Kintargo, though far from the largest city in Cheliax, is still a bustling port. Ships of all shapes and sizes seek harbor at the docks and sail the nearby waters - everything from Chelish naval warships to fishing vessels to trading vessels from Varisia.

The city is a strange one, especially for the average Chelish citizen. It is much more cosmopolitan than the interior cities with foreigners and non-humans being much more common, especially among the transient population. While the slave markets are still bustling, other influences of Imperial Cheliax, like the presence of the Church of Asmodeus, are much less prominent. Still, while things seem a lot more chaotic than in places like Egorian, the rule of law remains...albeit a bit more brutal at times.

Your group has been assembled by Nicolas Gantry, a human in his 40s, that acts as an attache to the royal court. A week ago each of you, having responded to the Queen's message, were summoned to Kintargo, introduced to Nicolas, and rather hastily assembled into a functional "group". You have each been given two weeks of room and board at a local inn, leaving a week remaining on your pre-paid stays. Finally, you were given a single rather cryptic charge - investigate the situation in Ravounel Forest and report back. Nicolas leaves the group with two final things - a letter bearing the Queen's seal which he states that you should show (and open) only in the most dire of emergencies, and a piece of advice, "Don't trust the priests of Erastil. Share their faith or not, they are not your friends." With that, he departs the city, taking no questions and offering no further clarification.

No news of any other such groups throughout the nation was provided to any of you, but from the solicitation, it seems rather clear that there are others facing similar challenges elsewhere.

While I won't begin posting enforcement until Friday, you can consider game to be "on" at this point. Since people may take some time to adjust to the medium, I wouldn't go charging out of the city in the next 24 hours, but rolling (especially to gather information or the like) is certainly acceptable. Not that Kintargo is a very merchant-heavy city, so any last minute purchases are easy to make.

I arrive in the town of Kintargo by foot and am extremely relieved to find that both food and board have been prearranged, so head there immediately. I ache after crossing such a distance and the first thing I enquire about is a bath to soothe my aches and pains. Once refreshed I head for a table in the inn where I can purchase both food and a drink, while eating a small group appears in front of my table and take seats around it. I look up a little confused until one man speaks up and introduces himself as Nicolas Gantry; sent by the royal court to issue our first charge. He then hands us a letter each, gives a few orders and advice before departing.

When Nicolas hands us the letters I place it inside my uniform in an inner pocket to keep it safe, orders were to only open it in the most dire of emergencies so I do not even give it a second glance and it gets tucked away safely. I then continue to eat and look around the table, I nod at everyone between mouthfuls and raise my mug in hopes of the barmaid coming over to bring another round of drinks for everyone at the table. Once the drinks have arrived I thank her and smile as she walks away before turning back to my table companions. "Good day to you all, I'm Rona, pleased to meet you. I look forward to spreading the law with you and solving the problems given to us. The first round of drinks is on me." With that I raise my mug before taking a a swallow of drink. "So, do any of you know the Ravounel Forest? I am not from here so I have no idea what has been going on locally."

Sorry if that changes what you had planned, I wan't sure what else to put so figured a meal in an inn would be a good place to start the ball rolling. I can always change things if needed.

A Knowledge roll is fine, but you'll need to give me some idea about what information you are looking for. Terrain features? Some sort of astronomy? Identify some person's ethnicity?

Particularly the terrain features, climate and the villages around.

Kintargo itself is built on the coast and otherwise rests on what amounts to a plain. The terrain isn't particularly hilly and, aside from the relatively nearby Ravounel Forest, there is not an overabundance of trees.

Kintargo is the nearest major city and the most noteworthy site within it is definitely the harbor itself, everything else in the city has clearly grown out of that.

This was the second time Baolus visited Kintargo... not many of his quarries managed to run so far north and for a good reason: where would they go afterwards? Nidal? No, they generally went east, towards Andoran.

Baolus looked around the table, trying to remember if he already met any of them. Both the women looked familiar, but he could not know from where or when. At the elf's toast and question, Baolus spoke.

