" I'm sorry, I didn't mean to! Those three twos ya got were pretty super, dontcha know. You were trying to get something good and got it, and I just got lucky, so you totally get bonus points or something, ya?"

"Bonus points," he smiles weakly. "That's nice of you to say."

Grand Lodge

Jallena looks up from her bartending to examine Garridan's game. She opens her mouth to ask a question, then decides not to.

Garridan, check your PM.

"Well, here goes."

She breathes deeply, holding her breath as she shakes the dice.

1d6 ⇒ 5
1d6 ⇒ 6
1d6 ⇒ 2

She exhales and smiles.

"Well there ya go! I just got lucky on that first one. I betcha I couldn't roll the same thing two times in a row if I tried."

She picks up the dice then tosses them back onto the table.

1d6 ⇒ 5
1d6 ⇒ 6
1d6 ⇒ 2

Her eyes widen.

"Aw jeez."

He pumps his fist, "You've got it! Its amazing" Waving people over, "Come watch Madge roll dice, its incredible. Do it again, please."

Turt looks over at Cataree and says "wait your from the wilderness!?" he gets up and power walks over to her table pulling a chair, placing the chair over next to Cataree and sitting down he asks
"so you know how it's like then, to live off the land with the beautiful scene of nature all around you" he takes a large breath of air, as if imagining a forest around him.

Madge stands up, shaking her head furiously.

"Oh, nonono! I don't want to make any fuss. I'm probably not rolling them right or something, ya know?"

She looks at the people that responded to Garridan's waves and starts giving a forced laugh.

"Just a joke, ya? Oh, you're a character Garridan, haha! Nothing to see here, folks! My friend was just having a laugh, dontcha know?"

No, I'm not joking. Shaking his head, "You're the real deal" he says getting a little frustrated. "I need to take a break anyway. He pushes himself up from the table, leaving the dice on the table, he says, "You all continue to play if you like I need some air, I'll be back in a few." He heads out the front door for some air.

IRL time for bed, good luck all! Everyone thanks for the RP!

Back from work, which means I get to Role a little more before the tributes are selected.

After watching a few rounds and seeing how simple the game was Ederin begrudgingly grabs the dice. As the crowd gathers around Madge he discreetly rolls them in front of him.

Toad: 1d6 ⇒ 11d6 ⇒ 31d6 ⇒ 5

Dodgy dice anyway. He says as he quietly pushes them back toward the newly famous halfling. He shifts over to Cataree and her new companion.

Lived in the city me whole life but I have to admit I'm keen on the outdoors. Do a bit of...roaming in my free time wheb I have it, love walking through the frontier and knowing there's nothing man made 'round me. Think I piced that up from my folks.

Why all of these people are headed for the Gold Goblin? There must be something happening there. I'd best ask now that I can. Pushing back his natural unsociability, Izkrael joins the others at the table. Seeing that the game of chance ended, he takes the opportunity to ask to whoever is sitting next to him: What's going on at the Gold Goblin? Why everyone seems to be heading there?. To take on a more friendly appearance, he takes off his hood, revealing his long black hairs and even blacker eyes.

He takes a look around himself-all people here seemed to be eagerly wating for something. They even classified the blot as a boring topic. There had to be something important around.

A shadow loomed over the table of the gamblers. Garvey having now walked to their table was standing and watching the proceedings of the game. His green eyes looked as if they were searching for something within the game they played, like there was a secret behind the dice they saw and he did not "So you just roll the die and whoever gets a certain set of numbers wins?" The warrior stroked his scared chin as he contemplated whatever anyone found enjoyable in such a game.

Garridan comes back to the table just in time to hear Izkrael's question, seeing the dice laying on the table he replies, "I've started to wonder that my self, it doesn't appear to be for the gambling," while he rolls his eyes and shakes his head.

"As for me, I hope win some coin and scare up some work," he says as he scoops up his dice placing them back in his pouch.

Garvey wrote:

"Rumor has it that's what's supposed to happen, but you couldn't tell buy this lot." With a shrug of his shoulders, "In some circles it's also customary for coin to be bet, but I don't believe it, I think someone made that part up," he adds with a sarcastic tone, taking a large gulp of wine.

