Finding The Fall: Moral Decay in Taldor (Inactive)

Game Master Molech

A few goodly adventurers in the Duchy of Mulcrow in Taldor, though they begin their tale fighting for justice, benevolence, righteousness and tolerance, are doomed to become tainted and jaded through their ambitious adventures, only to tragically find that they have Fallen from grace into depravity, nefariousness, and villainy.

It's mid Spring in the Taldoran village of Griffondale, part of the Duchy of Mulcrow, and a few more travelers than usual bustle through the small, open-air market next to the Tell-Tale Tavern.

Griffondale is watered from two wells, a large one in the small market (from a spring) and another about 100 meters outside the small cluster of wood-framed buildings.

Most of the 150 or so adult members of the community tend the vineyards or the fields or the cows, providing wine, cheese and pastry for themselves and for trade with the rest of the Duchy.

The Scarlet Knight, Baron of Grffondale and a modest handful of miles surrounding it, lives in a small Keep only 50 meters from the Tell-Tale Tavern. Despite being somewhat secretive and almost reclusive at times, he is more than fair regarding taxes and personally defends threats that come to the village.

The Ducal Seat, Grenwald Castle lies nearby to the east 28 miles away. Meanwhile, the large port city, Cassomir, lies 45 miles to the west, half of that distance being the notorious Blackwood Swamp.

- - - -

Rumors of "little blue devils, probably a threat from Cheliax -- seen in the wild Verduran 50 miles north" have run rampant over the past few days, reaching both Cassomir and Grenwald Castle.

Meanwhile, two recent disappearances have fueled the flames of rumor: a young grape arborist vanished from the vines and a younger baker's apprentice is gone as well.

The villagers, ever pacifistic in temperament, show grave concern and a touch of fear, but no gumption to do anything about it themselves. (Should threats come here and bruise some grapes, The Scarlet Knight will surely kill them.)

But among some of the travelers to Griffondale, the ones not here as merchants at the end of a rough winter, the motivation to investigate, or maybe even seek-and-destroy, has brought them to Griffondale.

It is late morning.

Having roused herself some hour or so ago, Terra finally felt ready to face the day. She has donned a black silk outfit that snugs at her hips and chest, a slit from neck to navel that is covered with a very sheer yellow silk, doing little to hide what is there. A black skirt flares from her hips and reaches to a few inches below her knees with a slit down each side for mobility and a pair of knee high black leather boots. She wears her holy symbol around her neck hanging in the middle of her chest, and a black leather whip at her hip. Her hair hangs down to her lower back and is worn loose, her eyes a golden glow as she ignores the stares she inevitably attracts.

She walks to a chair and has a seat, crossing her legs at the knee, and waves down a server, "I'd like some sausage or ham if possible, a glass of fruit juice, and...hm...ah yes, a couple of biscuits with butter. If you don't have those then the closest equivalent is fine." As she waits she surveys the room for any new arrivals.

A soft warm breeze caressed his cheeks, causing his long golden hair to stir around his shoulders, as he stared down in tothe village. He sat atop Valour, his tall pure white stallion, at the edge of the village, sunlight glinting off of his highly polished armour. 'So this is Griffondale? Beautiful, truly beautiful...'

He shifted slightly in his saddle, his hand tightening on the wrapped grip of his lance. He paused, looking up at the pennant attached towards the top of the lance. The pennant displayed a Dragon, standing rampant on a field of royal blue and emblazoned atop it a Sunburst, the symbol of Sarenrae. He took a deep cleansing breath, flexing his pure white wings out around him, stretching and breaking in to a slow grin, feeling the warmth of the sun upon his face. 'The Dawnflower blesses my passing!'

He spurred Valour in to a brisk trot, tightening a hand on the reins, using his knees more than anything to steer the well trained warhorse. As he trotted down in to the village, he began to hum to himself, nodding to the men and women he passed. He wound his way towards the inn stopping outside and staring up at the sign. The Tell-Tale Tavern was the name, and he hoped it would live up to it. He was here hunting tales of little blue devils, surely a Chelaxian play once again.