"Greetings to all, I'm Baolus Yeralzery." At least for now, this was just like any other job, no need to make friends. "This is not my favored region of our kingdom, so my knowledge about the land might be kind of outdated. As far as I remember, the Ravounel Forest is located southwest from here, about seventy or eighty miles... never heard of anything unusual going on around there."

Baolus looks around, trying to get the servant attention.

"Girl, bring me something to eat and drink. Some meat if you have, lamb or pig, and a strong ale to help it down." With his order done, he changed his attention back to the table. "So what you bunch do for living? I'm a hunter." He then pointed out his bow and axe by his side.

Baolus is a strong built man with 6 ft height and 187 pounds. Like all the kalabutas, he has dark skin and brown eyes. He keeps his beard short and his head shaved, a habit from his time as a slave. He wears a chainmail and carries a longbow at his back, as well as a greataxe. He is an asmodean, carrying a small holy symbol in a necklace.

Political campaigns, market exploitation, even the common assassination...all these things made easier with information. And the greatest source of information was, of course, unsuspecting individuals. Esken had a knack for talking. Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life. In this sense, Esken had never worked, but truly lived by his words. And he had a comfortable life set for him, paved with the lies and bureaucracy of the Cheliax government. But it wasn't enough. To reach the echelons of government needed to make the changes he desired in his community, he would need currency. Answering the Queen's call for a hero, after convincing (bribing) the proper representatives for a request of course, he persuaded his childhood friend Ihon to join him. Esken always held respect for Ihon, merely for the fact that he was never hesitant to disagree or call him out on his lies, bribes, and hypocrisy. A rare trait when his entire career had been based on those three pillars.

Recognizing that the Queen would try to be efficient with her recruitment of heroes, he arrived early to Kintargo, in an attempt to identify other groups which would have came through and to pull information from the bartender who must have dealt with the more inebriated adventurers.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23 After conversing with the the bartender regarding the locals, Esken tries Gather Information to find out what the bartender knows about other adventurers who had recently passed by here.

The next day he finds himself at the table with his new compatriots and soon to be friends. Everyone is capable of being a friend to Esken, if that weren't true he would never survive in politics. Immediately he's kicking himself. Politics 101, always buy the first round of drinks. You are too kind Rona, I'll have whatever you're having. As to answer both your and Balous's inquiry, consider me a government clerk, buried in paperwork on a day to day basis. Of which, Ravounel Forest rarely comes up other than the occasional missing livestock that turns up dead near the borders, or the reports of smoke that is visible in the black of night. Other than that, I have no reason to believe that it isn't a place of civility and I am looking forward to extend my network of colleagues and connections.

Ihon spent the week walking the streets of Kintargo, seemingly at random. In the past week he's become a regular sight. The scarred man with the small lizard upon his shoulder. He doesn't appear to be looking for anything in particular, simply walking, and watching.

Eventually he found himself at a table with others. All gathered to answer the Queen's call. The creature on the man's shoulder seemed to be paying more attention to the gathering than he was. It's head bobbing like a bird as it rested easily on it's perch. Hrm? He says, as he's brought back to the conversation, Oh..no. I don't know anything about the forest.

He turns back to looking around the room and fiddling idly with his walking stick, tracing the carvings in it with his thumb.

I find myself looking at the lizard sitting upon the mans shoulder, a sight I am not used to. But at the return of the waitress I snap back to reality and face the man who has introduced himself as Baolus, "I was in the night watch at Westcrown before answering Her Majesties call. What do you hunt that requires the axe as well as the bow?"

Leaning against my chair there is a large two handed curved sword, the handle worn down with years of use but the blade and scabbard seemingly in perfect condition. I shift my position and the sword begins to fall, but I manage to grab it out of the air before it clatters to the floor and place it once again at my side.

I pick up my mug again and take a small sip and look at the clerk, "Umm, thank you, I don't want to drink while none of you are, so it makes sense more me to buy the first round. This is just mead, it has a nice taste to eat and is sweet and goes really nicely with the venison stew. I never got to drink much whilst at Westcrown, working every night and obviously you can't drink whilst on duty. So I am making use of the time before we head out to the forest ... speaking of which, should we try to arrange for transport to get there or walk it?"

