Ottilia uses her wand on her and her comrades if needed but refuse to be healed by dark magic.

It was close and I almost believed my stubbornness will get us all killed. But Shelyn finished to smile on us, giving us victory.

She checks the pulse of the uncouncscious bandits to take them prisoners.

2 charges for 11 healing is fine.

Kel finds a couple potions on the down/captured bandits and a used up magical scabbard. The specifics aren't super important.

Ottalia checks them but finds both the downed bandits to be dead. The survivor doesn't object as he is stripped and bound.

Beyond the Path of Commencement, the mountain pass winds down into the southwestern border of Druma. A golden-framed signpost illustrating the region is the only notable landmark denoting the border. The map depicts the entire nation of Druma, with important landmarks and cities denoted by sparkling gems.

A detachment of Druma’s elite army, the Mercenary League, greets the party and their prisoner. "Welcome travelers. What business brings you to Druma?"

From Petitioner's Port the party boards a riverboat called the Sapphire Star and travels downstream along the Profit’s Flow River. That night the party catches sight of the coveted island city Alabastrine, visible by the magical lighting of its legendary Luminous Wharf. The last stop on the way to Kerse is the spartan wooded town of Macridi where the riverboat captain refreshes the vessel's supplies. In total the rest of the trip to Kerse is roughly a week but blissfully uneventful.

Finally the party arrives in the Drumish capital city of Kerse, where they are quickly recognized by an aide of Temel Passad and escorted to the Kalistocrat’s manor estate. It seems it will be several hours before Passad can meet with the party but the time passes quickly as Passad’s servants spare no expense to shower the party with luxuries such as lavish baths and the finest of exotic wines.

Once the party is refreshed, those that did not bring their own are provided with a suit or dress of exquisite quality and a set fine jewely - it seems the garb of an adventurer is inappropriate in Druman society.

Eventually the party is summoned to a private meeting chamber where they're greeted by Temel Passad himself. Passad is a tall man with carefully groomed hair and an oiled beard. He wears pristine white clothing heavy with gold embroidery and gems.

"Greetings Pathfinders, I apologize for the delay but final preparations for the upcoming auction have consumed all of my time. I only have an hour or so to spare to brief you on the rules and the parties involved. Things begin tomorrow morning."

"Good day to you Temel!" says Bulgo.

The halfing had been spending much of the trip fretting over whether his court attire would be appropriate for Kerse. Having locally relevant clothing provided is a much appreciated gift. He also takes the opportunity to bathe in the pools and avail himself of local perfumes.

By the time he emerges Bulgo appears very much the well-to-do halfling of Drumish origin.

While waiting for Temel he avails himself only lightly of the food and wine. The samples are small, but he takes time looking over them to ensure the samples are only of the finest foods on the table.

"Doesn't Temel adhere to the Prophecies of Kalistrade? I thought they were restricted in what they ate and drank?

Once the merchant joins them Buglo offers a respectful bow.

"Good master, we thank you for your time. What can you tell us of the other bidders and how the bidding might proceed? Might there be any weaknesses among them that we could exploit?"

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"There are a total of five districts up for purchase in the scheduled bidding for Alabastrine as well as, conveniently, five bidders. Each of the five bidders is required to host a social function as part of the bidding. During these soirees, a member of the Resplendent Bureaucracy takes bids on each district of Alabastrine. At the conclusion of each social function, the Resplendent Bureaucracy representative relays the current lead bidder for each district. At the end of the final function, the winners are announced, and the allocation of Alabastrine is declared complete", Temel explains between sips of a pale herbal tea. "I believes that you can influence the other bidders during these social functions on behalf of your Society. There are two events each day, taking place in the morning and evening respectively. The final hosted event takes place on the morning of the third day of bidding."

Temel unfurls a detailed map and gestures for the party to gather around it.

