As Arya's blade glides through the zombie's flesh with little response from the creature she rethinks her strategy. At the first opportunity she withdraws from the combat to stand beside the alchemist but is puzzled to find her returning a flask to her bandolier.
What's going on?
Arya turns back to see Elaina still among the undead.

"Elaina what are you doing?!" She cries out. "Get away from the monsters!"

Elaina gracefully slashes her scimitar through the chest of the creature in front of her, sending it toppling to the ground, unmoving. Immediately after she steps back, Mimi throws another flask, this one exploding in a torrent of acid that causes the creature it hit to partially dissolve into a pile of limbs and melting flesh. The acid splashes onto the other nearby creature, which rushes forward and bites at Valghaz. The pile of goo seems to impede its movements, however, causes the attack to miss horribly.

Creature #3 Reflex save (DC 14) vs. splash damage from Mimi's bomb: 1d20 ⇒ 13 (FAIL) for 6 acid damage

Creature #3 charging bite attack on Valghaz: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 = 7 (MISS) for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 damage.

Unable to sit back because of the zombie coming at him, Valghaz brought his hammer around and at it. It connected with a crunch, but he knew that it would not be enough because of his weapon' blunt nature. Still, it would be close to being destroyed.

"Damned zombies. Probably a necromancer 'round 'ere."

End battle dance.

"I can't slay them when I'm 'away' from them, Arya." Elaina responds as her zombie falls. Now SHE'S telling me what to do! Why? She doesn't care what happens to me. I wish they would go away and stop following me around like lost puppies. she thinks bitterly. She chops at the remaining monster's shoulder as it passes by, but she's distracted by the melting one, trying to avoid steeping in its remains. She feels a twinge of anger as the monster inexplicably bites at Valghaz. I killed your brother, after all.

"What is it Vanthus said? Say hello to Penkus's ghost while you're down there? I think we now know what he meant about that." Arenel pointed out. "I will say! We need to move, Valghaz is the best equipped to deal with undead! We need to give him the space he needs to move and come in when he needs us and tells us to." Arenel told the group as she took a step back.

"Which means, Elaina... GET THE F~+@ BACK!" Arenel shouted at the bard.

Valghaz's hammer crushes bones in the zombie in front of him in what would surely have been a mortal blow to any living creature, but incredibly, the zombie still stands. This time, it turns to Elaina and attempts to take a bite out of her. She manages to dance out of the way of the bite, luckily.

Valghaz steps forward once more. With the zombie focusing on Elaina and her weaving defense, he brings his hammer down on the back of it's head. Regardless of it's resistance to blunt damage, little could survive such a blow. What once was a head was a pulpy mess.

With the threat ended, Valghaz roughly slammed his hammer down onto the still twitching corpse.

"We need tae settle this now. Either we fight as a team, or we die alone. E'eryone here has somethin' that they can contribute, one way or another. But iffin' we dunnae respect one another, iffin' we nay be willin' tae bleed fer each other, one of us is goin' tae die. Before we go any further, let's get our grievances out. Valghaz sighed and nodded. I knew that there was a reason why I liked her. The lass has the mind of a dwarf. "Be that as it may, we have been hired together. This wasn't a group where any of us chose our comrades. But if we are tae live 'ere, then we can't run off alone an' we can't let each other die. "Then how would you suggest dealing with her? The rest of us work together fairly well, given that we only just met a day or so ago. I've tried to reach her, it didn't work. If you've got an idea handsome I'm all ears." She told him as she leaned against the wall.

Elaina uses magic to clean her blade after the last zombie falls and wonders why her magic sword seemed so ineffective. It shouldn't have just killed it, it should have cut it in two! She cringes when Valghaz speaks. Elaina teetered on the edge of self control on a good day, and this wasn't a good day. She wants to scream at them for screaming at her, but suddenly feels weary. Instead she says quietly "My only grievance is that I'm being followed around by four people that are mean to me. Why don't you all just go away and leave me alone? You can find your own way out or you can sit here in the dark and I'll send someone to rescue you, but I'm not going to listen to your insults anymore. I never done nothing to any of you, I tried to stop you from coming down here, if just one of you had listened to me none of this would be happening." She preferred being alone at any rate, except when she slept, and she had no intention of sleeping down here.

