As Elaina heads towards the stairs down, a horrific-looking creature lifts the grate leading into the hold into the air and throws it overboard. It looks around for a moment and fixes its gaze on Arenel.

Creature's pedipalp attack on Arenel: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

The creature reaches a pedipalp out towards the woman, but it stumbles as it climbs out of the hatch and misses badly.

The creature is medium-sized. Arenel and Valghaz are adjacent to it. Everybody else is within 30 feet of it, except Mimi, who is 40 feet away.

Knowledge (nature) DC 12:
This creature is a rhagodessa, an arachnid native to deep tropical jungles - definitely not native to Siren's Bay. Rhagodessas typically attempt to grab their prey with their overgrown pedipalps and then ravenously devour them.

Knowledge (nature) DC 17:
Rhagodessas are nimble predators, capable of quickly darting in, attacking, and withdrawing. They have Spring Attack.

vs. Feint added to the Combat section. This creature is mindless, however, and cannot be feinted.

"Jus' bloody kill it!" Valghaz swung his hammer at the beast, and fortunately it was the right tool for the job. It's carapace was like steel plate armor. Blunt force trauma was a sure fire way to do the job. Once more his hammer hit home, cracking the beast's shell. It staggered back, not quite dead yet. He gave it a disappointed look as he pulled his hammer back for another swing.

Elaina points at the grate as it goes flying through the air and shouts "See?! See?! That's exactly what I was talking about! Just throwing things straight into the water! Do you think anyone is going to clean that up? No!" The last thing she wants is to be grabbed by a sea monster, but it would make for a heroic tale to slay one. It doesn't have tentacles, anyways. she thinks. Not even a real sea monster. She moves quickly towards the crab thing, using her acrobatic and dance skills to daintily avoid stepping in any of the blood on the deck on the way.

Not having the brute strength of a dwarf with a hammer, the dancer approaches the creature from behind and strikes it in its less-armored abdomen. Her magic-infused blade easily slices through the carapace, splitting much of the spiders rear segment in half. She jumps away as soon as she strikes, trying to avoid blood spray from the death blow.

Well, that all went much easier than I anticipated.

With the overgrown bug splattered on the deck, Arenel begins interrogating one of the surrendered thugs.

"Vark didn't tell us anything! Just that we were to load some crates of animals onto this ship a few days ago, and then move them to another ship at midnight tonight. 20 gold for such a simple job. I didn't ask questions."

Valghaz nods at Elaina. "Turns out yer not useless after all! Keep it that way." As he says this he tries to wipe some of the copious amount of blood covering him off. "Wish I had that magicry right now. What's it called? Prestigy-tation? Somethin' like that. Anyways, if these men are as useless as they seem, we should move 'em below deck and lock 'em away."

@GM well my dice were kinda hot for this encounter. Critical hits like that are often hard to take into account...

"I hope you appreciate what I did. I'll have you know I'm very grabbable and I look delicious.". Elaina goes back for the stairs leading below decks. "Do whatever you want with your friends, I'm gonna go find the screaming lady. Maybe it's a banshee that haunts the ship."

What in the world was that thing? Are there others like it down there, what could they be transporting all these beasts for? Arya wonders.
Arya walks around the deck. "Of course we appreciate your help, I mean, that is what we're being paid for, to help each other find this ring. Speaking of which, I'm going to get a head start searching while you lock up the prisoners. Most logical place to start is the captain's cabin. At the very least, of the ring isn't hidden there, maybe Vark has a log book that can give us a bit more information than these men."

She approaches the door to the captain's cabin and tries it, hoping no one has taken the time to lock it before the fight.

Elaina: You are greeted by chaos when you descend into the hold. Countless cages holding exotic creatures line the place, all smoking from a poorly-lit fire. Several of the cages are busted open, their inhabitants nowhere to be found. A woman lays near the side of the biggest cage (also empty), a rather large chunk of her side missing. She is clearly dead. With a little deduction, you realize she was attempting to set fire to the cages (in response to Vark's call to "burn them all"), and the fire agitated the animals and the spider-like creature, who broke out of its cage, killed the woman and several other animals, and then broke out of the hold.

Arya: The captain's cabin is unlocked, and a quick search turns up a large trunk, within which is a pouch containing 100 platinum - probably Lavinia's missing payment.

Arya Perception DC 20:
You notice a secret panel in the headboard of the captain's bunk. Within is a ring with a rolled-up parchment threaded through it.

Once she's inside Arya begins to look around for the ring, Lavinia's money, or any evidence of Vark's plan.
She quickly finds the chest containing the platinum pieces but a quick search of the room turns up nothing more.