"The city of Alabastrine was meant to be one of the greater settlements in Druma. Its size alone positioned it to possibly become Druma’s second largest city — rivaling the shipyards of Detmer. Located on an island at the mouth of the Profit’s Flow, the city would have allowed the proper segregation of a refugee influx, giving adequate time to convert these newcomers to the ways of the Prophecies. Because of this, Alabastrine earned the moniker City of Heathens."

"The city's five districts are:"

"#1 The Courts of Abstinence. A tightly crammed district, filled with tightly built apartments. Where the other districts of Alabastrine are sparse and given to architectural displays of wealth, the Courts of Abstinence are as utilitarian as their name would suggest. The expected refugee population was meant to dwell within the labyrinthine apartment complexes, but none ever filled to their massive capacity. In recent years, the government of Cheliax and several Hellknight orders have requested temporary use of the Courts to improve their urban fighting skills."

"#2 The Luminous Wharf. A constellation of magical lights overhead gave this district its name. The wharf’s builders installed the lights atop hundreds of marble towers to assure those seeking refuge from the tumult of the rest of the world that Alabastrine was always open. Now, the lighting serves a new purpose: reminding passing ships of the existence of the city, which they might otherwise condemn to fade into obscurity."

"From what I've heard, none of the bidders have a keen interest in the wharf. You'll have to put in extra effort and specifically champion it among the bidders to see it kept from your enemy's hands."

"#3 Prophet’s Burg. This is the center of Alabastrine but it was never completed, leaving an abandoned patch of land in the city’s core. That changed when High Prophet Kelldor invested in the city, self-funding an entire city district, which received the unofficial title of Prophet’s Burg. The most ostentatious structures in the whole of Alabastrine reside in this district, which is considered to be prime real estate for those seeking to live within the city. The city’s ruling council meets in the central structure of the district — an awe-inspiring edifice of glass and gold known as Kelldor’s Spire."

"#4 Scriptum. This district houses dozens of titanic libraries, containing innumerable treatises on the history of the Prophecies of Kalistrade. Other libraries detail different religious, but always from a clinical examination devoid of religious fervor. It was here that the architects of Alabastrine intended to indoctrinate the new arrivals, by providing free access to the texts within Scriptum’s libraries. Many ideas from this district were later employed in the successful Drumish settlement of Twingate."

"#5 Working End. Much of this section of the city was meant for industrial purposes. Vast empty warehouses and smaller uninhabited structures fill the majority of Working End. This district is commonly thought to be one of the least appealing bid sites, and has most commonly been used in the past as hosting sites for illegal trade or the long-term storage of goods by outside nations. One of this district’s attractions is that any goods not specifically removed from the warehouses by the completion of the bidding are forfeit to the new district councilor."

See associated map for visual aid.

"Any questions so far?" Temel asks as he motions for a servant to pour him another glass of tea.

"Five districts, five bidders, five meetings. We know are bidding, and so is Myrosype. What do we know of the other three and their priorities? I assume we now know who they are. Is there any significance to the order of the events that are being hosted?"

Bulgo is just full of questions.

"I was recently at an auction where all losing bids were forfeit. Is that the case here? Is there any advantage to being in the lead on - for example the first meeting, or is there any reason not to save ones bids for the end of the fifth meeting?"

Kel wrinkles his nose slightly at the overwhelming mixed scents of perfumes and colognes... Almost overcome by the stimulation.

He listens with grave intent to the descriptions of the districts and the auction itself. "This is going to be ... interesting."

"The five bidders:"

"First there's Cyran Androtus. No one really knows much about Cyran. He’s an elf; perhaps one of the longest lived devotees of the Prophecies. He is said to traffic outside of Golarion, supplying extraplanar factions with raw materials and facilitating negotiations among them. He possesses considerable magical abilities. If you can learn something from him, you’ll do better than most.”

Planes 20:
Androtus is a major player in planar politics, with strong ties to the lawful realm of Axis.

