Liberty's Edge

Short History:
1) Write five things about your character's concept and background - five things that you think are the most essential parts of your character.

1: Elaina was born a few months after her family moved immigrated to Cseza. Her family sold her into slavery when she was five to pay some debts. She was given to Amisi Molokhya, who tormented her for a decade before she escaped.

2: Elaina strives to be a hero like the ones you read about in all the stories, but she struggles to really want to help others and overcome her selfishness.

3: Elaina refuses to address her past. She hides her insecurities and lack of knowledge and understanding of the world behind wild stories she’ll spin any time she thinks she can get away with it.

4: Elaina wants to enroll in the Telvanta Dance Academy, the primary thing that drew her to Siren’s Bay.

5: Elaina makes her living dancing and telling stories at the inn she stays at or on the streets.

2) List two goals for the character that you, as a player, think would be cool to see accomplished in-game.

1: Get over her emotional issues and be a real hero, instead of just doing good things because been told she’s supposed to.

2: Elaina wants to become the most famous dancer in the world. Or perhaps just Siren’s bay.

3) List two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of.

1: Elaina is outwardly outgoing and confident, but internally she’s wracked with fear and anxiety over everything. She has a terror of large dogs.

2: She is not aware Khata Molokhya has a sick obsession with getting her back.

4) Describe three people that are tied to the character through blood, romance, or honor. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. All can do something useful for you, if you can get the situations to line up.

1: Friendly- Nkosama Emeka is Elaina’s mentor and father figure. A kind and patient man that did what he could to protect Elaina when they were slaves. He taught her to dance and to fight and helped her foster her magical talent. He is a Nahuahtl man who teaches Nahuahtlan martial arts in the Sails district. Elaina has tried to put some distance between the two of them lately, thinking that’s what adults are supposed to do.

2: Friendly- Alriani Elathana is a streetwise half-elf urchin Elaina caught trying to pick her pockets not moments after she entered the city gates for the first time. Elaina hired her to teach her how to survive city life and stay with her at nights so she wouldn’t have to sleep alone. She’s developed deeper feelings for the half-elf but doesn’t know how to act on them.

3: Hostile- Icelos Sagonas. A Halfling, fellow escaped slave, and hunting dog trainer for their old master. He adopted a stray dog that followed the caravan despite Elaina’s protests. One night while Icelos slept Elaina convinced a passerby to take the dog with him at least far enough that it wouldn’t find its way back. Icelos can’t prove anything, but he knows Elaina is behind his missing dog.

5) Describe three memories that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

1: The first time she met Nkosama, the first person in her life that showed her kindness and didn’t try to use her she discovered not everyone was an enemy.

2: After escaping slavery, the realization that she could do whatever she wanted with her life.

3: Seeing farms for the first time after spending her entire life in the desert and knowing the world is prosperous and full of wonder and beauty.

At 4’9”, Elaina stands out for her lack of stature, if anything. She’s scrawny but a life of hardship makes her angular face look older than she is. Her blond hair hangs just below her ears and she rarely does anything with it other than brushing it to frame her huge, round blue eyes. She has a small gold ring piercing in the center of her lower lip that she clacks between her teeth when frustrated. As a performer by trade she always wears her dancing outfit in public, and she has somewhat questionable taste in color. She wears a loose-fitting gold silk blouse and gloves and gold dyed thigh-high leather boots. Green leggings and corset and a green, floppy wide brimmed hat with a large gold feather in the band round out her outfit.

Her traveling clothes, yet unworn, are more standard fair. A white cotton blouse under a sleeveless brown leather vest and a short skirt over white wool trousers. Brown knee-high boots and thin leather gloves that run half way to her elbows. The caravan she came in to town with gave her lamellar torso armor, the only armor she could bear the weight of while still being able to practice her combat dancing. It’s made up of dozens of small leather squares riveted to a thick wool vest and only covers her torso. She has a low poundage short bow but her primary weapon is her scimitar and she is surprisingly competent at using it to defend herself.

She spends her free time trying to train Viperbane or seeing if she can convince someone to buy her a few drinks. She loves to read fantasy books and watch heroic plays or listen to stories from bards. She enjoys being the center of attention and makes up her own stories to tell others. Otherwise she plots to find ways to enter the Telvanta Dance Academy.

Elaina has a black and white male hamburg chicken named Emperor Bifurcator Viperbane.

Elaina is a Dawnflower Dervish bard. She can only buff herself with the typical performances and will be focused on melee combat and buff/utility spells for combat, tumbling through enemies to set up flanks or dueling one-on-one. She has high acrobatics, bluff, and diplomacy but the archetype gives up Bardic Knowledge.

I’ll post more about her history and personality when I’ve written it up. I’ve updated her profile HERE if you want to see mechanics. I have everything but gear and stats, I believe.

Crisischild: You may have a chicken. It would cost 1 gp.

rdknight: There is another city-state around a hundred miles to the south-southeast named Cauldron. The city was built in the caldera of a dormant volcano. Several years ago, the volcano partially erupted and wrecked a portion of the town. It's in the process of rebuilding currently. Siren's Bay and Cauldron have a strong trade relationship.

