Nyrmentharyth |
Don't forget your reflex save against the steam Titus.
Nyrmentharyth drops a huge boulder from above.
<As the littler ones would say...Bombs away!>
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Boulder Damage: 12d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 1, 2, 5, 2, 6, 3, 3, 5, 1, 3) = 41
She then begins her descent towards the Tortoise.
With Battlesense, that would make the Ranged Touch total 20 if it matters.
Malagar Dragonsworn |
Malagar continues to channel psionic power through Nyrmentharyth and sharpens the senses of all his allies.
<Careful Titus, we have a good line of sight on the beast, but it'll be difficult to keep track of you in the steam.>
Battlesense, augmented up to 7pp, granting everyone +2 to attack rolls and you can use an immediate action to aid another. Tibets, keep in mind your pet can now aid another you or anyone else.
Tibbets McBoomer |
Enola, who has been quietly murmuring about food in her thoughts, now switches gear. <foodfoodfoodHELPFRIENDTIBBETS>
Aid Another: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 Aid Another to give Tibbets +2 attack
She the lets out a chittering screech and bolts forward.
Double moving 100 feet in a straight line that’ll take me close to the tortoise, and away from it. Bombing run, basically.
Tibbets lets out a very goblin-y shriek of equal parts joy and terror as he’s jolted back into his saddle at the sudden acceleration, but quickly gets to work with assembling three bombs that seem to be covered in frost. ”NYR! I’ll show you what 'bombs away' REALLY looks like!” When they get closest to the tortoise, Enola banks slightly-not enough to really turn, but enough so that Tibbets has a clearer line of sight on the beast. <dropboomthingsnowfriendtibbets>
Tibbets drops the bombs into the wicker basket attached to his arm and deftly flicks them at the beast. They explode in a great cloud of hyper-cold air.
Enola is double moving, I’m full-round attacking with Rapid Shot for a total of 3 bombs. He’s gotta make a DC 25 Fort save on a direct hit or be staggered next round. With the extra bonuses and penalties all factored in, I’m making all of these attacks at a +1.
Bomb 1 RTA: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (14) + 19 = 33
Damage: 4d6 + 10 ⇒ (1, 1, 4, 2) + 10 = 18
Bomb 2 RTA: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
Damage: 4d6 + 10 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 5) + 10 = 25
Bomb 3 RTA: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (12) + 19 = 31
Damage: 4d6 + 10 ⇒ (6, 2, 5, 3) + 10 = 26
For a total of 69 possible damage before DR is applied. Gotta love Clustered Shots.
Tibbets shrieks in laughter as the bombs go off. ”WHOOOOO! 11 MORE WHERE THOSE CAME FROM! GONNA MAKE TORTOISE STEW TODAY!"
Storm Dragon |
@Alex, remember that Damage Reduction and Energy Resistance aren't the same. If you want to change your Clustered Shots Feat for something more useful given that knowledge, go ahead.
The four of you hammer the tortoise, but it weathers the storm. In particular, Tibbets' cold bombs do nearly nothing to the beast, as its innate body temperature protects it from the cold. It also seems somewhat unbothered by Jagz' acid, but to a much lesser degree, and the efficacy of the boulder and bullets is diminished as well.
It is, however, an enormous target, and all of your attacks easily hit.
I.e. it has Resistance to cold and Acid (less to acid) and some kind of Damage reduction. And a very, very low Touch AC.
The tortoise, facing attacks from above, oddly turns its attention to the ground. After a moment it opens its mouth and spews a white hot beam of energy directly at the ground, swiftly causing the rock underneath its feet to melt and heat to red-hot temperatures. A barrier of steam and smoke likewise forms around the tortoise, completely obscuring it from view.
The Tortoise's area and 30 feet around it (effectively, a 40 ft. radius sphere) are now covered in thick smoke, and everything inside has total concealment.
you're up!
Titus Gallus Sextus |
I don't know whose turn it is, so...
longbow: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 84
longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 87
Tibbets McBoomer |
Tibbets speaks telepathically to his friends. <So let's recap-this tortoise shrugged off my frost bombs like I had tickled him with a feather, Jagz's acid rounds like a slightly bigger feather, and didn't react when a dragon dropped a small mountain on its head. It has armor a mile thick, is probably immune to all forms of immolation up to and including being doused in the fires of Mount Doom, and despite being roughly the size of the village I grew up in, is currently nearly invisible. I am open to any and all suggestions right now that don't come from my bat. Hers are mostly about food anyways.>
Jagz |
<It's still big, and it's still in there somewhere. Maybe if we piss it off enough, it'll come charging out of its steam cloud.>
Jagz decides to save his acid bombs, and keeps up the assault with normal cartridges.
Miss: 1d100 ⇒ 82

