Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Eisen jumps off the wagon and joins the others in searching the area for clues.

With a furrowed brow he asks. "Who would do something this senseless?"

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

I'll be AFK the next two days. Please DMPC as needed.

Male High Elf Wizard (Bladesinger) 2; AC 13 (unarmored; 16 with mage armor); HP 13/13; Str +1, Dex +3, Con +2, Int +6, Wis +4, Cha +2 (advantage vs. charm); Init +3; Darkvision 60 ft., Perception +4 (Passive 14), Insight +4 (Passive 14)

Though tempted to join them, Isandril nevertheless lets the others examine the ruined wagons a little more closely while he remains with the merchants they have been tasked to protect. His eyes scan his surroundings as his hands stray a little closer to his twin scimitars. Unfortunately, what can only be called senseless destruction distracts him, his attention more on what remains of the caravan rather than any approaching danger.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

The Exchange

Eisen can quite quickly work out that the wagons have most of their belongings as first thought. The wagons are empty now.

Aerik notices there are tracks heading away from the trail between two hills. Something strange like the tips of two sticks can be just made out. At this distance they are like a pair of arms.

Sadarr stays with Sand and Jasmalus.

The Exchange

I am moving this week but I'll try to keep posting. Maybe a touch sparse though.

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

"What in the hell do you make of that," Aerik says, pointing out the strange arm-like, stick-like objects. "This whole thing has the look of ruse, to me. Even the foul things that fight for the Old One wouldn't smash a caravan and leave its contents to rot, unless they had some trick in mind. Best ready yourself before we poke around anymore."

Once he's got someone to watch his back, Aerik will ready his spear and shield and advance along the trail for a better look.

The Exchange

By the burnt wagon

Sadarr listens and eventually follows the others to look at the scattered scene with Eisen. He first checks with Jasmalus and obtains a nod, the merchant doesn't seem bothered at the moment. In fact, he gets down and trudges over behind the wyrmkin, his clothes flopping around.

Over the Hill

As Aerik points out the strange arms, going closer slowly reveals that the tops form part of a cross, there are more behind, six in all and what looked like arms were indeed arms. The arms of six men held against their own crucifix. Heads are down and each has a burnt patch of grass around their blackened feet.

Beyond the crosses, the wind blows through the thick and high grass, towards Aerik, bringing the faint smell of cooked pork or something equally fleshy.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Vic advances with Aerik, bow drawn. Upon seeing the grim scene, Vic spits.

"That is no way to go, my friend. Allow me to sneak forward a little further to see what is cooking. I can only hope it is not flesh."

Vic crouches low and advances further to see if he can see anything of the camp from which the smell has come.

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

Fury shows in Aerik's eyes but he keeps voice low and passionless.

"There'll be a blood debt to pay for this," he says. "But for now, we ought to bury these poor souls. We can track down their killers later."

He'll wait for Vic to return then look for some soft ground to begin digging.

The Exchange

Malin calls over from the wagons to Jasmalus, "look we have to get to a good place for camping. This is not it!" Jasmalus waves him down and the large man jumps down and heads towards the older man.

Aerik can find a large dry riverbed, many cracks and signs of crumbling dryness show just how hard the land is. With effort and man power, shallow graves may take several hours. Only.

Vic gets to see the way they have been treated close up. Its not pretty and he has never seen savage torture, burnt feet and legs, heated wounds and broken bones. These men all died long and in great agony. One big burly middle-aged man in particular has a deep and poisoned jagged hole in his back.

There are tracks and the odd piece of ragged leather of the murderous orcs responsible. They headed away towards the north. Numbers are hard to get, there could be a dozen or more, but when they head away, the tracks blend into the rest of the grassy and dusty ground.

Sadarr comes up behind Aerik and grunts at the sight of so much death.

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

It is indeed unfortunate that these sentient beings had their mortal coils unwound so savagely". "I feel an uncommon urging to avenge their untimely deaths".

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 Knowledge: Religion
To determine what gods they worshiped, and how the bodies should be taken care of.

"Do any of you possess the ability to determine the amount of time that has elapsed since this heinous act occurred"? "Perhaps now is the time to avenge the deaths of these poor souls, and to hopefully circumvent any repetition of this baseless crime".

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Vic looks at Sadaar.

The tracks head off in that direction, but they soon meld into the surroundings. There are many of them.

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

"A pyre will have to serve, as much as I hate to burn a man who was tortured with fire before he died," Aerik says, his fury giving way to a weary sadness. "We have a task, and at present it doesn't involve chasing murdering orcs away from the trail."

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

"So much for proving these roads to be safe." Eisen sighs.