Ihon turns back to look at the elf inquisitively. His head tilts to the side in an almost amusing mimicry of his small companion. Rona'Nathaniel. The elven nightwatchman of Westcrown. The man says softly. We have heard of you... He smiles slightly as he leans back and turns to examine the room again.

What better time than now for drinks, Rona! Finish your mead and find something on the shelf which is normally too high for night guards to reach.

Motioning to the barkeep

Pardon friend!, this night guard has sacrificed much for so little. What ever he wants, and be sure to throw it on my "tab".

Esken gives a sly wink to the barkeep before returning his attention to the group.

Never miscount the value of a favor, I certainly have cashed in a few to keep night guards out of my mischievous youth... No disrespect of course, I respect the values of your organization and am ecstatic to have a goal oriented member such as yourself.

Directly to Phaedra

Thats fantastic to hear Phaedra, My name is Esken and it is wonderful to meet a fellow fan of fighting. I've seen quite a few ruckuses in the streets before and am excited for my own chance to grit a few teeth

Esken, in attempting to gather information, you find that the various people in the bar are fairly free with commentary about adventurers. The information you receive is all over the place and there are clearly a lot of "adventurers" that pass through town. Most seem to come from Varisia and the second largest number are Chelaxians going to Varisia. You are easily able to glean that no one stands out in recent time that would qualify as an adventurer, no locals seem to remember any particular person or group that stands out.

As for the inn itself, it is fairly well appointed. You all are able to buy any food or drink for normal prices. People seem to give you all space to meet and don't really bother you, but it is clear that travelers are extremely common, so no one seems to give you all a second thought.

Rona'Nathaniel Gassan wrote:

Baolus smiles.

"Well, I hunt men of course! You see, our society needs rules, they are here to protect us, and when some men ignore it and do whatever they want, law and order bites them in their asses..." He points to his bow and axe again. "In my case, Law is the axe and Order is the bow!" He laughs loudly.

Rona'Nathaniel Gassan wrote:

"It would indeed be interesting, but I have no funds to acquire one, and we are no thieves."

Now that the scaly wizard spoke, Baolus indeed remembered about some talk regarding an incorruptible elven night guard from Westcrown. He still could not remember from where he saw the girl though.

Baolus paid attention to the two men in front of him.

What are they doing here?

"Look, no offense, but what are you two doing here? I'm a skilled hunter and fighter, and both Rona and Phaedra are also fighters... you, Esken, are a clerk and you, I do not even know your name..."

Ihon answers without turning back to the group, speaking quietly, Ihon Volarian. He smiles and looks at Baolus with an intense gaze, I'm sorry. I didn't realize I hadn't introduced myself. The man tilts his head to the side and scratches the scars on his neck.

I am here because I was asked. With nothing more to say he leans back. The man doesn't appear smug in any way and it seems like he feels he fully answered the question.

I look at the man who seems to have heard of me and upon hearing his words my face shows a mix of emotions; sorrow, pity and anger. "So another hater, just when I thought I could get away from them here, well I shall show them!" I take a couple of breaths to control myself and just as I am about to speak someone else gets in first ... thankfully.

I look to the clerk after listening to his words carefully, "I shall accept the drink to build trust and to say thanks for appreciating what it is that us Dottari do, but do not think for a second that I will forgive or ignore any unlawful behaviour. I have heard of those few Dottari that give in to temptation and I have even arrested some of them myself. I take it that is not what you were insinuating?" My voice became a bit colder on the subject of traitors, but soon returns to it's normal tone.

I take another mouthful of mead and raise my mug towards Baolus for a clink, "I've often wanted to chase those that fled the city for their crimes, but my orders have always been to stay within the city limits and leave them for the retrievers. I have the utmost respect for what you do and how you help us to keep the peace." After the clink I take a small mouthful as it would be rude not to and beckon the waitress over again, "Could I possibly have some bread please, I would like to leave this bowl clean. I would appreciate it a lot if you could please pass on my respect to the chef for this wonderful meal."

