In the Main Street the muster continues. Folks are filtering in more slowly now.

With a brief "thanks," Lydia's interlocutors hurry off to join the muster.

Aljohar sighs. "I can understand following orders. And I serve Him who protects soldiers. But you're here now, in the hands of civil authorities. We're not at war. And you've cost at least one child his father." She displays her symbol of Dol Dorn and summons up the dignity of her office. "If you cooperate, it may help you in court. You've nothing to lose and everything to gain by answering questions. Where were you taking them? And who's this "Count"? I'd wager he's not on the list of peers."

Karl follows over to loom behind Aljohar; "I'm sure you didn't mean to hurt anyone, that you were just doing a quick raid for essentials... but your boss has hung you out to dry. It'd be appreciated if you help with our inquiries."

While the man considers Aljohar's and Karl's statements his eyes shift from one to another. After drawing in a long breath he replies," All captured supplies are to be hauled to Black Cap. "

Karl:
Count Barabbas doesn't ring a bell.

There are the Black Cap Mountains to the east of Haltwhistle. The Brelish fort Drum Keep lies in the western foothills of the mountains. On the far side of the Black Caps lies Cragwar and it's rich mines. North of the Black Caps is Thrane's land. The interior of the range is terra incognita.

Drum Keep is manned by Breland Regulars, not Winehorn's men.

Jamorin nods and gives another more firm salute "Of course sir, we'll assure there's a plan in place before we depart." He says as if he will be a contributing part of said plan. "I need to collect some supplies, then I'll meet up with Lydia."

Jam heads off to get his horse and collect his gear, then returns to the muster to find Lydia. "Hey Lyds, 'm on board, Smothers said he'll find someone that can inform Winehorn, but has no plan fur defense while we're gone, wants ta talk ta ya before we leave. Ya got a plan already?"

@Dreamer of the Host: Any chance Thenji or Vex would have visited Black Pit during their time in the army as infiltrators or reconnaissance?

Thenji squints at the prisoner. "Aye, mate. What's your handle? Your outfit gave you one, eh? Or you named yerself what's yours proper, I reckon." Thenji's accent and cadence seems to lapse into something else....something not his normal self but more rough and unrefined. Something that may resonate with what Thenji presumes might be more familiar to the prisoner. He sits on his heels close to the man his voice going a tad more husky as it softens giving the impression his words are meant to be more private than the rest of the interrogators.

Since the unpleasant encounter with Mildred, Syrus has made it a point to stay as close to Thenji as possible, almost as though he were a shadow. He was, as luck would have it, one of the few people in town that could vouch for him. Still, it seemed his "heroic" deed had been enough to tell the woman off. Of course, shadowing Thenji seems to inevitably drag him into militia business. It figured that it would take Pensive's death of all things to have him comply. Didn't mean he had to be very happy about it, though. That being said, he has no qualms with dragging the bandit off to his interrogation.

At the temple, he listens in with mannerisms more indicative of eavesdropping. At the mention of the Black Cap Mountains, Syrus' eyes narrow into slats, as though he could filter out the unpleasant memories associated with that place. A mild suspicion twinges in the back of his head, one that he could only hope he was imagining.

The Temple

Guys,I made a mistake in my spoiler about the Black Caps. Aundair borders on the north of the mountains. Thrane is to the east.

Linokashtai:
Drum Keep lies on the northern major pass through the Black Caps into Aundair. The pass is undeveloped. No road runs through the pass because the terrain is very rugged. Still it acts as a kind of funnel for various monsters wandering out of the mountains.

An Orien trade road runs along the eastern fringe of the mountains; another clings to the cliffside where the Black Caps plunge in to Lake Galifar. The cliffside road is narrow and tarrifs are higher than Orien's usual because it is difficult to maintain. A Lightning Rail line runs farther east.

The interior of the Black Caps is largely unknown. Black Pit, the only known town in the mountains, lies closer to the eastern edge. Military expeditions into the mountains were limited to small scouting patrols at infrequent intervals, that didn't penetrate very deep. Like the road builders the military found it easier to work around the mountains rather than go through them. It's one of the reasons this region didn't suffer as much as other border areas of Breland.

Thenji:

Syrus:
I had a nicer post but the board monster ate it. So this is much briefer and bare bones than I'd originally written.

Syrus was with Smythe's group when they drifted into Black Pit. The town is a couple hundred people and is named after the noxiously fuming -- pit -- that locals say plunges to the heart of Khyber.

There is an unaccountably nice hotel, not a mere inn, there. After a few days in town Aundairan Provinicial forces caught up with you and Smythe retreated further into the mountains where he eventually set up a permanent camp.

More later.

She rides on back up to the muster and makes for where they are interviewing the prisoner.

@Dreamer of the Host: I think probably should have asked if that Disguise check had an impact when I made the roll. My idea was maybe to create a possible rapport wherein Thenji could then flow right into Bluff/Diplomacy, but I was looking for confirmation the Disguise v. the prisoner's life experience was a successful venture. Thenji is likely to change his angle if the prisoner doesn't seem to respond.

Got a quick break in work.