Male Male Dragonborn Paladin (Venegance); AC: 17, Unarmored: 10; HP: 20; INIT +0 Saves: STR +2, DEX +0, CON +0, INT+1, WIS+1, CHA+4; Advantage Charisma,Wisdom: -1; Perc: +4 (Passive 9); Paladin / 1

"I can see the presence of these tracks, once you point them out to me... my question is can you determine the approximate time that these were made"?

"I can do little for the dead, but avenge them". "I choose to keep this from happening to others, and as long as the culprits are at large, that possibility exists".

'That, I cannot tell, friend. We probably should be moving on though, eh?"

The Exchange

Jasmalus checks over the man with a dagger thrust carefully. He gently eases that body onto the pyre. "He has been poisoned by a dagger. Probably a Scarlet Brotherhood kris blade. I saw one once in a drawing. Deadly."

As Aerik gets ready to torch the pile, Vic notices a garish and mishapen head pop out of the grass ahead. It is an orc with one large eye blinks and waters. The figure runs back into cover, disappearing quickly.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Vic quickly drwas an arrow and smoothly fires into the brush at the last place he saw the Orc.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

You don't double the mod on a crit just the dice.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 3

"I don't see it, where did it go?" Eisen asks rushing up to Victor before scanning the area.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

"Come back to inspect their handiwork, have they? Kord may give a chance to mete out some justice after all," Aerik says, grabbing up his spear and shield and going after the orc Vic shot at.

"My instincts warned me that this encounter has not reached it's inevitable conclusion".

Sadarr moves after Aerik, drawing his massive greatsword as he goes.

"What is going on?"

The question is asked by Isandril. The elf, having seen the rest of his companions draw weapons and Victor even firing an arrow at someone, wasted no time and quickly approached, his twin scimitars already in his hands.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Exact same Perception roll. And they say elves are sharp-eyed... :-P

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Vic points to the location where the arrow flew as he draws another and circles around for a better angle to route out the enemy.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

"Right there, Isandril, where my arrow flew, an Orc showed his face for a moment. I do not know if I hit him or not. Let's flush him out!"

The Exchange

No one sees what happens at the end of the arrowfire. But there is a cry at just the right moment. Can't really argue with a 20!

The wind blows across the tall grass ahead. Nothing else appears straight away. Isandril is looking in the wrong direction! He cannot see exactly where the arrow went or where Vic is pointing unfortunately. Those piercing eyes are not on target.

So begins my busy move weekend, but I'll try to keep up with this game.

Sadarr dashes towards the targeted area.

I've got a big week long trip to the UK coming up next week / weekend, and probably won't be able to post much.

The Exchange

I'll give you today to make any quick action like Sadarr and then post the results.

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

Aerik will continue toward the orc Vic shot with a ready spear, which he will throw at any enemy that comes into sight.

After a few brief moments of confusion as he appears to be looking the other way, Sand finally gets his bearings and, swords in hands, follows those advancing towards the place the supposed orc was but a minute or two ago.

The Exchange

Apologies for the lack of a post yesterday, I got hit by a nasty series of emails about the last home from my old landlord. Got to see why he is so wealthy..but its hopefully all sorted and we can get our full deposit back.

Sadarr breasts the rise and looks down beyond the tall grass down a slope and then up sixty feet further away to the next soft crest. The grass is both tall and short in places. There is a path of sorts through and up the far side where the grass has been pushed aside. The breeze blows a foul sweaty smell to match the orc that has already limped and fled to the top of that crest. It is waving its arms as it faces away. A wooden shield is strapped across his back with a bloody red blade on black.

Sand reaches Sadarr as Aerik does too.

The orc is sixty feet away and making a big show. Over to you guys.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

Vic moves forward with the others and fires another arrow at the retreating orc.

Aerik runs 30 feet closer to the orc, then flings his spear at its back.

Attacking with disadvantage due to long range.

The orc tumbles forwards out of sight, another arrow sprouting from its back. Seconds later there is a growing growl from beyond. Several voices rising in anger.

Eisen is up. He hasn't posted for a few days and I did say I would warn people if they didn't let me know. Its up to him now but tomorrow it will be up to me.

Finally spotting the injured Orc, Eisen quickly palms a javelin and takes aim.

"Foul Orc, you're going to pay for these atrocities."

The Exchange

The orc stops moving, pierced by Eisen's long range javelin. The haft looks like a bare flagpole.

That dull roar ends and what may have been several guttural voices changes to a faint whistling breeze. Maybe the creatures have gone.

Thanks Eisen, keep it up please. Over to you guys. In no particular order.