She summons up her dancing lights and takes a closer look at the undead, lifting ones' lip with the point of her sword to inspect it's teeth. "And there's no necromancer. These are vampire thralls like I suspected. This is what happens to a normal person when their vampire master feeds them vampire blood to make them stronger. They get stronger, for a while, but then..." She stands and shakes her head, hopping over the gooey zombie in the doorway. "My other grievance is that I don't have any apples. I'm hungry." It had been at least an hour since she'd last eaten. Unable to think of anything the others might say that she could possibly want to hear, she goes to inspect the broken crates and barrels in the zombie room. Do vampire smugglers smuggle apples?

Arenel holds her hand out to Elaina as she looked at Valghaz. "I'll give it another try." She told him.

"Elaina, we aren't mean, we're realist. If you didn't keep being selfish and stupid then we wouldn't have to point these things out. And you have done things to us Elaina, you've insulted all of us at one point, even if you didn't know it, and by always believing everything revolves around you, you are putting everyone here in great danger. You act like a child who is reading some story and is trying to play the hero, but failing in every way possible." Arenel told her point blank. "Oh and those aren't thralls, did you not listen to anything Valghaz said? They are zombies, and I'd believe anything he says about undead over a single thing you'd ever say as he is the one who actually studies the religion of this world!" She rolled her eyes as she crossed her arms. "And you said that you where staying up top! So we thought our backs would be covered, but no! You told us a lie and came down here anyways! If you had stayed up there like you said you where going to the rest of this wouldn't have happened."

Mimi stands with her back pressed against the wall. Her expression looks no less terrified of the conversation that it did of the zombies.

"I'm... just fine with everyone. I like all of you,..really. B-but it's important you understand that these..." Mimi moves her hand over one of the bombs in her bandolier.

"They don't discriminate. Anyone within range of the blast will be harmed. It's a problem I'm working on. I just.. don't quite have the solution yet. I'm very sorry but you'll have to be mindful of it."

Happy to see Valghaz got in with a much more effective hit while I was typing out my attack.

Arya wipes the putrid flesh from her blade and slides the rapier back into its scabbard as the group takes a break to discuss the tension.

Leaning back against the cool wall of the passage she sighs and lets the stone cool the hot blood she feels rising within her.

I can't believe I thought you were going to make a good friend. She thinks of Elaina, reminiscing on their first meeting.

Arya doesn't have much to say that Arenel hasn't already perfectly said, so instead, she pulls an apple from out of her backpack and wipes it clean on her shirt.
Stepping forward toward the bard, she extends the fruit toward her.

"Here. I don't know why you think I hate you. I'm just here trying to earn some gold, that's all any of us here are doing. Now, we've been hired to work as a team. That means that we stick together and that we listen to what each other have to say. So what that means is we're not about to let you wander off by yourself down here. It also means that you need to hear what Valghaz is saying when he tells you these aren't thralls of some vampire cult, they're the bodies of the dead."
Arya doesn't really understand the distinction but she feels that it is probably an important one, and she trusts that the cleric would know.
"I'm not saying we need to like each other, but can we not just try and get along?"

Arya stares hopefully into Elaina's big blue eyes.

"There you go again, saying I'm the problem! Tell me one thing I've done wrong, one way I've failed!" Elaina snaps at Arenel, rage boiling up inside. After a few seconds she throws her hands up and shouts "Nothing! I wasn't going to stay up there alone. I'd be dead or kidnapped if I had, nevermind that I never said I would! I've done half the heavy lifting! All of you insulted or were mean to me first. You think it's fair that I sit silently while you say mean things to me and profit off my labors?" She didn't particularly care about Arenel or Mimi, but Valghaz not liking her was a disappointment. She loved dwarves and elves since they usually showed more patience with her than humans.

She stares at Arya for a few moments, teeth gritted, sword hand shaking with fury. Arya hadn't insulted her yet, but she wasn't what Elaina had thought she was at first, either. She was acting like she wanted to be my friend, but now she's siding with the others. At least she's not mean. Not yet, but they all are in the end. She thinks darkly. Her mood swings and she plucks the apple from the rogues hand, blinking angry tears away. "Except you. You may stay with me."