Other than that, the continent you're on is dominated by Cseza. I haven't yet designed beyond this continent much, so if there's a country/culture you'd like to be form, just let me know and it can most likely be added.

Helikon: Looks good.

Kaavek: Looks good. No problem with the length.

The Telvanta Dance Academy teaches many forms of dance, but specializes in ballet. Only a select few highly talented individuals are accepted each year into their ballet program, and the cost is prodigious. Those that graduate from the Academy are highly sought-after performers.

And my character threw it all away! I can see how her father would get angry enough to disown her for dropping out of such a prestigious school!

Crisischild: It sounds like Arya and Elaina would get on well! I hope they get a chance to meet each other!

Seeing as how I put forward a dwarf...what can you tell me about dwarves in this setting?

Grumbaki wrote:

When the gods left Arisythila, most dwarven clans withdrew into themselves, turning away all visitors. It is only recently - within the last 50 years - that they have begun reopening their kingdoms to outsiders. Dwarves are typically, but not always, a matriarchal society. They fled the depths of the great Dark millennia ago, and now believe the great evil that chased them out occupies their old cities.

Ephiril, called the collector, at your service.

Completed applications so far:

Grumbaki: Valghaz Ironhammer, dwarf warpriest of Merodach
Simeon: Tehuantin (and Acoatl) - Nahuahtl human unchained summoner
Samuel Halford-Maw: Hanko, human gunslinger
Kaavek: Arya Semkhehay, human pirate unchained rogue
Crisischild: Elaina Newberry, human whirling dervish bard
Helikon: Ephiril the collector, half-elf occultist

Cseza will work just fine. "Mimi" is an ex-military sapper, and I was just wondering if there were multiple nations with armies to choose from.

If we have addition languages that we can take, should we assume "Common" is the single human language in use and go with non-human extra languages?

Here is Mimi, who's true name is Berna. She's a Grenadier Alchemist. Most of the crunch is in place, and I'm still working on the 10 minute background.

Liberty's Edge

GM alientude: Cool,thanks.

Kaavek: I agree!

Berna "Mimi Pi" Pirnaz wrote:

Yes. Common is a derivative of High Csezan, a language that these days, only the nobility of Cseza speak, and even then generally only during official ceremonies.

Grand Lodge

Would Aquan (ot its equivalent in your setting) be an acceptable additional language to take for a sailor?
Otherwise what would be the most common (besides common) language spoken in Siren's Bay?
Also, would my character be able to take the Corsair feat?

Aquan would be fine. The second most common language spoken in Siren's Bay would be Halfling.

The Corsair feat is okay.

Finesse Training:
Gain Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat.

Sneak Attack:
If a rogue can catch an opponent when she is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage.
The rogue's attack deals extra damage anytime her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the rogue flanks her target. This extra damage is 1d6 at 1st level, and increases by 1d6 every 2 rogue levels thereafter. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet. This additional damage is precision damage and is not multiplied on a critical hit.

Sea Legs:
Gain Sea Legs as a bonus feat, even if she does not meet the prerequisites.

The Exchange

Just interested for later what basic gear is it possible to buy at sirens bay. I presume as city it has pretty much everything from poisons to some excotic weapons correct me if I'm wrong.

You should be able to buy most any mundane gear you want.

Mimi's finally just about ready. There are a couple of mechanical changes, but mostly it's the character fluff that's finally in place. Appearance and Background done. Just a bit about personality to go!

Hi alientude.
Sent you a PM regarding a concept which needs some GM fiat mechanical-wise as its based on a poorly written archetype.
Would love to join in! So I'm leaving a dot here for now.

P.s. The pm was sent from an alias of mine (Ghost of War).

So guys, here comes 'Old Snowbeard' a dwarf looking like he is well past the 200 and has lived most of those years in a harsh environment.

The fluff and very basic mechanic is done. Missing are skills, spells and gear. Also some of the calculated stats like AC and such things which somewhat depend on the equipment.

Character background/appearance and such are all in his alias. Feel free to have a look!
He's a weird one (with the matching Charisma - you've been warned!) even for a dwarf and his fighting style is ... uncommon.
In fact he is grappling enemies with his beard and stacks all kind of nasty debuffs/conditions on them to make them weak like a toddler and remove them out of the fight. Think a combat master monk/brawler ... using his magic-white-beard. The build is based on a witch archetype (white-haired) and I will later go magus to drop more debuffs and stuff THROUGH the beard on the grappled foe.
Yup it's strange but I love the concept since I found a build making it a possibility ;-)

Just when you think you saw everything...

That's what I though when I saw the build, immediately followed by: I must play this. As a dwarf. Using his beard! ;-)

It was just irresistible. I just love 'uncommon' concepts. Which is one of the main reasons I really love Pathfinder. There just is no concept you cannot build if you look hard enough.