Baolus follows the elf's lead and thanks with a simple nod.

The serving staff nods and will fill any further orders the group has. They are pleasant, but clearly busy so they don't spend much time conversing with you all.

A sullen female wearing clothes suited for the extremes of nature attempts to join the conversation of the rag tag group in front of her. By her well traveled leggings lays her ever vigilant companion.

Realizing she had missed several chances at a more adequate time for introductions, Aeliana lifts her head up from the corner of the table. The large panther hidden under the table laying by her feet anticipating his master's hesitance perks up to encourage her. Slowly she gains composure out of her sulk and finally comments to the group.

I am Aeliana Rias, the home I call my own is the wilderness, where no goods of a slave's work can be purchased and life is more meaningful than a career of paperwork.

Aeliana looks back down at the table, worried her first comment was too harsh for someone she had just met. The large black cat nudges her again, clearly the more confident of the two.

I'm sorry, I'm here for the quest. I bring to the table my longbow and what rarely survives that, my companion Voltaire finishes.

The large cat fixes both front paws on the table and gives a growl of approval.

Without looking, Ihon reaches over and lifts his mug shortly before the table is shaken by the cat's large paws, then carefully places it back down. The small creature on his shoulder chirps, a sound reminiscent of a bird, and hops to the man's opposite shoulder. Notably, away from the large animal growling in contentment.

The man chuckles and speaks softly to his companion, I think he likes you.

I believe now, it's fairly clear why I'm here.

Esken gives the large panther a smile.

Civility my friends! Not all confrontations must lead to bloodshed. Although from eyeing the group, we are more than capable. However, I'm sure Rona could agree that information is best taken from someone willing to talk, not a corpse.

Male Elf Fighter (Tactician) : 2 HP 12/18 | AC 17 T 13 FF 14 | Fort+4 Ref +3 Will+0 | Initiative +6 | Perception +6

The woman I believed to be asleep raises her head to speak and seems to be having some issues before she moves slightly as if being pushed, but no one is there. "I agree that paperwork can be tedious, but it is necessary and therefore I do what I must. There will be paperwork on the journey; even in the wilderness, as Her Majesty or Her Majesties clerks and ministers will want to know what is happening every step of the way. So a clerk joining us is a good idea as they would know what to write in the reports instead of just writing everything as I do."

As the cat suddenly appears on the table I almost choke on my drink and cough a little until everything is back to normal, " wheez ... I take it, cough is Voltaire?" I seem more shocked at the sudden appearance of such a creature than the treat the creature poses at the moment. That is until the strange exchange between cat and tiny raptor somehow relaxes me.

After listening to Esken I nod sincerely, "I agree that Diplomacy is often the first step as you say corpses do not give information, false or true. Unfortunately, in my many years of service it has become apparent to me that my tongue is not made of silver, but in fact lead. Have any of you dedicated yourself to the mastery of words?"

When the cat appeared, instead of being alarmed Baolus was quite relieved... he finally put the faces in the correct memories. He looked at Aeliana.

"Oh sweet Prince, how could I forget? Four months ago, on the Fields of Chelam, that gang of bandits that were hitting merchants at the Longacre road... and I never had the chance to thank you for the help. I shall by you a drink at least!"

Now the only mystery that remained was the other girl... where he knew her from? Baolus shook his head and shrugs at the elf's mention of the 'mastery of words'.

"In my line of work it is not quite necessary... I just need a couple of good information here, strike some fear in the hearts of others there and it generally solves the problem, giving me the extra help to track some weasel. Once I find them, I generally just say 'surrender'... if they do not, no words are needed further."

Phaedra blinks a few times, a bit taken aback by the large feline at the table, but then she seems to take it in stride and orders another mug of ale.

"If the words are sung, then I'm not too bad with them. Other than that, I tend to just hit things until they are more reasonable."

Aeliana makes a small nod towards Rona's question and gives Voltaire a quick rub behind the ear, but then slightly glares at his filthy paws so rudely on the table. He removes them swiftly but keeps upright to remain a part of the conversation.

