Water laps steadily at the pier as sailors, laborers, and merchants rush busily around Absalom’s port. The venture-captain’s summons called for a meeting aboard the Sixwing Drake, a sleek sailing ship. The Drake’s captain, a Varisian woman and fellow Pathfinder named Zarah Zendrani, stands at the helm of her vessel. “It’s not like Valsin to be late,” she mutters, furrowing her brow. As if on cue, a tall and meticulously groomed man pushes his way through the crowd and up the gangplank, cursing audibly. “Whoever supervises this mess of a port needs to be dumped in the sea!” he grumbles. The tall man looks around at those gathered before him. “Just the group I requested. Perfect. I’m Venture- Captain Ambrus Valsin, and I took great care in selecting just the right Pathfinders for this assignment.” Valsin reaches into his belt pouch and withdraws a small, folded paper before continuing. “A few days ago, I received a curious note from a rather unexpected source. It’s not every day that I get a request from an agent of the Aspis Consortium.” Captain Zendrani’s eyes widen, and Valsin smiles knowingly. “But Magali Delroya does not appear to be your typical Aspis agent. As you surely know, the Aspis Consortium pursues a variety of activities across the Inner Sea that the Pathfinder Society finds abhorrent. It seems that Delroya has been working with them for some time, but can no longer stomach the snakes herself. She wants to stop a shipment of an experimental drug from leaving Diobel later this week. It’s bound for a number of locations across the Inner Sea region. According to Delroya, she can’t ask the local authorities for help, because the Aspis Consortium has already struck a deal with a faction of the Kortos Consortium, a powerful merchant collective. Her hands are tied, so she’s come to us for help. In this note, she outlines three different tasks that would help to disrupt the Aspis long enough for her to move the shipment to a secure location, out of the clutches of the consortium. Once you accomplish two of these tasks, she’s willing to meet with you, but not before.”

“Normally, I wouldn’t trust an Aspis agent at any hour of the day. But our sources in Diobel have confirmed the Aspis and Kortos consortia’s activities. Everything checks out, so we are presented with a unique opportunity. If we help Delroya, we might not only strike a financial blow against the Aspis Consortium, but we could also reveal their dealings with the Kortos Consortium—and possibly prevent their arrangement from turning into a more formal alliance. Furthermore, we hope to stop this drug from spreading across the Inner Sea region, and if we—if all of you—do a good enough job, we might even convince Delroya to join the Society. A turncoat agent would be a valuable asset in our ongoing run-ins with the Aspis Consortium.”

“Take some time to look over Delroya’s note and the tasks she has set for you. If you have any questions, now is the time to ask. Remember, the Aspis Consortium is a long-time enemy of the society, but the Kortos Consortium, while certainly suspicious, is not our enemy. It is a complex organization with many factions, and we should avoid antagonizing any of them, except when necessary to oppose the Aspis Consortium.”

There is no formal alliance between the Kortos Consortium and Aspis Consortium, and the two groups are likely working together in a limited capacity—at least for the time being.

DC 15 K. Local:
Although the Aspis Consortium seems to have an agreement with part of the Kortos Consortium, neither group is centralized enough for such an arrangement to be very stable. Causing a major disruption in their operation would very likely sever ties between the two groups.

DC 20 K. Local:
House Locosta, the faction allied with the Aspis Consortium, claims that its major interest is in Qadiran spices, but the family derives most of its profit from buying and selling Qadiran slaves

Kai is Tian-Shu, so Lin is his family name, Kai is his name.

Kai stands of typical height like most Tian-Shus, with typical dark brown eyes, and silky black hair that he cuts short and leaves largely ungroomed. What differentiates him though is his build - while most Tians are lean and lithe, Kai is well-built and muscular, clearly visible through the chain shirt he is wearing. He holds a longspear comfortably in one hand, and is also equipped with a morningstar and some javelins. Across his chest is a bandolier where some vials of liquid are stored.

Kai's brows furrow as he goes deep into thought, before he speaks up. "The politics of this region are somewhat complex. While there is no formal alliance between the Kortos Consortium and Aspis Consortium, but they are likely to work together on common interest. However, much they have some form of agreement, neither group are centralized enough for such an arrangement to be very stable. If we can cause a major disruption in their operations, it would very likely sever ties between the two groups. Interestingly, House Locosta, the faction allied with the Aspis Consortium, claims that its major interest is in Qadiran spices, but the family derives most of its profit from the unsavory practice of buying and selling Qadiran slaves."

Turning to the Venture-Captain, Kai queries, "I am glad that this Delroya has seen the error of her ways and is willing to turn over a new leaf. I am also all for disrupting this horrid drug trade. What assurances do we have, however, that this is not a trick by the Aspis Consortium? That we can trust her?"

Conal listens to the Valsin's words. He nods in acknowledgement of Kai's insight into the situation.

Perhaps the enemy of my enemy is my friend? Maybe the Kortos isn't privy to the Aspis' drug business. We could use that. And as for trusting the double agent, do we have a choice? Conal says as he gets up to stretch his legs, his wicked blade clanging on the chair as he rises.

Well, I am ready to set out. Do we have any contacts when we get there?

Ambrus nods to Kai. "Fair question. However, I met Magali several years ago, when she was barely a grown woman. It must have been just before she joined the Aspis Consortium. She’s a wanderer, never comfortable in one place for long. I saw great potential in her as a Pathfinder, but she always preferred to work alone and felt that the society was a poor fit. Had I known that she would wind up with the Aspis Consortium, I would have put more effort into recruiting her. As it is, she may be a loner and a wanderer, but she is not evil. I imagine that it took this long to see the truth of the Aspis Consotium, and now that she knows the truth, she wants out. If you can recruit her as a Pathfinder, all the better.”

