...

The first sensation that returns to your mind is an unfamiliar one: weakness. You can barely move - in fact, you seem to be entombed. Cold stone surrounds you on all sides, and you only have an inch or two of room on all sides. From somewhere outside your rocky prison, you hear a cacophony of noises. Roars, screams, whirrs, clicks, cheers, crashes, shouts, and growls all muddle together.

And so it begins...

Weakness was an unfamiliar sensation to Skaar but it was still a sensation and that was more than he'd felt in... How Long?

The big orc struggles within the confines of his prison while trying to recall the events that had lead up to his defeat. Stone, he thinks briefly. At the height of his power simple earth was little obstacle for the Unfailing Pillar but he felt so diminished now, a mere shadow of his former glory. It wasn't just the weakness that plagued him. The prayers of his worshipers were silent. Or have I simply grown deaf to them?

Maneuvering with what little space he could, Skaar braces and presses against his confines. As his muscles bulge with power his rekindled divinity flexes too.

Your divine spark is weak - or maybe it's your body that's failing. The stone gives significantly more resistance than you expect, but after a moment, it crumbles before you. Leaping out from your tomb, you find yourself on a large rock pillar in the middle of the ocean. Waves lash against its base, and you see several ships anchored a fair distance away. High in the sky above you is a highly-detailed image of the surface of the rock. As you move, the image updates itself to match. Of far greater interest, however, are the two creatures on the pillar with you. To your left is a brightly-colored reptile with sickle-clawed feet. As you emerge from the ground, it's in the process of pouncing on another creature - a strange construct with a spinning saw blade for an arm. The reptile bites and scratches the construct but is unable to penetrate the mechanical figure's armor. It retaliates with a hard blow from its saw arm, sending blood flying everywhere. As you take in all this, you realize that both creatures have momentarily ceased their struggle and are staring at you.

You have no idea what either of these beasts is.

So the sky is a mirroring the ground? Strange...

Skaar was puzzled by the reptilian creature and its mechanical opponent but not too curious to forgo his own defense. There was no telling if either of these creatures were his jailers or agents of whoever had attacked and nearly crippled him to begin with. The hulking greenskin clenches his huge fists but doesn't take a hostile stance. Not yet at least. He squares off with the pair, unashamed of his nakedness.

"Don't stop on my account. Whoever wins can tell me where we are", he bellows. "And what year it is."

Not the entire sky: only a portion. Think of a holographic jumbotron. ;-)

There's a momentary silence at your appearance, but both of the beings on the pillar with you give no sign of understanding your words. The reptile, seemingly believing that your flesh will taste better, pounces on you. You're able to fend off most of its claws, but a couple talons rake you (for 11pts damage). The construct, meanwhile, continues to follow its previous commands and follows the reptile, saw blade whirring all the while. It carves deep gashes into its back.

Skaar grunts in surprise and pain as the reptile pounces and tears at his flesh. Almost immediately his moss-colored hide begins to knit itself together but the big orc doesn't wait for the creature to attack again. He rears back with a huge fist and bludgeons it - a blow that would have shattered mountains in the past. Skaar keeps a close eye on the mechanical beast in case it plans on attacking him too.

Spending a mythic power for fast healing.

Punch: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

You land a vicious uppercut, snapping the beast's neck. As it crumples to the ground, the construct looks at the corpse, then at you, then at one of the ships, then at you, then at the corpse. It appears confused.

Skaar glances down at the slain reptile and then looks back toward the mechanical creature. "Thank you for the help friend", he offers.

His words holding no meaning for the construct, he tries contacting who or what it appears to be communicating with. The hulking, unclothed, orc turns and waves toward one of the distant ships.

How far are they?

About 100ft away

There appears to be a good bit of discussion going among among the various ships. Finally, a magically-enhanced voice drifts across the distance. "Who in the Nine Hells are you?!?"

Skaar opens his mouth to proudly proclaim his titles but stops himself before a word can be spoken. He was still far too weak to reveal himself and whoever or whatever stripped him of his power might still consider him a threat. Erring on the side of caution, he opts to only tell half the truth.

