You were in the courtyard. From where you are, with a 30ft move speed you will get there in 8 rounds on foot or 4 rounds by flying. Half those times if your move speed or fly speed is 60ft.
The fog was only used to hide the approach of the dracolisks, and was dismissed once they got close. As soon as the fog was dismissed, the Drakelands air troops rushed in to battle. Anyway, all of that was/is happening between 100ft and 200ft above you.

Lavode casts his dimension door spell, with Alden, Nienna and Naala with him, expecting that they would be transported to the rooftop gardens.
The instant he completes his spell, however, he realises that something is off... his spell spirals out of his control, and the energies slip from his grasp. No transportation occurs when he finishes his spell... but a split second afterwards, he, Nienna, Alden and Naala feel themselves being pulled...somewhere. Something is trying to transport them somewhere else against their will!
Too late, Lavode recalls one of the first things Bescaylie told them about Spurhorn...
"One more thing," Lauriel adds. "Bescaylie says not try to approach under cover of invisibility or teleport in. There is some kind of ward against teleportation into the fort, and anyone who approaches the fort invisibly is automatically considered an enemy."
Alden, Lavode, Nienna and Naala need to make will saves to avoid...unpleasantness.

Lavode and Nienna close their eyes tightly as they concentrate to resist whatever it was that was pulling them away... And when they open their eyes, they are right where they originally were, but Alden and Naala are gone.

Exiel winces as he realises what just happened.
"I want to work out some way to help Alden, but we've got people dying up on that rooftop! I'm going to head up there first and see if I can buy us some time. Soon as we get a chance, we'll ask Pharamol about that teleportation ward!"
Exiel spreads his gargoyle wings and flies directly towards the roof of the keep.

Alden has a few options here - he could keep on trying to find a way out, though it apparently could become dangerous. Or he could sit tight and wait for rescue, in which case I could give you control of some of the bad guys until the party is able to try to rescue you, so you have something to do whilst your character prays for someone to come help him.
Still need to know what Lavode is doing in round 2, since he could affect when the rest of the party arrives at the courtyard. If we don't hear form him in another 24 hours, I will assume Lavode is so surprised by the results of his attempted dimensional travel that he spends the round in stunned inaction and put him in delay.
GM Aram Zey |
It's in post #301 at the top of this page, but I'll re-type it here.
On foot with 30ft movespeed and without flight would take 8 rounds. 4 rounds with 30ft flight (like Exiel) or 60ft move speed, 2 rounds with 60 ft fly speed (like Nienna).
Nienna will arrive on the roof in round 3, and will can take another round to fly up one of the towers if she wants to. Exiel arrives in round 4.
Alden Helpinghand |
Alden will sit tight, being smart enough not to get himself killed at the moment.
I'm actually totally fine with just following along until Alden is rescued. I've got a ton of other PbPs going at the moment, so I have plenty to keep me busy until the others decide to rescue poor non-magically-inclined Alden.

Nienna is first to the scene. Flying up above the level of the central keep's roof, she sees that the rooftop garden has been turned into some kind of statue gallery, except the statues are all of triaxians wielding crossbows and with expressions of horror on their faces. They are still prowling about, running after the few crossbowmen who have not been turned to stone yet. The crossbowmen for their part are in full retreat. Neither of the dracolisks have noticed Nienna yet.
Meanwhile, the dragonkin is hovering at the Eastern-most tower, using his breath weapon on the crossbowmen at the top of the tower.
Nienna can act against the dracolisks in round 3, or keep moving towards the specified. The rest of you can keep moving or find some other way to get there quicker if you can.
Exiel |
Could we get an initiative order so I can see where we stand? If I go before the dracolisks in round 4, I should be able to guard her whilst she pincushions the dracolisks from where she is. It looks like going up the tower will be a bad idea for now since the dragonkin is up there.
I also forgot to make my knowledge checks...