Arenel gave a nod to Elaina in thanks for the help, then Elaina spoke and Arenel sighed. "If you look so delicious why'd it come after me first?" Arya meticulously works her way around the room, checking under or behind anything she can move and feeling along the furniture for hidden panels.
Finally, as she runs her fingers along the headboard of the captain's bunk, she finds what she's looking for. A hidden panel slides away to reveal the ring.
Unexpectedly, a small piece of parchment is rolled up and threaded through the ring. Pulling it out and unrolling the note reveals a strange message.

"Chimera looks to sunrise. Cyclops looks to sunset. Medusa looks to sunrise, Umber hulk looks to sunset. Basilisk looks to sunrise."

"Okay..."
Arya takes the ring and places it safely in her pocket, then walks out to rejoin the others.
"I've got it", she says, momentarily showing off the ring.
"But what do you make of this?" She repeats the message on the parchement. Something else Lavinia needs for the vault or..." She trails off.

Female Human Magus 2; Init +4, Per -1; AC 13/10/13; HP 10/16; F+4, R+0, W+2

Arenel holds out her hand to take the parchment and looks it over slowly. "Might just be, I say we take it along with us just to be safe." She said as she handed it back. "We have the ring, did you find the coin that she paid him?" She asked.

While Arya searched the ship Valghaz moved the prisoners below deck. As he got the last of them down he quickly looked around for a room to lock them in.

Can I assume that he finds a place to lock them in?

Valghaz beamed a smile at the monk. "It surely be good to hear that! The gods know our hearts, and will surely smile upon yours." As he said this, he began slowly changing to himself, and causing his palms to fill with water, which he used to begin cleaning the blood off of himself.

Valghaz secures the prisoners in the brig while Mimi tends their wounds. No further Heal checks needed.

Elaina looks over the hold. There are a variety of parrots, monkeys, lizards, and snakes still in cages. It seems obvious that this is a smuggling operation - exotic animals have become rather popular as pets in Siren's Bay recently, and the city has put strict limits on their import.

FYI, Soller Vark is alive (unconscious) if you want to interrogate him.

"One thing I didn't find was anything about what Vark and his crew were up to."

Elaina lets one of the monkeys out of its cage, then finds a large, colorful parrot. She opens the cage and takes the bird, hugging it to her chest and burying her face in its plumage. "Mm. I love birds." she mumbles into its feathers.

"This is Cerulean Smaragdine Von Polychroma and he's the most handsome bird in the world." Elaina announces when she rejoins the others, introducing the parrot. "There's more like him. I bet they're hungry, we should take the boat back to its slip and find someone who has food. The carnivores could eat the bodies, I guess."

"That's some additional step needed to open the vault." the bard says matter-of-factly when Arya shares her information. "Such riddles are common in stories about treasure. As for what they were doing: obviously holding these poor animals hostage."

As much as Elaina wants to ensure the birds are treated well and not "disposed of" by the guard or navy, she doesn't want to be associated with a bunch of dead smugglers, either. "We should go to lady Rebvorn. And give an anonymous tip to someone about what's going on on the ship. Or we could let all the monkeys go on deck. That would draw someone's attention for sure."

She whispers to the bird she's squeezing to her chchesfor a few moments then says "If we tell anyone, the ship will probably be impounded for a long time for an investigation. Rebvorn might not want that."

She smiles and claps the young dancer on the back.

Vark mutters imprecations as you march him to the guardhouse. After telling you story to the guards, they look delighted. As one leads Vark deeper into the guardhouse, you hear him say, "Not so high and mighty now, are you Vark?"

Mimi shuffles her feet uncomfortably.

"Well, the hold is a real mess I'm afraid. Vark was keeping exotic animals in it. When we came aboard, he tried to burn everything down there to hide the evidence. One of the animals was a rhagodessa. They are vicious and nasty. It killed several of the other animals before we killed it."

How much does Arya owe for the row boat? She will make a point of settling the debt before they take Vark to the city guard.

Arya nods and steps forward to begin a full report on the days events.
"The Blue Nixie had been moored out in the harbor, away from its usual place in the docks, however, activity suggested that Vark was preparing the vessel to set sail. Thankfully we managed to row out the the ship and board them before they were able to escape.
Thanks in no small part to our good man Ironhammer here, we made short work of the crew. As Mimi says, it appears that Vark was using the Nixie as a part of a smuggling operation, transporting exotic animals, probably to be sold as pets on the black market.
Thanks to that we were able to secure Vark a nice dark cell in the guardhouse.

On to more important matters..."

Arya steps aside to reveal the chest full of platinum pieces.

"Yours, I believe. And I found this in the captain's cabin."
She pulls the ring from her pocket. "Your father's ring, and some kind of clue, or riddle..." She hands over both the ring, and the rolled up parchment for Lavinia's inspection.

"It seems your ship was being used to smuggle exotic animals, madam. Very shrewd of that Vark; using someone else's ship would give him 'passable denial,'" he says with a learned smirk. Arya, the boat cost a total of 2 sp to rent.

