Finite Floors

"A noise... A gibbering... A whispering perhaps?... It lurks inside the darkest manifolds of this space... Where it sits... It waits... Is it waiting though?... What is it?... Where does it wait?... What is this place?... ... Can't I remember?... Barely... Almost... It is beyond myself though... For awhile... No, forever... I'm not getting better... My strength isn't returning... I don't think it will... I feel lost... It feels it too I suppose... How long will this last?... What is this place?... Is no one here?... Is that why i go unanswered?... ... ... No one is here... I am... Must I be?... It seems so... There is nothing... ... Nothing... Nothing... Nothing... ... ... Nothing?... Something... There's something... I am not left alone... I have my conjurations... My powers... Yes... Let's see what more I can do with them... More?... Was there something before?... What have I ever done?... ... There is still whispering... It sits and waits... Waiting... Waiting... Here... Here?... ... ... What is this place?...

The air is calm, the darkness soothing; a floor of starlight is lifting past your feet. A relaxing warmth scurries past your legs now surrounding your waist and soon gripping your shoulders. Your head is pulled under. Your cold now. Drowning in that which just brought you comfort. And suddenly, you break the surface.

A dim light escapes from beneath a coupling of doors to the front of you, illuminating a landing giving an escape from the cold, black waters. As you pull yourself ashore, 6 others find the same ground safe stone indeed, breathing heavily with shivers. As you seven acclimate to the warm air, the double-doors are thrown open. An elven woman wearing a black Evening-Gown steps forward. Her hair is crimson, complexion tan, and besetting her green eyes are silver rimmed spectacles.

She passes a few glances around at every person to have climbed up from the black waters. Speaking quietly she says,"Hmm, quite a few more than usual... Hasn't happened in a while. But whatever, we have the rooms." She then enunciates herself, speaking a little louder this time. "You may all find yourself in a place estrange from your usual locality. If not now, then hopefully quite soon. I know that you all are still in quite shaken conditions, so I will not bring everything there is to know at once, rather in just smaller tidbits to absorb. The first thing is my name, Anna. At least that is what you can call me. The second thing is that many of your usual belongings are missing."

As she says the words, you see this to be true. Nothing from your usual backpacked assortment seems to be bundled with you right now. "The only thing you will find in place of it will be a small item. It could be something you've known or never have. Regardless, these items we call Greypieces around these parts for their darker contrasts betray the brightness they once had. Keep these close. They will prove most useful but, lets not bog all that on you now. For now though, familiarize yourself with those at hand. They will come in handy when you least expect or even betray you in those same circumstances. Regardless make 'friends' now rather than 'enemies' later. Once you feel comfortable to proceed, come with me. I will be waiting just outside." She begins to leave without a second glance, though when putting her first foot through the door she calls back to everyone, "Have no worries about your misplaced equipment. It shall all be returned in due time." With that, Anna leaves the dark, watery structure.

Go ahead and take a bit to get acquainted. Feel free to give out as much or as small amounts of info about yourself that you want. When any of you feel like continuing, exit out the door.

Oh god, oh no, what's happening!?

Shellin's head sweeps around the room, over his companions, at the door, never truly resting his flustered eyes on any one thing

"Does anyone-" he yells out, immediately cutting himself off with a startled look and begins rifling through his pockets, and, with a sigh of relief, he pulls out a small metal figure.

After a few muttered words the figure begins to glow, illuminating the near drowned band in brighter light.

He calmly begins to speak, as if to himself, "That's better, now does anyone know what is happening!?" His words fade from the calm surety of spell casting and rise to near panic.

Also, would I count as having spells prepared?

Dwight shakes his head in confusion, "No... I don't know..."

He looks back and forth about him, looking at the others that are around, "Last thing I remember was me at the forge... and then a thing of darkness... took my life... then nothing. But I don't seem dead. What happened?"

Something dons on him and he looks distracted for a moment as he waves his arm in front of him. A a reddish fiery glow suffices his hand and the sound of a distant forge can be heard. A ghostly sword forms in the air in front of him just out of his reach. He then inspects it for a moment.