"A traveler", the huge orc bellows toward the source of the voice. "Lost and far from home it would seem. Is this construct yours?"

"A traveler, huh? Well, you just cost me a good bit of coin. My robot was about to end that saurian before you stuck your nose in. How do you propose to pay me back?"

Diplomacy Take 10: 10 + 9 = 19

Not entirely confident that the mysterious voice would be so quick to let it go, Skaar shapes a skin of magical force to protect his naked hide.

Spending a spell pool point for armored magic.

"Heh, you'll pay me back, all right. You dropped that saurian in one punch. Let's see how you do against my robot! Win or die, stranger."

The robot whirrs and raises its saw arm.

Skaar still didn't know what that word meant but he recognized that he wasn't in a position to argue with his would-be rescuers if he wanted to escape the rocky pillar. Whoever the people on the ship were they were a warrior people much like his own kin and though he held no ill will toward the bladed construct he would give them their bloodsport.

"You have fought with honor friend. I will grant you a warrior's death."

The big orc puts his fists up in a brawler's stance. The moment he sees an opening he smashes into the robot.

"Walk with your ancestors", Skaar whispers in deference to his slain opponent pausing briefly to consider its bizarre anatomy.

"It's done!" he bellows. "Will you see me off this rock now? I could use some food... and ale."

Your interrogator lets out a hearty (and thoroughly-unpleasant) laugh. "HaHarr!! You're quite the fighter! Yeah, I got a place for ya! You're gonna make me a lot of money. Stay put; I'm sending a boat to ya."

You see a small boat being lowered from one of the ships. It's being rowed by two sailors.

You don't have the right skills (Disable Device or Knowledge(engineering), but you can bring the entire arm with you. It'll function as an improvised two-handed weapon that deals 1d8 slashing damage.

Much like the claws and fangs he used to take as trophies from the beasts he wrestled, Skaar takes the severed arm from the slain robot. When the sailors arrive he gives them a grunt of greeting and studious glance before climbing aboard their vessel. "Your robot was a worthy opponent."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

What do these guys look like? Race? Equipment?

You're not sure how much the sailors understand your words, but they grunt in response as they row you toward their ship. Both are burly Mwangi males with cutlasses tied to their belts. Their ship is a triple-masted vessel named Wormwood. As you approach, you see many cannons. Although the deck is filled with sailors, the clear leader is a large muscular dark-skinned man with an eyepatch. He's bald-headed with a long braided beard, and his crew gives him a wide berth.

When you climb aboard, he looks you up and down appraisingly. "I'm Captain Harrigan, and you'll be fighting for me now. Do as I say, and you'll prosper. If you don't like my offer, this is your only chance to do something about it. Are you man enough?" He juts his chin out and awaits your response. You notice he has a handaxe and a vicious-looking shortsword at his belt, but his hands are folded across his chest. Despite his challenge, he hasn't even bothered to assume a ready position.

Skaar takes in his surroundings in silence. These were hard men accustomed to taking what they wanted from life. In other circumstances he might admire that boldness but the Unfailing Pillar was no man's servant - deprived of his full divinity or not. The hulking orc stands his ground and offers his 'host' a sharp nod of greeting.

"Good to meet ya Captain Harrigan. The name's Skaar. I appreciate you gettin' me off that rock but you're mistaken if you think you can press me into workin' for you. Better have tried."

The big orc studies the captain's stance. "If you'd just drop me at the nearest port I'd be happy to be on my way."

I'm home now. I was actually posting from the Shrine auditorium earlier today.

Skaar reflects on how much bigger the world felt - or maybe I'm just smaller. In his prime few among the gods would challenge his strength or his manhood and no mortals would even think it.

"Unless you'd prefer to see another test of my strength", he growls. "I thought after seein' me kill that reptile and your robot you'd have seen enough."

