Dane, realizing that if it has already been checked and that a "Dale" doesn't exist, then it's only a matter of time before things break down. Dane strokes his chin thoughtfully. "Really? Huh, that's odd." Dane stands up in as non-threatening a way as he can, pushing himself slowly off the bar with his hands, speaking as he gets up. "Well it sounds like you've got a lot of questions, lets say we sit down at one of these tables and hash things out? 'd Be rude to keep you all standing!" Dane half turns towards the back of the tavern, then twirls, drawing his weapon. Taking a step towards Eddarly, Dane swipes at his with the blade, hoping to take the man's head clean off before he has a chance to even draw his blade.

As Dane draws blood, the disguise of "Dale" melts away. The squat, stocky soldier replaced by Dane's towering presence. "I am Dane Grahn of the Ireans!" Hoping to give his comrades an alibi, Dane looks towards Anton, and carefully words another half-truth. "Your friend 'Dale' is no longer with us I'm afraid, Anton, 'my old friend!'" Dane exudes as much menace as he can and laughs derisively. In the hopes that his allies will take the hint and not move to help him, keeping their facade of loyal Talireans.

Edit Edit: And because I forgot to post this too, here's the breakdown of my actions. Sorry, am posting from my work.

Surprise Round: Stand up, draw weapon.
Round 1: Attack, dispel disguise.

Edit edit edit: Bah, guess this situation has me scattered. If lowering the disguise and acting as though I am separate from the party requires any rolls, here's one.

Bluff: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Screams break out from the inn as Dane cleaves Captain Eddarly's head from his shoulders with a single swing of his weapon. Blood is everywhere.

Father Donnigan can only scream. "Noooooo!!" at the horrific sight.
The soldiers turn white for a split second before roaring in rage.
"You'll die for this!!"
They draw weapons and hurl themselves at Dane.

Father Donnigan stands up and casts as spell at Dane, his eyes wide open with horror.

As a pre-fight starting position question, Dane would have likely tried to choose a point that would give him room between the other soldiers if possible, while obviously still closing enough to take his swing at Eddarly. So how many (if any) AoOs would Dane have gotten?

Will Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

I don't understand the question. Do you mean how many AoO would the soldiers have taken on Dane? If so, then none. Their weapons were not drawn. As for positioning, the guards were keeping pretty close to their officer.
Dane suddenly feels an attack on his mind. His limbs freeze, he can't move at all. He has been held.
Dane, as a full round action you can try to break the enchantment.

Sorry, I bungled my English there. Basically, I was asking how many the guards would have provoked from Dane, for moving through my threat range/drawing weapons in my threat range. I'm guessing I'd threaten a couple at least, three is the max I can do. Rolling three to represent any that he could have gotten.

Will Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Dane struggles against the spell as hard as he can, breaking its hold only seconds after its formation. "Funny thing about decapitations? Eddarly may still be alive right now, technically. With a cut that clean you can live for a few horrid moments." Dane sneers at the arrayed forces as he backs up a bit.

Edit: Oh, and just noticed one of the four guards rolled a 1. Which with my Living Steel buckler, his weapon needs to make a Fortitude save or gain the Broken condition.

Like Sion, I'd like to know how close the market is, or if we are totally out of the loop on the brawl right now.

Alas, the marketplace is a fair distance from the inn. If you were able to hear the fight, then so would half the town. I'm afraid Durova and Sion are out of this fight.
Natural 1 on attack rolls do not mean weapons have a chance of breaking in any (non-optional) rule I've ever read. The only exception to that is if their longswords had the 'fragile' quality. Which they don't.
Dane punches and smashes the soldier.

Note you cannot use two-weapon fighting in grapple since it takes advantage of an offhand attack. Only actions that can be performed with a single hand is possible. see HERE for a neat flowchart on grapple. In fairness, I'm assuming your first attack counts though.

The soldier grappling Dane cries out weakly for help from his companions. They both rush to his aid, one joining the grapple while the other attacking Dane with his longsword.
The soldier already in a grapple with Anton tries to assist his companion... Before falling unconscious.
Grapple assist: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Grapple to pin (+5 bonus included): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
The third soldier stabs at Dane with his longsword.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 But misses

Dane is now pinned. He is flat-footed, takes an additional -4 to his AC, and cannot attack. He CAN attempt to break out of the grapple or escape artist.

Anton falls back, showing the distraught Yalana out the back door.

Seeing Dane slaughter the Captain, take out a soldier, AND resist his magic, Father Donnigan makes for the door. Although unaware of Anton and Mordesel's involvement, he seems worried enough not to take the chance. (Double move, he's made it outside and out of sight)
"Call the guards! Murder in the inn! Call the guards!"
Already a crowd is forming outside.

Mordesel looks around and quickly changes his disguise as no one's looking. He climbs out from under the table and starts running toward where the priest left. A young man, lithe and in shape comes running out the door, attempting to catch up with the priest.

[Ooc]I'll use up to 3 ki points to increase my speed to 50 for 3 rounds, using double move to catch up. My calculations say I should catch up by then, if not before, but I know there may be extenuating circumstances.

Dane fights off the soldier, but the grapple continues. Seeing Dane too strong to overcome, the soldier gives up at flees from the warrior (Full withdraw). Without his weapon in hand, Dane cannot strike him down. The other soldier also flees. They both make it to the doors.
"We'll see your head on a pike yet, traitor!"

Mordesel makes it outside. Over a dozen commoners hang around outside the inn, shocked at the sound of violence from inside but too afraid to enter. More locals are staring from a distance. He looks around and sees the old priest running down the road.

