On 'true' hive worlds a single hive can hold 10-100 billion people. As this is not a 'true' hive planet these hives probably only have 100 million people, a billion at tops. If the people there are sympathetic to this four armed emperor as they are up in Maxarpa, and the duke starts handing out rifles then you could be looking at potentially millions of combatants.
Even if he doesn't you'll still have to deal with underhive gangs (which sometimes end up with things like lascannons... somehow), noble families and their weirdly extensive 'security forces' which are more akin to private armies in their own right, and how ever many regiments the duke can move by air to his own space port at the same time.
If you want to stick your foot in that without artillery or armored/mechanized support first go ahead, but can we at least get engineers down to start work on the starport first? I may even get it done sooner if the nobles of Maxarpa chip in.

I want you all to know that I find this discussion nothing short of fascinating. Really. I'm having a wondrous time going through this with all of you.
Now, I don't have time to put this properly, but I'd feel bad if I at least didn't say a little something about it.
Jene brings up a good point, and I just wanted to touch on that quick. Hence, yes, this is a game, and we know little to nothing about our opponent...but that's not the interesting thing.
The interesting thing is how all of us talking reminds me of my other favorite war: The American Revolution.
The 13 colonies threw together people who had, literally, no military training or knowledge, just ordinary people like you and me, and took on what could accurately be described as the world's greatest superpower (remember the phrase "The sun never sets on the British Empire"? That was accurate in the 1700's) and still somehow stumbled to victory.
Of course this scenario bares little resemblance to that one, but it's still a deeply interesting experience to throw otherwise "normal" people together, get them talking, and see how they would prosecute a war.
(P.S. A troll might find this post condescending. Do not take it so. I'm honestly trying to pay you a compliment for walking down this road.)
Jene "the Genie" Rodriguez |
I'm a pretty genie, not a troll!
Actually, I'm a 46 year old male, married, father of two. No military service (you can probably tell), though have the highest regard for all ranks and branches of legit military, US and global.
I recommend a book, Damn Few the making of the modern warrior by Rorke Denver.
Jene was a pre-gen for an 11th Hour scenario I played in a bit... I've recast her for Rogue Trader and now this.
I like to think of my characters, all 30 or so aliases as "the un-cola".
The dhampir paladin, the rogue taking over the guild to support the government, the outcast/unrecognized prince of Qadira building a pirate fleet for a homecoming, the brute savant, and Jene.
She is purposefully (character and player) offering other than the standard approach. Out of the Bottle, thinking.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it.
At this point the biggest issue I have is zero energy (as in, I sat down on the floor in the lobby this morning to wait until I felt ready to go upstairs to my apartment, and fell asleep) so it might take me a little longer but it's something I want to do.
Very flattered with the earlier comments from Arvitus and Rodriguez; thanks for coming on this journey with me, everyone.
General Kimes |
I know kinda what I want to do... and, spoiler alert, it involves a bit of profanity aimed at you Arvitus (it's all in character and, hopefully, in good humor). But I don't like spam posting... Since I was the post before the GM's post... could someone else go so I feel less paranoid about posting again myself?
No I'm not paranoid, what would make you think that? have you been watching me? What's with the sudden interest anyways? ARe you with the government?
I'm watching you
>.>
General Kimes |
got to sleep in... got bored of waiting for others to post first... so I went ahead and did so. Besides, classes start again tomorrow for me so might be busy.
btw, forgot to mention (because I was hungry at time of writing and my pizza was still in the microwave, and too lazy to edit in now) going to try and form a perimeter around he Administratum building we claimed as a medical facility, naval battalion is.. not under my control but should probably avoid contact. Don't know how well equipped they are in terms of weaponry.
General Kimes |
Not especially, though they have a few security teams. I'll assume you got that out before you shut down your comms network and turned all vox sets to blast out interference.
Sounds good
Also, I have this sudden desire to turn the Fleet's Voxcasters on the planet, crank them up to 11 and see if I can make the local force's radios melt....
General Kimes |
Guess everyone is still recovering from easter...
anyways, I was wondering if there was more detail to be had on the 'minerals in ground and tree's cause interference' thing. Because my current understanding is that it works kinda like Florescent objects, only on a much lower wavelength. Basically, the minerals absorb radio waves and re-transmit them at a lower frequency, turning the energy difference into heat. So the Rebels are using a higher frequency radio wave for communication, causing the trees and minerals to 'glow' on our channels, generating static. It's basically how glow-in-the-dark things work, only with radio instead of visual light.
Assuming this is correct, there are several interesting implications:
-First off, powerful enough radio signals can noticeably heat up the trees as the re-transmitted signals are of lower energy than the absorbed ones. In every day life this means a particularly strong solar flare which hits the atmosphere and generates an EMP can cause forest fires. If we can replicate this we can do the same, not really useful but fun to think about turning a Vox array into a death laser.
-More usefully we may be able to generate a 'rebel radar' deal, the basic version being little more than a radio designed to pick up the 'glow' from rebel transmissions in the trees. Said glow will be across a much wider set of radio bands and easier to pick up than the transmissions themselves. A more advanced version, which we likely don't have the time or ability to produce, could locate enemy communications from orbit by looking for the 'glowing' trees or plants with a wide band radar.
-Finally, and most amusingly, these minerals likely have infiltrated the biology of the locals to some extent. Probably just from the occasional salad or local grown meat. Meaning, in theory, we could locate people from long distance with a radio pulse than listening for the resulting 'glow' from the locals. I doubt the minerals are present in sufficient quantities, or effective enough for the 'death laser vox' from point one to matter. By the time the radio waves are strong enough to set the person on fire, the radio waves would have killed the person anyways.
BlindKitsune |
That's... a lot more clever insight than I had, to say the least.
At first glance it all seems to hold together well, but I'd like to think it over and consider any other implications before I give it the nod and risk having orbital vox arrays igniting locals on the ground. ;)
That's excellent reasoning though, and thank you very much for sharing it with me.