Captain Harrigan throws his head back and laughs. "HaHarr! We've got a thinkin' greenie here! Don't start givin' yourself any ideas, or I'll give you some 'Scars' you won't forget anytime soon. You're my newest muscle - nothing more. We'll talk more later, 'Scar.'" Turning his back on you, he addresses the nearest crewman. "Take him below and get him some clothes. Make sure Fishguts knows he's got an extra mouth to feed tonight."

Skaar looks down at himself, reminded of his unclothed state. He recalls how much mortals prefer being covered up, a notion he never put much thought into.

"Some food would be good and some ale", he grunts in reply to the good captain's offer. "But this is only temporary. I've got someplace I need to be."

Wherever I can get some damned answers...

Your assigned guide, a curly-haired female Halfling, gives you a humorless chuckle as she leads you belowdecks to the quartermaster. "Whatever you say, buddy." The quartermaster is a rough-looking female Half-Orc with a wide scar on her throat. She looks you up and down approvingly as she retrieves a spare set of clothes for you. LOL. Harsh!

The sight of his curly-haired guide and Grok rekindles another long neglected hunger in Skaar. He eyes looks both women over with an appraising eye.

Skaar looks the clothing over and hands back the roughspun tunic. He squeezes into the leggings but they stretch to their limit around the hulking orc's tree trunk legs. The boots are similarly ill-fitted.

"It's a long story", he explains. "The short version is that I don't know. Parts of my memory is missing. I'm hopin' your Captain Harrigan can get me someplace with a powerful mage."

Yeah, I'm a bit of a dick GM at times, LOL. ;-)

Both women look at you with concerned expressions. "Amnesiac, huh? That's awful! Did someone curse you, or did you just crack your head real good?"

"That's part of the time I can't remember", Skaar answers with a slight shrug of his powerful shoulders. "Maybe a bit of both."

"But I find it's best to not dwell on the bad when the good's right in front of you. If I didn't lose my memory I wouldn't be here with a couple pretty lasses like yourselves for example", the big orc adds with a flirtatious smirk. "So maybe gettin' stranded out here was for the best. We'll just have to see. What do you think?"

Fishguts turns out to be exactly what you'd expect from a ship's cook: a fat slovenly-looking man with a wide grin, several missing teeth, and a hearty belly laugh. Upon seeing your size, he offers you a double portion of fish stew. Normally we'd be playing the fun+deadly rum game, but since you're a fallen deity with a ridiculous Fort save, I don't see the point. ;-)

Fishguts's appearance didn't impress but the chef's double portion of stew went a long way in earning the big orc's appreciation. He eats with shameless gusto only stopping for a thunderous belch once both bowls were licked clean. The food was like an angelic chorus across his long neglected tongue. Other gods had often looked down on the Unfailing Pillar's love of mortal pleasures (food and drink among them) but he couldn't imagine an immortal existence without them. In some ways he believed they were a source of his strength. They tied him to the mortals that helped define his divinity.

"Keep feeding me like this and we're gunna be the best of friends", Skaar says with a laugh.

Outlaws and misfits, Skaar muses as he studies the working crew. I would have been their god and champion once upon a time. I will be worthy of their worship once again.

Skaar will make an effort to learn the names and roles of any other member of the crew that look to be especially attractive and/or influential.

Attractive and/or Influential Crew Members
Captain Harrigan
Master Scourge - First Mate, human, big whip, cruel eyes, avoids you
Rosie Cusswell - pretty female Halfling rigger
Cut-Throat Grok - Half-Orc quartermaster
Fishguts - slovenly human cook
Crimson Cogward - male Varisian, missing an ear, pugnacious
Slippery Syl - female human, likes to have conversations with herself
? - female Varisian, mage, always in either her cabin or with Captain Harrigan

Captain Harrigan ushers you into his cabin for a private discussion. "Here's the deal, buddy. I'm a rather prominent figure in the fighting business. Gladiator combat, pit fights, cage matches, the works. That robot you smashed up? I was testin' it out. Right now, we're headed to Kaer Maga for a tournament. Starts in less than a week, and I don't have a fighter anymore.