EDIT: As I get a familiar as a class feature, and obviously would take the King Crab for the neat +2 on Grapple Checks ... now the problem is: A dwarf with a (water dependent!) crab is just not flavorful at all, so I would love to reskin it into something else. Fluff wise it would be some mountain/snowland dweller. I personally would love a large bird of prey (stone eagle?) for they also grab and even fly away their prey, so I that may match a grapple featuring familiar? To keep it balanced it may have a slower fly speed / worse maneuverability compared to the other flying familiars?
Would look cool to have a large bird sit on my walking staff I guess :-)

Exactly. I feel like more 'up to date' D&D systems are all about forcing balance. Pathfinder is about throwing so many options at you that people can get easily overwhelmed or make weak characters.

But if you take the time, you can make something truly unique. Like a dwarf who fights with his magical beard.

I would rather hand wave the need to return to water part of a king crab than change the bonus on another familiar. I think the concept of a dwarf beard-fighter with a crab is pretty cool. The crab could possibly even live in the beard...

Completed applications so far:

Grumbaki: Valghaz Ironhammer, dwarf warpriest of Merodach
Simeon: Tehuantin (and Acoatl) - Nahuahtl human unchained summoner
Samuel Halford-Maw: Hanko, human gunslinger
Kaavek: Arya Semkhehay, human pirate unchained rogue
Crisischild: Elaina Newberry, human whirling dervish bard
Helikon: Ephiril the collector, half-elf occultist
rdknight: Berna "Mimi Pia" Pirnaz, human grenadier alchemist
Swordwhale: Old Snowbeard, dwarf white-haired witch

Reminder for anyone interested that has not submitted an application yet - recruitment will close on 3/1.

I guess Old Snowbeard is complete now.

He's skilled for some knowledge and survival, with a funny droplet of Intelligence-based Intimidation. Hope he will survive the first few levels, for this build takes some time to come to full force. Even more so as I choose style over optimization. Dwarf is a real bad choice for this build but it has just that much flavor to pass up on it...

Okay! I think I finally got everything from paper to the alias... If I missed something please let me know and I'll fix it ASAP!

This is Timeskeeper BTW.

@Arya: If we two got to play, there should be some deadly synergy! I grapple them, followed by dropping tons of Mali on them PLUS standing in just the right spot for you to flank&backstab the poor guy.

@Old Snowbeard: I agree, we'd make a formidable team. I hope we'll get to see how that strategy plays out in game!

Lord Kakabel here; my submission is complete.

Presenting the humble Chan Kay, LG human unchained monk, taking advantage of your "Combat Expertise prerequisites not needed" rule!

Completed background is in his spoiler.

Thank you for your consideration!

Added the "Mountain King", my white mountain crab familiar, to the top of my wandering staff.
And of course to the appearance-description in the profile and a small paragraph about meeting with it in his history.

Eagerly awaiting the choices!
Good luck to anyone, hope we will have a chance to play together. Had a look at most of your applications and all seems like interesting characters! Will be a tough choice for the GM!

Reminder: applications will close tomorrow, we'll say at 6:00 PM PST (it's when I get off work, seems appropriate). Once applications are closed, it may take me a day or two to choose players. There's been a lot of fantastic applications, and I want to make sure to give them all full consideration before making any choices.

Sorry for the last minute update, but I've updated Elaina's profile with more history and the last mechanical bits it was missing.

Sales pitch: Out of combat Elaina can do social stuff with high diplomacy, bluff, and Know: Local. She’s a bit out there though, so she might mess up some social engagements despite good dice rolls.
While she doesn’t have the usual bard-acting-through-the-party accouterments, she’d pair very well with another melee, particularly a heavy-hitter like Valghaz. 15-20 crit range either with Improved Crit or a keen scimitar and Butterfly Sting would make that Earthbreaker shine. A high acrobatics via Versatile Performance, Mobility feat, and Blade dash makes her a good flanker as well. Seize the Moment teamwork feat is also a possibility, assuming the game goes on that long, but it has two feat prerequisites. Outside that she has good attack/damage and can haste herself starting at level four.
For spells, just looking at buffs and utility and healing since she’ll never make the DC’s for offensive spells.
Since we’re starting in a city I only purchased gear Elaina needs to function, like pants. Using the cost of living rules for an Average 10gp/month for house/meals.

Applications are now closed. I will be reading over each application carefully and will post those chosen either tomorrow or Friday. Thank you everybody who showed interest.

Grand Lodge

Best of luck everybody!

Aye, best of luck.

Good luck everyone!

Break a leg!
Hopefully not your own....

Liberty's Edge

Break Arenel's leg!

Ha! You can try, though woe be those who do try.

The Exchange

May the odds ever be in your favour.

May the longest beard be chosen ;-)

Good luck to everyone!

This was not an easy decision, as I really enjoyed all the applications, but below are the characters that will embark on the Savage Tide adventure:

Berna "Mimi Pia" Pirnaz
Arenel Alresian
Chan Kay
Arya Semkhehay
Elaina Newberry
Valghaz Ironhammer

Please "check in" in the Discussion thread.

Thank you again to everybody who applied.