As a young man ran over to stable Valour, Aerodus shook his head, before sliding down off of the horse. "Ill see to it myself dear boy, just show me to the stable!" The boy bowed and gestured for Aerodus to follow, only staring at his thick white wings momentarily. As the boy showed him to the stable, he smiled before handing him a gold piece. "May the Dawn bless you lad!"

He worked in silence, unsaddling Valour and leading him to one of the stalls that the boy had prepared before closing the door behind him. He patted the stallion on the neck, before whispering for only the horse to hear, "Behave and I'll bring you some apples. Misbehave and I'll mix codliver oil in with your oats!" Valour glared at him, as much as a horse can, before snorting and turning away. Aerodus laughed softly and tossedhis saddlebags over his shoulder, being careful to leave a clean draw for his Greatsword. He grabbed the lance as he left.

As he pushed in to the cool interior of the Inn, he paused, looking around for a moment, before he smiled, tilting his head quizically. "Terra? By the Dawn it is you..." He laughed before strolling over to her table. He ordered some water from the waiter as he set down his gear close to the table. "You are a sight to behold, as always, as lovely as the Dawn. What brings you to this village?" He smiled, before gesturing towards the seat, inquiring as to whether he could join her.

Biscuits! Bah, are we in Andoran?! I shall give you de best pastry in Western Taldor, made right here from my cousin Francois Vareille. And to clean de palate, some "juice," as you call it, from my ex-wife's family vines -- it is a fresh, fruity white, almost a dessert wine.

Belle, please get this distinguished Lady her morning sup...
Now please excuse me, Dear, I must speak to my friend about other matters...
Clovis, come my friend!

With a smile surrounded by sanguine cheeks, a middle-aged Jean Claude leaves you in the care of a young teenage girl, rather unattractive and plain with a conspicuous blemish on her forehead, as such ugly birthmarks are often named. Despite her homeliness, Belle turns out to be both friendly and articulate though uneducated, and brings you your pastry and a carafe of white wine to go with a small piece of ham.

Jean-Claude, meanwhile, walks away and discusses something in private with a dark man with a very nice crossbow, presumably Clovis.

Jean Claude either does not recognize what Holy Symbol you wear or is very good at pretending; there is no recognition of Calistria.

In addition to Jean Claude, Clovis and Belle, there are several others either in the Tell Tale Tavern or just outside in the open-air market. The Tell Tale Tavern, of course, has French Windows so there is much sunlight in the tap room, providing a panoramic view of the outside.

A young woman, late teens or early twenties, with shining armor, silver and red fabrics and flying the Star Order's Banner fits perfectly with with the iconic Taldoran Knight from stories. The young knight steadily wades her armored steed through the open air market stopping to talk to anyone curious or kind enough to speak with her or compliment the magnificent horse. She cradles her houndskull bascinet in one arm and holds her lance in the other hand propped inside the lance rest, as she drums up discussion on the disappearances.

Then she sees the wings of Aerodus, 'It couldn't be! Could it?' she doubts her own eyes as she politely dismisses herself from a man and his son that had stopped to admire the strength of her steed. The young knight makes her way to the edge of the tavern, just moments after Aerodus approaches a beautiful woman 'Another aasimar? Do they know one another?' She can't help fight the urge to widely smile at the site of Aerodus, but she is too afraid to call out and interrupt. 'Oh by the gods! What if that is his lover?! Its too late, I can't run now, how awkward that would be!'

The young knight just sets there, a dozen feet from Aerodus and the woman... just smiling.

In the early light of the morning, a young woman in a suit of off green leathers, with a shirt of chain, enters the village with an unusual companion. She smiles a friendly greeting to any that note her as she makes her way to the inn.

