Engineering Drow - Steampunkish

Game Master BloodWolven

What if when the Drow splintered off from the rest of the elves, magic could not be gathered in the underdark? What if they had to rely on alchemy and technology.

They would be years ahead of the dwarves in gunsmithing, steamtech, and alchemy.

Come join us create this new setting involving Drow and Steampunk. A campaign will follow!

I mostly want Solar Flare (I plan to make a Thrown weapons character).

If that doesn't fly, a Slayer/Swashbuckler or Investigator could be fun. Hm.

Solar Wind could be allowed but it needs modifications...

First some things like the Phantom Sun Stance would have to go (no magical generation of limitless ammo). Other need to be merely reflavored alongside the entire discipline. Here is the suggested reflavoring (I would also recommend GM that you allow guns and grenades to be substituted in the place of bows, crossbows and thrown weapons for Solar Wind).

The Lightbringers:

One might wonder why a race that is so sensitive to light as the Drow would employ a force called "Lightbringers"... The answer is simple, Drow will weaponize anything in their struggle for survival and with their mastery of alchemy this is not difficult. Lightbringers are Drow specially trained in the handling and use of "light" alchemy. They gain the ability to fire burning bullets and blind their enemy targets, they are a popular form of shocktroopers.

Like Rynjin?

I'm not sure why it needs to go, honestly. It simply makes Thrown weapons worthwhile. It gets rid of the item tax of the Blinkback Belt or buying a trillion enchanted daggers (or Starknives, I was planning on).

It also comes with an added downside of not allowing the materials to come through (so no Adamantine/Mithral/Etc. for DR bypassing).

I think it's a balanced addition.

The reflavoring is pretty rad though.

Part of this is coming down to no magic besides alchemy another part though is that Drow just favor firearms too heavily to go the "thrown route". However they still use hand crossbows for silent delivery of poison and so forth.

Hrm. I guess. I could happily do crossbows as well, maybe, though I hate the reloading on that. Though I think Rapid Reload makes a Hand Crossbow reload as a free?

Hm. A Bolt Ace/Stalker could be cooler in that case.

Quick question: If it's Guns Everywhere (granting Gun Training at 1st level) can we assume the Bolt Ace gets Crossbow Training at 1st too?

The Bolt Ace... I wish they have been clearer when they had made that archetype, question of note is your opposition to firearms because you dislike them or because you want to be a silent killer? (If so the Drow would have Oil of Silence which some Drow can craft thanks to master craftsman, many magical items in this game will be reflavored as "alchemical" items. Especially "magical" weapons).

I just don't like firearms a whole ton, really.

Crossbows are cooler IMO.

Then you might want to pick up craft weapons (or bribe Pharnox, destined great smith and maker of all weapons, armor and ammo) to come up with something special for you... Like a repeating crossbow of this variety (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AutomaticCrossbows). You should probably still be willing to employ guns (if nothing else a good sidearm) but you can go with a repeating crossbow on the basis of it being "silent" (Drow do appreciate this, especially for sniping and hit and run warfare).

A Hand crossbow works perfectly with Rapid Reload actually (Free action reload). I'm not averse to grenades and whatnot but I see no reason to use a firearm unless I have to (assuming I'm a crossbow specialist who's just a deadly with one as a Gun user would be).

Storywise I think regardless of class I'll go with Trainee as race/trait. Roughly he aspires to be a scout and eventually (if he proves himself) special forces of some kind in the military. A bit rough, I can hash it out a smidge better when word on whether Stalker is acceptable.

Regardless, may as well roll for stats.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 2) = 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 6) = 22
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 1) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 1) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 6) = 21
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 1, 6) = 12

Ooh, not bad.

14 17 14 11 17 11

Did these need to be in order?

I should have the first draft of my character done tonight.

One question, can I put a rank in pro (soldier) at the ranks I get a free level in?

The answer is no, you will need to spend your typical ranks for developing your profession as a soldier.

Pharnox, I looked over your character sheet and it looks in order. No fine toothed comb yet but it looks generally good. ;)

The Stalker is acceptable. Though understand that I hold the right to say that a specific maneuver or ability cannot be used. I would suggest vetting what you are planning with the class before becoming too involved with it. The veiled moon discipline will be highly restricted, and the suggestion to ban it is high on my mind.

Remember this is a low to no magic campaign. Good luck boys!

I can't find Solar Flare... Link it please.

Rynjin, order your abilities anyway you want.

Character development is under way. Get those ideas out there and get to work! Sooner the better only 10 days to go!

If I have missed your comment or question please forgive me and ask it again, possibly with a new one as well.

Sorry, it's Solar Wind style, not Solar Flare.

Just CTRL+F Solar Wind.

The main gist of it is special attacks for ranged weapons, mostly based around fireor wind. I think it can be refluffed fairly easily with alchemical fire infusions and explosives to simulate the windy knockback effects and whatnot, if that's acceptable.