Turning to Conal, he continues. "She is not an enemy, and I imagine that once we have proven ourselves to her, she will make herself known. When we reach Diobel, you will be under a deadline to get everything finished in time to stop this drug shipment, but other than that, the Drake will wait until your mission is complete and return you to Absalom. So until she chooses to reveal herself, this ship and I will be your only contacts."

The large female tengu holding the deck rail is unusual looking, even for her race. She appears nonchalant, but she is keenly aware of anyone staring at her. Anyone looking closely can see a three-eyed jackal sewn onto the inside of her cloak.

"But all these tasks sound most suited to Pathfinders who specialize in subtlety. Why would we be chosen?" she asks as she looks around at the heavily armed and armored group.

"Oh well. I'm sure you have your reasons." She addresses the rest of the group. "So which tasks shall we undertake? It sounds like the sewers might be the easiest place to avoid detection and collateral damage."

Dressed in top hat and tails, Tinker Boneshaker listened to the Venture Captain brief the group. With them heading into the sewer, he thought a bit. "Are there any that can not see in the darkness? he asked "I can but my creaking and popping bones makes me not as quiet as others of my race."

Kai chuckles to himself. In a slow measured tone, Kai responds, "Tinker, seems that we are opposites here. I have some minor talent in moving quietly when the occasion calls for it, but am completely blind in the dark. If any of you could cast a simple light cantrip for Conal or myself, that would be fantastic. Although the two of us would likely have to stay further back if any sneaking around in the dark is called for."

Turning back to Ambrus, Kai replies, "If Saranrae has granted her the wisdom to see the errors of her ways, that certainly we should endeavor to support her, and perhaps even recruit her to our worthy Society. As for the Kortos Consortium, I trust that the Society would rather we not offend them? Certainly having a network with such an extensive organisation with influences so near Absalom can only be to our advantage."

Seeing Avenging Flame pull out his wayfinder, Kai recall something. He digs his hand deep into his backpack and pulls out a similar looking wayfinder as well. "My, I've completely forgotten I had that. It was been way down there under all my gear every since I received it after the expedition to the Kortos mountains."

After a day and night at sea, Captain Zendrani and the crew of the sleek Sixwing Drake steer the ship up to the massive barrier of broken war-barges, crumbling walls, and jetties of iron and wood that protect the port of Diobel just after the sun peeks above the horizon. “Well, here we are,” says the captain. “I’ll make sure everything is in order with Diobel’s inspectors and charter you a barge to the port. You aren’t carrying anything particularly valuable, so you shouldn’t draw much attention from the inspectors or pilots, so long as you don’t run your mouth. My crew and I will wait here with the ship. You can return here to rest, if you need to, but remember—there isn’t much time!”

Pulling out a black, silver tipped wand, he showed it to the others. "If I happen to go down, please use this wand rather than your own."

"That depends upon the faction that you are dealing with. The Kortos Consortium is not singular, therefore you should use caution if you care going to involve the authorities in any way. Officially, we have no relation, and some of their factions are involved in less than savory operations. However, should the need arise, do what you think is best."

As the Venture Captain finishes speaking, a barge comes alongside, and a port inspector and the barge captain board and has a conversation with the Captain. You see some gold exchange hands, before the Captain waves you over. "I've arranged for the barge to take you into the docks. We will remain here. Should you need to return, the barge will be waiting for you. I have made sure that the captain will await your return. We will be leaving tomorrow night."

The barge trip is a quiet one, the captain curtly refusing all conversation, and you are deposited on the docks safe and sound.

Delroya’s directions lead to an isolated alley in the Bristles, and then down into the sewers beneath Diobel. The stench of sewage mixes with the sharper odors of chemical fumes and decay and permeates the damp tunnels. From this intersection, tunnels lead west and south into the darkness. A third tunnel heading east is filled with detritus, filthy beddings, food scraps, broken glass, and rotting furniture. An alcove lies beyond a collapsed portion of the tunnel’s southern wall, and further east, a statue of a giant rat rests in the dead-end passage. Countless empty flasks and discarded alchemical ingredients lie on the floor around the statue. On a nearby workbench sit several organized but empty flasks and jars.

There are four people down here, obviously malnourished and very much under the effects of some powerful substance. They hardly notice you, and react in no way to you as you enter the tunnels.

Kai cautiously paces down the side of the sewer towards the nearest man, peering around for any possible traps or anything unusual.

When he reaches the man, he crouches besides him. Pulling out from his backpack some of his rations, he tenderly offers it to the man while holding out his waterskin at the same time. "Here, you look famished. What happened? Why are you down here in the sewers?"

The team spreads out through the area, searching for some clue of illicit activities. Conal, Torga and Avenging flame wade through the chemical infested waters to get to the other side. as they do, the water burns at their skin.

As you try to engage the individuals, they barely recognise you as fellow humans and stare listlessly around the tunnels until you come close. "Water.. Please.." they beg as you come within reach, grasping for any skins hanging from your belts. Kai moves further down the tunnel, but only sees the statue and workbench at the dead end, as he administers water to the man nearest him. He grasps at the skin weakly, drinking all Kai has to offer.

DC 18 K. Religion:
The statue of the rat depicts Hanspur, a lesser-known deity of waterways and smugglers.

While checking on the two subjects near the cave in hole, Avenging flame notices a small vial of liquid secreted within the pallet under one of the victims.

DC 14 Craft Alchemy or DC 18 Perception:
This vial is most likely a small sample of the drug that you were sent here to find.

As the party moves about, though, it seems one thing is disturbed by your presence: A beetle the size of a housecat and glowing with some red luminescence crawls out of the pipe near the alter and hisses angrily.