Handsome? She called me handsome? Valghaz almost missed everything that was said afterwords, but with a force of will dragged his mind back to the matter at hand. Elaina speaking made that easier.

"I see nay use for a bard who only sings for herself. If that is who ye want tae be, then stay 'ere with yer apple. If ye truly think ye've done half the heavy liftin' yerself, then ye'll be able to get out o' 'ere alone an' get a payin' job without us. "I already told you to go away. I tried leaving and you followed me. You can go that way." She points to the western end of the hallway. "This way's mine, I discovered it. The only thing I'll have to do once I bring Lordling Revborn to Lady Revborn is renegotiate my pay rate since she won't be needing you." Elaina says with arrogant confidence. She didn't feel confident. She wanted to cry. They were supposed to be my friends! Nkosama said I could make friends with the people I work with, but nobody likes me! She had tried to distance herself from her friend and mentor once they got to the city and her behavior had suffered for it. She could apologize to her companions, but she hated backing down more than almost anything.

Arya stands mouth agape as Elaina takes the apple without even a 'thank you'. That apple was a peace offering and she hasn't changed at all. I can't believe she still won't work together with us.

She probably think's she's entitled to that apple, just like everything else. That's why she doesn't understand.

"You just don't get it, do you?"

Arya looks back and forth between Elaina and the rest of the group. Her heart aches and her eyes begin to well with tears. She never expected to be siding with the bullies. She knows too much what it is like to be on the receiving end of everyone's ire.

Realising her hand is still outstretched toward the bard, Arya lets it fall to her side, and slowly she walks over to the rest of her companions.

"No Arya. Sadly she never will." Arenel said softly to the young sailor. "And you cannot control where we go child." She said as she looked back to Elaina. "Throw a fit all you wish but we can walk down which ever way we so please. You do not dictate anything we do. You are on your own."

With that she finished speaking and looked to Valghaz. "Lead the way please, you've got the eyes we need." She told him with a smirk.

"Nope." Elaina agrees. "I'm just too stupid to ever understand why I should let you all verbally abuse me." She laughs at Arya. "Isn't that the first thing you said to me? 'You sound just like the others.' Well now you're one of the 'others'. What is that? Irony? Poetic justice? Whatever it is, you have to admit it's pretty funny." She crosses the zombie room and opens the next set of double doors. Her head was pounding. She wanted to be out of sight of the others.

Elaina:
Map

Through the double doors is another hallway. This one bends to the south after about 40 feet, blocking your view of what's ahead. To the side is another set of slightly ajar double doors.

Perception DC 15 and Elaina:
You hear dreadful moaning echoing through the tunnels, followed by the sound of gnashing teeth.

Everybody Else:
Map

The western double doors open into a large room with four great wooden pillars rising up to support the ceiling, which sags dangerously in places and is thick with hanging strands of fungus. Several doors line the walls - one to the west (from which comes a muffled sloshing sound), two to the north (the western of which is badly damaged and hangs askew on its one remaining hinge), and one on the eastern wall, just north of the doors from which you entered. To the south, the ceiling has collapsed, leaving the southern part of the room choked in debris. A rippling pool of water reaches halfway into the room from this wall of stone and rubble. It seems that a wooden pier once extended into this pool, but all that remains now are several rotten wooden pilings protruding from the water. A man's body floats face down among them.

Just moments after you enter the room, you hear dreadful moaning echoing through the tunnels, followed by the gnashing of teeth.

Seeing no immediate threat, Elaina closes the doors behind her. She slides down to the floor, her back pressed to the closed doors. Her vision is blurred by anger and she fumbles with her sleeve, trying to push it up, but giving up. Holding her breath, she slices through the fabric on her forearm with the tip of her sword, leaving a shallow cut in her flesh. She watches, transfixed, as a dark, warm stain slowly spreads through the fabric around the cut until she grows lightheaded from not breathing. She closes her eyes, leans her head back against the door, and slowly exhales, relief sweeping through her body. That was close. I thought my head was going to explode. Nkosama would kill me if he knew I cut myself again, but I'll probably be dead in the next few hours anyways. Eaten by vampire thralls, what a way to go.

