Ships and sailors avoid Hellmouth Gulf along the western coast of Cheliax for good reason. Sharp rocks jut from the waves all along its inhospitable coastline, like the gaping maw of some foul beast - ready to drag the foolhardy and the foolish to a saltwater grave. For those who wish, or need, to make the journey between Pezzack to the north and the Ruins of Narona to the south, a rough road runs the full length of the coast, providing a far safer choice for those averse to traveling across the sea.

The coastal road follows the rugged coastline atop these cliffs; some stretches are hundreds of feet tall, and only occasionally do breaks in the cliff wall expose entrances to small coves and inlets. Dark sand and jagged rocks cover the coast’s small, spare beaches, and the incoming tide carries with it a sulphurous grime...

A low fog hangs along the shore, refusing to release its grip in the pervasive gloom of an overcast morning. The surf crashes against nearby cliffs, and the cold wind carries a spray of fine mist - a mist that soaks through the clothing of the six travellers heading northwards... the sullen mood of the weather echoed on the faces of three of those northward bound folk whilst the other three, focussed on either their duty or the promise of a bounty, press on with grim determination...

Even in her current predicament, the Catfolk had a cheery, friendly air about her. Whistling a tune. Yes. Shackles were not the best accessory. But she had had worse, and seen even worse than that. She wasnt going to let it ruin a good mood.

"Are we there yet?" she asks the lead of this little outing

Kit has black fur, white stripes. A very strange pattern to say the least. Not to mention the pattern on her face made it look like she has a white mask over her eyes, that were bright green. Intelligence shone there that some would not find in most places. It hid something

Last time I ever follow the advice of a cat-folk! Harry thinks to himself. Said it would be easy...low risk, high reward...Ahhh shoulda not chased the rainbow at the horizon...

His feature are swarthy from long days in the sun and his upper body is well toned, yet the black hair and beard are trimmed short, both tied into braids to stay out of his way. Other than that he appears a typical dwarf.

This is, as they say in Andoran, not Lorne's first rodeo.

So they'd gotten caught! Big deal. He knows the Cheliaxian legal system like the back of his hand, and these charges won't hold. It was that uptight noble's fault for not making clear that those tombs were on his property. The inevitable trial is something he finds himself actually looking forward to; he doesn't see enough chances to work his charm these days, and the judges in this devil-bound land fell easily to sweet words and a sultry sidelong glance partnered with a wink.

Hey, it had worked before.

Still, he feels a wee little pang of guilt for getting Kit'Arr and poor Harry mixed up in all this. There is a fair chance that he might have to throw one or both of them to the wolves in order to get off easy. He is prepared to do that, but he's not completely heartless; only as a last resort. They, of course, don't need to know that!

The trek is bound to be a long one, however, and he may as well not spend it in sour company. His captors might be partly responsible for his current circumstance, but that does not mean they can't get along.

"We most certainly are not there yet, my good kitten," Lorne says with a hint of humor. "As for our merry hosts- what would you lot think about stopping for a bit of rest and something to eat? I know my way around the stewpot, for the record."

Despite his ever-present smile (more of a smirk, really), Lorne finds his eyes wandering toward the fog-shrouded sea. There is something grim hanging in the air here, and he feels ill at ease.

Woo hoo! Hope nobody minds my vague references to what may have been our ill-fated job that got us arrested.

...aand the forum swallowed my post. Glorious.

Aella stood upon a short cliff, one of the many that dotted the shoreline. With one hand upon her hip, and the other raised above her eyes, one might have thought her to be doing something of importance. Unfortunately, the futility of scouting in such weather lessened the impressiveness of her pose. There was nothing but fog to see...

"There's nothing but fog to see." She says matter-of-factly as she trudges back to the group - as if it wasn't immediately obvious to the rest of them. She takes the brief moment of fresh air and moisture upon her cheeks to shake out her bushy, auburn hair and scratch her nose before the helm is upon her once again. "We may have walked into a maze without knowing it! If anyone were to stray from the group, they would surely be impossible to find again. Isn't that right, Robbie?" The mirth in her voice betrayed the naivety of her words. To say something so ridiculous amongst escorted criminals...

"Food sounds wonderful! But you'll have to ask these two. Last time I cooked there was a huge fire and-" She silenced herself with a cough, and looked to Marcus and Robert for guidance. The decision was theirs to make.

Also, I'm not sure how you'd like me to list prepared spells, so I'll just do it here for now.

