Vic moves 15 feet away from the Orcs.

Appreciate your patience. I've got a full plate since returning from abroad, but promise I'll get the game going again before the end of the week.

The Exchange

We lost Sand/F.Castor last night due to real life pressures of medical training. A small body blow for me. In fact, the start has not been what I hoped for in terms of energy and frequency of postings so let's consider whether this is worth continuing? Personally I do not look forward to seeing what everyone's written when I get in. That is pretty damning but what do you four think and feel, if its the same way then I suggest we call it?

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

I'm enjoying myself, although I wish things were moving along a bit faster. I do feel like we've been a bit hesitant at times while waiting for more info from you, while you've been waiting for us to do something you can react to. But I think that will clear up with time. My vote is to continue.

The Exchange

That is a fair point.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

I concur with Aerik. I am prepared to move forward if everyone else is also.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Aerik summed it up nicely.

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

Hi all. I apologize for my role in the games sluggish start. I'm back now, and really excited to get things rolling.

Sadarr seeing a target now, follows in the footsteps of his comrades, moving carefully, and taking cover, and / or concealment as he can, but following in their footsteps to avoid the traps, moves to engage.

The Exchange

I am pleased that you all want to give this a fair shout. Lets try to give it more effort then. Eisen I am going to move things along a little.

Eisen looks around on the cart and sees an orc sneaking up from behind a large fold of grass about fifty feet away. He is pulling out a javelin.

I have delayed Eisen so he gets a go now. Then the rest of the orcs (which he cannot now see) are able to act against the rest of the party.

The Exchange

Sand grips the hand of Aerik to help take that healing inside. Its like a grip of life and the elf visibly straightens at the end.

Then he moves up level with Vic and starts a series of arcane syllables and gestures finishing with his right hand glowing furnace red. The hot flames detonate and shoot out towards an orc archer.

firebolt 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16, damage 1d10 ⇒ 9

Much to the horror of Jarsk, his fellow orc explodes through his chest and drops like a stone, falling flat on his face.

1 archer and 2 with javelins on the rise all about to act before Vic, Aerik and Sand while Eisen has at least one of his own.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Eisen takes cover from the Orc and waits for it to move within range.

"There's one coming this way!" He shouts to the merchants urging them to take cover themselves.

Didn't realize it was my go again. My bad.

The Exchange

Round Three

Eisen sees the orc with a spear and shield creeping round the back wagon and slinking down the side. He doesn't notice any others coming. It has a black wolf face on its wooden boss and Eisen can hear it. Soon it will reach him.
..

The second archer shoots back at Sand trembling a bit from the charred flesh next to him. Meanwhile the other orcs only have one javelin each left so they are flung forwards, one at Vic. One at Aerik.

Jarsk the archer 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22, damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6, first javelin at Aerik 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24, 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 3) + 2 = 10, second javelin at Vic 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

The arrow hits Sand hard and he topples sideways just as the javelin targets Aerik. Vic dodges nimbly.

EDIT: lets leave it at 9 points of damage to Aerik. Rerolling more is a touch unfair but thanks Eisen for the spot.

The Exchange

Over to you guys. Hope your rolling matches mine.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Javelin's are D6's.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Vic fires an arrow at the Orc who threw the javelin at him.

SB Att: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
SB dam: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

Stuck with two javelins now, Aerik slumps to the ground unconscious.

I'm at 0 hit points (really -5, but that doesn't appear to matter per the new rules.)

Death save: 1d20 ⇒ 8

That's one failure. Two more and I'm toast.

The Exchange

End of Round Three
Aerik feels a surge of healing energy through his body. Not much but maybe enough to make a difference.Healing word on Aerik 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

A dagger spins end over end past Vic and towards the same orc. The creature slumps before him.

Dagger throw 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15, damage 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Looking down, Vic catches a glint of blue on the blade of his new dagger. The three merchants are gathered behind the party, they have obviously heard too much from the orcs and seen how things fare.

Malin charges forwards to help his new found friend, Aerik. He slips and disappears in a horse pit with an oooff!

Round Four

Eisen to act

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

@ GM FW: Which dagger has the glint of blue on the blade? Mine, or the one that was just embedded in the nearby Orc? Also, how many Orcs remain standing, that we can see at this moment?