Why did I say that to Arya? She thinks, confused, as she stares up at the stone ceiling. She didn't say anything mean to me, just abandoned me. She could still be my friend. Mimi could be, too. She was only mean to me after that guy fell through the roof, maybe she was just startled. And Chan seemed to like me, wherever he went. That's three out of five that could be my friends! That's not so bad. I just have to talk to them without Valghaz and Arenel there. They make me mad and then I say things I don't mean. The thought cheers her and she slowly rises to her feet, rubbing her eyes with her fists.

She knew she would have to find her way back to the others eventually. As an adventurer she was utterly unprepared. She had no water and no way to carry water if she found some. No food, no way to make fire. She wasn't very strong, and her armor was almost more than she could bear to carry by itself, so she had been counting on the others to carry anything else she might need on extended 'business'. She also hadn't expected to be exploring a huge cave today. Despite this, she wasn't ready to go back yet. She needed time to think and calm down. After opening the doors back into the zombie room so she won't be trapped, she approaches the next set of double doors and peeks inside, sending the wisps in through the gap to light the room. Her throat was dry so she takes a bite of the apple she had taken from Arya, savoring the juice. That noise is creepy. I'll save whoever's making it so they stop making it.

Arya stares forlornly at the ruins of the pier extending towards the collapsed section of the room. "Well if the smugglers did have a secret entrance to the tunnel system by boat, I suspect this was it." She sighs, before noticing the body in the water.
"Oh gods! Is that Penkus do you think? What did Vanthus do to him?

As her worried words are interrupted by the sounds echoing from the gloom, Arya quickly goes for the hilt of her rapier, drawing the long blade from its scabbard and reading for action.

Mimi had told Elaina she would leave smudge marks on the wall as they moved so she could find them if she wanted. But thinking more on it, she doesn't think the torch would leave anything that would be easily visible.

Instead she takes out her ink bottle and uses her finger to draw an arrow in ink pointing their direction every few yards.

"This doesn't look all that promising." Mimi says as she looks around the room.

"We should be careful about that body. I don't think zombies breath. It may bite."

As she listens to the sounds, Mimi's hand goes to her bandolier, resting on one of the bombs there for comfort.

Valghaz didn't hear the sounds of gnashing teeth. Unaware, he walked to the corpse to check it, his hammer at the ready. "Might be a zombie, but I'll check it out incase there be somethin' on it we should see. Arenel, watch me back while I do this lass. Mimi, Arya, watch the door. Dunnae want any surprises in the dark."

You look into an oddly shaped room containing three pillars and four niches in the wall. From what you can tell, the pillars are unadorned and the niches are empty.

Map (The B token is the body)

As Valghaz approaches the water to check on the body, five crabs, each nearly two feet in diameter with pincers the size of daggers, burst out of the water.

Enemy initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Party initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Enemies act first.

The crabs skitter around Valghaz, their overgrown pincers snapping at the dwarf. Three of the attacks manage to sneak through the armor on the dwarf's legs, inflicting painful cuts.

Seeing nothing to cause alarm, Elaina pushes through the doors. Munching on her apple, she walks to the westernmost alcove to inspect it closer. These look like they were used to hold sculptures of beautiful ladies. Well, maybe not beautiful ladies, but some kind of...somethings. She muses.

Inspect the alcoves, counterclockwise starting from the westernmost one, then the pillars, counterclockwise starting from the northern one, for a total of seven perception checks.

Mimi chokes down a shriek and looks for a way to attack the crabs.

If she can lob an acid flask at the crabs while keeping her friends out of the splash zone she will.

If she can't get a shot with her friends clear, she fires her crossbow at one of the crabs. If needed she moves around the flank to take a shot at a crab not currently in melee.

Um, if you don't mind I'll take that attack roll for the crossbow too!

Mimi's acid flask hits squarely on one of the crabs, nearly melting the creature away in a torrent of sulfuric liquid. The two crabs next to it are splashed with a minor amount of the acid, but other than high-pitched squeals, they seem to ignore it and continue their attacks. cutting into both Valghaz and Arenel with surprising ease.