- If nothing is wrong with it, he heaves a sigh of relief and waves it away into mist.

- If something is wrong with it, he curses angrily and then waves it away into mist.

Basically whatever my GM humbly decides.

Either way, he turns back to the others and says, "What do you guys remember?"

The waterlogged dwarf gives a single soggy burp announcing the humanoids arrival and awakening. With that he glances around the new group with a frown and a hiss of irritation. "Great, not only does some magic elf sea-tart drag me here, she expects me to entertain." the Dwarf mutters with obvious intent to keep it to himself but the humanoids gravelly baritone voice projecting the noise to easily audible level. The Dwarf's short shorn beard crusted white with sea salt and brick-like physique cloaked only by salted sack cloth garb. The humanoid winces for a moment when the human activates his light but seems to grow accustomed to it after a moment.

"Don't know why i'm here. don't know why you're here. The Sea tart probably knows. Doubt she's gonna tell us with anything but twisty riddle words that don't make sense before they are useless." The dwarf steps with his left foot, jerks once and immediately retrieves a hexagonal rock with smooth worn edges from his foot before immediately hurling it into the water.
"Stupid rock." The stocky one grunts as he watches the stone skip off the water, smack against a wall and sinks.
The dwarf then patting down his pants pockets and turning them inside out looking for something other than his watery pocket lint "The hell is a 'grey piece' anyway? All I see is rubbish."

That one just shot me a glance . . . Why do I get the feeling I don't belong here?. . . Where's my ale? "I could use a drink." As he starts to get up, he puts pressure on his right hand and winces, squeezing his hand slowly into a fist he looks at it to see a raised scar in the shape of a shield. "That's new."

He looks up as the woman walks through the doors. Listening to her riddled words, he watches her leave. Pausing for a second he looks down at the dwarf, "Did she say she's got our stuff?" The 6'5" half-orc makes his way to the door. "That had better include my cask."

Just now realized this was up. Also, we're probably all naked now.

"AAARRRRR!!!" A brawny gray skinned devilish man roars as he grips what appears to be a shaft of pure light jutting straight out of his scarred and muscular chest. With a further grunt a distinctive wooden snap is heard as he breaks the arrow just outside of his flesh.

Tossing the shaft aside the light from it fades to reveal a pure white wooden rod fletched with golden feathers.

The wound bleeds lightly in black blood as the fiend takes in his surroundings with a calculating glare.

In a deep baritone he speaks. "Mortals? And this is neither the Boneyard nor Avernus. Peculiar."

Stepping through the water the man pushes past the rest and follows the elven woman outside.

The young man walks to the shore. He reflexively tidies his hair, which is wet and ocean blue in color. He's a bit puzzled, and looks around, only to notice the place he's in is unknown to him. What? This is definitely not the inn I remember staying at... Just where am I? he ponders while straightening his clothes. He notices he lacks the fine, fashionable garments he is used to. "Hey, who took my vest?" he says angrily. "That vest was a genuine Fabrizio! Cost me a fortune!"

He sees the people around him. A strange bunch. The vest can wait. I should probably first get things organized. he thinks to himself before introducing himself.

"Ah, hello everyone! My name is Koon Ezequiel. My friends call me Ez and so can you." He says that with a smile, but as his gaze turns to the brawny tiefling the smile dims a bit. We didn't have those back home. Doesn't seem hostile, and at least intelligent. Best keep my guard up anyway...

"Say, I got the idea that the lady has our belongings. Should we go after her and do as she says?"

Shellin:

Knowledge Local: It is immediately apparent to you that this hulk of a demonic entity is no demon, but that he is in fact a Tiefling. Varried are the many abilities tieflings can posses, though this one happens to be partially resistant to natural elements of cold, fire, and lightning, can run faster than the average man when he so chooses, and is in no way a blockhead despite what a large muscular structure would lead one to believe about someone humanoid.

