

The invisible sorceress floats over to the party Paladin and pats him on the shoulder.

"Thank you, Sir Haldern," Kenjakana's disembodied voice says softly and sincerely. She looks over at the two cloud giants and adds, "You saved me, and by the looks of things, you saved them as well."

"no thanks are ever necessary between comrades. It was very definitely a group effort.

That spell would have taken any of us down. You were just unlucky that it was you who was targetted

Plus your casting meant he had to shut you down non-lethally, so he couldn't use his more lethal spells on everyone else.

Eventually, the two giants recover enough to speak. Zoarth steps forward. "Visitors... I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am. It's strange... of the last few years, I remember some, all, and none, all at the same time. What I know I must deduce. I failed a summoning, I called forth a glabrezu specially twisted for manipulation and concealment. It took my mind, playing upon my love of felines. It made me do things I could scarcely contemplate... though that I contemplated them may mean I still share some guilt in them." He runs a hand along a wrinkled cheek and shudders. "Gods above, that wretched beast fed on my age, my life-force... what have I lost..." He turns for a moment and looks at Verakas. "What can I regain?" He shifts back to you. "How can I think you for your help bringing the truth to light? For protecting me?" Serious-faced, Verakas steps forward behind him. "...and now my crucible challenge has been accomplished... what reparations would you have of me, companions? Sir Haldern? Now more than ever I see the weight of the sins I have committed, because of that demon but even more because of me..."

Turning to Verakas:

"I am very, very glad that you recognize the evil that you did. But you can take some solace in the fact that you weren't completely responsible for your actions.

I'd suggest that you make reparations to the innocents that you harmed. Partly you should give the towns and villages some money to make sure that they can rebuild and survive until such time that they can rebuild. And then I think you owe them some protection in the future, the benefit of your being a good neighbour to them. Tell them that they can come to you in times of great peril and expect your aid and assistance"

I don't have a good handle on exactly what harm was caused. Is the above sufficient or should I go into more detail?

Turning to Zoarth

"I don't think that you owe me any more than you have already promised. But my friends may wish to claim more money or magic if you are willing. They joined in the expectation of gaining more than perhaps they have received"