Her companion was a four legged beast, bulking the same as a large man, but shorter, squatter.

looks like this image

When she approaches the Inn, the stable boy comes out, and stops short, not certain what to make of the beast. Aliesah smiles at him and says, while patting the grey hide of the creature,

Worry not lad, Cutie will not harm your. She is a kindly beast, for the most part. Just give her a generous amount of fodder and plenty of water, and don't bother grooming her.

She flips the lad a silver piece for his time which he catches with an answering smile. Yes miss. What is her name?

Cutie Turning to Cutie she says

sylvan:
Now behave yourself girl. And no bothering the other creatures

Cutie gives out a sigh, and goes to her meal.

After making sure cutie was squared away, aliesah entered the inn. She was a tall lass, 5'10 or so, a longbow over one shoulder, a pair of quivers over the other and a pack between. A longsword was on her hip, and on her arm was a armband, brown with a green tree on it showing that she was a forester. Her blond hair accented her open face as she looked around the room. Suddenly a large smile blossomed on her face as she saw someone she recognized.

Aerodus, is that you. It has been awhile. Do you mind if I join you?

She moved with an easy grace over to the table as she spoke, passing a young knight who was just standing there. looking at the standing, oddly smilling knight, and the lady next to aerodus, she said Well met, my friend. It has been a long time since we hunted owlbears together. Would you introduce your friends?

Oh, yes, ah... welcome to Griffondale. I am Hugo and this is my son, Hugo. Your steed is quite remarkable; my son and I were staring, I'm afraid.

The boy, age 10/11, poorly whispering in earnest to Hugo Tirard:

Aerodus laughed softly and shook his head before taking a seat. He waited politely for Terra to finish eating her mouthful, before he began to speak. "I too heard the news about the troubles and decided to venture hence. Turns out it was lucky I did. I am glad to see you again. Taldor is treating you well I see. As for how I am," He paused, shrugging elegantly, even confined in his Armour as he was. "I am perfect, beyond. I have traveled far and wide since we parted and met many an interesting person. The Dawnflower blesses me!"

He smiled and was about to continue, when someone said his name. He looked up, frowning slightly in confusion before a mixture of happiness and surprise crosses his face.

"Aliesah! Of course, come join us. I am sure the Lady Terra will have no objections. And by the Dawn, Wulfrun when did you arrive?" He stood up as Aliesah reached the table, pulling her in to a one armed hug, as he reached out and pulled Wulfrun in under the other arm. Laughing he turned, steering all three of them to stand before the table, framed as they were by his white feathery wings.

"Lady Terra Minora may I present Lady Wulfrun Taverner of the Order of the Star a Chevalier of no small skill!" He smiled, releasing Wulfrun, and stepping to the other side of Aliesah.

"Lady Wulfrun Taverner, may I present Lady Aliesah Leafborn, a devotee of Erastil and the finest Hunter I have ever known!" He stepped away again, moving to behind Terra, placing a hand lightly on her shoulder.

"Lady Aliesah Leafborn, may I present Lady Terra Minora, even devoted hand of the beauty of the gods, Calistria and one of the bravest people I have met on my travels!"

He smiled, moving back to his chair, before gesturing everybody to sit. "Now that we are all acquainted let us sit and eat and speak of little things, it is, after all, not every day I get to dine with a bevy of beauties such as I find myself in the company of now. Gregary strides through the town square on the way from his family's grape orchard - The Crowley House owns one or two of the grape-producing orchards in the town, and Gregary had been sent to inspect it. It turns out that all was well, that their production had increased by 7% over the course of the last year, and that the money they were making the family was more than enough to cover the costs.

Gregary was tall, lithe, and good-looking, with pleasing but severe facial bone structure and toned but thin arms. He wears a tasselled blue coat over a white collared shirt and dark blue trousers on top of brown leather loafers. He has close-cropped blonde hair and blue eyes. A single sword rests across the back of his hips - the curve of its front edge identifies it as a falcata.

He's heard of the issues plaguing the town and frankly, he doesn't have anything that he needs to do when he goes back to Oppara, so he has no interest in doing so. While passing through the center of town, he catches a glimpse of the inside of it and the two gorgeous horses in there.