Knowledge Religion: There is not much known to you about his garb, however his stature and posture relate to you a great deal of information. What it tells you? You believe him to be a well disciplined man. Maybe one of nobility, a man of war in high station, or even that he was once a slave beaten and berated to form such manner in his step. Which one of these is true or where he's from, you do not know.

AS Gurthok, Argus, Dwight, and Dench exit the Chamber, they begin to see there surroundings. As for Gordan, Shellin and Ez, they'll be following soon enough so might as well leave this open for them to see. No rush though.
The sky is not the blue (or red) that you remember it to be, nor is the horizon speckled with cities or forests or mountains or plains. Its rather now akin to the night sky; stars and moon both. Levitating amidst air, rock and dirt float away, or closer, above and below you in all directions. The building you were just in seems quite rudimentary; smoothed walls and hand-carved door. Leading away from the rock and dirt that you stand on is a wooden bridge connecting one earthy mass to another and another wooden bridge connecting that one to an even larger mass. The most spectacular thing laid before you lies on the largest of the three, furthest away from you. An immaculate tower of tremendous construction looms over the surroundings. At its base, a few destroyed walls catch your eye; their rubble laying about with new stone supports in there place. A floor up, a balcony encircles the level alit with lanterns on every other post. Beyond that are many innumerable chunks of tower and stone floating about. They're all a bit dislodged or broken from each other but hang together within few dozen meters. Far into the sky it goes, stopping just before it's tip was to cover the moon. You all feel quite weak and puny in the immensity of it all.

Anna stands just a few feet away, blushing a bit and steaming in her words. "Witch? Witch?! Don't call me that! Please, Never call me that! No!... J-just... Don't!" She turns away briskly, arms crossed against her chest. "My name is Anna. We've dilly-dallied for long enough! This way!" She begins walking across the first bridge. "I am to bring you to Vezan. He will explain why your here, show you your rooms, and give you your stuff back. So come, please."

Human Rogue 1

Somewhat earlier:

Gordon, a slight human, listened to the one called "Anna". Then he held back, seeing which way each of the others would go. Catching up to them, he says, "My names Gordon. I seem to have the worst luck. This isn't my first go round with being dumped someplace without my permission."

Then now:

Gordon will follow the group, always trying to maintain himself as unnoticeable as possible.

He follows Anna and Gurthock through the doors, pausing a moment to take in the unusual scene. He puts his hand on his chest reaching for something that's not there. Sighing he says a quiet prayer, and follows the woman. He doesn't pay much attention to her words as he's lost in his own thought.

This isn't right. I'm not supposed to be here . . .wherever here is. He glances at the group. And they know it, they keep looking over at me.

Ezequiel follows the mysterious woman and the even more mysterious group. The sight of the enormous tower leaves him speechless for a moment.

After the initial impression has gone, he races along the others, following the strange woman. He walks next to the dwarf and notifies quietly: "Seems that Ms. Anna has taken offense to your comment, Mr. Argus. You could refrain yourself from calling her a 'witch'." He then lowers his voice to a whisper. "She said 'our rooms'. You don't suppose that place is a prison of some kind, do you?"

Why else would they have taken our equipment? But they don't know I don't need a weapon to be deadly. If things get any worse from here I have the element of surprise. What is this place anyway?

Shellin:
Arcana for identifying where you are? That's mostly identifying spells and the such, like auras and magical materials and signs. Knowledge Planes is what your looking for, and I don't think you have a library right now to utilize to make it untrained... unless there's a miniature bag of holding somewhere that is ginormous on the inside.

Koon Ezequiel Mariano:
From the monument before you and scenery around it, you see that this plane is not of the many known; as in, it has not been named or heard of. Whether through obscurity or it being quite new, it has not been catalogued or ever traveled back from.

The elven woman, Anna, in time has lead you to a set of large ornate double doors. She knocks twice and begins stamping a foot, as if waiting impatiently. Beyond the door, though quite muffled, you believe you hear something slamming the floor above you, a person running, that person marching down some steps, and then tripping halfway down. Anna shakes her head slightly. Anna looks over at Argus. "Vezan is not our master, nor does he preside over anything but his own clumsiness. Though I fear the real master hasn't been around of late. Maybe its from the tower being in shambles?" One of the doors creaks open slightly; Anna turns to them and speaks "Guests".