Aljohar -- sorry. I had answered your question in a version of my last post that crashed and I failed to get it into the re-write. The answer is 2-3 days ride.

Maybe you've gone out on the odd hunting trip, or just to get away from people. Some people think the mountains are named for the heavy clouds that usually shroud the peaks, but you've seen the black stone crests on those rare days when the clouds lift.

The mountains are rich in game, and monstrous hazards. Sudden weather shifts, especially cold, cold rain at higher elevations can turn a trip into an emergency in a hurry. Rock slides, while not common, can happen.

Short note before I begin, apologies for not posting in a while, been busy with education.

Uthar will have moved away shortly after the townsfolk began gathering, murmering to his two surviving squad-mates that hes going back to his smithy/small shop to lock up everything.

Inside his shop he will lock up all his cabinets and the shopfront as well as put out the forge and pack around a weeks worth of food as well as his armorsmithing tools, 'I can't drag the anvils with me on this one but I can certainly make sure the armor is well taken care of.' Is his general thought process.

He's vaugly aware of lydia returning for her horses at some point but is focused on the task at hand.

At long last, (packing everything up is going to take time) he'll secure his supplies on his horse and lead it back to the gathering, leaving nobody under the impression he would not be joining the expidition.

A brief query of another townsfolk will likely tell me where Lydia is (Uthar assumes the best tracker he knows of will be joining for reasons obvious.)

When he arrives he will ask the first unnoccupied member of the group where they are headed.

Lydia glances up as Uthar returns.

"They're questioning the prisoner in there," she tells him quietly. "It looks like the bandits and their 'Count Barabbas' are holed up in the Blackcaps. This isn't going to be an easy ride in the hills, those mountains are tough terrain. Best way I can think to take them on - and the bandits - is to travel by night, maybe."

Handing her waterskin to Thenji, Aljohar quietly backs out of the room and exits the temple, searching for Lydia. She joins the scout and Uthar where they are conversing quietly.

"Well met, Uthar; are you joining us? That's good news. Lydia, do you know much about the Blackcaps? I know they're 2-3 days ride away. With the loot they stole, we can probably catch the raiders before they get back to camp, especially if we travel light. But is that all we want to do? Get the town's goods back and get some vengeance? Or do we want to deal with this "Count Barabbas"? That seems like a different mission to me. Maybe a worthwhile one, but there's a difference between catching a small party and assaulting a fortified outpost!"

She glances at the town muster proceeding under the bleary eye of Sergeant Smothers. "I'm not sure they need to do much to defend the town anymore, but it will keep them busy and make them feel useful. Winehorn's guards will be a valuable addition if they stay for a while."

The cleric's usual subdued and disinterested manner has been replaced with a surprising vibrancy and eagerness.

Female Shifter Hunter 3 / AC15 / HP 24/24 Perception +9 (+9) Sense Motive +3

"I know the Blackcaps, but not well," Lydia says with a terse nod. "Lots of narrow passes and high vantage points, which means if we don't want to fight all the way, we'll need to go by night and take out each lookout and guard post by stealth."

She casts an experienced eye on the position of the sun.

"It's still early, they've got all day to run, and if we wanted to hit them tonight we'd need to rest and restore magic because we are not going to take out that many men with out it. So by the time we've rested they've already taken a long head start on us. I wouldn't count on catching them tonight - although if we do that's great - but more like late tomorrow night, just before dawn. But if they move as fast as they could do, they'll be in the foothills by then." Lydia grimaces. "I think the odds are we'll need to plan for a long expedition regardless. If we recover the goods in the next few days it's a bonus, but not a given."

Linokashtai waits with a flat expression for Thenji to press on with the questioning, reaching out to form a Mindlink with him while trying to avoid making the psychic display too obvious in case this bandit is able to recognize such things. Linokashtai's thoughts seem to be disconnected with language, and skip right to the direct conveying of information. If that meaning were to be encoded back into language it would translate to something like: Let's work together on this. You're better with people than I am, but I can support you with information. If you need me to step back, we can still communicate this way. Our scouts never really penetrated into the Black Caps, but I know a bit about it. He may be from Black Pit. Probably why they're resorting to banditry; it seems a nasty place. Let's find out a bit more about the company he was travelling with. Perhaps they are other retirees from the Regulars.

It seems they are afraid of this Count. If we can get details on their company and where exactly they are headed next, that might help us know what kind of group we need to put together, and what we need to tell Winehorn about the threat. Give me one moment...

Linokashtai takes a few steps away from the interrogation, holding up a finger to indicate that she'll be right back, rounding a corner if she can to cut off line of sight from the prisoner. First she removes her journal, then her spool of string. She cuts half a foot of string from her spool and then starts writing a note on a piece of paper in her journal, writing as quickly as she can a note for Aljohar. She tears out the sheet then places her psicrystal on the ground. The note reads:

"To Aljohar: Please keep this sheet of paper to communicate with me from a distance. We are finding out their numbers so that we can determine our actions going forward. Tell my crystal anything you wish to communicate. Understand that the crystal is stupid so simple queries are best."

