A second smaller true striking dragon flies into the hallway after the first. Prepared for the attack, Rhon strikes the beast but doesn't do enough damage to put it down. The dragon snaps at Exiel. This one will trigger Rhon's ready.

EFS check. Note that this one is below Exiel so EFS will only give him cover.

Feral I wish I had been told sooner that the second attack could not be blocked by EFS. Under the circumstances he will also take it. Can he not orient it such that the hemisphere faces the dragon?

Purs: Exiel will need healing.

The limitations of EFS is written in the spell. I didn't think it was necessary for me to specify that attacks from below were unaffected or less effected by it. I did specify for the second attack because I thought it was important to clear up any expectations on what the spell was going to do.

Is Exiel including Rhon?

Edit: Disregard, Rhon is below him.

Vital Strike vs Exiel: 1d20 + 17 + 2 + 1 - 3 + 20 ⇒ (5) + 17 + 2 + 1 - 3 + 20 = 42

Purs/Rhon Please heal Exiel. He is at -4 hp. I need his see invisibility and echolocation spells. Ideally it will be Purs healing Exiel while Rhon attacks the dragons. Casting defensively is advised.

Feral Once Exiel regains consciousness, please reveal any invisibile creatures within his line of sight.

While he's conscious I will assume Exiel is relaying whatever he sees.

From the ground, Exiel casts a greater command spell on the dragons, compelling to stay still. DC25. Ralph will wait to see how they fare.

Feral: It was Exiel who cast the spell. He still has a move action.

Exiel takes a 5ft flying 'step' back and picks up his sword while out of reach of the dragon.

Ralph flies to Exiel's side and readies an action to cast wall of stone if another enemy joins the fight other than the two dragons that they can see.

Feral: Depending on what I actually see, I may not take my readied action. A warning from Exiel will potentially suffice to trigger my readied action.

Exiel wouldn't be able to pick up his sword this round. He had to stand up from prone.

Holy site updates batman!

Were you including Rhon in this one?

The bigger dragon snorts in amusement as Exiel takes cover in his force bubble for the third time. It wheels in the air and darts out of sight again.

From the rear, the source of the flapping rounds the corner. Spotting a better target, the dragon soars over the gnome and bears down on Ralph. It easily recognizes the wizard's illusionary defense it closes its eyes before it strikes.

EFS check. You didn't hear/see this one cast true strike but I'll give it to you since it seems to have no trouble pinpointing Ralph's location despite effectively being blind.

Feral: Exiel will not include Rhon or myself in his sphere this time. I will take the hit. Are the dragons using wands? By my count all 3 remaining dragons have cast at least 3 true strikes by now (maybe they just have that many spell slots, but if they are using wands that could change my tactics).

Feral: I will be sending Exiel out to chase the big dragon on his turn. Please indicate his position and elevation so I can give Exiel's actions. Given Exiel's line of sight, and the length of the tunnel, he can't have gone too far with a single move so Exiel should see him easily one he gets out there even if he has a 250ft fly speed. Unless we are fighting a dragon old enough to cast quickened dimension door.

Rhon/Purs: By my estimate the red-bordered dragon has taken 47 damage, assuming its AC is above 18 but below 25. The other 2 dragons are unhurt. If Rhon kills the red-bordered dragon with his full attack, Purs can channel without healing any dragons. Green-bordered dragon has closed its eyes to attack me, so it cannot take any attacks of opp on Purs.

No, the smaller dragons have not been using wands. If you must know, the bigger dragon used a wand while it was unseen but has not used it since. Yes, the three remaining dragons have cast three spells each. Yes, the red-bordered dragon has taken 47 damage.

Vital Strike vs Ralph: 1d20 + 17 + 2 - 3 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 17 + 2 - 3 + 20 = 53
Damage: 6d6 + 10 + 2 + 9 ⇒ (3, 5, 3, 1, 1, 4) + 10 + 2 + 9 = 38

The dragon that snapped out of Exiel's spell tears at Rhon with impossible speed.

Rhon Ralph would never express it, but THANK YOU for killing that dragon. I really wanted to get Exiel out there this turn.

Exiel dismisses his force sphere and flies out of the tunnel (he will take the attack of opp). When he sees the huge red dragon he points at the dragon and shouts something suitably heroic with the appropriate ham to smite the evil red dragon (color-coded for PC's convenience).

Ralph follows Exiel out and draws his empower rod again as he moves.

"Hmmph. Coward. She sends her children to fight to the death while she flees upon being struck by a single spell. Pathetic."

"The eldest red dragon has lost her brood and will be severely weakened for around 14 hours. While I would have preferred to finish her off I am content to complete our mission while she mewls in whatever dark hole she crawled into. We should have time to rest and recover once without having to worry about her again, so perhaps we should press on to make the most of whatever strength we have left."