Both double doors are slowly wrenched open and behind them is what you can assume to be Vezan; a thin human with lanky limbs, light-brown shaggy hair combed on one side, gruff 5-o'clock shadow on his face, and wearing quite the dusty and webbed vest, dress shirt and pants. He stands back up straight and gives a "whew" as he finishes pulling aside the doors. "Hello everybody!", he says in a below alto voice. He smiles, looking very happy with himself until he notices his clothes and tries to dust them off. Looking back at the party his smile now diminished and replaced by a serious demeanor, he gently bows. "I am Vezan, a caretaker of the tower. Just like Anna here, I too am here to welcome guests and get them acquainted. That includes answering any questions. But before your questions and your accommodations, first, the most obvious and most asked question should be answered. 'Why are you all here and how?' Well its rather simple but complicated if you object to it too much. Your all here because the 'master' Air Quotes has dragged you here to face his challenges." Vezan's voice gets a little bit quieter. "But this isn't any ordinary place you see. To get you here, he needed you to be dying and take you here before you kicked the bucket. Why that is, we don't know. Why he wants you to face these challenges, we don't know either. But he has told us if you complete them all, you will get to go back... alive and well." Vezan's voice picks back up. "So no worries, just defeat all his challenges and you'll be ok. Ok?"

Suddenly behind Vezan, the once dark space is brought to light. A large circular rune in the center of the chamber shines bright red; each of its points encompassed by a bluish crackling energy. In its center lies a something like a hemisphere of glass, much like water droplets on a coin. To the left, there is a staircase and against the room's far wall to the left looks to be a curved pool of water. Double doors are aligned like a compass' prominent NESW points in the room. Vezan jumps slightly and lets loose a yelp. He turns around and looks at the rune. "Alright already, Alright Already! Jeeze! He turns back at the party. "Well, the challenges are starting up and the first portal to it will be appearing sometime soon, but hey, that doesn't mean we have to rush. So, any questions? Anything at all? If I have the answers, I will answer them. After words I'll take you to your rooms and get you your stuff back."

"Not that cleaning will do much what with all that crap floating around."

Ezequiel listens in shock as the man claims that he, Koon Ezequiel Mariano, would have died. There's no way. He must be lying. I would definitely remember if I had died. No... I definitely would not have died in the first place, no matter the circumstances.

Vezan clears his throat and begins to answer each question.
Gurthok "You may certainly refuse to do anything but trying to leave without accomplishing the tasks is no easy feat. Try as you might, but I don't believe the master will let anyone leave until they are suitable to do something for him, or they complete his challenges. Both of which might be one and the same."

Shellin "That is another of the interesting questions we get asked. Some others who have been here have related how they died - became dying I mean. Most of them tell of a being of pure darkness rising from the shadows and dragging them into himself. If that were not of the master's doing, he an agent in his stead, I don't rightly know what that thing is doing and why its sending people here."

Dwight "No, but whatever is keeping you from returning must be magnificent. People, who would surely have been brought back other than completing the challenges have, only stayed here, awaiting resurrection and soon losing hope in the friends they trusted. So either they never had good friends or just can't go back by their own means."

Argus Vezan recoils slightly. "A 'challenge' is something much liiiikkkeeee.... Well?" He looks over at Anna and she takes the question. "A 'challenge' is something like a quest or even akin to a dungeon. It requires either great thought or assured skill but all take solid might to overcome the creatures and monsters that you will face. Just think of it like an adventure except with no issuer and no return payment. However, that's not to say the reward will be slight." Vezan speaks again. "Right, yes. And to the other half of that, we are forbidden from helping you. The master has given all caretakers orders that forbid our direct help or interference. As well, he has warned that an entity lurks here. We are also here in case of such circumstances, to keep the tower safe." Anna pipes back in. "And some of us here work very hard to keep the tower clean and repaired. We just had an accident recently... a pretty big one. But I'm sure you can see that from the state of the tower."

