Expedition to Tharkad-Kûl

Game Master Patrick Curtin

Hello there all,

I am currently wondering if there would be any interest in an old styled 'Dungeon Crawl' type of game, using the new Beta Pathfinder rules. No heavy RPing, just a chance to take the new rules for a test drive.

I was thinking start bare bones, 1st level, 32 PT IC buy. The setting would be a classic old style dungeon with levels of monsters, pit traps, fun puzzles to decode, etc. There would be a small town nearby that caters to adventurer's needs (i.e. supplies, lodging and healing)

I need to improve my basic DM skillz, and I would like to become more familiar with the new Beta rules. I figure a game like this will give an excellent chance to see how things work without coming up with a lot of heavy backstory baggage.

I figure six players, two alternates. First come first served. As this will be a combat-heavy game, I would need a once-a-day posting committment.

The Exchange

I would like to do that.

Cheers

Patrick once again I curse my ISP.

Count me in. Interested in giving the new Sorceror a test run.

The Exchange

Maybe a rogue or monk.

Sovereign Court

Sure Patrick...I'm tempted to test out a Cleric...mainly to see if they really have been nerfed as much as people say they have been.

ooo! ooo! ooo! I need game.

Seriously, I'd love to get in on this. Don't know how good I'll be at posting every day BUT I will do my best to post five times a week. Who knows maybe I'll be posting twice a day.

I think I'd like to remake a fighter I only got to play for a couple of sessions a few years back.

AHHHHHHHHHH ok you know my ISP is crazy right now and i may not be able to do once a day if it acts up and the worse should be over. Also this isn't as RP heavy as the very fun planescape one so even with ISP nuttiness I think I can keep up. So if its ok with you I'd love to get on another game of yours. And try a bard.

Consider it testdriven...Lone Bard (Jynyfyr Kayn) clears first level of Castle Caldwell with Diplomacy, Sleep and Lullaby spells. It was incredible. By sheer luck of Diplomacy checks (the DC requirements were pretty low anyway - the original text suggests that most of the intelligent monsters will leave if told that the premisis is being occupied and that thugs will be sent to clear it - the Bandits at the back are the only real threat).

I dont know about the other classes yet...but you will probably want go for the second level of Castle Caldwell as a group - a very "Orc Guarding a chest in a room" kind of level.

It looks like you have six, but if anyone drops out or cancels, could I be first replacement?

The Exchange

If this goes ahead, can we use the Beta point buy system? Maybe High or Epic Fantasy?

Cheers

I'd like to play in this also. I could try out a monk perhaps, or a fighter.

Liberty's Edge

Count me as the second alternate, I s'pose.

Edit: Damn, Rimrock ninja'd me by 29 seconds *shakes fist*

Can the chest be a pie?

Patrick if ya have the room I would love to play!!!

OK this is my WiP character..more to come

O.O

Wow folks ...thanks for the input! I am happy to see there is so much enthusiasm. I am pressed for time, so this going to be quick.

I post Weds thru Sun fairly regularly (usually multiple times, esp. on weekends). Mon and Tues I get in a short burst in the morning if I can drag myself up early enough. I post on Eastern Standard Time, usually early morning before 630 AM and late afternoon/evening 530 PM until @9 PM (when the wife is due back from work). Weekends I check in a lot while doing chores around the house.

I am a realtive n00b when it comes to running Pathfinder and for that matter 3.5 in general. I am much more a storyteller, as Seeker can tell you. I am hoping to improve my knowlege of the Beta and my overall DM adjucation skills. In that vein, I ask that all involved forgive me if I make an error. Please always feel free to speak up if I post something egregiously wrong, that's the whole point! :) This will hopefully evolve into a good learning experience for us all.

I will accept everyone who has posted thus far, with the last two posted as alternates. This will be a stripped down game, but of course I will not be able to resist the pull of storytelling altogether. It will be dangerous, there will be lots of killer moments, so keep a spare character concept on tap! This setting is pure dungeon, so factor your skills accordingly.

I think that I am going to have to close out applications at this time as I have already exceeded the threshold I set. If for some reason you character needs to post and you are not able to do I reserve the right to DMPC them through to keep game flow running (though I will not do this unless absolutely neccessary)

EDIT: Epic Fantasy buy sounds good, FW, create accordingly.

I will be posting again tomorrow.

Divel is min/maxed stats to try and survive. The rest is just a copy of my other Alpha character for now.

Next I'll deal with his skills and feats.

Hit points, what method do you want to use?

Intro for the other players who may or may not know me. I'm British, play in several games and run two others. Posting is not an issue.

My rogue has a very low wisdom, if he dies I'll definitely have a sub ready (or you could give one of the alternates a chance.

Cheers

Sovereign Court

British too...running one game here playing in two more...daily posts no problem

Question: are we using any of the the variant starting hit point options or is it just hit die + Con? I personally favour racial hit points but thats just my style

I guess that puts me and Larcifer as alternates.

*plots how to kill one of the players*

No, seriously, I'd be happy to take over for anyone that can't make it. I'll be waiting.

Hey Jagyr if we flank one of the other PCs that gets 1 of us in then we can work from the inside :) Good luck all, hope to be in soon!

I think you miscalculated your ranged attack bonuses. You used your strength mod.

Here's my Sorceror. Tough, desert rat. I'm posting from New York and this is an alias of VulcanStormwrath, the name I usually post under.

The Exchange

That must be it, Mark.

Or I haven't done anything but stats yet. Skills and Feat next.

Cheers

OK, quick post, will be on later today to begin stuff.

Players:

French Wolf
Seekerofshadowslight
Wellard
Yellowdingo
Eldon Tindertwig
Rimrock
Kissmedarkly
Vulcanstormwrath

Alternates:
Jagyr Ebonwood
Larcifer

Sound out if I forgot someone. If anyone is having second thoughts please post, as the two alternates seem very eager to go :). Alternates: If this goes well with opening I might open another PbP using the dungeon so don't abandon hope!

Skills and Feat chosen. I should finish the rest by tomorrow.

It maybe me but I have to use Perception (wisdom based) to search for traps now. Not sure I understand the logic behind that one.

I can disable them fine but I'll need one or two scouts to set them off first. Any takers?

Cheers

This is my name...not much else done right now. Human bard

Well at least if the trap involves stone we've got a dwarf with high Wis. Between that and my Detect Magic we shouldn't be too badly off.

My experience with elves is somewhat limited. They appear to hold little love for the desert sands.

Ok folks, started up both the discussion and the game thread. Can't seem to open them yet, but they are there under the moniker Expedition to Tharkad-Kûl. I will post links when I can!

Edit:

Game Thread

Got one!

Discussion thread

Got the other!

Also folks, HP I think I like the 2X max + con mod i.e: (max hp x2)+con mod. Just to make you all a little sturdier.

Can anyone who posted an interest in participating in this game before please migrate to the discussion thread (link above) and state their continuing interest? This holds for alternates.
