"Sorry... your description doesn't ring a bell. Maybe you were mistaken after all and you dined at the Arch and Lark... which would be really fitting to this poisoning tale. So, shall we get going? I can't wait to spend another night on the pillory, it made wonders to my back..." Caggan is clearly covering the girl. Perhaps she was special for him or perhaps he does so to everyone under his charge.

Anarxos is content with leaving Pava run the show... for now. He watches from the back, raising an eyebrow as he beholds Caggan taking the fall for someone else. My, my. The innkeeper is growing a spine here. Perhaps that girl is dear to him, so we'd better check if we can grab her later. We could exploit that soft spot he has...

Sorry for the late post; last night was one of those go-to-bed-early-whether-you-want-to-or-not nights.

"Caggan, you can cut the act. We're all primary witnesses; I saw her ghost-white face as she motioned to you to not interrupt as we left. You know that what we say is true, and you'll only bring further punishment down on yourself if you lie to us about it. If you're coming peacefully, come now and let's be done with it." Pava approaches Caggan and guides him outside with one hand on the back of his arm; as long as he doesn't resist, that's the extent of the force that she will use.

"You'll ride back to the jail on Ramael," she says, indicating the camel. She'll help boost him up into the saddle.

Vicenzo kept his distance from Caggan; the man seemed too cocky like he was planning to do something.

On their way back, he asked, "We'll need names of all your workers, even the temporary ones. Is that understood?"

He then commented to his companions, "What's the punishment for two accounts of attempted murder?'

Caggan only grunts at Pava's threat but decides not to talk to you. Instead, he moves without resisting, climbing over Ramael. You guide Caggan back to the jail with no problem... you see no soul in the dark of the night... the curfew is working wonders apparently.

When you arrive at the jail, you find Ahreni sit on a chair looking a bit puzzled and impatient. Caggan also doesn't resist when you get him out of Ramael and move him inside the jail for questioning. Caggan unlikely quiet.

As you reach the middle of the room, Caggan stops and suddenly throws Pava's hand away from him... in a matter of seconds he changes. His somewhat pale skin gets darker and tougher... his teeth grow larger and takes the form of deadly tusks while his face elongates. Finally, his whole body is covered in coarse hair and his feet turn into hooves! The already strong man faces you, his muscles menacing to burst his shirt and apron...

Anarxos's mouth is agape as he beholds the innkeeper change in front of his eyes. He quickly recovers his wits, though, and warns his companions. "A wereboar! Don't get bitten, or you might turn into one! Use silver weapons if you can."

The nobleman then downs a bubbly purple extract, and a transluscent shield consequently appears beside him, protecting his flank. He then closes the distance between him and Caggan, drawing his enameled rapier.

Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

She murmurs a short prayer while standing on the chair, "Devils of Hell, aid us to defeat this vile beast." (Calling as a standard action.)
Calling:
Calling (Ex): At 2nd level, the cavalier can make a short prayer as a standard action, filling her with confidence in her abilities. At any point in the next minute, she can receive a competence bonus on an ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check equal to her Charisma modifier. She must declare that she is using this bonus before the roll is made. She can use this ability up to four times per day, once for each type of check or roll.

Finally, she calls out loudly to Caggan. "You are mine, beast. I don't care about the silver, I'll bring you down anyway. Fight me!" (Challenge as a swift action)
Challenge:
Challenge: Once per day, a cavalier can challenge a foe to combat. As a swift action, the cavalier chooses one target within sight to challenge. The cavalier's melee attacks deal extra damage whenever the attacks are made against the target of his challenge. This extra damage is equal to the cavalier's level. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day for every three levels beyond 1st, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level.

Challenging a foe requires much of the cavalier's concentration. The cavalier takes a –2 penalty to his Armor Class, except against attacks made by the target of his challenge.

The challenge remains in effect until the target is dead or unconscious or until the combat ends. Each cavalier's challenge also includes another effect which is listed in the section describing the cavalier's order.

Order of the Star: Whenever an order of the star cavalier issues a challenge, she receives a +1 morale bonus on all her saving throws as long as she is threatening the target of her challenge. This bonus increases by +1 for every four levels the cavalier possesses.