The Exchange

Vic was given a dwarven silver dagger at the Greatwall gates, remember now? There are two orcs left on the rise, one with no javelins and one who is deadly with a bow and called Jarsk.

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

I'm not sure where Sadarr is in all this scrum. He was headed forward, keeping down, and avoiding the traps. Where does he fit in?

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Eisen tosses a javelin of his own at the creeping Orc, but fails to connect with this one.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Got it...thanks!

The Exchange

Sadarr is halfway across the field near to Aerik and Sand. He can see that there are traps which means he is a double move (or thirty feet of difficult terrain) away from the orcs remaining on the rise.

Sadarr to act then its the orcs.

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

Round 3

Sadarr moves 10' drawing his spear as he goes, and heaves it at the accurate archer.

"This situation has caused my ire to spike". "Hopefully heaving my heavy projectile at that unworthy will effect his deadly aim"?

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 Spear Throw

1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Piercing Damage

Just in case Sadarr is not in normal range. 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 Disadvantage.

He then continues his move towards the enemy.

The Exchange

That was Round Three actions for Sadarr. Just. He goes last. I'll check the range on spear when I get home from work.

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

It's in his profile... (20/60)

The Exchange

Thanks scranford

The archer easily dodges that long throw and the spear lands just where he was stood.

Round Four

Eisen's enemy appears from round the wagon, led by the meaty smell of sweat and blood. It is a brute of an orc and wields a large club. The orc smashes the wooden head down on Eisen. It is studded with white pearly teeth.

Greatclub 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8, damage 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Swish the club dents the dry ground.

Then the archer, Jarsk, shoots back at Sadarr, aiming for his wide chest. The long black fletched arrow spins as it whirrs towards its target. After that, the creature weighs up the odds and disappears back and away down the slope. Out of sight.

Orc archer 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19, damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

The other one, wounded by Vic, comes down the slope and swings a short sword at the scout.

Wounded Orc 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17, damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

The Exchange

Round Four

Everyone is up. Sand (round 3) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7, Sand (round 4) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

Sadarr grunts in dismay as his long throw is evaded by the murderous orc... which turns into a grunt of pain as the deadly archer once again makes his arrow count. The force of the blow nearly turns the Dragonborn in a full circle, as he glanced down at the 4" of arrow and fletching blooming from his chest. He drops to one knee in the pain. With a grimace he grasps the arrow, and prepares to pull it out, then remembers that this might cause more damage.

"I pray that this is not what you have in store for your humble servent". Sadarr mumbles under his breath, as he lets the healing grace of Istus flow into the wound. "Pulling this out will have to wait for later". He grumbles as he rises back to his feet.

Using "Lay on Hands" to heal 5 HP of damage bring Sadarr back to 6 HP and more caution.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Vic takes the blow from the Orc and falls unconscious.

Death Save: 1d20 ⇒ 1

That counts as 2 failures.

I am not complaining about this because my PC may die, but I find it extremely difficult to engage in combat strategically, especially when my PC uses movement to its advantage, without a map or detailed description of positioning. I knew that I only had 1 HP left, and my PC certainly would have hidden or protected itself from further injury. There is no way that i would have allowed an Orc that close with an 80' range on the bow.

The Exchange

I understand what you mean Vic. As I mentioned at the beginning, I have the time or inclination to use maps. That's why I've tried to give detailed descriptions of the terrain. The traps indicate that there is an opportunity to hide as well so I'd just seize it next time. Plus if you say I am stealthing or hiding behind a large clump of grass, I'd be giving everyone the benefit of the doubt and allow that. But its difficult to retcon this now with that death save.

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

"The worms! By all the gods, the worms!" Aerik sits up, gasping. Surprised to be conscious, he looks around in confusion for a moment before noticing the orc standing over Vic's body.

Roaring, he leaps to his feat and draws his longsword, bringing it around in a savage blow aimed for the orc's neck.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 201d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

He then turns his attention to Vic, whose blood spurts from the deep wound.

"Ice-Breather - unless you have skill treating wounds, go see if friend Eisen needs help causing some," Aerik says to Sadarr. "Kord will see to our friend here."

Assuming he isn't interrupted and nothing else happens, Aerik will prepare to cast cure wounds on Vic the next round.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Eisen matches the Orc's wide swing with one of his own. "I'm going to make you pay for what you've done!" He shouts.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Likely my fault as well. I knew well enough about the lack of maps going in. I should have simply asked for greater detail on the distances between us and the enemy.

