Honey Heist rules

It is THE YEAR 2017. You are all CRIMINALS, and also BEARS, attending HONEYCON 2017.

HONEYCON 2017 is being held on a LAVISH TRUCK CONVOY. In addition to panels, tastings, camaraderie, merchandise, and that unmistakable con atmosphere, HONEYCON 2017 will be presenting its main prize: ULTRADENSE MEGAHONEY FROM ESPECIALLY POSH BEES.

Being extremely valuable ULTRADENSE MEGAHONEY, it is protected by two primary security factors that you, being CRIMINAL BEARS, have already determined: a CCTV NETWORK and POISON GAS. Furthermore, this year's HoneyCon organizer is known for her being singularly SLY AND CUNNING.

Do you, a gang of CRIMINAL BEARS, have what it takes to pull off the biggest HONEY HEIST of a generation!?

Let's play to find out!

Expectations:
I'm thinking this'll be a pretty light-hearted, fast-and-loose game. I mean, it's about criminal bears stealing honey from a convention.

Narrative freedom and player creativity:
I've got some ideas given the above parameters, but this is rules light and improvised. Once I've set a scene, I 100% encourage y'all to suggest environmental details and take creative or off-the-wall actions. That might be a bit harder in play by post vs. a free-flowing face-to-face conversation, but I think we've played enough together by now that we can make it work.

Content and comfort zones:
Given the game's nature, I don't expect there to be much objectionable content. That being said, please let us know if there's anything you're not comfortable experiencing at this virtual table. For my part, I'd prefer to shy away from sexual content, and have a hard pass on extreme violence (detailed, graphic descriptions of harm) and anything involving sexual assault.

Since y'all're bears and all, I'm alright with abstracted/cartoonish violence, e.g.: The honey badger, deprived of his honey, goes berserk, and soon the security guard's station looks like Jackson Pollock's art studio once he ran out of all but one primary color. But I won't be narrating anything visceral.

Finally, if anything comes up that someone's uncomfortable with, speak up and we'll avoid that content going forward!

Hey, can you open up the Gameplay thread? That way we can dot in and add it to our "Campaigns" page.

As a tip, DO NOT delete your first post as GM. If you do, the Gameplay tab will be lost and you'll have to make a new campaign.

Got it, thanks!

I just realized that we probably want to use the Discussion thread for rolling characters, since the Recruitment thread will show up in the Recruitment part of the Forums, and we are not actually recruiting.

Good call! Here's the post from Recruitment:

*Not really optional 'cause good lord, why wouldn't you!?

  • Honey Heist rules

How do y'all want to start? I was thinking a crime planning scene in an RV on the way to the con, but we could also do that sort of thing as flashbacks, and I'd just chuck you right onto the convoy.

    Whatever you think!

FYI, Dennis and I are at cons this weekend, and will probably be slow to post.

There is a real lack of bear avatars.

    Honey Heist rules

Oh right! Good luck on your panel!

I'll get a more action-driving post up today, but no rush on responses.

    So should we re-roll here?

    Honey Heist rules

No need to reroll, just for Doug H or whatever other misc rolls need doin’

Like, can't we just smash things until we get the honey? What do we need to plan for?

Why do I work with such amateurs?

    Honey Heist rules

So it's clear, I figured I as the narrator will play the straight man—I realize the tone of those first posts is a little dry, but I'm definitely expecting y'all to goof around in pursuit of ULTRADENSE MEGAHONEY!

Hat: Derby! (What? OMG OP! Sorry about it. Already GM approved.)

Well, I rolled a slick polar, but I’d like to play a rookie panda, if that’s OK. Unless you guys think we need another slick polar, of course. I’m not trying to meta-game btw.

    Honey Heist rules

    Rookie panda's fine by me!

    Male Ursus americanus Muscle

Is two Muscle gonna be a problem?

    Honey Heist rules

This isn't a very game-y system, and any challenges y'all come across are going to be things I've improvised. As long as you've got a character combo you're interested in playing, I think we'll be just fine!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I don’t think Lola would allow another slick polar bear anyway.

    Honey Heist rules

Sorry if I've been a bit unclear! I was thinking of this like our pre-Ruins of Azlant cabin talk section, but with more narrative and scene-setting freedom for the PCs; y'all could describe the vehicle's interior and the like.

I'm now realizing that's a pretty big departure from Pathfinder, and that the normal "let's all collaboratively decide what things're like" approach I'd take for a game like this doesn't quite translate to play by post.

I went ahead and set the limo scene, but I want y'all to know the "I grab the rake" rule is in full effect!

I am at a con this weekend, but I will try to get a post or two up!

Honey badger muscle in a cowboy hat

    Me too.

    Honey Heist rules

Checking in on how folks feel about this game. I know it started up right around a con and other life events!

I am still in for the game, but the con did make it hard to post! I’ll get something up tonight.

World-building question: is everyone a bear? Or is the world filled with humans and we're just especially smart bears? I was assuming the lattr, but my post is kind of weird if it's the former.

    Honey Heist rules

Yep, normal human world and y'all're exceptional bears! Which'll be interesting once you hit the con :)

Slick carnage brainy bear in a crown and trilby

    I'll be posting today too!

I checked on on the discussion over the weekend and did not see the Gameplay tab show any posts. It looks like it won't count any "new" posts till you actually post yourself or something. I thought no one posted yet (yes: the Paizo site is so slow I don't click on other tabs unless told to do so).

    Honey Heist rules

Huh, good to know! I'll make it more clear next time I run something :)

    Brainy Bear?

    Dang, Doug. That went dark.

    Honey Heist rules

It’s been a day, I’ll get up a post later tonight or tomorrow morning!

    Honey Heist rules

Oh, if y'all want to solidify more of a heist plan, we can just say you did it at some point during the limo ride.

    Your relevant details are:
-CCTV and poison gas as con defenses
    -A sly, cunning organizer
-A [redacted] (secret GM only detail!)
Ultradense megahoney is on a separate, more secure vehicle, and requires a HoneyPass Platinum to legitimately access

You're also light on details right now. If you have any thoughts or questions, go ahead and voice them here—that'll help me organize. You'll also start getting more info once you get into the con proper!

    Honey Heist rules

Hey folks, sorry for the radio silence, been a tough week. I've got commitments today but I'm looking to review your posts and get my own up later this afternoon/evening.

No worries, hope everything works out!

    Honey Heist rules

Hey folks, I'm inclined to mark this as inactive, but wanted to know what y'all think first.

The fast-and-loose, collaborative approach I was expecting for Honey Heist doesn't lend itself to PbP, and I've had some trouble providing a structured way to progress as a result!

Yeah, I’d have to agree. It was fun to give it a shot, but I think this game really needs the player interaction of a live game or VTT.

    Grand Lodge

    He/Him

I think you're right. I'd love to play it with you in person some time, or even via VTT, but it's been hard to hook into asynchronously.

Yeah, I have to agree. It was fun and I enjoyed what we did manage to do!

    Honey Heist rules

A VTT one-shot might work, or at a con sometime. Thanks for giving it a shot, folks!