He harrumphes and heads into the stable, and that's when he catches the arsinotherum. "Huh." he says, beginning to stroke the horses' muzzles. "A rhino. Where did the rhino come from?"

When he returns, could you tell him I wish to speak with him?" He ssmiled, giving her an open and honest look, friendly and warming but not suggestive. "Merci!"

He turned to Aliesah as he reached for the wine, pouring for everyone before taking a goblet and rolling it lightly between his fingers, staring idly at the sweet liquid within. He nodded slightly and smiled as Aliesah spoke. "I am here for the same reasons as yourself, the blue devilS. Though that only piqued my interest, what secured it was the dissappearances. It is my experience that one missing implies bad luck, two missing implies foul play, especially in a settlement of this size!" He nodded and sighed, before taking a bite of food.

Terra smirks a bit as she realizes the serving girl has a bit of a crush on Aerodus but lets the child be. Turning to the group Terra begins to relate her first meeting with Aerodus for the group, "I met Aerodus few months ago as I first was preparing to return to Taldor. He saw my mentor and I speaking in an inn and asked to join us. He'd not seen many others of our kind and wanted to...what was that? Ah yes, compare notes. Anyway, he decided to accompany back towards Taldor and along the way we got involved in dealing with a corrupt mayor." Terra takes a sip of her wine and then continues, "Now personally, I don't see the problem with some corruption, it's going to happen, and if it's done right it can be a lot of fun."

Terra's expression turns rather dark, "This mayor was causing harm to the people who put their trust in him and he was deserving of more than a bit of vengeance. There were rumors of his doing any number of immoral things, including forcing women to service him or suffer." She begins laughing as she continues, "The poor bastard never saw it coming, it was priceless, while Aerodus was speaking with the council and his wife I was busy seducing him right in the middle of town after dark. When they finished their meeting and left I made sure to cry out loudly so they'd know where to find us. They rushed over, found me riding him, and the lot of them lost it, his wife nearly killed him. In the end his power was broken, his wife took the money and house and kicked him to the curb, and he lost his position as mayor."

As Wulfrun begins to describe how they had become acquainted, he smiled and dipped his head slightly, brushing off the comment as best he can. "Now now, no more of that. I did nothing. I had brought news to the Temple that was to send good strong men and women in to danger, what else could I do but put myself in the same situation?" He shook his head softly and took a sip of wine before picking up a piece of chees.

"If anyone deserves praise, it is you Wulfrun. You conducted yourself impeccably. I would never have known it was your first Campaign had you not mentioned it!" He smiled before popping the piece of cheese in to his mouth, as Terra began to speak.

He listened to her story and smiled, thinking back to the night in the village. He had been surprised by her suggestion on the best way to handle the situation with the Mayor, though surprised was not quite the word. Shocked maybe? Yes and a little scandalised and amused. They had gone with her plan never the less. And he had provided the distraction. That hadn't been too hard. He spent half of his time waffling about the Worldwound, some time talking about Cheliax and had ended up giving a lecture on the merits of worshipping the Dawnflower, an unpopular stance in Taldor. By the end of it two councilors were threatening to leave, one was asleep and he himself was only moments away from having the Mayors wife jump in to his lap. There had been a moment of rather uncomfortable foot placement under the table.

'And that is why a gentleman always wears a steel codpiece to dinner now!'

He laughed when the tale had ended and took a another sip of wine. "Again I did very little to ahm... rid the town of their Mayor. A most masterful play on your part that was too Terra. I applaud you!"

Raggo throws his hands up in half humorous half angry way and storms of to his table.

He takes a huge gulp the wine and swallows with only hint of scowl as he resists the urge to shout at the young girl.

"I just finished my time in the pits actually. Picked up young Wulf here right afterward."

Her cheeks going to scarlet, Belle manages the smoothest line she's heard from flirting adults to the handsome Aasimar,...
Um, Eric hayloft is, er, I mean- it's yes, I gotta go!
And Belle runs away to another table, getting an order of che
ese wrong as she's still a bit embarrassed.

