"Why continue this farce, Caggan? Your chances of hiding what you are vanished the moment you took your monstrous shape to try and murder us--to murder me. We will bring you out tomorrow and the night after as well, sooner or later you'll succumb and everyone will see the beast within."

Moving closer, Rurisa kneels by the barkeep and whispers, "Even if you somehow resist the curse this month, your life here is over. The good people of Longacre may laugh off the accusations to your face, but when you disappear every full moon they'll whisper. They'll question, and sooner or later they'll learn the truth, and it'll be all the worse for your for having lied to them. It's over. End this pantomime and I'll authorize your release. We'll let you sell your tavern and leave town."

Standing, the mercenary takes a step away from the barkeep and turns to face the crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you don't believe that we're trying to play you for fools--it seems we have underestimated a lycanthropes' ability to control their forms, but the destruction Caggan has caused is undeniable. I invite you to please visit the jailhouse, and we will show you the cell torn apart by the wereboar's savage strength, the steel bars bent by monstrous power."

"But first, before all you witnesses, I wish to make one last appeal to honor. Caggan," Rurisa turns back to face the man. "Show these people the truth. Show them, and I offer my solemn vow that I will do all within my power to ensure that you are given leniency. What say you?"

Inactive

Don't give in Caggan. Or do. Either way I'm going to burn your bar down. Hopefully with you still in it. Let's see if your piggy powers can save you then."

Penance missed half of what was said as he stood in with the crowd, watching and daydreaming of repaying Caggan for assaulting him with that ladle. It didn't really matter to him how small the affront was, it was an affront none the less, and sooner or later, Penance would have to have the upper hand. He would have to win.

Caggan snarls as veins bunch in his arms and blood vessels burst in his eyes, the pupils of which begin expanding until all that can be seen is fathomless black. His skin rolls and the uncomfortable sounds of sinew snapping and bones cracking begin echoing throughout the square. The citizens of Longacre begin looking worried as the crowd takes a collective step backwards.

A terrible porcine squeal erupts from Caggan as he strains against the manacles, stretching the links almost, but not quite, to their breaking point. In a few terrible seconds it's all over as Caggan twitches, his increased body mass making the manacles even tighter around his limbs. He snarls around his tusks once more, "I'll kill you all!" as his blood-frenzied eyes turn on you again.

The townsfolk shriek with fear and loathing, scattering back to their homes and away from a man they once respected.

Rushing towards the stage, Penance dodged fleeing citizens left and right. He cursed himself from being so far away knowing that whole goal was to force Caggan to change. He hoped he would be able to get close enough to the accursed man before he managed to break free of his restraints.

Double Move closer to Caggan. I didn't see a map and I'm assuming I was slightly more than a single move away and with the crowd being difficult terrain.

Yep, sorry about that, didn't really think a map would be necessary with everyone in such close proximity.

Caggan seems to focus inwards as the crowd flees, trying to do something entirely new.

Drawing her sword, Rurisa sneers at the prone man as she draws her blade and waits patiently for the crowd to thin out. "You're not much of a tactician, Caggan. 'I'll kill you all' right as you shift, really? You've just forfeit your life and given us exactly what we need."

Draw greatsword, then Ready to 5ft step and attack him if the chains break.

If I had a better weapon at hand than a dagger or a crossbow I'd already have executed this pig.

Standing close to Rurisa, Vokrin urges her onward. Do it, end his life. Show the town justice, show them their protectors. Show them why they have nothing to fear in the night and no reason nor capability to rise against. End this insurrection here and now with one swing of your blade, he whispers in a near hiss.

Caggan concentrates again, working towards what, you don't know.

Con!: 1d20 + 4 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 5 = 18

His form begins shifting and changing, legs and arms thinning, torso dropping down, spine cracking with the shift. A pair of CLANKs sound as the manacles around his arms and legs drop to the stage, unable to hold onto his thinner boar legs. Vokrin takes the dagger and stabs it into the boar's neck, hoping to end this before it gets out of hand. "Die, worthless pig."

Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 Only a DC 15 fort. Ergo why I wanted Rurisa to do it. Critting with a strong greatsword = DC 30+, critting with tiny dagger from weakling = bad.

Fort!: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Vokrin, as though he has handled the slaughtering of animals before, slips over Caggan's back and, pulling the boar's head back, slides his dagger right across its throat. Caggan's lifeblood spills to the ground in a great river, swamping the stage and covering Trevor and Penance in red. As the tiefling lets Caggan down he shifts back to his human form, eyes glazed over and staring at the moon. Combat over!

"I know of this nice, recently vacated establishment with no waiting. I plan on burning it to the ground afterwards, but there should be plenty of available alcohol until then" Penance said with an evil grin.