2. Saves
3. Resistances and immunities
4. Weaknesses and vulnerabilities
5. Special senses
6. Other special attacks (assuming none, so I'm putting this as the last question - stone gaze is plenty enough...)?!
Alden Helpinghand |
GM Aram Zey |
1. Special ways to avoid or counter the petrification
The same as any other gaze attack. Close your eyes or avert your eyes.If you close your eyes you do not need to make a saving throw, but are blinded. If you avert your eyes, you get a 50% chance to not need to make the save, but they gain concealment against you. The petrification can be removed by coating the statue with FRESH basilisk or dracolisk blood - must be done within 1 hour of killing the basilisk or dracolisk.
2. Saves
Fort high, reflex low
3. Resistances and immunities
Immune to acid, sleep and paralysis
4. Weaknesses and vulnerabilities
Nothing special. Weak against anti-dragon attacks.

From a corner of the parapet around the rooftop garden, a small figure unloads a flurry of arrows into one of the dracolisks. Before the other can even react or make sense of what has happened, it too is pinchushioned. Both have just the barest moment to stare at each other in disbelief before falling to the ground, dead.
Exiel arrives at the scene, ready to strike, only to see that Nienna has already single-handedly defeated both the dracolisks, amidst cheers of the few crossbowmen who yet remain unpetrified.
However, their dragonkin commander is still circling the towers overhead, and he has taken notice...

"Totally worth it."
Exiel |
Exiel gives a low whistle as he surveys Nienna's handiwork.
"Wow. Good job, Nienna! Ho, you soldiers of Spurhorn! Your fellows can still be saved! If you apply the blood of those beasts to your fellows, they should return to normal, but only if you do it in the next hour! Hurry up with it! Leave that dragonkin to us!"
Then he turns his attention to the dragonkin at the tower and takes to the skies, doing his best to interpose himself between the dragonkin and Nienna.
GM Aram Zey |
The dragonkin sees Exiel coming to fight him, and gladly obliges. He swoops towards Exiel as if to get into mellee, then suddenly makes an aerial turn and spits a stream of acid at Exiel as he flies by. He only stops and turns to face Exiel again after he is safely out the gargoyle's charge range.
This guy isn't a fool. He sees you flying towards him and estimates your fly speed, then uses the range of his 60ft line breath weapon and flyby attack feat to his advantage.

He grins as he sees the dragonkin backing away, only to be fired upon by Nienna. He adjusts his position so that he is once more between the dragonkin and Nienna, and calls out to the dragonkin.
"Well if you're gonna keep your distance, my friend is going to continue to use you as target practice. How long do you think you can last?"

He had 15hp left, and blinded so any one of Nienna's arrows would have killed him. I'm not going to bother with that.
With the dracolisks defeated and their dragonkin handler slain, the Drakelands' counter-attack falters. The crossbowmen heed Exiel's directions and quickly begin to drain the dracolisks of as much blood as they can to smear on their petrified fellows.
+5 victory points in total
By the time 42 and Lavode arrive at the rooftop, the situation is well under control, and Thronull, the commander of the crossbowmen who had eyed you so warily before, expresses his deepest thanks to you in general and Nienna especially for saving his men. Though she cannot understand his words, he makes Exiel and Lavode tell her that she's the finest archer Spurhorn had seen in years, which is exceedingly high praise considering his position.
Alden Helpinghand |
Well played, guys! Now it's time to find your disappeared ally, Alden! LOL
GM Aram Zey |
Well, Nienna got the drop on the dracolisks and took down everyone almost single-handedly. Full sneak-attack at long range is a scary thing. Exiel soaked up an acid breath weapon for her and saved her from getting charged, but then that's kind of his thing.
The battle in the skies however is not yet over. Thronull orders his troops to bring the bodies of the dracolisks and their petrified fellows into the safety of the keep. Upon hearing that he only has an hour before the blood becomes ineffective, he divides his men into three groups - one to drain the blood of the dracolisks and apply them to the petrified soldiers, another to scour the courtyard for other dracolisk corpses to drain for blood, and then concentrates the last group in the Western tower to continue providing ranged support for the battle.
Realising that this leaves him with only a fraction of his crossbowmen actively fighting, he asks the party to remain on standby in the courtyard so they can respond to new developments in the battle. However, Alden's whereabouts are still unknown...
So the question now is whether you guys want to try to look for Alden (and work out how to find him) or keep helping in the battle. Spurhorn's defenders appear to have the advantage now, but the fighting is still heavy.
Exiel |
Using Lavode's tongues spell, Exiel makes an inquiry of Thronull.
"One of our number was affected by a teleportation effect and has disappeared. I understand that this was due to some sort of ward that protects Spurhorn. However, we would like our friend back. Would you happen to know what has happened to him and where he might be? Or if he is still alive?"
So...what happens if we get mistakenly advised that Alden is dead? ;D
If Thronull doesn't know anything, we might need to wait till after the battle to ask Pharamol. Alternatively we could try to all teleport again and this time willingly fail the saving throw, but if we're going to take a leap into the unknown like that, we probably want to at least stay till the end of the siege first.
Is there even any way to know that Alden is still alive or on this plane of existence?
Other Triaxians |
"Sorry laddie," the grizzled triaxian replies, "everyone here knows well enough not to try any fancy teleporting around Spurhorn, but it has been a long time since anyone actually found out what happens to people who try. I doubt even Pharamol knows... If you have some way to find out, I'm sure he would be most interested!"
You could try a knowledge arcana or history check to match what happened to Alden with commonly counter-measures against teleportation. DC 25 Arcana or 35 History.
Nienna Telemnar |
In the background, Nienna mutters to herself while making weighing motions with both hands.
"Hmmm.... Missing party member... Baddies to pin-cushion... Missing party member... Baddies to pin-cushion..."
The hand that represents dealing with the remaining foes is noticeably heavier than the one for dealing with magical wackiness.
As much as I have having the party split, I'd prefer not to leave the place undefended while the attack is ongoing.
Exiel |
I'm inclined to agree, especially if we don't know where we need to go to retrieve Alden going or how long it will take to get back. Also, paladin code, lives at stake... =(