"I'd like you to work for me. You're a total unknown, know how to throw a punch, and will play well for the crowds. Plus, you took out a robot and a saurian in less than a minute while naked and unarmed. Hell of a story, that. So here's my offer: fight for me in the tournament. I'll get you whatever gear you need, and if you do well, I'll sponsor you as you move up the circuit, and you'll get a share of the winnings. Whatta you say? I can guarantee you won't find a more generous offer anywhere else."

While his demeanor is friendly, you get the sense that Captain Harrigan will not be happy you turn him down. While you don't know how he'll respond, based on what you've observed from his crew, Harrigan gets what he wants and doesn't tolerate dissent. Plus, regardless of your answer, you're stuck on The Wormwood until they make landfall unless you fancy swimming....

Kaer Maga is fairly old if I remember my Golarion lore correctly. Has Skaar heard of it?

Skaar crosses his massive arms across his thickly muscled torso and considers the captain’s offer. He hungered to learn more about what had happened to him and what had happened to the world in his absence but he was still too weak to accomplish much on his own. He would need to build up his strength and resources for now and the captain’s games sounded like the perfect place to accomplish both. He studies the captain’s casual stance, wary for signs of treachery.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

”I’ll fight for you, for now, but you gotta know that this is only a temporary arrangement. There’s people out there waitin’ for me. I can’t be your muscle forever.”

"Tell me more 'bout this tournament."

Yeah, it predates the Azlanti, so you've definitely heard of it. Gunpowder, on the other hand... :-)

The captain's offer appears to be genuine, and he seems pleased by your acceptance. "I understand completely. After the tournament, we'll talk and hash out something more official. Regarding the tourney, it's the annual Gorum's Arena. Single-elimination, winner takes all. Not sure what the prize is this year, but it's always something incredible. Never money - champions are rewarded with things much more valuable. Last year's grand prize was the True Name of a succubus. Of course, you gotta win first.

"Qualifying's always the same. Six people enter the arena. Big weapons rack in the center. Last person standing moves on to the next round. The actual tournament part changes. Sometimes it's a team fight. Sometimes there's an alternate win condition. Sometimes there's exotic beasts in with you. It really depends. Always five rounds, though, once the qualifiers are done.

"Now. Tell me what you'll need."

Skaar scratches his head as he considers the question. In the past he would have feasted on a dragon's heart for strength or maybe dressed in his favorite hydra-hide cloak. With his powers drained to nearly nothing he didn't know where to start.

"I've been a gladiator a few times. The dark elves are into some kinky shit..."

"For the fights I don't need much. Maybe a big spear and a brace of javelins. Don't need armor - I've never seen the point", he explains while pounding on his bulging pectorals. "You ropin' more of the crew into this? You said it was teams of six."

"For tonight I wouldn't mind more of that rum."

"Teams of six? Oh, you mean the qualifier rounds. No, those are always a free-for-all. Besides, none of my crew show the potential you do. Once the tournament starts, I'll get your the gear you requested. For now, have all the rum you want."

Skaar grunts in approval. "I guess we'll talk more once we reach Kaer Maga."

"Who's the girl that's always followin' you around? Is she yours?" he asks.

Until we reach Kaer Maga Skaar will do the following (in no particular order):

1) Get the know the crew, specifically those with names mentioned in your previous post. How long have they been with Harrigan? What do they think of him? Do they have any noteworthy goals of aspirations? He’ll work to ingratiate himself with the crew in a general sense, helping out where he can and never hesitating to show off his strength.

2) Find ways to build his strength either physically, magically, divinely – whatever he can get. I doubt there’s ambrosia or something onboard but it’s worth a shot.

3) Try to get Harrigan’s pet mage to help unlock his memories. I’m not sure what sphere that’d be but hopefully she has it.

4) Bed Rosie, Grok, or both. A man’s gotta have goals. =P

A laugh comes from one of the corners of the room as the woman materializes. "Peppery Longfarthing at your service. I'm a mage."