Male Tiefling

Vokrin looks upset, not at what he had just done, that was a necessary task and was well-deserved, but at the thought that Penance would so wastefully destroy a structure that could serve use.

"Penance, you would burn a structure which we could turn to profit? I would see it reopened under new management. The townsfolk will need somewhere to blow off steam, and I would sooner not have this place more high-strung. Make our lives easier, if you would consider."

Inactive

"Awwww, You guys never let me have any fun!" Penance said as he kicked the ground out of frustration and shoved his hands into his pockets like a toddler having a tantrum.

Male Tiefling

"You could roast the body if you like, burn it in a pyre most grand. Send the scent of bacon throughout the town," Vokrin offers by way of concession.

I have no crafting skills, and we haven't really made any money, so I'm okay with moving on if no one else has anything.

Male Tiefling

Vokrin wants to hire a staff to work Caggan's bar, perhaps that guy we have infiltrating stuff. We can funnel some of the profits to that hospice place.

Cimri arrives early in the morning bearing several sacks filled with gold. "Pay day! Also Raz said there's some extra in there for rooting out some evil from the town." 250 gold each.

Cimri gets some coffee and sips it. "So...I just thought of this now, but I came in through Castle Gate. I remember locking the gate down, and I didn't see anyone who could've opened it again. Should be shut, but do you want to go check it out?"

Inactive

I think that's a really good idea Vokrin.

Craft (alchemy), poison: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30

Working quietly in one of the back rooms in the jail, Penance goes mostly unseen for days at a time. Occasionally he comes out and leaves to run a quick errand, normally coming back with a box full of exotic ingredients, only to return and immediately head back to where he was working.

On the morning of the third day, he comes stumbling out, rather disheveled and muttering only one word "coffee". At hearing that today is pay day, he perks up a little and heads towards Cimri and the intoxicating aroma. Downing a cup almost instantly, he fills another and listens to the latest pitch. "Sure, why not. Too much work and no play makes me a little crazy."

How big is the gate? Is there a crank or apparatus of any kind or is it just pulled or pushed open? Can one person move it alone or does it take more?

M Halfling Oracle2,Init+3,F3R4W4(6Fear),Per4,AC16T14T13

The gate sounds like a good destination.

The gate is a large 2 story affair with double doors that need to be closed with a large reinforced wood bar (requiring strength checks to put it in place).

How many people do you want to hire? 1 cook/bartender and 2 maids like Caggan's old setup or something else?

Cimri smirks, "I don't know if you intended that wordplay but I like it. You're little and crazy."

Male Tiefling

Sounds like a good plan. Someone behind the scenes, and someone with flesh to press. Can even keep on the old staff if they're willing under new ownership.

"We have little enough to do, so that would seem worth investigating." Vokrin agrees.

Cimri leads everyone back out to Castle Gate where the doors are open wide and the portcullis is up. She looks at it then turns to everyone, "I figure we can close the doors again at least. If we want to try to close it more permanently we could use the pulley system inside to drop the portcullis."

"Who's normally in charge of the gates?" Rurisa demands, glancing about for derelict guards to berate.

M Halfling Oracle2,Init+3,F3R4W4(6Fear),Per4,AC16T14T13

Trevor unfortunately has no real insight since he doesn't know who manned the gates. Shall we investigate?

Cimri shrugs. "Normally Bo and Dent were the ones that kept watch over these gates, but since we shut it permanently due to the Fex's orders they've been keeping to themselves. Or so I'm told." She considers Trevor's suggestion then pulls the door open into the gatehouse proper, waiting for everyone to head inside.

"It's a wise and healthy attitude to have. I believe in being prepared also, I need to learn to be a bit moreso." Vokrin gives a modest nod to the halfling. "A man never died young saying he wish he prepared less."

The single room inside the tower’s base is drafty. The interior of the tower is completely open between the stone floor and the flat wooden roof 20 feet overhead, interrupted only by supporting crossbeams and a well-used ladder that ends at an open hatch.

The pulley mechanism controlling the gate is situated in the southern wall, but the ropes have been cut, making the mechanism useless. The gate can be closed from the rooftop, bypassing the pulley completely.

DC 12 Kn. (Nature):
You notice that the ropes haven't really been cut so much as gnawed through by tiny teeth.

Trevor notices a small crack in the wall, allowing a little daylight to peer through. It won't allow much through, but a small cat or rat could fit through it.

Cimri looks at the rope and at the ladder, "Looks like we'll have to climb up the ladder if we want the gate closed. I'll head up if no one else wants to."

First up the ladder, DC 20 Perception:
The ladder has been cut through in the last 5 feet so it'll collapse under weight.
