Fabian's Carrion Hill (Inactive)

Game Master Fabian Benavente

This is a test run of a hybrid system combining the best qualities of a PBEM and PBP. The game has already started as PBEM so we'll just play the last part as a 'hybrid'.

The strange city of Carrion Hill has long loomed over the surrounding swamps in eastern Ustalav, yet its rulers have shifted many times through the centuries. Often enough that only a few sinister scholars and curious minds know the true nature of the hill’s original inhabitants—vile and depraved cultists of the Old Gods.

Yet this morning, a dreadful recrudescence rises from the depths of buried nightmare in the vaults below Carrion Hill. A monster stalks the twisted alleys of the city, spreading panic before it and leaving destruction in its wake. Can the Carrion Hill Horror be stopped?

I am looking for four or five characters to star in a PBEM (Play By Email) version of Pathfinder’s Module Carrion Hill. If you don’t know what a PBEM game is, you’re in luck because I’m currently DMing another PBEM. So if would like to see what the game will be like, please see the webpage linked at the bottom of this post. On that website, you can find simple PBEM rules, characters, turn recaps, use of maps, how combat is handled, etc. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Character selection will NOT be first come first serve, and we will take time to develop characters. The game will have action as well as problem solving so a good mix of characters is recommended. The pace will be about two turn recaps per week, and I will do all the dice rolling. I am looking for "roleplayers" whose email posts are NOT a one sentence reply. All players are expected to write two to three paragraphs per turn recap within 48 hours after the recap is issued (so about four to six paragraphs per week) so if you can't meet that schedule please do not bother applying to the game.

If this sounds like a game for you, then send me a character with the following sections: a) appearance, b) background, c) personality, and d) portrait or picture. Please make the characters interesting, the strong and silent types just don't cut it in this type of game. See the website if you would like to see a sample character as a reference on the type of submission I'm looking for. Please include in your recent history that your PC is in town (Carrion Hill) celebrating the birthday of his good friend, Mayor Heggry. Details as to how the mayor and the PC are good friends are left up to the player. Once players are selected, we may work a background where some or all the PCs somehow know each other and may have even worked together in the past. I don’t like the gimmick of everyone meeting when the adventure starts and since the PCs are all 5th level, it makes sense to have some sort of shared background.

Just so you can start thinking about the crunch part (some people work this way), here are some guidelines: core races only, Core Rules and APG, 5th level characters, 20 point buy system for abilities, no evil characters, average gold, maximum hit points at 1st level and then half+1 (d8 is 5, d12 is 7, etc.) for other levels, two regular traits (not from same category). I’ll provide a .doc character sheet for you to fill out with stats so there is NO need to make an alias. However, please be reminded that PC selection will be based on the ‘fluff’ and not the ‘crunch’.

I will accept character submissions (either post here or email me) until Tuesday November 20, 2012.
Game on!

Dotting as I'm really interested in some role-playing...

I will think about this. I have been wanting to play an Inquisitor. Let me see what the brain can think up for a back story.

For any and all crunch I will be using hero lab. It can generate a very nice character sheet. I will post it when I am done.

I really want to play a game set in Golarion as I have never had the pleasure, but I have no idea how to post a character here. If you would just show me how, I'd make a character worthy of the setting.

Dotting for interest. I've got a couple of characters that might be suitable. Could you provide a few more details for the characters - i.e. starting gold, party balance, etc?

Hello. Have played face to face and PbP. Read your PbEM guide: interested.

Will submit a hlf-elven urban ranger from Carrion Hill by the deadline.

Good luck recruiting!

I'm glad to see there's interest in a PBEM.

@Birch33: the game format supports roleplaying quite well.

@Grand Moff Vixen: Inquisitor should be fine and I'm familiar with Herolabs but not everyone has the program.. Once I have characters selected I like to print out the character sheets for easy reference so it helps a lot to have them all in one same format.

@Luna Silvertear: As stated in the post, there is no need to post anything 'here' to play this game. All I need for character selection is the 'fluff' part and you already know how to post that. Once characters are selected. I'll send out a .doc document for you to fill out (that's real easy).

@maggie mcknife: As stated, starting gold is average for 5th level (10,500 gp). With regards to party balance, I'll be selecting the PCs so I'll try to make the party balanced. I haven't selected anyone yet if that is your question.

@HolmesandWatson: The website also has turn recaps, characters, etc to give you an idea of what the game will be like. An urban ranger would be quite fitting for the game.

All: I like forward to your submissions.

By chance, did you mean 10,500 and not 105,000? I am thinking that would be a lot of money.

Yes, thank you; already fixed.

Totally interested. Will give the character concept some thought and email you a submission by the deadline. I'm leaning toward a sorcerer at the moment.

I'll be submitting a character to this game so long as no one minds a Varisian Bard or Bard/Paladin.

Cool. PBEM sounds interesting. I'll submit a cleric or a combat rogue by the deadline.

I think I will bow out of this one. Too many things pulling my time away that I don't want to try and get into a game only to drag it down for others.

Good luck everyone!

Sorry, everyone, I got accepted to another PF game and am currently running another in real life. I'm going to bow out.

