'As Jothar Fleet-Hand and Arnkel were readying their attack, they noticed Thorfinn and others working at removing the whale meat. They had already hollowed out 20 feet of the whale carcass near the middle. The top of the whale was 15 feet above the surface of the sand, and Thorfinn was working closer to the whale's head.
Suddenly, Jothar and Arnkel heard a battle-cry from the woods to their right. As they looked in that direction, they saw Thorgeir 'Bottle-Back' run out towards the whale's tail. He ran up the entire length of the whale carcass, jumping from rib to rib, and when he reached Thorfinn, he shouted, "I'm returning the axe you let me borrow!" Then he swung the axe which was originally Thorfinn's, dealing him a terrible wound.'

Elaine shakes her head and squints at the man in the back. She can't quite place him, but she knows he must be a colleague from the University. She knows she can trust him, and his offer, so she walks over to stand by him in the courtyard. (double move for my action)
"Thank you for coming, Professor. Are you alright? The girl packs a mean kick."
GM 7thGate |
I-I am fine my dear, let us retreat from the ruffians, follow me! Guards, keep them away from us!
The wizard bounds away from Aella, legs moving in a blur. There is clearly magic enhancing his stride.
Wizard takes a withdraw action to get out of kicking range. Aella and Than, you're up again.

Dav
Wizard
Grumblejack
Aella
Than
All the other guards.
GM 7thGate |
Did Aella want to flurry of blows? She's at +1 to hit and damage from Dav's inspire courage, so you can make two attacks a +2 to hit/+3 to damage if you want. You hit the guard for 4 with the first attack.
GM 7thGate |
Aella gets one good smack in on the guard, prompting a grunt of pain. He stays standing and ready to fight.
Well, two shots are better than 1...most of the time. Still waiting on Than, then we're back to the guards.
GM 7thGate |
Than swings over the guard's head.
The guard in the tower sees Elaine away from combat. He does not realize what has happened to her, and moves over so he can get clear shot.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
GM 7thGate |
Elaine barely manages to get enough out of the way that the arrow deflects off her chain shirt.
You are no longer charmed.
The guard facing Aella has had enough of this. He's been burnt, smashed and blasted with negative energy, and has no interest in staying. He tries to run away from Aella as fast as he can, giving Aella a clear shot as his fleeing back.
Aella's AOO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
The guard near Than does not like his current position surrounded by inmates at all, and steps out towards Aella to try and beat her down to get a clear path.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
GM 7thGate |
Aella misses the fleeing guard, but is able to easily evade the other guard's clumsy swipe.
From the small wooden structure, barking noises start to issue as two large guard dogs run quickly out towards Aella and Elaine. They are followed by a wobbly guard wielding a shield and club like the rest, and Blackerly, the man who branded you all. He is dressed in chain mail and has a longsword out and readied to strike if someone approaches him. He whistles loudly in your general direction.
"Get 'em boy! Take that scum down hard."
Hurray, new round! The guard who got hurt and is running has a red circle surrounding him. Aella and Dav are up, followed by the wizard and Grumblejack.

'I think we're pretty exposed in the courtyard. I'm going to stay in here, and maybe split them up. Like in the epic saga...
Immediately after Thorgeir 'Bottle-Back' killed Thorfinn, he shouted to Jothar and Arnkel, 'Look there!' When Jothar looked along his outstretched arm, he saw sails coming into view. Thorfinn's comrades were returning with their longboats to collect another load of whale meat.
Jothar shouted to Bottle-Back, 'Come down, and help me here!' When Thorgeir jumped down, Jothar was showing Arnkel where to cut the whale's side. Quickly, he explained his plan:
Jothar, Arnkel, and Thorgeir would carve out the whale carcass, and hide inside until Thorfinn's clan cut deep enough to uncover them. Then, acting with speed to take advantage of the surprise, the three of them would be able to defeat a large number of enemies.'
3 rounds remaining. My plan is to use it up, then go back to the storage room and make some kind of large tower shield to protect us from the arrows.
GM 7thGate |
I like this plan.
The wizard curses under his breath before yelling up at the guard as he moves towards Elaine.
"I had her enspelled! Now we're going to have to do this the hard way, you incompetent buffoon!"
The wizard bounds over towards Elaine, keeping as far away from Aella as is practical. He quickly starts chanting a spell and pointing at Elaine, only to be surprised by a quick explosive tossed directly in his face.
Elaine's Readied Bomb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Concentration Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
GM 7thGate |
The wizard is old, and not very good at dodging. Elaine strikes him in the arm despite an off throw, exploding into flames. The wizard manages to continue through the pain, finishing his spell. Two glowing darts of force shoot out at Elaine, striking with bone crushing force.
Damage: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 2 = 6
GM 7thGate |
Elaine feels something important break from the impact.
You're at exactly 0 HP; of you lose any more, you start to bleed to death (you'll die at -10 HP). At 0 HP, you can only take 1 move action per turn. You can choose to take a standard action (like an attack or spell) instead, but you will take 1 point of damage if you do, and fall unconsious and begin to bleed out.
Grumblejack pushes himself up off the ground with a roar.
"THIS IS NOT FUNNY! I WILL RIP OFF YOUR LEGS, TINY MAN!"
Grumblejack stands up, takes a 5 foot step forward and intimidates the guard, since he can't reach him for ripping yet.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
GM 7thGate |
That is one intimidated guard. He's shaken for 2 rounds.
Aella and Than are up! Remember, you've got Dav's inspire courage, so are at +1 to hit and damage on any attack rolls.