I was hoping to be either a Thrown weapons specialist, or a gun or crossbow user, assuming you'd allow the Solar Wind stuff to work with those as per Pharnox's suggestion.

Yeah, okay I can see how you could alter it so that it is fluffed with alchemical agents. I will allow it but remember what I said above about it, that still holds.

Coolio. Submit these for your approval:

Stance of Piercing Rays (Stance adds 1d6 Fire damage to my ranged attacks)

Poisoner's Stance (Stance gives Poison Use and +1/2 level to Poison or Prana attack DCs)

Prana are basically attacks that work as poisons. Any way that can just be fluffed as normal pison I don't have to pay for? They don't have any fancy effects, just the usual ability damage or Blindness and such.

And Maneuvers:

-Dizzying Venom Prana (2 Wis damage and Stagger opponent with next attack, Fort negates)

-Curving Ray Shot (negate Cover bonus to AC on a single shot)

---Might be better re-fluffed as an armor piercing round of some kind?

-Solar Sting (Fire a shot at a square, creates a 10x10 field of vicious caltrops)

---A sort of grenade?

-Steady Hand (Increase range increment for all attacks by 30 feet for 1 round).

-Horizon Wind Lancet (+1d6 damage to the next attack I make)

-Sting of the Rattler (Deal an additional 1d4 damage on the next attack, and the target takes 1d4 more damage next round)

All of the above are from either Solar Wind or Steel Serpent. I still have 1 more Maneuver to learn, but Broken Blade and Thrashing Dragon are useless to me, and Veiled Moon is banned.

May I make a request, for a Martial Tradition for the Drow military that grants the Black Seraph discipline? It fits thematically, a cruel fighting style (with a bit of barely-there Hell themed fluff in some cases) based around Intimidation and brutal attacks.

Or, feel free to say this is too complicated and I'll pick a new class. =)

Sounds like a shrapnel bomb to me, yeah.

Rynjin, I will be looking into the class a bit more. See if you can come up with a way to make the maneuvers and stances flavored to make more logic.

An example is to have a flesh-warped poison gland that grows on your arm, which secrets the needed poison and it needs time to recuperate the poison.

Drozak's stats are done. Working on background for him, but he is an escaped Duergar slave.

That works for me. I was thinking something along the lines of spider-like fangs that are too small to bite anything with, but can still squirt poison out. It takes a little bit of effort to squeeze more out to where it's easily accessible (as represented by the full round to regain Maneuvers).

So seeing as Orthos has stolen a march on the Drider Queen, I'm thinking of a sterile male Drider Symbiote Gunner/Dreadnaught.

I play way too many female characters after all...

Also:

Who have we got interested so far? Here is our list of players and current concepts - sorry if I'm getting your concept wrong...

Browman - Drozak, Male Drow Fighter/Ninja escaped Duergar slave

Orthos - Rioghan- Female Drider Queen/something (Hunter might be good for some flanking prowess...) (awesome avater Orthos!)

Rynjin - (Drow?) Reskinned PoW maneuver freak and crossbow sniper

Alistus - (Drow?) Druid/Monk or Spell-less Ranger (Skin Changer) feral natural attack mayhem

Oceanshieldwolf - Mowlgrym - Male Drider Symbiote-Gunner/Dreadnaught; sterile war-experiment and grim wiseacre

Viluki - Pharnox - Male Drow Alchemical bomber and crafter extraordinaire, full-time murder hobo pragmatist

Note only full time murder hobo against Derro, Duergar and Abominations. Once we reach the surface (if we do) and encounter new races Pharnox will be for the capture and interrogate (via alchemy) approach...

Oceanshieldwolf wrote:

I'm leaning heavily toward Warlord from Path of War, for getting the absolute most out of her minions.

My character will be a drow trainee, as he has spent his entire life in secret military training. Now all that is left is to decide whether to choose The Spell-less rainger, or the alchemist variations. I'm leaning towards the alchemist, just because it makes more sense in this setting.

Sounds good on the background Alistus.

@How do driders interact with the created Drow campaign background/racial traits seeing as the male drider has a stat modifier array - I was still wanting to take the Cadet Officer background...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Cool. Minion mayhem.

Also, I was referring to your Drider avatar, but I'm already a fan of the Android... ;)

Torn between crossbows and something like a Revolver. I'd need way more levels of Gunslinger to properly reload a pistol though.

It's actually a Winter Hag, surprisingly, but I thought it looked cool and was Drow-like enough to pass =) Have to admit I'm fond of the little bird-skull head ornament. Though I think the closest Rioghan would actually be able to have would be a lizard of some kind.

Heh, I hear you. I've used a Dragon for a Lizardman, and a Zombie for a female Githyanki. The lack of avatar images leads us to be very creative….