Kit’Arr – you are going to need to hit DC30 on Escape Artist or Disable Device to get yourself free of your bonds… and, each time you attempt it, you will need to make a Sleight of Hand check (opposed by Perception checks of your captors if they are being vigilant) to escape unseen.

With their captors keeping a vigilant eye over the three manacled suspects, the party continue their slow travel northwards. Several hours south of Blackcove, the coastal path drops from its precipitous route along the clifftop down to a soaked shingle beach. So close to the waves, the mist that hangs in the morning air drenches the travellers with a salt soak… although daybreak was hours ago, the mist shows little sign of lifting - indeed the sun is nothing more than a yellow smear behind the grey canvas of the sky…

…and then, through the cold grey mist, a cry of distress rings out!!! Looking out into the crashing waves, a rowboat sits in the water at the edge of visibility. Struggling to reach a rocky outcrop, a figure in the boat is attempting to use a broken oar to punt the vessel to safety…

Perception DC20:
There are, moving around in the surf around the vessel, several shapes in the water… and the figure in the boat is frantically using the oar to push them away.

The boat is around sixty feet away – thirty feet of shingle beach, twenty feet of rocks and then a further ten feet out to sea.

Actions?

"Law and Order can't eat anything, it's a concept..." Aella said, shaking her head. Perhaps this makeshift group needed some more time spent behind a desk rather than on a horse.

The paladin kept mostly quiet as they continued, only adding minor bits and pieces to the conversations that occurred. She may have seemed lost in thought at one point, but that all changed at the sound of a person's cry. Her head snapped up towards its direction and without hesitation she vaulted forward. She struggled to undo the straps and bindings of her full plate, letting each piece drop to the sand of the beach as she ran.

If no one calls out for Aella to stop, she will wade out in as much armour as you deem appropriate (I'm not sure how much armour one could ditch in such short time). Otherwise she'll stop to listen to a better plan if you can convince her in time to not dive in. Use little words.

Soaked by the waves and making no headway towards the safety of the rocks, the man in the boat sees Aella and Robert approach... nearly toppling from the boat as he reaches downwards, he flings... apparently with the last reserves of his strength... a rope to shore.

Apologies for no post yesterday – a very busy day (although in a good kind of way; pub lunch with my girlfriend, archery lessons with my 8yo son and then an evening of comedy)… I was hardly near a computer screen all day!!!

Aella, seeing the rope landing near her feet, picks it up and, bracing herself against the rocks on the shoreline, starts to drag the stricken vessel to shore… the look of relief on the man’s face very quickly turns to panic as a large pincer, extending from beneath the turbulent water, smashes into the side of the boat…

…and then, as Robert watches, the shapes that he saw moving in the water turn and head towards the shore. As the waves go out, dragging shingle as they withdraw, the gunslinger sees four black-shelled crabs – grotesquely oversized – skittering towards Aella and himself…

Kit shrugs, she didnt have her weapons, but atleast she was still very good with her claws, she moves to the crab thing attacking her new toy, moving in to flank it, she lashes out with a claw
"Mind if i give you a paw?" she asks Aella with a wink

Claw: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 10 + 2 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 3d8 ⇒ (6) + 4 + (2, 5, 5) = 22

Note to the DM,as long as I have 1 unused grit point I gain a plus 2 to initiative. Note for next time.

Leaving her already opened manacles on the beach behind her, Kit'Arr almost bounds down the beach to start ripping into the sudden infestation... her first blow, powerful and deadly accurate, slays a crab in one vicious swipe...

No worries, will add it to my initiative count notes.

All - just in case any of you folks are waiting to go by the exact initiative count I rolled, please don't... Exact initiative order is an absolute PbP killer so we go by group initiative... When I write 'Person X, Person Y and Person Z may act'... they can act in any order (obviously the same applies when I write 'everyone may act now').

Marcus advances on Lorne. Unlocking his manacles. Now lets take care of these crabs.

Female Human Oath of Corruption Paladin 6

Aella, a little flustered from that wink, chooses not to respond in an effort to retain her dignity. However, her jaw soon goes slack as the catfolk girl goes from flirt to ferocious in all of one second. And with nothing but her claws! She doubted she could do half as well with her great sword.

"Great work! Just keep 'em off me while I get this man to shore. But, uhh, don't get hurt, okay? Come to me if you need some healing."

With that, the paladin sets to work tugging the boat back to shore once more, not willing to risk the crabs losing interest in armed prey and returning to their prior victim.