Aasimars are merely uncommon.
Aasimars with wings -- talking to homely schoolgirls who've never been kissed...

Aerodus smiled, slightly bemusedly, at the retreating back of the young girl, before speaking. "I suppose that was a yes, in a way!" He smiled, shaking his head before turning back to the Dwarf.

"You best not be leading this young Knight astray Raggo, I left her and she had good manners and good grace!" He laughed jostling the Dwarfs shoulder playfully.

Poor Aerodus, he doesn't know what to do about the lovestruck teen!

Aliesah watches the arrivals and interactions with amusement.

I met Aerodus when we worked together to rid a village of an Owlbear nest. Savage creatures. Tracking them was easy enough, taking them out was...harder. Eventually found that a cultist of the unnamed one was behind it, tormenting them and driving them to attack. Still he's ash now.

When the barmaid confirms, sort of, the hayloft, she says I think I'll sleep in the hayloft as well. Cutie may get tetchy. Oh and well met Raggo.

Obviously enjoying Wulfen's attention, Terra replies, "My mentor had them made for me on our travels. They are well made, good quality, and very durable. Of particular interest is this." She slides a hand along the yellow fabric and then between it and the black then begins to work her hand around the edges. When she's done she pulls the yellow fabric out and drapes it around her neck like a scarf leaving the deep cutout now completely uncovered. She then takes the yellow fabric from her neck and puts it back inside the cutout, reattaching it. "It's a clever little setup, there are tiny clasps that hold the yellow in place and are backed with fabric so that they don't irritate my skin. Quite ingenious really."

With the arrival of the dwarf Terra can't help but comment, "Aerodus, you have been quite busy since we parted haven't you? Bringing me so many interesting people to meet. I didn't know you cared so much about my entertainment." When the girl arrives once more Terra tells her, "I'll continue to keep my room for now, I rather doubt anyone wants to be a witness to my night time diversions, well, unless they are the diversion." She gives a throaty laugh at the not so subtle innuendo. Once the girl has run off she looks at Aerodus, "You certainly do have an admirer, if she weren't quite so young I could give you any number of suggestions on how to handle her. Too bad." With the arrival of the young man, Terra seems intrigued, at least until she realizes he's a bit young for her taste.

Aerodus smiled as Aliesah retold the story of their adventure. It had been quite the hunt. He had learned a lot from the woman and had taught much in turn, he would hope. When she mentioned sharing the loft too, he smiled pleasantly and nodded, saluting her with his goblet. "It will be just like our time in the Forests but dry and less pine needles!"

Aerodus stared slightly at the little demonstration of the ingenious contraption that was Terras dress. He coughed softly, shaking his head. 'You are 86 man, act your age!' He shook his head and drained the goblet of wine before pouring another.

"It is a rather interesting turn of events that everyone is here at the same time..." He frowned, taking a bite of cheese and chewing it slowly. "I guess I only associate with the brave and true. Or brazen and true, in some cases!" He grinned, arching an eyebrow at Terra.

When she suggested that if the girl had been older, she would have helped him deal with her, Aerodus shook his head and laughed. "I am quite alright thank you very much!"

"And to you young lady." Raggo shakes one of Aliesah's with a strong, gauntleted fist. HIs hand seems to radiate heat, not uncomfortably so, but warmer than it should be.

Raggo turns to Belle and toss her a few silver."I'll stay in the common room I think"

Turning back to Aerodus. "Astray, never. I'm just showin' her how to stand up for her self."

Edit: Oop... I know, sorry.

Louis Navrotescu Place of Business

Rising late this day, Cayosin is still groggy from his recent armed escort service for Louis Navrotescu. Finally cleaned up and dressed, he checks out of the Inn and heads out into town in search of his next job or adventure since he is flat broke after restocking but lucky for him he paid for his room last night and his horse stabling is good for today. As he walks through town with his finely crafted and balanced quarterstaff on his shoulder, he is cordial with the townsfolk either by nodding to them, saying "Hello, nice day isn't it?", or waving. He makes his way to Louis Navrotescu business and greets the merchant, "Good Day Mr. Navrotescu, how is business today?! Do you have anything for me today?"