The Exchange

End of Round Four

Malin drags his way out of a pit, swearing in a manly fashion to hide his stupidity. He has several scrapes and welts across his skin.

Emerald starts to pick her way towards Vic and Aerik.

healing word on Vic 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

The Exchange

Round Five

There is a moment's silence on the battlefield. As Vic's eyes flicker open he can breathe again.

Sand death save 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20, 1 fail and 2 successes

Back at the Wagons

The brute swings his club in a horizontally across the body, roaring "Durze get you dead."

Greatclub 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

A wooden board in the side of Jasmalus' wagon shatters at the impact as he ducks and out from inside the hole a cascade of gold coins trickles down to Eisen's feet.

"Ooh! Durze rich too."

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Whew...close call.

The Exchange

Note that the majority of the party are a round of movement from the wagons, if they "cut the corner" to get back quicker. Eisen stay frosty.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Eisen uses HM 4: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
It's not very effective...: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Eisen launces another attack at the Orc. "Please stop talking it's painful to listen to."

The Exchange

The rest of you are free to act.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Round 5, Sneak Attack

Vic move halfway towards the wagons, flanking out to the side and fires at the orc engaged with Eisen.

SB Att: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
SB Dam: 1d6 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 2 + (2) = 7

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

If I'm tracking everything correctly, all of the orcs that were on the slope above us are dead, other than Larsk, who fled. Let me know if that's not the case.

Seeing Vic rise and head to Eisen's aid, Aerik turns his attention instead to Sand.

"If I heal you again, you've got to do a better job of dodging them arrows - I can't plug holes all day," he says as he lays his left hand on the elf and calls for Kord's blessing.

Cure Wounds: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Seeing the elf's wounds close, Aerik rises and begins making his way past the traps in pursuit of the orc archer. A move should get me halfway to the orcs' previous position.

The Exchange

Sand opens his eyes bewildered by the see-saw actions of his body. He smiles and nods at Aerik in agreement. The arrows have sliced open large wounds but the healing magic has done the trick. He slowly rises as the priest heads off.

I agree with you, Aerik. No orc threats and your position is noted. Sadarr to go now.

On the rise ahead, an orc is still moving or at least he is coughing up blood and grunting in the final throes.

Vic pops up briefly from behind the rolling rise and sees the three wagons. His arrow speeds into the middle of the orc's back but it turns slightly at the last moment and the arrow skims one arm. It is a brute, large and powerful and now it howls in anger.

I am out playing Rise of the Runelord's tonight with my reincarnated cleric so let's see what Sadarr does before I post the big orc's attack on Eisen.

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

Sadarr pull forth his mighty longbow, and looks for a suitable target.

[ooc]Sadarr I believe is about halfway between enemies, so he will shoot at whichever one offers the best shot.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 Longbow

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 Piercing Damage.

He then looks for somewhere to take cover from the accurate archer over the hill.

The Exchange

Sadarr cannot see an orc at the moment. However he can move and shoot with Vic at the one that is fighting Eisen back at the wagons.

Another arrow slices through the air and takes out the orc menacing Eisen. It spins and falls down.

The fight is pretty much over now. That accurate archer will be out of sight by the time Aerik gets eyes over the brow. But you can try to track him. Meanwhile there is one dying orc left near Aerik and everyone gets to level up!

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

hp: 1d10 ⇒ 9

After making sure the Orc was truly dead and cleaning his blade, Eisen turns to the merchants. "Everyone alright?"

The Exchange

Jasmalus and Malin return quickly, while Emerald helps pick over the corpses of the five orcs.

Not seeing the wounds Malin comes up to Eisen and claps a large pawlike hand on his shoulder, "Yes, everyone is alive. Well done. That's a biggie you slotted there. One got away."

Meanwhile Jasmalus sees the fallen gold and scoops those coins up, swearing. "You didn't see my stash, did you Eisen?" He looks serious, does the older man.

Eisen can make an Insight check.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Insight: 1d20 ⇒ 17

The Exchange

Eisen

Spoiler:
Jasmalus is hiding something. He is pretty good at it but his eyes are just a little too tense.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Eisen gives the pair a stern look." You shouldn't hide things from the people who are protecting you."