Koon "No, not really. Though, if your entire group dies, you can see for sure. With no one here to summon you back, who knows. You might be put back right before you did begin to die... or wake up dead."

Dench "Your here. Where else?" Anna slightly shakes her head and says, "I believe he was looking for a name." "Oh", Vezan says, "Well, your at Tower Bellight. If your wondering this place", Vezan gestures outward, "take your best guess and your probably still wrong. No one here knows what to call this place, non except for the master... probably."

Vezan and Anna fall silent and wait, Probably awaiting more questions or someone wanting to move on.

Shellin:
It is far more intricate and complex than many runes you have seen; it is beyond your understanding. Though, some of the etchings and how they're presented remind you of teleportation rituals involving much smaller symbols. You feel that it is strongly similar to one.

Shaking his head, "Well... I'm guessing none of us asked for this... but might as well play along for the time being. I'd like my stuff as well."

"Well, maybe we can provide hints... sometimes...", Vezan says. "And even then, It would only be in very special occasions or dire circumstances." He puts his hands on back of his head and starts ruffling his hair. "And finding people who here who know what the challenges are would be difficult as information can be misleading, from players and caretakers alike. Who knows what could have changed since the previous players or what the master is changing as you hear significant information."

koon, you can't summon your eidolin right now but can after you choose your room if you'd wish.

As everyone starts to become anxious for their belongings Anna walks inside with Vezan. She says, "If you think we've bided here for long enough, then come with us. We will show you your rooms and your belongings." Vezan and Anna begin to walk up the smooth stone stairs to the second floor. Second Floor is on the campaign tab. Walking onto the First Floor, you can feel the thrum & energy of the rune softly vibrating the ground as you ascend the stairs, Glowing light and dark again in waves, pulsating...

The second floor is far warmer than the first, now much more within comfortable temperatures. You can see sofas and armchairs arranged around an open furnace placed within the center of the circular chamber; a much simpler symbol extends from it as slow flames lick out with their wispy arms from within the etchings. The furnace has pipes which extend up into the convex ceiling. Some of the smaller pipes are bolted onto its surface and instead reach out into the walls. Others aren't connected to the furnace at all and hang with an end open to the floor.
On the southern wall, a what would have once been a structure lies in shambles with broken wood and shattered glass laying in its stead. A man in slightly different garment than Vezan is kneeling by the shambles, sorting the material in a few piles and occasionally getting up to sweep and sop up liquid thats pungent with alchol. The next set of stairs are perfectly fine halfway up. The other half of them though are smashed through with a singular large lump of stone, cleaving the upper section of the staircase in twane. It is far beyond use in its current state. Their are, again, 4 sets of doors lying on the prominent points of a compass.

Vezan and Anna stop near the top of the stairs. Anna clears her throat, "This is the lounge. Some of its functions are gone completely while others are undergoing recent repairs. You can come here to rest and hang out or plan out how to approach certain 'Challenges' if you have knowledge of them. The four sections the center are split into are protected by magic which prevents you voice from being heard outside of them." Vezan points to each of the double-doors. He says, "Beyond that, you all have waited long enough for your equipment. So this is how this works. Beyond those doors lie a few rooms. Simply choose one and all of your equipment will be stored within that rooms 'vault chamber'. Once you choose a room, you will no longer be able to change it without the help of one the towers fellow Caretakers which includes a small fee. But no worries, all the rooms should be symmetrical and in equal working order. Once you have gotten your stuff, come back and we will introduce you to a few more caretakers of the tower."
Post your room number in your next post.

When Ezequiel first sets foot on the second floor, his eyes widen in awe. Whoa. This is some structure. Even grander than what I had imagined from outside.

Ezequiel listens the two's explanation intently. From the sound of it, we'll be staying here for some time. If that's the case, the choice of rooms could be a very important one.

Asking the two instructors: "How much exactly is the fee to change rooms?"