After that, it is just all of the letters and numbers in the common alphabet written in a ring with a 'yes' and 'no' written inside of the ring. She folds up the paper, tying it to her psicrystal with the string. She then manifests the crystal some legs and sends it off to find Aljohar, returning to her previous position.

If any of these actions violates anything, please let me know and I will strike it from the record. I realized the psicrystal has legs that can last for a day and a mindlink with Lino up to a mile away, and figured it might be able to be used this way.

"'Like any army'?" Thenji says cocking his head. "Are you still at war? Are we still at war?"

He grunts. "Damn...and here I thought my service tour was over."

"Funny thing about all this, I dun't recall ever hearing about your boys coming around to ask for trade or work to barter services for goods. And trust me," Thenji winks, "I would've heard. If'n that's all your Count needs, he don't be haffin to send you and your fellows to take it and get killed by us. We'd be glad to sell or trade."

Hearing Linokastai in his head, Thenji nods slowly as if something just came to mind. "Tell ya what, Mayhew. You tell me just how many men we're talking about needing a change of undershorts and a slick of whiskey, and I'll see if we can't get a few of the merchants like good ole Karl here to put together a caravan; and we can get heading on out to where your Count is trying to keep you boys outfitted."

Jamorin comes to join Aljohar, Lydia and Uthar "So this is where everyone's been hidin." Picking up on the talk of ambushes he shrugs his shoulders "Ambush would be bad alright, and they likely expect someone'll be coming behind them, though if we get on them quickly enough they might not have time to get a proper ambush set up... though that could be too much to hope for. We know how Lino's questions are going?"

He looks towards Lydia, "We know the direction they're going, and you know the area pretty well right? You know where they're most likely to set an ambush? If we know it's coming we can maybe avoid it, or at least not be totally unawares."

Mayhew shakes his head. He looks up to a place just past Thenji's left ear. "Just because the kings signed a peace, don't mean the fight stops. The sides just change for some. But we're gonna make our own side and we'll never fight for a king again. We'll fight for ourselves."

Mayhew smiles slyly and looks at Thenji out of the corner of one eye. "What if I told you there were eight hands of hands of us? " His gaze shifts to Karl. "Could you organize that caravan?"

Lino, Aljohar : That use of the psicrystal seems perfectly legitimate. Nice thinking, Meows.

Lydia:
Between here and the mountains and maybe a day into the mountains, you know the ground well. The deeper into the mountains the less sure you are of your knowledge.

Two hundred strong? thinks Linokashtai via broadcast, That is more than a minor infestation. Do you think he is telling the truth? That is something that Winehorn will need to know.

Lino focuses inwards as she considers this, not watching the man's facial expression properly.

While she focuses on this, her psicrystal continues on its travels out to Aljohar to deliver the message. Upon finding her it lifts one of its spiderlike legs to indicate the message that's tied to it.

Karl sucks in his breath through his teeth and then gives a very Gallic shrug. "Seems like you'd need more than you could get from just this town?"

'He must be exaggerating, that's not a hamlet - that's a small town & the Lord should have to do something about it.' Karl thinks quietly to himself.

Aljohar, deep in discussion with Lydia and Uthar, doesn't see the little psicrystal until a child's shriek draws her attention. Following the hopping tyke's pointing finger, she sees the spidery little creature waving a message. Smiling, she gently picks it up, unties the message, and reads it.

"The interrogators are at work, it seems. They want to know if there's anything we'd like to know. Apparently, we can ask Linokashtai questions through this tiny thing and she can ask without us being in the room. Neat trick, huh?" she tells Lydia and Uthar.

Holding the paper in one hand and the psicrystal gently in the other, Al concentrates on talking purposefully inside her head. Hello? Can you hear me? Hello?

"I know the land well for up to a day's travel into the mountains," Lydia nods. "We could avoid places where an ambush is likely, sure. Maybe even encircle the ambushers. Problem is, what if they aren't there?" Lydia shrugs. "That would take a lot of time."

She turns and looks at the odd little crystal.

"How many day's travel did it take to get here?" she asks.

The psicrystal does not react to being thought at. It looks about as uncomfortable as a featureless being can be at being stared at. However, upon being asked how long it took to get there it taps out.

0 - D - A - Y - S.

"That's not possible, the mountains alone are two days away, and they would have to be deep inside them," Lydia shakes her head, wondering if the odd little gem had misunderstood.

"I don't think it's very smart. It may have thought you were asking it how long it took it to walk here from Lino." She looks at the little thing and speaks clearly to it. "How many days did it take the bandits to travel here from their stronghold?"

The crystal raises its front legs defensively at being called 'not very smart', but it still communicates the message. It taps out:

C-H-E-C-K-I-N-G

F-Y-I 2-0-0 B-A-N-D-I-T-S

Linokashtai communicates over the link to Thenji, How long did it take for the bandits to travel over here from their base?

"Two... two hundred bandits?" Aljohar breathes softly, glancing at Lydia in concern, "That's not a band of thieves, it's a settlement."

"Are you sure, little guy? Two HUNDRED bandits?" She watches the crystal closely for an answer, certain she misinterpreted.