At Baolus' recollection, Aeliana turned to face him. She had fought with so many bandits, thieves, and really anyone who would dare plague her home with their evil, she had a difficult time remembering this particular incident. She panicked for fear of upsetting him, but did not let those emotions surface. She remained poised as she gave the first thing that came to mind.

"Thanks is never necessary. I merely do what I can to rid the world of its poison."

The mention of drink she avoids completely. For one must remain vigilant at all times to ensure survival, however, now is the time for merriment with new-found comrades and in no way does she desire to be rude to one of them. The inner struggle remained hardly detectable through her stoic and stern facade as she settled on merely sipping throughout the event and maintaining a watchful eye on the other customers in the vicinity.

Once you all seem finished with your meals, the servers come and quickly and efficiently clear your empty plates, bowls, and cups. Once they are done they start to give you subtle cues that if you aren't ordering more, you should clear the table and head back to your respective rooms. They are not impolite, but the place is busy and they obviously want the table for new customers.

I let the waitress clear the table and smile before heading to the bard and giving her golden sail as a tip (1GP) I then head outside for a breath of fresh air; which brings back memories of Westcrown, and lean against the wall next to the door. I stay here watching and thinking for about 15 minutes before heading back to my room.

I sit on the small chair by the table and look at the bed, "As if I am meant to be able to sleep now, it has just gotten dark! Maybe I should go for a walk around the town?"

Phaedra will politely bid her new companions a good night after stating that she will be back down at dawn for breakfast.

Then she will retire to her room, make herself ready for bed and fall fast asleep until the sun rises.

Let me know if there is anything else you want to do tonight. If not, assuming you all sleep in the inn, the evening passes uneventfully and you can let me know what you'd like to get up to in the morning.

Following Rona's lead, Baolus also leaves the table and follows him outside. Instead of just look at the stars like the elf, Baolus takes a pipe and some herbs from his coat. He lights it up and rests his back against the tavern's wall, quite enjoying the moment.

With his pipe empty, he them gets up and walks to his room.

Ihon eventually retires for the evening, going straight to his room. He wakes early and descends down to the common room for breakfast. The reptile companion is curled up on the bench next to him, seemingly uninterested in being awake at this early hour.

As Baolus comes outside too I give him a small nod and bid him good night when he goes back in. I try to sleep during the night, but old habits die hard and after a couple of hours I give up and go for a little walk, although half way through it turns into a run. I get back to the inn about an hour later and try to fall asleep again, this time succeeding.

I wake up just after sunrise with a big yawn, "Hmm, not right ... it'll take a while to get used to this." I give myself a wash and dress myself in my uniform again, making sure that it is clean. I then strap my weapons on and head downstairs to eat some breakfast. Seeing the quiet one at the table I head over to the bar and smile at the waitress again, "Morning, could I have a nice big breakfast and a pot of spiced green tea please?"

I then go and seat myself at the table with Ihon and nod to him, still a little groggy, the familiar aches from the run during the night bring a smile to my face. "Good morning, did you sleep well sir?" I am rubbing my shoulder as the food arrives and I thank the waitress for it and pour myself a drink before starting on the food.

The inn is substantially less busy in the morning and those patrons that are present seems varying levels of exhausted. The wait staff will serve you whatever it is that you request, though they are still clearly focused on cleaning up from the night before; the rush clearly seems to have gone on for quite a bit of time after the lot of you headed to bed.

As a reminder, Kintargo has all of the modern amenities of a port city. Buying just about anything is possible, so feel free to go shopping if you decide there is something else you need to accomplish your goals. Being unable to find torches to buy is not part of the plot. At least not yet...

Ihon continues to wait patiently. He has nothing left to buy. And nothing left to do but wait.

Hungover from a night of politicizing with the local townsfolk, Esken approaches the group, his eyes trying to find sanctum from the morning sun.

I couldn't do it Ihon, I could have used your help last night on the quest of depleting the town's mead supply.

