Seeing the boy down, Dimitrio spits on him, "Life was too kind to you. You should have suffered as much as you made others suffer."

Kaylayne, the magnificent battle marsupial, raises one of her power legs to coup de jerk the drow, but lowers it as Dimitrio does the work before she can. Tiryin's death greatly reduces her anger and rage.

She spins, releasing the magics that had so wildly shaped her form and changes back into Kaylayne so she might speak and heal.

"Nice work, Dimi, Allarnon," Kaylayne says, standing over the dead body and seeing clearly in the dark. "Ederin? You okay?"

Kaylayne casts Detect Magic, while something strikes her.

"Where is Lief? Anyone see?"

Ederin clicks his heels and follows the group into the tunnel, scanning the area illuminated by his sword for any signs of Leif. When he sees the drow at the parties feet he scowls and considers firing an arrow into the dead body, just for the hell of it.
Guess I still got some drow in me. He thinks.

"Yeah, I'm holdin' up. What 'bout the kid though? Any o' you see the flash o' light that took 'im?"

Allarnon shakes his head. "Sorry, I was busy with this bastard and the giant spider." Seeing no immediate enemies Allarnon closes a couple of his more life-threatening wounds with a lick of his tongue.

Ederin scans the tunnel, but sees nothing of Lief, or any other opponent. Allarnon heals a little and also looks about. Dimitrio slits Tiryin’s throat (coupe de grace). Kaylayne casts detect magic and looks about, but… Lief is gone…

Lief:
I failed to add that you are blinded by the light and cannot see for the same duration as the stun.

You hear a shrill whistle, as if a warning has been raised. On the plus side, you feel the warmth of the sun on your face… On the minus side, someone is relieving you of your weapons and other gear as you stand stunned. At least they haven’t slit your throat, yet.

The cave is quiet save for the slight gurgling of the giant spider, still oozing fluids into the water. Lief is definitely gone, and the gate looms large and dark where he once stood. The two braziers lie dormant on either side. There is but dim light from the phosphorescent lichen in the pool.

Everyone may take three rounds worth of actions, more or less. Basically just a few moments of activities please.

Kaylayne roots away any magics on Tiryin or the spider as magical auras are more evident to her. She nods to Allarnon and Ederin to continue to heal up. She grabs one magical item in round 13, then another in round 14.

"He hasn't been gone that long. He's probably on his way back now," Kaylayne says of Lief.

"Let's get moving. Lief is probably on the other side. Let's hope it was an accident and he didn't intend to leave us here."

He looks at the looming gate, "I think we should hurry. This gate may close or something soon. Layne, can you work it?"

Tiryin has a few items in his possession that please the party. (I think take-10 IDs all this). Potion cure moderate wounds, a bunch of empty flasks, +1 keen double shortsword (exotic two-handed weapon - double weapon and weapon finesse-able), MW throwing wedge (like a starknife), bracers of armor +2, ring of protection +2, and a belt of dexterity +2 (he got his AC largely from dipping in a variety of classes and insane stats and magical boosts one of which I totally forgot in the fight).

You don't see any obvious way to open the gate in the dark.

Able to see a little better, Dimitiro tries to open the gate, but is unsuccessful. The light from his dancing lights seems to dim the closer he gets to the gate itself.

GM_Euan:

He feels the hand crossbow slip from his paralyzed fingertips. The magic is entirely unexpected, having overwhelmed his bodily functions in so far as he can't move, speak, or see. He can't understand it, for all Travaran's answers, so his mind wanders over the possibilities.

He could be dead. The dissolution may not be complete, but he might be headed there, losing things slowly, but surely. He's seen it, in old, old relatives, though he cared little to understand it then. It made him uneasy. It made him look away.

He could be trapped. There might have been magics in place to defend the lands beyond from anything- anything- breaching the Gate against the will of those controlling it. This might be some planar pocket, holding him indefinitely. The horrifying thought runs rampant in Lief's mind, never leaving the center of attention for very long.