"And when you can't pay that money they take the clothes on your back, the place you live in and sell your family into slavery" An unhealthy smile appeared the crimson haired mercenary's face "All over the roll of a couple dice...well my captain once told me that wars were started over less" A resounding laugh erupted from Garvey's mouth and his hand slapped the table multiple times.

Gambling, uhm? That sounds like something that could easily lure my contact.

"I thank you, good man. And as for reaching the Gold Goblin together, well...", I'd prefer to go alone, but yesterday's worthless walk should teach me something,"...I think that would be the best thing. This city can be dangerous, especially at night".

Izkrael looks at the man standing in front of him (Garridan). Humans...They're so diverse from one another that they don't have preconceptions, even before a couple of black eyes. And they're so quick to make friends. I can see why some elves are attracted by them. Izkrael tries to smile to his interlocutor in sign of appreciation, but the best he can do is to warp is face into a forced smirk.

"Alright, since we're going together...does someone know where this Gold Goblin is?", Izkrael says referring to the other people at the table.

Elves, always so reserved. With and audible sigh he continues to brood, "Another non drinker, great, why do you try me so Cayden Cailean."

Looking to the elf, "Don't worry it's close by, just follow the crowd." Or don't.

Grand Lodge

Turt shakes his head at the at the "follow the crowd" comment and finally finishes his ale
"stay away from the crowd, thats asking to be pickpocketted"
Turt grimaces " trust me, personal experience!"

" Thank you! About bloody time someone else here shares my thoughts on the matter. You're all nice enough folk but none of you is strifin' nearly enough about keeping your tops where they belong. "

Ederin nods at Garvey with respect. " Though you and Steve over here look dressed up enough to dance with the best of 'em."

He looks around the room and thinks, Whatever does go down at the Goblin, this lot will make it interesting at the very least. .

Izkrael looked at the two humans giving him opposite opinions. And here we go again. At least they're welcoming. Their intentions are good, no doubt about it. This time, Izkrael manages to smile sincerely, watching the human diversity of opinions just in front of him. "I'd follow both of your advices if I could".

I think I will follow the crowd, but at a distance. And this man in particular, he seems to know what he's doing. While he is thinking to himself, Izkrael's eyes fall upon the wooden holy symbol carried by the man who had talked to him first. A faithful of the Drunken Hero? Well, he has helped me out, now I will return the favor. "Keep your friends close" always told me Avery-"and your enemies closer", but that's another matter. Let's begin with "friends".

"Before we go, I propose to have a drink to attract the lucky spirits." This will certainly please him. Besides, a drink can never hurt. Izkrael was used to drink alcoholics. Growing up among humans and being raised by a human couple, drinking had always been a natural part of his life-not the most important one, but still something that could help to drive away bad thoughts. He knew that most of the elves apparently refused to drink, but they never gave him the chance to ask them why, and so he never saw something wrong with having a drink or two.

"Your concern for the proper placement of our heads is well appreciated, and probably justified. I've heard a few things about the Gold Goblin, and the fellow Saul, who runs it. Apparently he was a crime lord. By the sound of it the worst crime lord. And by worst I don't me terrible, that is I don't mean terrible in the sense of a very bad person. He probably is terrible in that sense. By worst I mean bad at it. Not very good at being a crime lord. He lost everything and would have died but his own worst enemy, and by that I mean most extremely committed enemy and notbad at it because he was assuredly good at it... Umm... Saul's worst enemy considered it a punishment to let him live!"

"So the Gold Goblin is Saul's version of legitimate business enterprise. That he was a crime lord means he's familiar with the possibility of crime occurring near his establishment, so maybe he's ready for that? On the other hand he was a poor crime lord and he's trying to to this in a place where he is so very effectively hated. So maybe he's going to attract the kind of attention he's not prepared to deal with?"

Dimitrio shrugs his shoulders, "So a former crime lord running a gambling hall. Seems legit."