"Is that what you've been doing Raggo? After all this time it is no wonder I haven't learned anything." Wulf jokes. "I'm glad you came, friend. Most of these others are associates of Aerodus so I'll leave you all to get better acquainted. As for me, I am eager to learn more about why blue devils are suspected for the disappearances that occurred here recently and settle business before tending pleasantries."

Barring anything pressing Wulfrun bows to the group and grants herself pardon to head back into market to talk up the locals and learn more details of the rumor of blue devils and missing farm hands.

Confidentially, if your strong-arm work takes you there, beware the Duchess, she is a viper disguised as a Lady.
And of course, my wife also wants the latest news of The Ice Princess. ....Oh, that's what all the ladies are calling Baroness Irinia after she seized her father's Barony.
....Alak, You know Baroness Irinia, yes? -- Her father's Barony is adjacent to your own Baron Thrand's! I guess you don't follow politics.

In my opinion (in a tone that suggests he thinks VERY highly of it), Jojo must be involved. He is this unruly Ogre who has lived in the wilds north of here for years. Do you Know what kind of sexual practices and fetishes Ogres have? (clearly a rhetorical, enhancing his self worth through putting others beneath him) It's terribly uncouth.

If you asked me (He doesn't care if you asked him; you're better off in hearing his view, after all. And even he is uplifted by hearing the sound of his own voice.), someone should check on him to see what he's been doing. I don't know if the damn blue devils are from Cheliax, but I'm certain Jojo is involved!

Rubbish, Jojo is a simpleminded ogre who lives by himself north of here. Of course we don't let our kids play near there, what parent would, but except for the occasional stolen pie, barrel of wine or chicken, Jojo commits no crimes against us.
Otherwise, The Scarlet Knight would have killed him long ago, yes?!

Having finished her meal, and seeing that some of the group who gathered are getting up to go find out more about the problem, Terra gets up as well, "Since we're all going after these 'blue devils' we should probably all see what we can find out. I'd suggest we all meet back here later and discuss what we've learned." With that, Terra saunters out of the inn and into the streets looking for information.

Well I,
I mean, it's that...
They're devils; they come from Cheliax. I don't know particulars. And I'm sure I have no idea where they have taken our missing lads.

Aerodus finished the rest of his meal and smiled, standing and stretching slowly before sighing. "That sounds like a good plan, we should all do some snooping. I love your horse; are you a Solar or a Planetar. I learned about those from Nellus Alakart. He's a really smart man who lives in the plains between here and The Castle; he knows magic.

Only,... don't tell anyone I told you about him... See, he lives there because the Duke's cousin, Rustin Ewerwell, built that place and the Lord Grenwald and his cousin don't get along anymore.

I bet Alakart will know about those devils.

.

EDIT:I guess it doesn't take Aerodus long at all to get the extra info from Eric.
(Is it just me or does this Aerodus character have a special rapport with NPC children???)

EDIT #2:
Aerodus Aluain senses that Eric is telling the truth about Duke Grenwald's estranged relationship with his cousin, Rustin Ewerwell, but doesn't really understand how it all fits together, doesn't know the whole story. He just knows that people aren't really suppose to talk about Alakart -- not that it's some kind of taboo at all, he just feels that it would be really friggin cool to have shared a big SECRET with so impressive a figure as a Solar or Planetar.

Ah, I had not thought of that; my wife could go to the castle without me if you were to accompany her. Let me think on that and maybe make some plans, perhaps next week...
Meanwhile, you are welcome to stay in my cottage.

Your Sense Motive:
Louis will now try to think of a reason you can not take his wife to Castle Grenwald because he also wants to hear the latest gossip -- or will think of a reason why both he and his wife can go. But he is loathe to admit he wants to hear the political gossip after the long winter.