He could still be standing in front of the Gate, staggered by the sheer power of the magic. He can only hope that Tiryin is well on the run, and that he'll regain his senses, and weapon, before the others return...

Ederin takes an opportunity to heal himself a couple times with one of the wands he holds. He wants to search for Lief but he knows in his present condition he runs the risk of being taken out again.

He glares at Kay when she starts looking through the magical items, unsure if she's looking for something to help them, or just sating her curiosity but once he's a little more healed he looks as far as he can with his own light and tries to find anything that may assist them with the gate.

Lief:
You hear in the darkness of your sight, "Now don't do anything hasty there son. We just have a few questions and it's important you remain calm, nothing to get in a twist over."

The voice is light and airy, and speaking in flowing common, though it doesn't feel like that's the speakers original tongue. There's a strong accent to it... "Where did you just come from? This gate has been dysfunctional for a very long time."

The group tries to figure out what to do next. Please feel free to post another few rounds of activities. We're no longer in initiative, but things are happening on either side of the gate that could effect each other, so one step at a time. Well, a few steps. :)

Seeing no immediate threat Allarnon shifts forms again back into his grizzled and awkward human form. Reaching into his pack he pulls forth one of the healing wands and stitches himself up further.

Lief almost wets himself, when he hears the voice. The sheer vulnerability of his situation, and he's helpless to understand how he must appear to someone calling out to him. His head moves! He almost jerks it side to side, to make sure, but he restrains himself. He turns it to face the direction of the voice, nodding slowly, sightlessly. He makes a guess, for what it may be worth at present.

"I have fled, from Zirnakaynin. Where have I arrived? The Gate, it should have opened, and stayed open. I don't think that's happened, as I've been paralyzed. My companions shouldn't be too long, as long as the Gate works for them, also."

Lief strains to see, but reminds himself to blink at regular intervals, to keep up appearances.

Kaylayne returns Dimi's words with a look of disgust.

"Don't rush me, Dimi. Not now. Not while we barely have Ederin on his feet and I'm not even sure how the bear is still standing. We can move after they get their feet," Kaylayne snaps back. It's only been about 24 seconds in game since Tiryin died. No need to rush.

"Take a deep breath, get a hold of yourself, and keep focus on what we are doing here. And see if those drow you killed have any notes or information on them. Or rings or insignias. Our elf friends above will want them should they attempt another infiltration in the future."

Kaylayne will continue to scan for useful collectibles while Ederin and Allarnon get themselves whole.

A few seconds later he stepped up to the gate, "Here, let me try to activate it."

A flash of bright light, bright as the sun, blinds everyone (very briefly). When it fades Dimitrio is no where to be seen.

Dimitrio:
You are stunned and blinded, though you feel an extreme heat from somewhere above you. You hear an exclamation, in elven, and quickly feel hands upon you, stripping you of your weapons. You'll recover in a moment...

Lief:
You hear a pop and a sort of sizzle, and an exclamation, in elven. A few curt whistled commands and you suspect another has joined you.

Your eyes clear, a bit, but you are mildly blinded by the sunlight from above. Your ioun stone is bright, but nothing beats the warm brightness of the sun.

You stand in a clearing, and you can vaguely see Dimitrio standing next to you, clearly stunned and blinded. Behind you, you see a gate, covered in vines and clearly in some disrepair. You can't imagine how it worked at all...

Surrounding you is a small group of elves, bows at the ready, and all watching the pair of you. More come every round, some onlookers, some clearly troops. The leader, clearly, has only just arrived. He's a reasonably tall elf and seems noble by his bearing and by the way folks are treating him.

"Dimitrio, you're alright. Your full function will return shortly, give it time. We are being met with a full contingent of elves. I strongly suggest you remain calm, when your voice returns to you."