He smiles at the gnome, "So how is it that you know all this information? I wonder. Have you had past dealings with this Saul?"

Dimitrio's hopes that his take on levity is not misunderstood but One never knows with gnomes...

"Let me tell you I've tried to to that a great deal in my life. Especially since coming to Riddleport, and it is hard work! Sometimes I try one and then the other but I feel the real art is in doing both at the same time. You've got to try and not let them cancel each other out though, otherwise you're doing nothing which is what I do sometimes.

Perhilion watches Madge roll dice again.

"Maybe we should bring Madge along and she can act like she knows nothing about gambling and is certain to be terrible at it and a bunch of people will bet against her and then she can roll and make a bunch of money! Is there a word for that? I guess they're not going to bet against a halfling. I've got a better idea, we let people think I'm a halfling and they'll all bet with me. Just be ready to move when they find out I'm not."

Quote:
He smiles at the gnome, "So how is it that you know all this information? I wonder. Have you had past dealings with this Saul?"

"He's never had the pleasure. Crime seems like a very literal dead end occupation for me. Of course most occupations are in the long run, let's just say crime doesn't seem that great. I've been kicking around here for a few months now. People don't really notice I'm around unless I'm asking wildly inappropriate questions and I learn things both ways. They either talk freely because I'm not there or they say more than they want because they need me to shut up."

Ryssa nearly choked on her drink when he explained about who the owner of the Gold Goblin was.

"Oh wow. I guess we better be careful tonight then. Thank you for letting us know Perhilion."

The tiefling smiled at him as she hissed.

Garridan's ears perk up at Perhillion's remarks, "Saul' you said, you wouldn't happens to know what his last name might be?" If it's Vankaskerkin I owe him a debt I don't know I'll be able to repay, except perhaps with blood.

Hearing the gnome's conversation with another human sitting near, Izkrael tightens up his eyebrows. How much does he talk?

Then, much to his surprise, the gnome addresses him directly. Izkrael listen with a perplexed expression the gnome's words, then he relaxes his facial muscles in a smile. "Sorry, I'm afraid I didn't get a single word of yours. Here, drink something with us and relax.". He's extactly the right person I need to gather information in this city without having to speak with every single person I meet. He does the hard work of getting people talk, and I assure he doesn't get killed in the process. Seems like a good solution.

"You seem good at getting people talkative", says Izkrael to the gnome, Remember-you can use all the allies you can get in this slum, "If you promise me to ask some questions on my behalf tonight at the Gold Goblin, you won't need to worry about your head anymore, I assure you" concludes Izkrael, smirking proudly and slightly moving his shoulders to show the longbow hidden under his cloak.

Raising his cup, "I'm always for a drink to luck", he takes a large swallow. " "However, the customary ritual for luck is pouring out the contents on the floor." he raises this cup again spilling the remaining contents onto the floor as he says "To luck! Not that the Lucky Drunk ever seemed to care about my fortunes"

"I sure do Garridan. It's Vancaskerkin, It's a well known name around here for being one that most people seem reluctant to say."

Perhilion regards Izkrael with a little bemusement. "All this concern for my head of late is very gratifying. I never dream it was so close to flying off my shoulders at any moment. That's actually a flat lie right there, I've dreamed that repeatedly. Anyway, ok you want questions asked but you don't want to ask them. Fine. What sorts of questions do you want asked? And of who? And why don't you want to ask them? You don't seem shy. It's alright if you are shy I understand that, but you don't really seem shy. The people who asked me to come here and ask, questions asked me because they're too busy and far a way to come and ask themselves. But you're right here."

GM Only:

Perception DC 23:
You notice a man outside the window. What makes him interesting is his cowl - covering his face and head. Not too uncommon in Riddleport to be sure, but it’s so hot! Seems unusual. He wiggles his fingers a bit, clearly articulating some form of spell…

Perception DC 23 AND Spellcraft DC 16:
The man outside the window casts Charm Person through the window.