"Second is Irith Nomzamo. You can barely get close to that woman; what, with all the eccentric clothing she wears. If she speaks more than ten words a day, I’d be surprised. Can’t help but feel sorry for her though; Irith made a good run of ruling Alabastrine since the last bid, and now that trade looks to be on the upswing, her time as lord-councilor is running out. I’d be surprised if she manages to acquire more than a single district.”

"Next is Myrosype. She’s no prophet, nor does she even hail from
the Inner Sea. I have heard that she hails from the distant land of Iblydos. I hold no grudge against Myrosype, though I know your Society does. She’s always been pleasant in our interactions, and she has a reputation for always keeping up her end of a bargain. She has enough clout to have made her way into the bidding, and is poised to take the lion’s share of the districts if left unchecked.”

"Then there's me. What can I say about myself? I’m a devout follower of the Prophecies of Kalistrade. I only hope to carve out a single district, though I remain unsure if I possess the wealth to contend with the likes of Myrosype and the other attendees.”

"Lastly there's Vayde Petronax. He’s a damn skeleton of a man. Some say he adheres to the strictest tenures of the Prophecies when it comes to the consumption of food and drink. I can barely stand listening to his hoarse voice for more than a few minutes, but it’s clear the wizened elder of the Petronax family knows much about the city. After all, his family’s servants and soldiers have been working the streets since before High Prophet Kelldor enacted the bidding process.”

All of the bidders come and place an anonymos note with his bidding into a clay urn and the highest bid wins? Or are there other parts yet hidden to me. Is the quality of the soiree and the ability to be a great conversation of any importance?"
Ok I am totally lost here!

Temel sighs and spends the rest of his time allotted to the party explaining the bidding process in detail.

The bidders bid off and on throughout the day. At the end of each day the high bidder for each district is announced. At the end of the end of the third day all bids are final and the high bidders for each distrct wins those districts.

The exact mechanics of the bidding isn't super important since you guys aren't actually bidding yourselves. You just need to influence those present to outbid the Aspis agent - Myrosype - as much as possible.

He pauses and counts on his fingers
" Irith Nomzamo, the incumbent. Who might hold a sentimental thought for ruling it, possibly able to afford more than one district."

A third finger "Myrosype - who may want it all. Perhaps a strategy may be to encourage her to spread her bids out."

A forth finger goes up, "Yourself - aiming for one district... but which one? If we could encourage others to look at different districts it would aid everyone - bar Myrosype "

Finally Bulgo's thumb goes up "Vayde Petronax. Old, and from an old family - Petronax. Perhaps there is a rivalry between him and Irith - if he feels his family should have won control last time?"

He looks up to Temel. "Do you have any indication about which district they are most likely to want to bid for.. or what we could do to help influence each?"

Dropping his hands he asks "Apart from the Luminous Wharf which is surprisingly undesirable, are all the districts of similar value? And do we know who still has good stored in Working End? Is Irith the current "owner" of that district - if not her, who is?"

We won't be convincing her of anything, she's already doing her best to outwit and outbid us anyways. Besides, she clearly has the capital to buy it all herself, at least as it stands now. We just need to get the other four to increase their bids on a respective district such that Myrosype ends up with nothing! Or if anything, something useless like Working End, which sounds like quite a depressing place to me."

"I'm sorry but it seems we've run out of time. We might have a chance to speak again tomorrow before brunch. Good evening."

Everyone can roll the following checks to remember some information that you might have heard about the bidders.

Planes 20:
Cyran Androtus is one of the wealthiest people in the wealthiest nation of the Inner Sea region. His presence at the bidding for Alabastrine’s distracts is likely a social formality, as few of his significant contacts reside in the Inner Sea. Cyran’s trade partnerships extend to numerous planar enterprises, particularly sites on the plane of Axis. He is allied with a contingent of inevitables known as the Axion Forge.

Nobility 14:
Irith is the current lord-councilor of Alabastrine. She secured the majority of the city during the previous bidding cycle at the expense of her other mercantile endeavors. Time was not kind to Irith, and the fortune of Alabastrine is only now beginning to change, given increased trade with Isger and the ongoing civil problems in nearby Cheliax.