Miss: 1d100 ⇒ 21
Attack: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16

"Ah, hell."
Against his better judgment, he shoots twice more after misfiring.
Miss: 1d100 ⇒ 64

Damage: 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

Titus Gallus Sextus |
<Or... We leave it there and keep shooting.>
longbow: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 27
longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 7
Malagar Dragonsworn |
Malagar continues Nyr's descent slowly.
<I'm at a loss on how to proceed.>
He decides to hurl his spear downward.
Attack!: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 4) + 9 = 19
Miss?: 1d100 ⇒ 21
Tibbets McBoomer |
Tibbets shrugs, and pulls a small jar out of his belt pouch. He lobs it into the fog. <Might as well use a burst jar, not exactly sure what else I can do here. I can do ice and fire bombs, and for some reason I don't think my fire bombs will do much against him.>
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (11) + 18 = 29
Miss?: 1d100 ⇒ 18
Next round the burst jar will explode, dealing 1 Sonic damage, deafen him for 1d4 ⇒ 2 rounds, and he has to make a DC 12 Fort or be stunned for a round.
Storm Dragon |
You hear, rather than see, two bullets and Malagar's spear impact the tortoise, doing minimal damage to it.
Still, the smoke clears after a moment, and not all is as hopeless as it seems. As impregnable as the Tortoise's armor looks, it is still bleeding (if slightly) from its wounds.
It's at about half HP.
Before its turn, how high is everyone flying? I imagine relatively low given you're using guns and thrown weapons, but making sure.
Jagz |
50 feet. I don't have to get all that close with guns because I'm just that good (aka Limitless Range).
Storm Dragon |
The great tortoise turns to the small creatures that have given it so much pain, and breathes another great gout of steam in an immense cone.
45 ft. cone (radiating from a creature 20 ft. tall), which are kinda weird when pointed straight up or down; it catches both Jagz and Tibbets/Enola.
Damage: 10d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 4, 2, 3, 4, 2, 5, 3, 4) = 33
Reflex save DC 25 half, and the area directly around you is obscured...this one's a bit weird given it's a cone so the tortoise isn't technically covered by the steam, it's just engulfing a strange tapering area above him. It blocks view for everyone but can be circumvented by maneuvering (make sure Jagz/Tibbets/Enola account for half damage from being blinded).
The whole party is up!
Titus Gallus Sextus |
Pew! Pew!
longbow: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 40
longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 3
Titus Gallus Sextus |
Huh... I just noticed that I acted twice last turn. Well, doesn't matter, since I most likely missed both attacks the second time... And probably this round as well. But that's ok. There's always another round.
Jagz |
Ref: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (14) + 18 = 32
Does fire resistance help with this?
Titus Gallus Sextus |
I think we're better off ignoring the "scalding damage" rule... Not only it's all but completely unknown (seriously, it came up in exactly one game session in all the time I played PF) , but it makes no sense. Fire resistance works against freaking lava, FFS! ><'
Jagz |
Jagz dodges the brunt of the steam blast, and the rest passes over him harmlessly. Completely unfazed, he flies 20 feet away from Tibbers and 20 feet up, then clears his gun.
Storm Dragon |
Yeah, I've given people long enough.
The tortoise flares again, its fires stoked even further by these creatures not wilting at the lick of its heat. Still, it tries again to boil its assailants alive, firing a long stream of steam at Titus.
Damage: 10d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 4, 2, 4, 3, 4, 6, 5, 6) = 40
Ref DC 25 half, and everyone's up again! Titus you are completely blinded by steam ATM, but can move to see, and the creature is currently fully visible to everyone else.
Titus Gallus Sextus |
Wait... How far does this jet go? oO
Even with Titus ascending at half speed, that's still 120 ft straight up.
1d20 + 16 ⇒ (12) + 16 = 28
Jagz |
Jagz fires four acid cartridges, and loads four more.
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Acid Damage: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5) + 6 = 17