After patting himself down to ensure all of his valuables are still with him, he leans against the wall in anticipation of the rest of the team.

Believe or not... I could have sworn there was a giant panther among us yesterday.

Baolus woke up in a comfortable bad and lingered there for a couple of minutes before preparing himself to breakfast. Unlike many of the trackers out there, Baolus really enjoyed the city life and was used to cherish and enjoy every moment within a city.

Baolus sat down again with the elf and made a gesture to the waitress.

"Girl, could you bring me breakfast please? And a cup of strong coffee if you have." He then looks around, pausing at the wizard.

"You should start to live man... you are not a statue after all... I guess..."

Phaedra finishes up her breakfast and begins to gather up her belongings.

"Well, I don't think I could manage to eat anything else. If everyone else is just as full, we should go ahead and get moving for the day. We can swing by the market place as we make our way out of the city in case anyone has forgotten anything needed for a trip in the woods."

Ihon smiles as Esken complains, The cat was not that big. He waits quietly as the others eat their breakfast, shrugging slightly as Baolus speaks, though he doesn't respond.

When Phaedra indicates they should start, he picks up his backpack and throws it over a shoulder. Reaching down he pokes his small companion gently. The reptile opens one eye, then the other. Its head bobs up to look around and then it hops up on the bench, almost like a bird. After blinking quickly it realizes where it is and scrambles up Ihon's arm on to his shoulder where is curls up and makes itself comfortable.

Aeliana shifts uncomfortably at the breakfast table. She hadn't slept well the night before thinking about the city she has found herself in and what new secrets it may hold or new knowledge to discover. She had no need for anything in particular but she wanted more than anything to just run wildly about the streets, getting fully immersed, and taking her time just enjoying the people or shops. However, there was a mission to accomplish and there no time for playing. She would just have to settle for getting excited about the journey ahead.

Voltaire reenters the inn, as if on cue, after spending his morning chasing after his own breakfast. Aeliana sets down a bowl of water that he laps up greedily.

"We are ready when you are."

Let me know where you are planning on heading. Getting straight to the forest is about a 70 mile journey. Walking at a base speed of 30, that means the trip will take just under 3 days of travel. Not that I'm planning on skipping over the days in between, but just giving you an idea of the trip schedule in case you want to plan accordingly =)

Can I ask what time of year? Just wondering if we need any snow gear.

Ihon lifts his pouch and shakes it. Is there a town near the woods where we'll be able to get more supplies? I should bring more food... He says absently.

I finish my meal and pour myself another cup of tea as everyone discusses what to do next, I turn my attention to both animals briefly when they make themselves known but don't say anything. I finish my drink and thank the waitress once again. I place another Sail on the tray as she takes it away.

I look to the others and speak up quietly, "I went for a little walk and run last night, so I think I know how the weather will be responding today."

"Well, none of us have horses, and since stealing them are out of question..." Baolus looked around the assembled people, just to make sure everyone understood that stealing was indeed not a possibility. "... We have few options. We could try to talk to the officers and perhaps they would lend us a couple horses, since we are working for the crown. Other option would be we combine our small funds and by a packing mule... it will not speed our travel, but it'll allow for us to carry all the supplies we need."

Baolus looks at Ihon before continuing.

"I do not recall hearing about any village nearby, but it is not unlikely. Food is not a big problem, since me and Aeliana could easily hunt."

It is essentially fall. So no cold weather gear necessary. As for towns near the woods, you guys can give me a Knowledge (Geography) or can go looking for a map to buy.

Rona, you are pretty sure that the weather will be clear with slight cloud cover for the next day.

You are all aware that there is not a well-traveled road to the forest, but have heard that there are priests and rangers of Erastil that are the most well known occupants of the area.

I glance over the group, "Well, I can tell you that it won't be raining today, quite a clear day actually apart from a few clouds."

I head up to my room quickly and get all of my gear before returning to the group, I look at Balous. "A pack mule sounds like a good idea, but while we are at that, we should try to work out a formation that works well for us. The last thing we want is to be ambushed on the way."