Getting to Know the Crew
Master Scourge - most of the crew hates him but are too afraid to try anything - especially with Captain Harrigan around
Rosie Cusswell - plays the fiddle - but not very well
Cut-Throat Grok - enjoys bawdy stories and crude jokes
Fishguts - claims to have once been a gourmet chef at a fancy restaurant; serious alcoholic
Crimson Cogward - devout worshiper of Pharasma; enjoys a good brawl
Slippery Syl - definitely has a few screws loose upstairs; has knives stashed everywhere on her person; people give her a wide berth

Most of the crew (with the exception of Scourge, Fishguts, and Peppery) were press-ganged at various ports. Nobody particularly likes sailing under Captain Harrigan, but there isn't much they can do about it. He's proven his strength enough times that they know that mutiny would be futile. Scourge is hated almost as much; his doling out punishments seems almost fetish-like. Peppery keeps to herself, for the most part. Fishguts is loved by all; when he's sober (rarely), his meals are among the best you've ever eaten.

You end up getting along best with Rosie, Grok, Fishguts, and Crimson Cogward. He's always up for a sparring match or arm-wrestling competition, and although he doesn't possess anything near your level of strength, always gives you a run for your money.

Memory Unlocking
It takes some time before you're able to get a meeting with Peppery Longfarthing. She listens as you explain your problem but is unable to help you. "My magic comes from within and usually manifests in destructive ways. Manipulation of the mind is not my specialty. If you need something blown up, on the other hand..."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Bedding the Girls
Even without your divinity, you're still an attractive Half-Orc in prime physical condition. In addition, you're articulate and well-mannered. Grok jumps at the chance to have you.

Rosie takes a bit longer, as cross-species relations isn't really her thing. Still, she's seen you naked and clearly liked what she saw. Woo her a little, and she'll likely be yours.

Getting to Know the Crew

Master Scourge

Skaar was familiar with bullies like Scourge. Traditional orc culture was built on a foundation of cruelty and intimidation... something Skaar had never believed in as such foundations were often fragile at best. It was good that Scourge kept his distance, and that satisfied the big orc for now, but he'd have to be taught a lesson before Skaar's time on the Wormwood was over.

Rosie Cusswell

Mediocre or not, Skaar's happy to listen to Rosie's fiddling. There was was something wonderful about mortals, so brief and flawed, learning and performing the arts. It was a beauty many of the other gods often overlooked. It was a beauty that made the pretty halfling even more attractive in the big orc's eyes.

Partially to woo and partially to help encourage her, Skaar offers Rosie some pointers.

Untrained Perform to Aid: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Cut-Throat Grok

Grok was a kindred spirit if there ever was one and he was happy to see that whatever event had given her that scar across her neck hadn't dimmed the orcish woman's spirits. He's happy to share all the bawdy tales she'd like during their intimate times together. In the sweaty afterglow of their rutting he begins to plant the seeds of a brighter future. A future free of Harrigan.

Fishguts

The fat man was inspired and had a gift that even the elves would envy but Skaar can't help but wonder if his alcoholism was a bandage for some hidden wound. Was a lifetime as a cook on a pirate ship really all he'd wanted from life or was he another victim of Harrigan's tricks. He tries to get Fishguts talking during one of his more sober moments.

Diplomacy: 10 + 9 = 19

Crimson Cogward

In the past the Unfailing Pillar had a begrudging respect for Pharasma and Skaar's grateful for Cog's strength and fighting spirit. He wasn't certain what challenges Kaer Maga's tournament held but without the full extent of his godly powers he'd need to be as sharp as he could get. After one of their bouts he probes Cogward on what he appreciates about the Lady of Graves.

Diplomacy: 10 + 9 = 19

Slippery Syl

The mad weren't an unknown to Skaar. At the height of his power he'd counted many of them among his worshipers. The question remained if hers was a part of her character or the result of a long untreated wounded spirit. The big orc chats with the woman when he can, showing her and her knives the respect they deserve.