Subject - 42 |
Finally catching up with the group, 42 looks around. "where is Alden?" he asks.
Nienna Telemnar |
"There was a slight... mishap... with Lavode's spell. Alden and Naala vanished while Lavode and I remained at the tower."
GM Aram Zey |
Everyone else is clueless, but Exiel's clever little familiar tells you all that Alden probably fell foul of a unimaginatively-named "teleportation trap". It not only stops teleportation to anywhere within the warded area, but also sends the would-be teleporters to another predetermined location. Unfortunately, the destination is set by the ward's maker at the time of creation, and could be anywhere within a normal teleport spell's range. But you can at least be sure he is still alive, or at least he was not killed when he disappeared. Anything could have happened since then.
GM Aram Zey |
Ok, I can tell you that there is only one more combat encounter before the siege is broken. It looks like at least Exiel and Nienna want to finish the fight before going to retrieve Alden, so I'll move us along. Hopefully we'll also hear something from Lavode.
The battle above you continues to rage as you debate what to do about the missing Alden. While the strategy of using the dracolisks against the tightly-packed aerial forces of Spurhorn struck a significant blow, the commanders of Spurhorn's defenders quickly identified them as a major threat and ordered their forces to prioritise them as targets. Though they do not fall as quickly as the two which Nienna slew, they are not far behind.
With their forces faltering, the remaining Drakelands dragonkin rally together for a last ditch offence. Where before they sought to achieve objectives and strategic advantages, they are now focusing on weakened targets and seeking to rake up as high a body count as they can before they themselves are taken down. Either they have exhausted all their strategies and have nothing to left to rely on apart from blind aggression, or they fear the consequences of failure at least as much as they fear death itself. Either way, the skies above are now the site of an all-out brawl.
It has been about 2 minutes since your last fight, so adjust your buffs accordingly. You can replenish your buffs in this time if you need to.
As you watch the ensuing chaos, a white dragonkin bearing the colours of the Drakelands catches your eye as he grapples a silver dragonkin from Spurhorn and tears at its wings before sending the both of them hurtling to the rooftop gardens where you stand. The white dragonkin arrests its fall at the last moment, but his helpless victim is unable to do the same and hits the ground with a loud thud that shakes the ground beneath your feet. It does not get up. The white dragonkin roars in sadistic glee as he raises his glaive to finish the job. Meanwhile, two more dragonkin bearing the colours of Spurhorn on their gold and blue scales swoop down to help in finishing off the victim, though they also keep an eye on the Pathfinders as if daring them to intervene.
The blue and gold dragonkin are about 100ft in the air but descending on the unconscious silver. The white is hovering 10ft above ground and looks like he is about to perform a coup de grace.