History or Nobility 10:
Myrosype is a member of the unsanctioned Aspis Consortium group known as the Korholm Agenda. As financier for the splinter faction, she possesses incredible wealth within the Consortium, having made numerous successful ventures during her time in Druma. Unlike many of the other attendees, Myrosype is not a member of the Prophets of Kalistrade, though she is willing to work with them for mutual gain.

Nobility or Local 10:
Temel Passad is a merchant and Kalistocrat who has great ambitions. He sees the bidding for Alabastrine’s districts as a way to further his clout in Druma, particularly if he can successfully purchase a district for himself.

Nobility 15:
Vayde is the patriarch of the Petronax family, who have maintained a constant supply of laborers and soldiers to the councilors of Alabastrine. Up until now, the Petronax family had no interest in actually bidding on Alabastrine, and the motion by Vayde to participate in the bidding has shocked all other attendees. In particular, Irith Nomzamo is incensed at what she perceives as a betrayal by the man whose workers she’s used to maintain the city.

This scenario using the finalized version of the Influence System as presented in Ultimate Intrigue. This system will be familiar to those that have played Blakros Matrimony and Hellknight's Feast.

The bulk of the influence system is based on influence and discovery checks.

Influence checks are how the PCs actually make progress in the scenario. Whenever it's called for, a PC can attempt to sway one of the bidders toward bidding on a specific district. Please indicate which district you are swaying the bidder to take interest in when you make your roll. Multiple skills can be used to influence a bidder but they are unknown starting out. Discovery checks can determine which skills can be used to influence a given NPC and which skills are more or less effective.

Discovery checks are used to glean useful information on an NPC. The types of discovery checks are: Analyze (learn which skills can be used to influence an NPC), Strengths (learn facts that will apply penalties to influencing the NPC), and Weaknesses (learn facts that will apply bonuses to influencing the NPC). The local, nobility, and sense motive are the skills used for discovery checks.

Anyone that succeeded on checks from this post get a +4 bonus on discovery checks for that NPC.

Around mid-morning, the party is summoned. They are escorted from Temel Passad's guest quarters out into the yard on the waterfront of Lake Encarthan. His event prominently displays the beauty of the lake and the bustle of Kerse’s navy, as well as his prize gardens featuring rare plants from around the Inner Sea region and beyond. He has treated some portions of the garden with a variety of expensive alchemical mixtures to cause the plants to grow in unusual colors and patterns. As the PCs arrive, servants escort them onto the veranda that overlooks the lake, along with the other guests for the event.

The guests of honor arrive shortly after the party.

Cyran wears simple plain white robes with minor gold embellishments and an expensive headband. Cyran’s attire is almost heretically drab in comparison to the normally ostentatious strictures of the Prophecies of Kalistrade. The wizard only cares to impress those with at least a basic aptitude for magic, and spares no expense to cloak himself in a dizzying array of magic auras.

Irith Nomzamo is a tall Garundi woman, bedecked in white robes and a gem-studded cloth of gold mantle. Her robes are augmented with numerous spiked embellishments that make physical contact with the lord-councilor difficult. She speaks in a constant deep timbre, always making eye contact with her prominent jade-colored eyes.

Myrosype is an average sized woman with light brown skin, her ethnicity bearing hints of both Casmar and Vudrani. She’s garbed in a white peplos robe secured with a gold Aspis badge and embellished with a golden belt band around her waist. She speaks with a distinct accent — a speech with a measured cadence that one could scrutinize with a metronome and find few flaws. She wears an expensive perfume with hints of burnt incense and balsam.

alchemy or nobility 20:
The perfume she's wearing is Lady’s Promise, a scent that is becoming increasingly popular among members of the Chelish nobility.

Vayde is a skeletally gaunt man, whose bones visibly protrude from his ashen, papery skin. He looks comically tiny in impressive regalia of Kalistocratic robes, bedecked with jewels, numerous golden and platinum embellishments, and a gilded drake’s body.