I'm a sci-fi nerd, finding small overlooked details and over-analyzing the s#@@ of them is what I do best.
Inothernews, would it be possible to get a 'unit status' thing on the campaign info page? Like a unit which has seen combat, but hasn't taken too many losses is 'bloodied' or something. Just something to tell how combat effective they are.
BlindKitsune |
I could probably do that.
I've been keeping a running tally on everything's effective strength so that when players check (like you did with your Warhawks) I have an answer I can give, but I could give more abstract impressions regularly on the campaign info tab.
It... may prove to be a moot point though as we seem to have lost most of our players over Easter.
I'll give it till the weekend, but if it's just you, I and a fairly terse O'hern then I will probably pull down the curtain.
BlindKitsune |
We may have lost Firmianus, so if you could take over air/space operations from the ground it would be good.
I'm hoping we haven't lost Arvitus as well, or Jene - otherwise we might have to look at dividing the different sectors among remaining players, and possibly trying to recruit a few more.
Luckily our pet traitor won't be escaping me any time soon.
Besides, he thinks he's winning. ^^

*heh* That last is from an anecdote about General "Stonewall" Jackson. A deeply religious man, he say on a horse observing the aftermath of one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war, and, while eating a peach, remarked to another, "God has been very kind to us this day."
Thaty may seem out of place today, but at the time casualties were all but unavoidable (much like city-fighting). And there's little debate that he was the most talented of all the civil war generals, so.... :)
BlindKitsune |
Welcome back everyone, it's good to see you here.
I'm not going to try to match you in american war history Arvitus, but I like that you're drawing some parallels here. ;)
At this point it looks like I should be able to push things forward tomorrow, but a few points I'd like to clarify:
1) What is Jene's Torton sector up to?
2) Confirming it's the Rough Riders that are being dropped today?
3) In view of the fact that many (most) commands were shorted in their supply yesterday and the supply dump was mostly drained down overnight to fix this, should today's supplies continue being landed in the same place (that is, the dump north of Maxarpa)?
Gauis Marcus Arvitus |
1) If Jene can pull back to Argent, I'll smash into Torton as soon as I get my Charybdis tomorrow. Best I can do.
2) I believe so, yes.
3) Doubtful. Maxarpa always was just a foothold, but now that we have an actual running SpacePort with 4 regiments securing it, and with Maxarpa receiving enemy action, that is no longer a secure spot for a supply dump. The SpacePort will also have proper facilities to house, store, and categorize a supply depot for future large-scale operations.
Also, thanks. ;-)
General Kimes |
I was actually requesting the 84rd line for today but whatever. I won't really argue with whatever is landed so long as it comes down at Maxarpa
and 3) I do not feel comfortable dropping supplies into an enemy held city. Somehow I think they still have a silly number of anti-air defenses. While the port itself may be under our control I would rather not risk our transports by flying them into an enemy held city.
Marshal Lucien Bron Yorke |
Rough Riders being dropped, yes. However... I just realized that Sword-class frigates use Macro-cannons, not lances... That would have been Firestorms. So take my post as asking for macro-cannon fire instead of lance battery fire please!
1) Up to Jene there.
2) I thought we had multiple landers to drop troops, and that Kimes was getting the 84th, while I get the Rough riders. Otherwise I'd say that the 84th should get priority there.
3) I'm actually thinking that if Torton is secure, we should drop supplies there, and Jene can bring them over to Arvitus then.
BlindKitsune |
I'm writing up the update now, but I noticed we don't yet have a consensus on where today's supplies are being landed. Unless I hear otherwise I'll assume we're going with landing the 84th and the Rough Riders (and hence, no more supplies).
However while units can live off the land for some time, combat efficiency is likely to drop - still more as Imperial units run out of munitions.
General Kimes |
I believe we should land supplies at Maxarpa, it should be mostly secure by the end of the day and there is little chance of AA fire. I don't think we need two regiments dropped again today.
If we are going for the double regiments thing, I'd like the 84th dropped to the west of the enemy formation attacking Maxarpa. If we are getting no more supplies than I do not want the enemy escaping. The rough riders can push them out of the city into a fresh regiment of line infantry.
Also, assuming we go with another double drop today we should drop pure supplies tomorrow, no regiments, to get all units on the ground back up to 100% on their supplies.