Lief turns from the dancer, to the elves. "We are glad to have left behind the Underdark. We have allied ourselves with Crying Leaf, and Eviana. We would be allies here, as well. I would know where 'here' is, if you would be so kind." He makes no sudden movements, mostly looking in the direction of the leader elf.

Allarnon gets startled by the bright light and leaps into the air. Clearing his eyes with his hands he looks around. "Where did Dimitrio go now!?"

Seeing just a couple of them left he begins to get frightened slightly as his hands shakes with the wand. "Something is taking them!"

Euan, Lief:
The shock of being blinded and stunned was overwhelming. The fact that he did not understand elven made it even worse.

He tried to thrash, twist, and turn trying to get free from the hands trying to pin him down, "Get off os me or you'll be sorry."

Hearing Lief's voice calmed him down some, "Where are we? Did the gate work? Where are we?"

Is Lief speaking in elven to the elves?

Dimitrio, Lief:
Thrashing aside, Dimitro is disarmed quickly and efficiently, but no hands attempt to hold him beyond that. You both stand freely. Lief, and the elves for that is what they are, are speaking common.

"You are in the village of Siavenian, a military outpost of sorts in the kingdom of Kyonin. So... this gate leads to the underdark does it? Very interesting. It is good that is has been dormant for so long. Less good that you have now re-engaged it."

"You must tell me your story, but in private. Come, let us go to more comfortable surroundings."

He waits for Dimitrio's eyes to clear before moving along.

On the drow bodies you find the usual gear (call it 1,000gp in assorted stuff for convenience) but no rings. Nothing to denote they are from the house Vonnarc.

Kaylayne gives the battle scene one last looking over in case there was something that they missed.

The gate appears, in all ways, dark and non magical. Based on your understanding of the other gates, a few things need to happen to make it function, but every gate is different. Many have keys of one sort or another, but no keys were found here. So apparently something must be done to the gate for it to function.

On close examination, it is clear that the gate was damaged in some ancient cataclysm and has, recently, been repaired. It looks ready to function.

Knowledge Arcana will help, but I think you can figure it out... maybe.

Dimitrio's relief lasted only until he got his bearings, "We can't go. Not yet. Our friends are still on the other side. In the underdark."

He looked at Lief, "Can you help them from here? I'm afraid bear-man and Shorty may not be able to activate the gate like we did."

He waited and watched for Layne, whom he was sure would come through at any moment, but was afraid for his other companions.

I only wanted to open the gate, not be thrust through it so violently. Do you mind if we wait for them? I will not argue, if you require we depart, but I hope we can be brought together, eventually."

"I'm not sure the elves here want us working with the Gate from this side, but perhaps I can understand something of it?" Lief turns to the lead elf, patting the air in front of him to indicate a moment's pause.

"Al, obviously they got through t' gate somehow. I didn't see the kid step through, but it's the same light 'at jus' took Dimitrio too. Jus' need to figure out how they did it."

Ederin steps closer to the gate and starts inspecting it with whatever light Kay and his sword manage to muster. He looks for anything that might be a switch or a way to activate it and trying to use his limited knowledge of spells and spellcraft to figure out how the device works.

As Ederin approaches the gate, his sword dims, but otherwise he's unable to note anything about the object. It stands between the braziers, cold and dark.

Lief and Dimitrio:
Lief - the gate appears in all ways to be non-magical.

The tall elf nods, "I'm Villastir." he doesn't introduce anyone else, nor do the others offer. "If they're right behind you we'll wait, but I ask you to wait in silence, and over here."

He moves you off a bit from the gate, while his troops take up defensive positions, though casually. The man himself seems rather intense, but the others stationed here seem more relaxed. As if this is a cozy duty, not serious.

"Well, I'm mostly sure I can activate it, " Kaylayne says, looking at the gate, but then stepping back. "But there is no guarantee that I can take you both along." Kaylayne looks at Ederin and Allarnon.

"I can usually manipulate magics very well, but not sure what it will take to get you both through. Rather than further split our party to ever weakening numbers, we should still together."