Vic rushes (Dashes) to the fallen orc. he peers intently into the area where the voices hailed from, and tries to discern the whereabouts of the others by sound or tracks on the ground.

More haste, less...

As Vic heads down the slope and almost trips on a hidden rope, but as he rights himself the ground nearby erupts and a net flashes over the rogue, trapping him to the grass as Vic rolls to a stop.

Next!

Male High Elf Wizard (Bladesinger) 2; AC 13 (unarmored; 16 with mage armor); HP 13/13; Str +1, Dex +3, Con +2, Int +6, Wis +4, Cha +2 (advantage vs. charm); Init +3; Darkvision 60 ft., Perception +4 (Passive 14), Insight +4 (Passive 14)

Although Isandril wastes no time to come to the thief's aid after seeing him trapped, he does not do so without at least a modicum of care. He knows that Victor should not be left alone for long, but also acknowledges that suffering the same fate will be of no help to his companion-at-arms.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

The Exchange

Sand's wariness pays gold, much work has gone into the number of nets, pits and legbreaker holes those devious orcs have riddled the ground with.

Sadarr follows behind the horseman.

Good roll. Treat the sixty feet of open ground as difficult, so it will take everyone two rounds to cross with a thirty foot move. For simplicity the horse being careful reduces its movement to the same rate.

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

Aerik starts picking his way toward Vic, scanning the ground for more orcish traps or attackers while he holds his (still unthrown?) spear at the ready.

The Exchange

Round One

Aerik sees a path through, following the original orc to zig zag halfway across between two long pits, made to take horses with ease. With a javelin held high, he leaves Eisen.

Behind Jasmalus and the other two merchants are waiting by the human crosses. They stand uncertain and the leader calls forwards to Eisen, "what is happening, Eisen? Do you need us to leave the carts?"

The Exchange

Eisen then the orcs act.

Half-Giant Soulknife (Cutthroat)

"Nothing we can't handle, just keep cover from that direction until we're finished." Eisen responds.

Eisen remains with the carts guarding them from a flank.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 4

The Exchange

Round Two - Orcs

As Eisen looks around from the three wagons, he does not notice anything amiss. No orcs creeping up from behind at all.

DM Roll

Spoiler:
Stealth 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

With Sand riding through the high grass and precarious traps, he and Sadarr get to Vic twisted in his net. Aerik takes a different route and parallels the pair.

Then orcs run up to the brow not thirty feet ahead, but the four that reach the top, two have longbows and two javelins.

Orcish words come from one of the archers, "get the rider, Jarsk." With that both archers aim at Sand.

Longbow at Sand 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21, damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9, second longbow at Sand 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16, damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

And both arrows thud into the elf's chest.

The javelins are thrown haphazardly at Aerik and Vic and both hit.

Javelin at Aerik 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22, damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6, Javelin at Vic 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14, damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8, wow what a set of attacks! Over to you guys. Good luck.

Male Human Cleric 2; AC 18; HP 20/20; Saves Str +4, Dex +0, Con +2, Int +1, Wis +4, Cha +2; Init +0; Passive Perception 12

I am away from my book for the day, will need the DM's aid on something. Can I use my 'wrath of the storm' ability on an attacker at range? If I can, I will use my reaction to use it against the javelin-thrower who hit me. He'll take 2d8 thunder damage, with a Dex DC 12 save for half damage.

Roaring in surprise, Aerik calls down his god's wrath on the ambushing orcs.

"Kord take you bastards! Our blood only blesses the battlefield!"

He then moves to aid the others. Grabbing hold of Sand's leg before the unconscious elf falls from his saddle, Aerik intones a short prayer of healing.

"The Champion gives you breath so you can spend it in his service," the bearded priest says. "In this case, killing bushwhacking orcs!"

Casts cure wounds on Sand, healing the elf 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 damage.

Male Wood Elf Rogue 4 (Swashbuckler); AC: 16, Unarmored: 14; HP: 21/29; Saves: Advantage vs. Charm, Dex and Int; Init: +4; Perc: +4 (Passive 14), HD 4

What do I need to do to escape the netting, Dex Check? Is it a full round action, or do I have movement left afterwards?

Vic struggles to escape from the netting.

Dex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

The Exchange

Sorry Aerik, but "Wrath of the Storm" has a 5ft range.

As the elf sways and begins a slide out of his saddle, Aerik hits him with healing.

The Exchange

In the weapon section, a net requires an action to escape. Its a DC10 Strength check but I reckon Dex works too. Either way Vic is free. So Vic can still move. There is thirty feet of difficult terrain between him and the orcs.