Yeah, that map could be better for grid based combat. I'm going to say you can move into or through the square, but only by squeezing. Same with if you wanted to walk around the guard to avoid an AOO by hugging the other side of the door. Squeezing counts as 2 squares of movement per tile, like difficult terrain, and you will take -4 to AC and to hit while squeezing.
GM 7thGate |
Dav Will Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Intimidated Guard Will Save: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (9) - 2 = 7
Dog Will Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Dog Will Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
GM 7thGate |
Dav flinches as he feels Than's channel burn his body. Both of the dogs yelp in pain, and the guard facing Grumblejack flinches from the burn as well.
Dav, you take 1. Both dogs and the guard take 2.
The guard decides that he doesn't really want to have his legs ripped off, and gets out of there as fast as he can. He takes a withdraw action over by Blackerly.
The drunk guard comes over and tries to grab Elaine, giving Aella an opening to strike.
Aella's AOO: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
GM 7thGate |
Guard's Grapple: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (19) - 2 = 17
Both dogs snap at Aella, trying to bite her legs and take her down.
Dog: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Dog: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
GM 7thGate |
Aella dodges both of the dogs, while Elaine is grabbed despite Aella's best effort.
Blackerly moves over in front of the gates, sword ready to stab anyone who gets near him. He berates the guard who fled by him.
"Get back in there! She doesn't even have weapons! I'll keep any of the riff raff from breaking through this way."
Ok, Dav, you're up. Elaine, you can do something too if you want to, but you're too hurt to oppose the grapple effectively (its a standard action to try and escape). Your options are pretty limited at this point, so you might just want to delay.

GM 7thGate |
I just realized the guard would have needed a free hand for that, so he's dropped his club as well. He would have been at an extra -4 for using only one hand, but that still hit Elaine.
Dav Theis |
A 16 on my Will save, and I still take negative energy damage? That's mean...
How far does that Channel Energy reach? I don't have enough HP to withstand too many more of those...
That crazy Concentration check too...
Dav continues the saga. "Jothar, Thorgeir, and Arnkel quickly carved a false side in the whale, using the previous knife-cuts to hide their opening. Jothar was able to see out of a small opening, and he kept watch.
Meanwhile, the other two warriors prepared their surprise attacks. Arnkel picked up part of a whale rib, to use as a throwing weapon. Thorgeir used his fishing experience to cut a large sheet of blubber. He prepared to use it as a large shield. All three of them were covered in whale gore, which they presumed would make quite an impression on their enemies."
2 rounds remaining until retreat. Just hold on!
GM 7thGate |
Channel Energy is a 30 foot burst. Affected targets take half damage on a save. Did you want to back up a bit so you're not as close to Than? I believe your bardic performance range is "able to hear you", so you won't have any trouble inspiring people from further back.
That concentration check was unfortunate for you guys, but at least Elaine stayed conscious and isn't bleeding out.
GM 7thGate |
The wizard bounds backwards, away from the fighting. In the process, he pulls out a potion from his robes and removes its stopper.
Grumblejack howls and charges forward, swinging at the nearest dog with wild abandon.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 1 + 2 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 1 = 10
GM 7thGate |
Grumblejack deals a savage blow the nearest dog, causing it to whimper in pain. Now through the door, he sees the wizard preparing to drink a potion. Grumblejack uncharacteristically flinches; he seems a little frightened after his experience before.
Aella, Than, you're up. Than, you might want to wait until Dav confirms if he wanted to move back out of channeling range. Elaine, I went ahead and skipped you because there isn't a lot you can do in your current situation; I'm assuming you're holding until you have a chance to do something safely, but feel free to jump in if you do want to take an action.
Elaine
Dav
Wizard
Grumblejack
Aella