So I've almost settled on Master of Many Styles/Mutagenic Brute. Unfortunately it lacks a very important aspect, claws. I'd have to wait until level 4 or 6, but it might be okay.

You could have a Beastmorph Alchemist as your second class instead. Plenty of claws (and bite!) going on there.

Also, GM Wolf, did you ever make a decision about whether I could swap out Veiled Moon for Black Seraph with some sort of Drow Martial Tradition? My Stalker options are pretty limited (I'm supposed to have 5 Styles to choose from, but only 3 fit my fighting style, and Veiled Moon is banned, so that leaves me with 2. At certain levels I may not have enough Maneuvers to fill my ones known.).

If not, I may just drop the Stalker idea altogether. I've been itching to play one for a while, but it seems to be hard to cram into this campaign.

May swap to some sort of Boom Bringer, like that Gunslinger/Alchemist explosion based MCA/Something else.

Once I have party role pinned down I'll fix a personality.

Edit: Was browsing MCAs.

If Stalker doesn't pan out, can I play a Grammaton Gunman instead?

So when was the deadline again?

This is my in the works alias. I've been working on background and description info for the past few days but every time I try to add anything to my profile it bugs out or reloads. I'll get it done eventually.

Silver Crusade

Dotting, quick question what is the religious atmosphere in this campaign? I'm thinking Inquisitor/Ranger maybe an older drow who is charged by the church to hunt down and kill any abomination that sneaks past the Maw. If there's no church to speak of, it can be a personal philosophical belief. Alias to follow.

No gods and no magic; something in the Underworld that made them Drow also cut them off from all magic, both arcane and divine. Hence why Rynjin was having issues with trying to flavor the SU effects from Path of War as something clearly non-magical.

They don't even have a word in their language for religion.

The Drow and Driders get by on alchemy and technology.

Silver Crusade

Okay...nevermind then...new concept: Poisoner (Rogue)/Alchemist. Thinking poison-expert. Again, alias to follow.

Coolness, someone for Ríoghan to talk shop with =)

@Viluki/GM Wolf?

machinesmith/gunslinger here. assuming the machine smith class is allowed?

4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 2) = 12 11

Thinking a Barbarian/Martial artist.

4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 5) = 1614

Dang you guys got some really nice rolls, make mine look like scrap =P

Yeah mine too xP

Drider racial stats remain the same would you could still take background equipment from a campaign trait I would think...

Awaiting GM myself...

Silver Crusade

4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 4, 6) = 19 =>16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 3, 4) = 18 =>15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 1) = 13 =>12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 6) = 14 =>13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 2) = 20 =>18
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 5) = 11 Out
4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 3) = 14 =>12

Not bad...

Wealth: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 6) = 14 x 10 + 500 = 640 gp

I have an idea for his backstory, but I'm not sure how the legal system works.

The idea was that his father was a lower-class worker who stole a good bit of wealth from his boss over time. One day, a fellow worker found out about it, and was going to turn him in, so my character took the money and turned himself in instead. How would he be punished for such a crime?

Here's the meat and potatoes, I'll work on the peas and carrots (campaign-specifics i.e. campaign trait, special gear, and Drow race adjustments etc.) shortly.

~The Little King

Was there ever a yea or nay on the Grammaton Gunman? Seems like it'd be easier to fit into the campaign.

It's basically a Zen Archer with guns (the guns attack regular AC so it's not as busted as it sounds).

Sorry folks I have been out of it with lots of RL stuff going on, let alone working long hours and trying to get enough sleep. Also I have been having some troubles with my internet provider. I hope to be around more.

Now getting to business...

Viluki... your question was...?

@Lord Inventor Reldic Emerson, Machine smith will be allowable.

@Rynjin, go with Grammaton Gunman, unless Viluki says otherwise I think it would work nicely. Viluki please chime in on this one.

Viluki... what do you say?

The orginal date was the 15th but since I have been out... Let's get to work on these characters and see what develops by Friday the 21st. Hopefully we can get started on Saturday and through the weekend.

I would say you take the drider racial traits, you can take the drow campaign background/traits as background fluff, since you already have the racial traits. Unless Vilku says otherwise.

Forgot my question GM...

@Rynjin, Grammaton gunman is a go...

@The punishment for that would most likely be exile, if this was recent however your character might be given a "free pass" (e.g conscription).

@You can take any Drow background for a Drider and receive the gear package that comes with it, or have me come up with a unique Drider gear package.

Also take a gander at this GM, I think these are the type of guns we are looking for... http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2rp4v?Fantasy-Western-Recruitment Click on the Campaign Guide and read through it, tell us whether or not if those guns are approved.

Neato. I'll try to have a character and background up ASAP then.

Silver Crusade

Actually...this is proving a little outside of my skill level as far as character creation goes...I'm gonna bow out. Thanks for stretching my limits!