Caggan doesn't pay much attention to Pava's challenge, even if she possess a huge weapon in her hands. Anarxos words have much more power, even if a little weird... The rogue moves swift and stabs the wereboar... fortunately for him, his though skin blocked most of the damage. Vicenzo's gob is far more effective, hitting the beastman in his eye, staggering him as he screams in pain.

Caggan moves away from you once more but keeping Ahreni within his sight. Botting Ahreni. Also, Melani, don't forget that your channel evil has the chance of causing good enemies to become sickened!

Pava moves forward and slashes with her big sword, deeply wounded Caggan, but the beastman is still standing. Soon after you are washed by a wave of profane energy, who soothes a small fraction of Ahreni's wounds and slightly weakens Caggan.

Hoping to give Ahreni another flanking opportunity, Anarxos moves to the other side of the railing and soon Ahreni stabs Caggan once more before stepping away, drawing even more blood... the wereboar had so far endured a lot of wounds and even so he keeps fighting!

Vicenzo lobs a vial of alchemist's fire that fully hits Caggan in his chest, filling the room with the stench of burnt flesh and hair. Caggan screams but, even so, continues to fight. A bit of the flammable liquid also spills on Ahreni, Anarxos and Pava, as well as on the floor, starting a minor fire in some points. Only graphic, no need to worry about it.

A couple seconds later, Caggan returns to his human form, leaving no clue of his curse behind.

Combat is over! Wereboars have Ferocity, so Pava's attack instantly killed the already critically wounded man.

He inspected the corpse trying to determine whether there was a way to identify a were-beast's corpse.

"I don't know whether the curse is transferred by blood or not. I would just stay clear of it."

He shook his head, "This was clearly a man driven to insanity and we were just defending ourselves, right?"

Ahreni slumps in the corner, pressing hard against the wound in her belly. "At this rate I'm going to be a mass of pure scar tissue down here..." She groans. After a few moments of deep breathing she looks up. although she declines to stand.

"Pava, take the body outside. Perhaps to the church - we need to show everyone what he was. If we don't then the townsfolk will place the blame on us - we have to show them and show them quickly. If we have to villify him then so be it. We might even be able to pin the death at the tannery on him. Better the people hate him than us." She slumps against the wall again. "I can set the rumours going in the morning... just... get him outside now so people see him!"

Propaganda and damage control - Ahreni has good priorities...

As Melani bends over the rogue to administer to her she says The body appears totally human Ahreni. Perhaps there are tests that will show it for what it was. But most people are not going to take our word for it. We have a problem it seems. But I think there must be others who knew of his curse in town. I am unsure if we can get them to step forward and admit what they knew. Now be still and accept my Master's gifts. Anarxos pants as the fight ends, at the same time exhilarated by it, and smitten by the toll it took on his mind. No time to rest though, there's a starting fire to prevent from spreading - Anarxos uses a blanket to snuff out the lingering flames before they spread or cause any real damage. It is only then that his mind resumes working like a well-oiled clockwork mechanism. "I agree with Melani, there's no proof of what it is. However, he did attack us and we did defend ourselves, and we shouldn't hide from it. Instead, perhaps a public statement would be preferable. In any case, Caggan's death needs to go public, especially with everyone seeing us arresting him."

Pondering the case at hand for a minute, the nobleman cannot help but wonder. "This turn of events is ripe with opportunity though. As long as we can prove his true bestial nature, of course. Surely someone knew about that? Or maybe he kept a diary? Perhaps we could conduct a search in his quarters, look for clues in his room."

@Pava: if you used your ability, it counted against your daily use, but taking in consideration that you'll probably sleep soon after, I believe it won't cause you any harm.

Melani is able to completely heal everyone, but is unable to discover if Ahreni is affect or not by the curse.

Anarxos:
You have heard numerous tales about how to identify a were-creature, like possessing an index finger longer than the middle finger or tuffs of hair inside the mouth but you always regarded these tales as 'rabble nonsense'. Nevertheless, Caggan possess none of these features. Aside from that, nothing comes to your mind.