"Exiel, you must maintain the ability to see invisible creatures at all times. We now know of a powerful adversary with access to that magic, and though weakened she is still dangerous if allowed to surprise us. You will not allow that to happen again."

"In our earlier battle the giants in the forge were reinforced almost instantly. This time the dragon already had an improved invisibility spell cast upon herself from the moment we entered this cavern. The duration of that spell is very short, so she must have known of our imminent arrival. We must assume that we have somehow already lost the element of surprise. Consequently there is no longer any advantage in pressing on relentlessly. Instead we must assume that our enemies have already learned of our presence and concentrated themselves in strategically advantageous positions. We must be prepared to frustrate those advantages and not overextend ourselves. Rushing in headlong will only result in us getting killed."

He waves at Earl's remains.

"Case in point."

Feral Since it appears that the red dragons had roosts near the top of the cavern, after Purs has healed us up, we will do a sweep of the cavern with particular attention to the ledges that the dragons descended from. We can go together since Rhon and Purs are now air-walking. Detecting magic and identifying as normal. Ralph will also check the lava pool to see if it somehow magically generates lava wyrms or is simply a natural feature.

Good job guys! And hey, looks like there's a nice breastplate for Rhon to wear too! =D I think Ralph gets the figurine. I ain't risking being carried into the lower planes. XD

Sorry, but I'm semi-out of it today as well. Will return to normalcy after this Friday.

Is the armor dwarf sized? :)

It's close enough.

Purs Since it is lying in a dragon horde instead of on a giant's torso, I presume it belonged to the earlier team that was here before us. But it might be small-sized rather than medium.

Addendum: Ninjaed by GM. Looks like Rhon can wear it.

Ralph turns himself invisible while the paladins put the loot into appropriate receptacles. He surreptitiously attends to his wound with his wand of infernal healing while they are unable to observe him.

Before setting off again, he will also use his ring of spell storing to cast air bubble and death ward on himself, then use spell study to convert his wall of stone and teleport spells into a cleric plane shift and store it in his ring.

"If I call for a retreat, make sure you come to me quickly. I do not believe Purs has prepared the spell to enter my demiplane, so I possess the only and best way of withdrawing to a safe location. Needless to say, it is in your own interests to keep me alive and conscious."

The invisible mage smiles darkly as his wounds are slowly closed by the fell magic from his wand.

@GM: Earl is not a companion or familiar. He is only an earth elemental with the celestial template applied. I can currently summon a huge sized earth elemental up to four times per day in the same manner that a paladin summons his mount. Other than that nothing else from the divine mount section of the paladin class applies to the Stone Servant.

See the following link: Stone Servant

Rhon slips the breast plate on and checks to make sure that it is tight and doesn't bind anywhere. "Does anyone have need of any of this other stuff at the moment or wish to carry it on them just in case?"

Purs holds out his foot. "I got my nice gnome boots. I don't need those slippers." He looks around..."Say I just realized that I've NEVER been in a fire giant kings lair..we should go explore. I bet here's LOTS of interesting places to look at. I mean do you guys like to look at interesting places!?!?"

I’m familiar with the class feature Rhon. It functions as the paladin’s mount which includes all the downsides.

I think the class feature leaves a bit to much unexplained and/or without clarification but I am willing to roll with it and move this adventure along.

I just read the class feature again. It really is poorly written.

I'll meet you halfway. You cannot summon your elemental again for 30 days (the adventure) but I'll let you forgo the attack/damage penalty for the duration of the adventure.

Are you guys ready to move on?

Rhon/Purs: Neither Exiel nor I have magical footwear but we can both fly so I do not think either of us need the slippers. We both wear cloaks too. As Exiel points out, I should take the figurine since Ralph is the only non-good-aligned character in the party. Spear can be someone's backup weapon.

Feral: Ralph will fly above Purs. Rhon will be in front of us. Since Exiel flies at about twice the speed Rhon walks at and has his echolocation and see invisibility spells on, Ralph will lend Exiel his ring of invisibility and send him forward to look out for enemies and give warning if he spots trouble. He will report back if he sees a door or a room with enemies within. He will double back as soon as he sees enemies and will not try to open any doors or enter any room on his own. He will use Ralph's ring to keep himself invisible. Since he flies at twice Rhon's land speed anyway, this should have little or no net effect on our overall travel speed.

After traversing another extended length of tunnels, the rough cavern walls eventually give way to worked stone.

Pairs of volcanic braziers flank the walls along the entire length of this narrow chamber. Oily flames flicker from the tops of volcanoes carved into the walls in bas relief, and sparkling stones glitter like lava flowing toward the ground.

A pair of enormous polished steel doors bar the party's progress further.