Acid Damage: 3d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1) + 6 = 15
Jagz |
Ref: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (20) + 16 = 36
Please tell me I can just 5-foot "step" out of the steam line.
Jagz |
Jagz floats calmly out of the steam, still completely unharmed, then starts shooting.
"Keep trying, big guy! I almost felt a little warm that time!"
Malagar Dragonsworn |
Malagar holds his hand up and his spear flies back to his hand before hurling it down again.
HURL!: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (5, 4) + 9 = 18
Titus Gallus Sextus |
pew: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
pew: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
[+12 - 2 (for being beyond first range increment) +1 (for higher ground)] = 1d20+11 .
Tibbets McBoomer |
Sorry, forgot to roll my saves for last round
Tibbets Reflex: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
Enola Reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 No damage w/ Evasion
Enola does a tight barrel roll, somehow avoiding the steam entirely. Tibbets grunts in pain however, as her roll sends the steam partially into his face. Maneuvering out of my butt, Tibbets pulls out his bow and fires at the turtle, hoping that the multiple impacts will crack its defenses.
Bow 1: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Bow 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2
Clustered Shots does apply here, but with those damage numbers it's not really gonna matter...
Storm Dragon |
The arrows of Tibbets, as well as Malagar's spear merely clatteroff the tortoise's great shell, though Titus manages to strike it a glancing blow to the leg.
It is Jagz who once again shines, hammering the same locations he assaulted last round, beginning to burn a hole in the great beast's armored carapace. It screams in agony, but struggles on.
Unfortunately, its breath weapon is its only ranged attack.
Noting how ineffectual its steam is, particularly now that he has almost no targets within range, the Forgeheart seems to consider fleeing, aiming a short blast at the ground to note its softness.
After a moment, however, it stares defiantly up at you, and sets its feet against your attacks. It fires a last defiant blast at Jagz...
Damage: 10d10 ⇒ (4, 3, 10, 8, 4, 6, 2, 3, 10, 10) = 60
..And then falls to a hail of acid-soaked gunfire, collapsing onto its belly with a great crash and lightly melting the stone around its body. The beast lies dead.
No reason to go through another round; Jagz can take it out without any real danger.
Jagz |
Ref: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26
"Arrgh!"
Jagz once again dodges the worst of the blast, but the steam overcomes his resistance this time.
"Now that was very rude." he mutters, as he finishes off the beast. "You need a nap."
Malagar Dragonsworn |
Malagar has Nyrmentharyth descend to the beast. He then sets about preparing various bits and pieces for transport. Nyrmentharyth nudges the corpse onto it's side to get access to the more fleshy pieces.
Take 10 on survival with Nyr aid anothering for a 35 to harvest the creature.
Jagz |
lol
Jagz does this.
Nyrmentharyth |
<Certainly a large one. Lacked cunning however.>
She breathes a cone of frost on the parts still smoldering.
Jagz |
"Let's be sure to keep the heart intact. I hear it's pretty useful."
Jagz |
"So, the flesh is a perfect insulator. I wonder if it could be put to use. Maybe for refrigeration, or..."
Jagz's eyes light up.
"...or as a heat-sink for a huge steam-powered cannon? Ehehehehehe!"
Titus Gallus Sextus |
"Not sure that is good idea. It can handle heat, but pressure is different. Tortoise guts won't stop explosion."
Jagz |
"No, see, that's the beauty of it. It'll be a steel cannon, but the housing of the firing mechanism will be coated in heat-absorbing turtle meat! All the benefits of both materials!"
"Anyway, we should get the heart back to town before the blood dries. Someone there is bound to recognize the genius of my idea!"
Malagar Dragonsworn |
Malagar wipes some sweat from his forehead and cleans his hands of blood.
"I'm just about done tearing the important bits out. Anyone want anything else? If not, we should head on back."