About the curse, you remember reading a book detailing it. You recall that only natural lycanthropes are able to pass the curse by biting (or goring) but there is no way to discern between a natural and an afflicted one. There is also no way to discover if someone is cursed or not. Someone afflicted by the curse possess no symptoms until the night of the next full moon, when the victim involuntarily assumes animal form and forgets his or her own identity.

Anything else tonight? It is already quite late and, thanks to the curfew, there is no one in the streets, so any public announcement would have to wait for tomorrow.

Anarxos shares his knowledge with his companions. "I've heard the curse would pass on with one of these creatures' bite or gore, though nothing is ever certain in this matter. Alas, there's no way of knowing whether you've been afflicted or not before the next full moon. I would advise, for that night in particular, that we bind you and watch over you for the whole night, just in case something happens."

After cleaning as much of the were-blood off her hands and arms as she can manage, Pava grabs the blanket that Anarxos used to put out the fire. She absently-mindedly gives her hands another dry scrub on a corner of the blanket as she walks over to the innkeeper's body. She lays the blanket over the corpse and begins to roll the husky man towards her, rolling it into the blanket. The young girl seems to have no trouble moving the large body around.

"I'm happy to get rid of the body, now or later, but I think Anarxos and Melani are right; there is no evidence left of his unnatural form. We'll be seen as murderers."

She shakes her head, and a small noise catches in her throat before she continues. You're not sure if it was a laugh cut short, or a sob, but her shoulders jerk in time with the sound.

"Damn Glorious Reclamation. This is their fault, you know. They've incited the town to this point, where speaking the honest truth won't be believed." The girl looks up, a fire burning in her eyes as she looks around the room. "We need to strike them back. Didn't someone say something about the widow now rabble-rousing against us? What was his name, Marcellus? His b%*!&." She spits. "Maybe something can be done there. This town is losing all sense right now, we have to get control over this before we can't anymore."

Vicenzo, "Well, we all saw the truth but may not be able to convince other people. I agree that if the corpse does not tell us anything then we surely must find someone in town who knew about this and can come forth and back up our story."

Wounds are healed. Its gonna sound lame that an unarmed and unarmored man had to be killed with a great sword while in custody. That will not fly. Also, SOP needs to be to use manacles even if they come along peacefully. Lastly might Anarxos or Vicenzo know about the herbal treatment to ward off the disease. Specifically I think Belladonna gives a bonus to the save if eaten in time. Not sure. I did not look it up.

"Then we take him for judgement by the Archbaron." Ahreni relies, her voice much stronger now Melani's magic has taken hold. "This is going to scar something terrible but I don't think it would be conclusive proof by itself - beside, if I am infected they'll just say it is the Inheritor's punishment, or that I'm some kind of monster..." Her voice turns bitter at that thought.

"We can't strike against the widow though. She's firmly in the pocket of the church, a move against her will be a move against them. I think Claggan has to vanish - if we make a big show of dragging him off in a covered wagon to the Archbaron then we at least explain his disappearence - an extended prison stay accounts for the rest. Maybe... I'll do what I can as Anya to rehabilitate our image, Cimri and I are building a network too - they can spread rumours as well, try and seed the idea that Claggan was more than he seemed."

Ahreni makes her way towards the door, still wobbling slightly but no more pale than normal. "Ash House is all we have, but it could be a lot worse. Come on, I need sleep too."

Calistril 23 (last days of winter) <- Decided to keep you informed about the current date!

After covering Caggan's body and locking the jail, you walk the silent streets of Longacre without seeing a single soul. The full moon outside make the walk back to the ash house easy and soon after you see yourselves getting ready to sleep... it isn't easy to rest your mind, though, thinking about all the trouble that will probably follow you in the morning because of the barkeeper's death.

In a dire contrast to your mood, the following morning bears no clouds... it is getting warmer each day, announcing a possible hot spring on the following months. It appears that, so far, no information about Caggan's death has slipped...

So, what are your plans for today? I believe you have not reached a conclusion yet...

Pava is glad to get some sleep, and glad that it was restful enough, but wishes she weren't so torn with misgivings. She gets up when daylight streams through the windows with the others, and is mostly quiet throughout the morning, making no small talk and keeping to herself.