"Smuggling exotic animals? I'm actually relieved. I'd thought Vark had something more nefarious in mine."

Upon seeing the 100 platinum and the ring, Lavinia breaks into a smile. She studies the riddle on the paper, then rolls it back up and idly taps the paper against her face, deep in thought. "I'm at a loss as to what this means, honestly. It does look like my father's handwriting, so I imagine it's somehow important."

"In any case, well done! I hardly expected you to solve this conundrum so expeditiously. You have earned your payment, and I'll pay you just as soon as I get access to my vault. "I intend to head to Black Thatch Manor immediately to access my family's vault. If you agree to be hired on, perhaps you could accompany me? This..." she taps the paper, "...implies it will not be a simple matter of walking into the vault. In addition, I vaguely recall my father mentioning something about buying an iron creature to guard the vault."

Arya's eyes grow wide at the offer of a permanent position in the lady's service.
100 gold every month? This could be her ticket out of the slums for good, and she wouldn't even have to come crawling back to her father!
"You can count me in ma'am! I'll gladly accept the offer."

A hundred gold a month? I barely make a quarter that dancing. I could buy an entire house with that. Elaina thinks. Being some kind of mercenary isn't what she wants to do, but it's a lot of money. As long as she doesn't ask me to kill people. "I guess it's worth trying out. But not if I have to buy new clothes every day." She's also rather desperate to see what might lie within a magically locked vault.

Some quick mental calculations places Lady Lavinia's offer at an approximately sevenfold increase in her monthly wage. A single month's wage would be more gold than Mimi has ever seen at one time before.

"Yes, absolutely. I accept." She says rather dazed.

Arenel smirked as she clapped Valghaz on the shoulder with a nod as Arya spoke of him. "She's right, you where amazing." She told him.

When offered a 100 gold a month Arenel's eyes lip up a bit. "Count me in." Arenel said with a solid nod. "Honest work and it will keep my father's friends from asking me to work for them... every time."

Presumably, Chan agrees as well.

Lavinia seems truly enthused that you agree. She summons Kora to hire a coach, and when it arrives, you pile in and travel to High Market, where you take a ferry over to Black Thatch Manor. It's likely the first time any of you have been near the mansion. It is a multi-level building with tiled roofs, grand pillars, and more windows than can be counted.

Lavinia leads you to a side entrance, through several well-kept halls, and into a small office where an officious-looking man, thin to the point of skeletal, writes in a ledger, his quill scratching against the paper. When you enter, he looks up. "Miss Van Rebvorn. How can I assist you today?"

Your shows the man thew ring you recovered. "I would like access to my vault, Lorimar."

The clerk inspects the ring, nods, and closes the ledger. "Follow me."

Lorimar leads you to a spiral staircase that descends into a large circular chamber. Over a dozen five-foot-wide hallways radiate out from the central vault; each hallway is ten feet long and ends at a single iron door. Lorimar points to one of the halls. "Your family vault, Miss Van Rebvorn. Good day." He gives a slight bow and heads back up the staircase, leaving you alone with Lavinia.

The hallway to the Van Rebvorn vault ends at the solid-looking iron door, which is emblazoned with a rune - a burning four-pointed star. Above the door, inscribed in flowing script on a polished silver plaque, is the name, "Van Rebvorn." A single handle protrudes from teh door, just below a circular depression bearing the mark of the Van Rebvorn signet. Lavinia's brow furrows at the site of the rune.

Knowledge (local) DC 15:
The same star sybol appears on the sign of a building on the western edge of the Trade district. The building is the Archivist's Sanctum, a chapterhouse of a small group of sages, loremasters, and a few adventurers known as the Archivists.

Lavinia inserts her ring in the small depression above the handle. The door flashes once with blue light, then slowly swings open on creaking hinges, revealing a domed chamber, with a floor of polished green marble. Two fifteen-foot-wide alcoves have lower ceilings and feature marble pillars carved to resemble coiling snakes. In the center of the room, five similar pillars are embedded into the walls, rising up thirty feet to the dome overhead, which bears a huge representation of the same four-pointed star.

Completely unaware of any connections regarding the symbol, Valghaz followed behind. He was filled with pride at the noble patronage, and he couldn't help but think of what he'd do with the gold. Already he was planning out his next great project: a suit of full plate armor. It would be his masterpiece, and he would spare no expense in gold or effort. Yes, indeed, life was good....

Elaina was almost giddy as the iron door swung open, expecting to see mountains of gold or an army of golems. She's visibly disappointed by the lack of treasure hoards, though the marble floor must be worth quite a lot. "Wow. This room is uselessly large. I should have brought Cerulean. There's lots of room for him to fly around here.." She had left the rescued parrot at Rebvorn's place, thinking a presumably underground vault was no place for a bird. She summons four glowing orbs that streak off and chase each other up and around the pillars, more for her own entertainment than anything else. "So is there more to this place?"