He then looks at the others. "Since we all came here together, would it not be best that we choose rooms that are close to one another? I suggest we all pick rooms from one area, say, area A. Agreed?"

Male Half-Orc Cleric 1 (Barbarian VMC): [HP:11/11] [AC:15 T:10 F:15] [ Fort +6, Ref +2, Will +7] [Init:+0, Percep:+3]

Dench follows the group up to the second floor.

What happened here? They said they had an "accident." What sort of accident causes this much destruction on a structure like this.

Looking over at Anna, "How do we know when we'll be summoned for one of your "challenges?" How much time will we get to prepare?"

Human Rogue 1

"Area A sounds good. If all the rooms are the same, why don't we just dole them out randomly?"

I can't see files from here. You might try to put them into Google Draw, since I can see those behind the firewall.

Argus looks at the damaged staircase and back to the pair of caretakers. "Doubt i'll be interested in hanging about in a place where boulders can drop out of the sky and crush me. Dunno what kind of "Accident" you are skipping over but it takes quite a lot to destroy a solid stone set of stairs like that."
With that the dwarf walks off to find a room muttering as he does
"Makes me jump through hoops like some circus animal..."

Argus will pick a room on Hall A with a working connection to the furnace. Starting on the left and working around til he finds one. (A3 would be the first room he looks in.)

Shellin merely glances around the room, until mention of returned equipment draws his attention.

He follows Argus, looking for a room himself, and notes he is looking from room to room.

He stops a moment and says

Dwarven:
"If you don't mind my asking, what are you searching for?"

Argus glances over to the human speaking his language. "A room with one of those heat pipes that actually connects. Preferably one under a load bearing portion of thw building less likely to fall the @#$# over like the rest of this heap."

Shellin smiles back to the dwarf.
Well, at least its more than the previous verbal slap to the face!

Dwarven:
"Fair enough, let me know if you find any weak spots while you're looking! I'd try to hold you longer while I have you so talkative, in comparison to earlier, but I need to take care of something before this challenge business"

Shellin will proceed to his room, and begin searching for his spellbook

Male Dwarf Zen archer monk 1 HP9/9 AC16/16/14 Init:+2 Perception:+8(+10stonecunning), Fort:+4Ref+5Will+6(+3vs spell/SLA/Psn)

"Talkative?" The dwarf parrots quizzically as he decides on a room. Giving the human a confused glance. The Dwarf waiting a beat before griping as he walks away form the human "Answer a damn question and get nothing but grief for it."

Argus is looking for such things but his native Dwarven Stonecunning should grant him an automatic check for most dangers relating to stonework. Adding his stonecunning bonus that's a +10 to perception. +8 without the bonus. Hopefully this results in the Dwarf finding a room he considers to be on safe ground and has heat. Or he can climb that broken staircase once he gets his gear and go sleep on the roof or something.

Dwight starts looking at rooms, "Hm... I don't suppose any of the rooms has a forge or fire place at least... I guess I could use the fireplace in the commons if need be... Might ask em about it later."

He'll take a12. He's used to being around people and would want quick access to them should the need arise, but likes some peace when forging or repairing weapons.

Also... I really don't suppose that he would have a "porta-forge" in his room at the moment, but is there anyway I could get one? If not, then I'll make due, if yes, then I'll start asking questions in character about it.

After selecting his room, Dwight will go see the others and talk to them in turn, "I Don't know if ya heard about the House of the HollowForge, but if ya haven't, we are a family of smiths. Forge all sorts of things, though I specialize in weapons. If you need something repaired or something made, once I get a working forge... if I get one, then you can come to me... Though I'm sorry what my "skills" might do to the appearance of your implements of battle, I'll make sure they are in working order," he pauses a second and looks around, " I'm not sure about you fellows, but I don't trust the "residents" of this place... and I don't know if you would want to be trusting them with your possessions. Especially after what their master did to us."

I guess if the GM wants to, he can set a DC for finding out who the Hollowforges are, or make it so you guys already know... or you can simply ask Dwight...