The final guest is a quiet dwarf named Hegio, who represents the Resplendent Bureaucracy by keeping track of the bids submitted and announcing the current lead bidders at the end of the event.

As guests are arriving and introductions are being made everyone can make a free discovery check. Again, please note who you're researching and what information you're looking for.

I'm a little confused... do we need all 3 skills for each type of discovery... or is local for analyze, nobility for strengths and sense motive for weaknesses?

Thinking of himself as somewhat of a scholar, Ramenhotep decides to approach the elf Cyran. He hobbles up to Cyran and gives a slight bow of his head. No. Pick the skill of your choice and the discovery target of your choice

Kel approaches Irith Nomzamo and gives her a polite bow. "Greetings milady, i am Celidrian Duskwalker, and I must say how honored I am to meet you. What a glorious time and place to be at this moment, a crux in the history of Alabastrine. I wish you well in the upcoming bidding."

Ottilia put down her armor to wear an outfit better suited for this type of reunion. Her almost transparent light dress is white and gold with a red rose embroidered on her back.

She salute each of the bidder with a smile and a bow. But for now she tries to talk to Irith, following Kel in this matter.

Learn Strength Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 4 = 18

May Shelyn's blessing be upon you Irith Nomzamo. I am Ottilia Damalys from Sargava and servant of Shelyn, It's an honor and a pleasure to meet you. I hope we will be able to talk during this event and if I may be of help, don't hesitate to call me.

Irith says nothing but politely shakes Ramenhotep and Kel's hands with her own gloved hand.

By watching and listening as she makes the rest of her introductions, the duo learn that Irith is a merchant by trade, and those using Profession (merchant) in their talks with her appeal to her life’s work. One could also use Knowledge (nobility) or Diplomacy to appeal to Irith’s political interests, or use Bluff to cheat their way through negotiations with her.

Temel offers Bulgo a small smile and nods in agreement. "It's taken me the whole of the last week to arrange all of this. I appreciate the vote of confidence."

Watching him make introductions, Bulgo learns that Passad is somewhat of a coward, and easily falls prey to bullies. Intimidate could be used to force him to increase his bidding beyond what he’s comfortable with. Bluff or Diplomacy, can help with talking Temel into throwing most of his wealth at Alabastrine. Finally, discussing the military viability of the Courts of Abstinence using Knowledge (history) could be used to prompt Temel to further his bidding.

***

Felicitas quickly learns that Myrosype is quite open about her affiliation with the Aspis Consortium. She is beyond the Society’s influence.

***

Irith gives Ottalia the same silent handshake she gave the men.

But by watching her as she interacts with the few others she shares words with, the priestess learns that Irith knows she’s going to lose many districts of Alabastrine during this bidding process, but her pride keeps her aggressive as ever during the process. Insinuating that Irith is likely to lose territory causes a –4 penalty on checks to influence her.

***

Once introductions are complete Passad's servants begin to make rounds with a somewhat humble offering of hors d’oeuvres and fine wines. Temel personally gives tours of the gardens to those that show an interest.

Temel Passad is impressed by those who show informed appreciation for his gardens. Anyone that can succeed at a DC 14 Craft (alchemy), Knowledge (nature), or Profession (gardener) check knows enough about Temel’s rare plants to pay him a knowledgeable compliment. This grants a +2 bonus on all influence checks against Passad for the rest of the scenario.

I added slides to the handout link for a cheat sheet. I encourage you guys to add notes with relevant bonuses as you learn more about the bidders.

Everyone can make an influence or discovery check against a bidder of their choice.

Bulgo is very appreciative of the gardens. He spends a bit of time smelling the roses and enjoying the sites and smells.

After the encounter with the bridge, this is much more along the lines of what he was hoping to be spending time doing.

Alas, he knows nothing about the flowers of interest Craft can be done untrained, but not sure if that is really appropriate here

Bulgo does compliment him on flowers and the setting. Making small talk, he tries to learn more about the pathfinders host.