Good luck with the adventure! PbEM sounds fascinating. I'd love to give it another go when I have more time.

I'm sad to see a couple of you bow out but I understand.

I received two characters from the boards and one from outside.

Will Laruuk and Luna Silvertear be submitting? Please confirm.

I have also two more people who promised submittals.

That will make a total of seven (7) potential submittals; not bad for a PBEM.

Only a couple of days left...

I am very interested, and while I haven't played in a PBEM before I'm definitely not against new experiences!

I'm going to submit a wizard and I have a few questions for you!

For illusion spells, what do you consider interaction? Especially sound based spells. Is it simply hearing it, or would a person have to spend an action to study it, the way one would too touch a wall to see if it was real?

Is there any way I can make a few spellcraft checks to get some extra spells (via the studying option?)

This question is asking for an acception to admit something from Ultimate Magic. I understand completely if you'll hold to the Core and Advanced books only, but it's a feature that I really like so I'll risk angering the DM wrath to ask anyway. May I take an Arcane discovery instead of a bonus feat for the Wizard's fifth level? Specifically, I'd like to take Split Slot

Hey Marko,

Glad you are interested; I hope you like PBEMs.

Here are answers to your questions:

- illusion spells need to be interacted with (at least spend an action) to gain a saving throw;

- no extra spells, sorry; and

- split slot instead of a feat is OK.

Let me know if you have other questions.

I look forward to your character.

Do you have an upward limit for Background size?

Marko wrote:

The short answer is keep it under 1,000 words.

The long answer is to take a look at the characters accepted for my other PBEM on the website linked on my first post to have an idea of what I'm looking for.

Crap... okay, give me a minute. XD

Okay, Background, picture, personality and appearance sent. Here is a link to the character sheet I forgot to put in the message.

Dr. Adam Sylvari and his familiar, Rare

Edit: Updated with new links

I will definitely be submitting.

Working on the backstory now.

Background, Character Sheet, Gear List, Spell List, and Sketch sent.

PBEM sounds great. I'm new to the pathfinder boards but have played PBP over at wizards for quite some time. I've always enjoyed the writing aspect of the game.

I'll review you PBEM background links you've provided and try to pull together a character this evening. Given the short time left, perhaps I'll just focus on fluff and backstory and worry about character stats/build for later.

Here's another update on submittals (probably the last since characters will be accepted until tomorrow Tuesday November 20 at 8:00 PM EST).

These are the characters I've received:

- male human urban ranger,
- female human rogue,
- male elf wizard,
- female human sorcerer,
- male human magus, and
- female cleric

Characters forthcoming (?):

- male fighter, and
- paladin or bard/paladin.

Hey Grawln,

The 'fluff' will be enough for this stage but feel free to send stats if you have them.

Fabian

That is a half elf male urban ranger...

Yes, right you are; thanks for the prompt correction.

May I present, Kiergard of Desna (Grawln Alias), for your consideration. I'm assuming he'll likely be a Fighter/Cleric. As I'm still learning the ropes of this forum, let me know if you have any issues viewing him.

Thank you very much for taking the time to put together a character for this game.

As I’ve mentioned before, I both like having choices but don’t like telling people their characters were not chosen. This decision was very difficult since I had nine very good submittals for only 4-5 spots. I ended up going with five people but that still meant leaving four (very good) characters out.

The party is composed by:
- Male half-elf urban ranger played by Bob;
- Female human cleric of Sarenrae played by Shari;
- Male elf wizard played by Marko;
- Female human sorceress played Steve; and
- Male human fighter/cleric of Desna played by Joe.

If you were not selected, the only thing I can offer at this time is to follow along either by reading the turns on the website (to be set up soon) or following along by joining the email list and receiving all the information that goes back and forth for the game. Please let me know if either of these options interests you.

Happy gaming!

Sorry to the guys who didn't make it. I hope you get into a game you're interested in soon!

To the guys that did, hey there! It's good to meet you all and I look forward to gaming with you.

Hey everyone,

Exactly 2 months into the game (and 22 turns), I am need of a player to join our on-going PBEM game because a player had to drop out due to real-life issues.

We are currently about 1/3 into this first adventure module and will easily be playing a few more months.

We have the four basic roles filled out (female cleric of Sarenrae, male Ulfen fighter/cleric (4/1), female sorceress, and male half-elven urban ranger) so I'm willing to entertain any character class.

Please see the first recruitment post above for additional guidelines and here's the website where you can read about characters, turns, and additional information: https://sites.google.com/site/pbemcarrionhill/home.

I'm hoping to be able to close this recruitment process by this Friday January 25, 2013.

Either email me (fabian.benavente *at* gmail.com) or post your submission here.

Please get back to me with any questions and happy gaming!

Submitting Rufus "Bastion" Elanwright for your consideration.

I have sent you an e-mail with my character, Murdoch Williams.

@Rufus: PC looks good. We'll have to work to tie him to Mayor Heggry and Carrion Hill in his recent background. Stats also seem OK but I'll take a closer look should he be selected.

@T-Mix: I never received your email so please double check spelling on the email address or send it to me via personal message on this site.

Thanks to both of you for submitting.