Memory Unlocking

Skaar isn't overly disappointed that Peppery can't help. It was a long shot to hope that she'd been knowledgeable and skilled enough with her magic to piece together his shattered memories but there was no harm in the hoping.

"Don't worry 'bout it", he laughs. "You can make it up to me by findin' the right kind of mage once we get to Kaer Maga."

He pauses to consider the fiery mage further. "So what's a girl like you doin' with a creep like Harrigan? With your powers you could go anywhere."

Peppery Longfarthing
Peppery thinks for a minute. "Try the Troll augurs. They're rarely wrong." At your next question, however, she grows offended. "Creep? He's an old friend. How dare you!"

Rosie Cusswell
The halfling listens to your advice and slowly begins to improve. She genuinely seems to enjoy your company, and, while you haven't been able bed her yet, you realize that she's looking for more than a simple roll in the hay.

Cut-Throat Grok
In a particularly-vulnerable moment, Grok reveals that her scar came from a street gang that robbed her and left her for dead. Fishguts Kroop found her and nursed her back to health. She'd like to leave Harrigan's employ, but she's not going anywhere without Kroop.

Ambrose 'Fishguts' Kroop
During a particularly-long drinking session, you learn Fishguts' tragic story. Once a widely-renowned chef at a high-class establishment, his reputation was ruined after a moment's indiscretion with a co-worker was discovered. Taking advantage of the man's shame, Harrigan conned him into a card game. By the time it was over, Kroop owed him a lifetime of service.

Crimson Cogward
"The Lady of Graves judges the souls of the dead before leading them to their final rest. Best to stay on her good side, right?"

Slippery Syl
While she has yet to acknowledge your presence, you've gradually become the only person on "The Wormwood" who can sit within arm's-length without being attacked. Based on the reaction of the rest of the crew, this is the closest anyone's ever gotten to her.

Peppery Longfarthing

Quickly realizing he has taken the wrong approach, Skaar changes his tone but doesn't apologize for what was said.

"He's a friend to you but the rest of the crew isn't so fortunate. Many were taken and pressed into service. In my experience all men who lead through fear end up the same way", he explains darkly. "If he's as good as you say, he shouldn't have trouble findin' crew that wants to serve on the Wormwood."

Rosie Cusswell

Skaar is happy to spend time with Rosie and give whatever layman's pointers he can but he slows down his attempts to bed her. She wanted commitment and lifelong companionship - neither of which the Unfailing Pillar could give her. He'd seen mortals shattered by unrequited love before and had no interest in harming the halfling in such a way.

Cut-Throat Grok/Fishguts

Was there a value assigned to 'lifetime of service'?

Crimson Cogward

"A man that loves to fight but isn't too proud to show respect where it's due - a rare find in this world. What'r you doin' with Harrigan and the Wormwood? You could find a good scrap anywhere."

There was no value assigned. Harrigan's too smart to leave a loophole like that.

Fishguts/Grok

”No man should live in chains – including chains of debt. If Harrigan was to forgive what you owed him, would you walk away from him and the Wormwood? You’ve got a real gift with food and I’m not just sayin’ that because I was half-starved when you fed me. I’ve always said there was nothing worse than a life full of potential that’d gone unlived.”

Peppery Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Crimson Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

Peppery Longfarthing
The fiery mage stalks off in silence, but at least she didn't blast you with a fireball or turn you into something unpleasant.

Grok/Fishguts
"In a heartbeat. He's a fowl man who loves to take advantage of the unfortunate. He cheats at cards, too. Still, what can I do? It's not like he's just gonna cancel the debt."

Crimson
It seems that you've caught the man at a particularly-vulnerable time, as he's being unusually open with you. "The Wormwood's all I deserve. I'm not a good person. You gotta understand ... I've done things. Things I can't ever take back, ya know? Under Harrigan, it's only a matter of time afore I get to the Boneyard. Then it'll all be over..."

Do you plan to do anything else with Rosie or Slippery Syl?