All the other guards.
GM 7thGate |
Yes they are! There aren't really hard and fast rules on how far away people can hear you, but I assume Dav projects quite well. I wouldn't start worrying until people are fairly far away; if someone runs over by the wizard, I might have them make a perception check to hear you, but everyone won't have any problems getting the bonus from you unless you're way, way in the back.
I forget, did Dav ever pick up a longsword or shield from a dead guard? I don't remember, but it has been a while.
GM 7thGate |
The tables look heavy, but Dav is pretty sure that three or four of you shouldn't have any trouble lifting one if you wanted to. They are wide and tall enough to hide behind completely if tipped on their side.
Aella and Than, you're up still.
GM 7thGate |
Yup! The guard is at -4 to dex, which reflects in his AC. That first roll is a hit. Not going to be mean and have anything happen to Elaine on the natural 1, but it is, of course, a miss. Both of your flurry of blows are actually at the same bonus, Aella; it is kind of strange, but it is based off of if you were a full BAB character, but then with a -2 penalty to all attacks like you're two weapon fighting. That's -1/-1, then +2 for str and +1 for inspire courage for +2 on both attacks right now.
Aella whomps the guard that is grappling Elaine, but he is still holding on.
Than, you're still up.
GM 7thGate |
Than misses the dog with his swing.
The guard grappling Elaine tries to drag her away.
Maintain 1-handed Grapple: 1d20 + 4 + 5 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 5 - 4 - 2 = 4
The dog sliced open by Grumblejack gives off a high pitched whine and runs for the kennel. It takes a withdraw action.
The severely injured guard moves around the corner of the building, out of combat.
The dog in front of Aella takes a bite at her leg, trying to drag her to the ground as it is trained to do.
Dog Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
The guard scared off by Grumblejack moves next to Blackerly and takes a defensive posture.
"I'm not going near that Ogre! Look what it just did to the dog!"
GM 7thGate |
The drunk guard loses his grip on Elaine, and looking at Aella, moves to put the dog between him and her fists.
The dog snaps at Aella's leg, but she pulls it out of the way in plenty of time.
Blackerly moves over slightly, keeping his sword up and ready to strike anyone who approaches.
"Mathias, stop playing around! Cast to kill on the damn ogre at least or this whole fight is going to go straight to hell."
The guard on the rooftop has an arrow knocked, ready to fire if someone gives him a clear shot.
Elaine, Dav, you're both up. Elaine, if you try and move out of your square with a move action, you'll take an attack of opportunity from the dog. If you don't move with your action, you can move 1 square with a 5 ft step without taking an Attack of Opportunity from the dog.

Dav Theis |
Whew! That fumble on the grapple is great! And dodging that dog's attack is good luck too.
I'm glad I'm not in range of that arrow. In a few more rounds, I'll see if I can make some sort of defense against him. Be careful until then!
Dav continues his saga, his words echoing deeply through the stone hallway. 'As the opposing whalers approached the carcass, they were unaware that Jothar and his friends were inside, waiting to attack. Suddenly, the lead man stopped, with a puzzled look on his face. He looked around, and called the next man over.
Jothar asked Thorgeir, "What are they saying?" After thinking for a moment, Thorgeir replied, "I think they're wondering why Thorfinn isn't around..."
The whalers looked around, and called for Thorfinn. When he obviously did not respond, they approached the whale with more caution.
Jothar said, "They suspect something, but no one will suspect the ambush we have prepared. Let them search and find nothing. Once they relax, we will strike!"'
1 round left. I'm not going to enter the room with the tables, because I think the sound wouldn't bounce right.
I just realized that I could have cast Resistance. Do Zero-level spells need to be prepared? Or can I cast as many as I want per day?
GM 7thGate |
You can cast as many 0th level spells as you want per day. Resistance has a material component though, which is in the spell component pouch. Looking back through the posts, I don't think anyone ever took it off the veil; Than asked for it, but it looks like you only ever pulled off the holy symbols for him. You were interrupted by the guard before getting to the pouch way back in the cell, so it is still on the veil.
The veil is currently tied to the handle on the Alchemist's box in Elaine's possession, I believe. It has been a while since anyone has used it.