Kaylayne steps back.

"It is truly too bad that Lief decided to leave us when he was the best person to explain how this thing worked," Kaylayne shakes her head.

"Well, it's only been a minute or two since he left, might as well wait and see if he can find his way back. Let's give it a few minutes while I take my time trying to unravel this gate and see if I can get us all through together."

Allarnon takes a small step back. Nervous he is unsure what will happen if Ederin and Kaylayne both leave him behind. He has no clue how to work magical artifacts!

"I don't know. I honestly don't have any answers," Kaylayne says, hoping for something to click.

Lief closes his eyes, shaking his head, before turning to Villastir. "Please excuse his demeanor. He is rash, but he means well." Lief finishes his observations on this side of the Gate, then steps back as Dimitrio plays with the magics of the Gate.

"Dimitrio, you know nothing of patience. Didn't you already try and fail to open the Gate for all to pass? I certainly did, and here we stand, waiting. If you have no faith in their power over magic, I can not help you. Surely Kaylayne is intelligent enough to figure it out. Do you think she needs your help?"

Dimitrio tries to open the gate again and go back, but try as he might, the gate doesn't let him pass. This side seems to be broken.

Villastir speaks more harshly, "Get back from that gate please. No need to bring this to the level of hostility. Let's just take things slowly, shall we?"

Frustrated and a bit nervous, Dimitrio slowly back away, "Lief, are you sure there's nothing we can do from this end?"

He sighed, "I trust Layne to get through and Shorty is pretty resourceful but it's bear-man that concerns me. He was more the... natural type; you know?"

He raises his hands in a non-threatening way and complies with the elves.

"I think that if this Gate were ever able to be activated from this side, recently, the elves here would be more capable than we to see it done. No, I think we're left to wait. Be patient, and courteous to our new hosts. If the two of us could make it through, surely Kaylayne and her magics will be enough. If not, Ederin is more than able to find an alternate way out of the Underdark, though that means our companionship is at an end for now, should Kaylayne fail."

Lief moves closer to Villastir to wait. "Sorry to have troubled you with our passage through the Gate. It is a vexing situation."

Allarnon grabs his longspear and runs his hand across the metal tip. It begins to glow softly so he can see the brazier.

Grabbing a torch from his pack he cracks his flint and steel a bit and lights the torch. Standing up he stands on his toes and lights the brazier with the soft flames of the torch and hands it over to Ederin to do the same.

Ederin takes the torch from Allarnon and lights his brazier hoping it provides Kaylayne with whatever it is she thinks she can do.

"I ain't too keen on stickin' around here in the dark, but if we can't get this gate open, might as well get lookin' for some other way to find Dimitrio and Lief. I know it's only been a li'l while but I don't trust these gates."

Ederin starts tapping a foot on the ground and flexing his fingers, finding himself getting more anxious the longer the party is split.

Kaylayne nods at Ederin.

"If Lief and Dimi were able to get through, then it is likely that I could as well, but that wouldn't help you guys if you were left behind. I wish they hadn't gone off without us," Kaylayne mutters as the braziers flutter to life.


Roll 20 Map

Though little oil and charcoal remains in each brazier, they fill with fire, and then, rather quickly, pop and sizzle to life! They burn brightly, far brighter than you'd imagine they should, and the dark gate itself begins to brighten.

A portal flickers open inside the arch, but it seems... unstable somehow. You can see sunlight, and a village off a little ways, and a number of elves standing conversing with Lief and Dimitrio. Though the elves have weapons drawn, you see no bloodshed, and there does not seem to be the aura of combat.

You don't think the gate will last much longer. Do you hesitate? Or do you leap through?

Kaylayne looks at Ederin and Allarnon, waiting for them to jump through.

"What are you waiting for? Go!"

As she feels she can reopen the gate should it close, Kaylayne lets the others go first, then follows.

Seeing the gate open Allarnon doesn't even think twice. He barrels forward and leaps through the gate.