A dark man in flowing robes, bearing the sigil of a cyphermage strides into the pub and walks directly to Bartleby. He orders a bottle and mumbles some pleasantries handing Bartleby a pouch. He takes the bottle and strides out into the street heading east deeper into the leeward district (away from the cyphermage hall across the Velashu river to the west).

Perception DC 18 - separate roll from above please:
The cyphermage leans in to Bartlebe and whispers, ”Give this to those folks over there with my compliments. Pay attention, that one, that one, that one, that one, and that one there. No one else, OK? Thanks.” His gestures are subtle, but he’s pointing to elements of your group!

Bartleby weaves his way through the crowd to the group. He carefully opens a simple leather pouch and removes some coins and small vials from within. ”Man at the bar asked me to give these to you. Oh, and there’s a letter too.” he hands a newly minted Korvosan gold sail (1gp) and a vial to each of you. He’s surprised when one of the coins goes to Jallena.

If you’re on this list, congratulations! You have been selected for this AP and have a gold coin to get in this evenings contest.

Thank you all for submitting applications. They were very well done, and I very much appreciate the effort they took to do.

To avoid showing favorites, I’ve avoided favoriting any particular post, but there were some really good ones in there. Well done everyone - the decision was tough to make, and we spent hours last night talking about each application. If you want more feedback on why you were or were not chosen, please feel free to PM me. Happy to talk about it further if you like. Thanks again.

A note to the successful applicants
You don’t have every role in your party. I’m a huge fan of making do with the table that shows up, but if you want to talk amongst yourselves and rebuild a character or two I’m fine with that. I picked each of you for your role playing and writing skills - not any particular character build. Chat about it in the discussion thread please which I’ll be opening soon along with the gameplay thread.

Also, I’m going to PM each of you my gmail address. Please strongly consider chatting and emailing with me and the other players. Outside conversations help the campaign go more smoothly, particularly if you can’t post, have a confusing question (often related to maps), or just need some more private information for your character. Not everything fits neatly into the gameplay and discussion threads.

Finally, feel free to roll to see what happened above, but save it for the gameplay thread. The actions and activities in the recruitment thread actually happened and are the beginnings of the campaign. I'll repost elements of this post there shortly.

A dangerous man for sure, though I'm at a loss on how to repay him for his actions. With the look of a man enjoying a good meal he says the name, "Vancaskerin"

Congratulations to everyone selected and everyone else as well. It was a fun application process and being selected for these things is always a long shot. Enjoy! I hope I see some of you around in the future.

Gonna miss you Perhiion thanks for the great hooks and RP

Ditto, your posts were great fun to read, hope we run into a game together one of these days!

Good luck guys and have fun! I'm sure this will be a great adventure! I'm very sad for not being a part of it, but all of our submission were good and certainly you deserved to obtain those spots. Game on!

Congratulations to those that made it through!

Now I regret not having participated in the RP scenes, but I like keeping my alias list neat. Let's see what can I do with Larandel. Any sincere and unfiltered feedback will be certainly appreciated even if hard, it is the only way to improvement.

And good luck to everybody! :)

Kaylayne (formerly Jallena) looks down at the gold coin, confused. She looks at Bartlebe and shrugs. She likes gold coins, and if someone wanted to tip her, she'd take it. She makes the coin disappear into her coin purse and returns to work.

Soon enough she'd leave her shift at the Gold Goblin and serving to the gambler hopefuls. Shaking her head, she wondered how much longer she'd need to work two shifts to get fixed...to get whole again. If it wasn't too late. I hope it's not too late. I'm only mostly dead. I still see myself in the mirror.

Kaylayne is snapped out of her thoughts by some spilt milk. She grabs his dirty bar rag and moves to sop up the spill, still wondering why this one bar in all of Riddleport served milk. It was going to be a long night.

Thanks to all who participated. I didn't envy the hard choices that GM Euan had to make.

Congratulations to those who made it through. I'm sad I won't get to play with you :(

Congrats, guys! I'll be reading with interest.

Back at you Garridan, Ederin and Madge. And everyone else. Also I would gladly welcome any level of feedback from anyone in public or by PM on RP or background.

Congratulations to those who made it! Have fun adventuring!