She is quiet during the trip to the jail, answering any questions with short answers if asked, but otherwise not engaging anyone in conversation.

Once they arrive at the jail, the corpse is still where it was left, wrapped in a blanket.

The topic now unavoidable, she asks the important question. "Well, what are we going to do with him? Ahreni, I think you might have had the best idea. Make a big show and ship him off to a 'bigger jail.' I don't like the lie of it, but I don't think it can be helped. We're just not going to be believed about the truth of what happened last night. I think we should still do some research and see if we could reasonably defend a true telling, but without some other evidence, we'll only be seen as murderers covering our tracks."

Vicenzo agreed, "If we make a showing of sending him off then we run the risk of the blame being pinned on the Archbaron. Something I'm sure he would rather not have."

He thought for a moment, "I think we need to tell the town the truth of what happened and look for people who can back up the fact that he was indeed sick."

He then added, "We have the poison and that alone may give us credibility because it's something that could be verified."

---------
I propose to tell the town that Caggan tried to poison us and that when he was brought in for questioning, he turned into a were-boar and attacked us. We then defended ourselves and he ended up dead. We should write that in front of the jailhouse for all to see. I also think we should look for people who can attest to Caggan being a were-boar. GM: what roll do you want for that?

Anarxos examines carefully the advantages and drawbacks of each plan, then glances at Ahreni. "I don't like the lie, but in this case it's what we can do best, as telling the townfolk the truth may only make matters worse if we don't have hard and over-convincing evidence. It's a sound plan, Ahreni, and I endorse it."

"It is a necessary one." Ahreni replies, acknowledging Anarxos' concerns. "In this case I hope our lie will prevent a greater problem, the people reacting against us and possibly the Archbaron retaliating. We were told to keep the peace and this is the best way I can think of to achieve that. Now, to logistics. We'll need a covered cart and a way of proclaiming our message, as well as some manacles and a way of concealing the wounds..."

Basically I propose we get the word out, then bundle Claggan into a covered wagon to drive him away. We may need to hide someone in the cart to give a suitable performance of kicking and pushing to show he'd not going quietly. Then we drive the wagon out of town, deal with the body and return at an appropriate time later.

Pava considers what she's heard so far.

"I think think that Ahreni's plan is the best one--I'm sorry Vicenzo; I just think that claiming self-defense here can only backfire--but Vicenzo does make an important point. We can't scapegoat the Archbaron either. We must be careful how Caggan eventually 'dies' in our telling of it. Perhaps, in a few days or a week, we can uncover some evidence of his nature that would allow us to hew closer to the real truth, but for now, we can't let them think us base murderers."

"I could hide in the wagon; I have the strength to rock it as he would have."

Vicenzo was fine, "That's OK. As long as there is some sort of plan, I'll follow."

He summarized, "So the plan is to make a showing that Caggan is being taken away? And we'll have Pava here wrapped up and struggling?"

He nodded, "Ok, but we still need to let the town know what's going on and start looking for people who knew about Caggan's curse."

As Ahreni leaves the jail disguised as a simple woman, Pava rides Ramael through the north gate in hopes to further improve their ruse. Meanwhile, Melani and Vicenzo guard the jail so Anarxos can look for a covered wagon. It takes him almost three hours to find an appropriate one and, to his luck, the man possessing it isn't tied neither to the Glorious Reclamation rebels nor to the church of Iomedae.

With his silver tongue, Anarxos is able to convince the man to part with his wagon, confiscating it for 'Longacre's safety'.

Pava, after leaving Ramael in the site of Mercellus's death, returns to longacre and soon discovers a fail in their plans: How will she be able to enter the town? Longacre has three gates and they have already closed one of them. The other two were being guarded and no one without a writ of passage were able to get in... Meanwhile, the others wait for her in front of the jail, with everything prepared...

I'm assuming that the gates are on the roads that lead out of town but there isn't a wall surrounding the entire town. If that's the case, then Pava should just go 'between gates' and it wouldn't hurt for her to try a simple disguise. Any ranks in disguise, Pava?