You had to spend a few seconds looking around the priest. The crowd was distracting and you weren't sure which way he went. You've spotted him now of course, but he's 30ft away and fleeing. The two guards (1 of whom is unarmed) are 20ft behind you.

Anton breathes easier, once he and Yalana exit the building. "I... I can't believe it... I..." he shakes his head to clear it, still shell-shocked by the revelation. "I hope they capture him... Do you think we need to get help for the guards?" he asks. "Or should we stay out of it? The priest must be fetching others, thankfully." He looks back at the inn. "I don't think I want to wait around to find out. I'm not sure I can go back there after all that... Perhaps a walk through the market can calm my nerves. But first, let me walk you home, to make sure you are safe. I don't think I could bear the thought of anything happening to you."

Dane catches his breath for a moment as he gathers his weapons, and with a small smile, his manacles.

Not sure if anyone else has fled the building, given that the soldiers and the priest are the only ones mentioned. So what's bellow is partially assuming that most of the patrons are still here and cowering around the place. Also, there's been shouts to call the guards, while wandering around town, what would Dane know of the general response time to likely be?

Looking towards the bar, Dane shouts "BELLAM! Get me a horse saddled and ready or I'll spread eagle ya! Best lookin' one you got in there!" And by that, he means the old school, cut your ribcage open and pull out your organs type of "spread eagle."
Then turning towards the barmaid, Dane says in a quieter, but still entirely commanding voice. "You, come here."

Intimidate: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

Dane stands silently, awaiting her approach, then lifts one of the sets of manacles from the box, and latches them onto her wrists. "Now, go upstairs and get my pack. It's the dark brown one with the hammer sticking out the side. And get the bedding I got stuffed in my bag then bring it down." Dane spares a glance towards the door. "And don't think about trying to escape out the windows. The fall would probably break your little ankles, and once I catch you, I won't be gentle. Don't think you can get out some other way either, I know about them too." Giving her a light shove towards the stairs, Dane turns towards the bodies of the two soldiers and Eddarly. First, executing the one who had not actually had Dane's blade strike him, then looking for anything of value, or otherwise of note.

If Bellam or the barmaid aren't there anymore, Dane will just go up stairs himself, and get his things, the bedding, and run to get a horse, and ignore looting the bodies beyond the manacles.

One last question about the city baring on Dane's escape, is it a walled city at all? Or are the borders more defined by the lack of city at the edges? In other words, does Dane need to worry about getting locked into the city if he's not fast enough?

Yalana nods frightfully at Anton. They both escape via a back exit.

Patrons cower behind tables and chairs at the bloodshed. Bellam stands behind the bar, pointing a loaded heavy crossbow at Dane. He grits his teeth and hesitates for but a moment.
"Boy! Get a horse ready. The fastest one. MOVE!"
A lad rushes from behind the counter, headed for the stables.

Dane checks the equipment. Captain Eddarly has a nice looking chainshirt on, but there's not enough time to strip him. His sword looks good though (Masterwork longsword). He also has a small key and a pouch of gold. The two guards are equipped poorly. Nothing of value although you grab coin pouches. Total is 42 gold pieces. There are six sets of manacles to grab.

The barmaid grabs a set of keys and rushes upstairs, too afraid to refuse. Bellam maintains his aim but remains silent. Half a minute passes and the barmaid runs down. She puts the backpack on the table in front of Dane before fleeing to Bellam's side.
"You best get going. Captain Varning enjoys a good hunt."

You have no real idea how long response time is (it's not like there have been other major crimes here since you arrived to judge response time). Still, the City Watch office is not terribly far away. If they're fast, they could be here within a few minutes of alarm. Time is short.
No, its not a walled city. There's nothing stopping anyone from riding out. There are no real set boundaries to the town.

The giant of an Irean makes a show of not caring that Bellam's pointing a crossbow at him, as he casually loots the bodies. "That's more spirit than I thought to give you credit for Bellam, but that's happened enough times to me for it to not scare me like I think you're hoping. Hasn't proven as lethal as you might think." Dane takes the small key, Eddarly's sword, money, and manacles, looping the sword onto his belt, and emptying the key and coins into his coin purse.

Once the barmaid comes down with his pack, Dane smiles, though it's difficult to tell under his armor. Dane snatches the barmaid by the chain on the manacles, "My Dear, I said that I'd be gentle if you didn't run, not that you'd get to leave." Pulling on the chain, Dane catches the barmaid under one arm, Dane scoops the remaining manacles into his pack.

At Bellam's threat, Dane laughs. "Oh, I am a fan of a good hunt myself." Dragging the barmaid behind him, Dane exits the building. "Thanks for the free food Bellam, mighty kind that was to give this humble soldier of Talingarde!" And with all the sarcasm he can muster, Dane tosses out a "Praise Mitra!"

Once exited the building, Dane looks for "his" horse, and after getting himself and the barmaid pulled on top, flees towards the exit of the city.

Just as a note GM, Dane's taking the bedding in an effort to make himself difficult to impossible to detect by scent, as nothing else in the inn should have anything that's distinct as Dane's scent. Dane been in the tavern, but so have many other individuals, and while the bed he slept in is still there, he's far from the only one who's been in it, and probably hasn't slept in it long enough (or been that alive enough) to leave a scent enough that it pierces the sheets. Not to say that Dane has fully succeeded in this, but figured since the hunt will probably begin soon, that it bared mentioning.

Bellam cries out in anguish as Dane throws the barmaid onto the horse. He gives his new steed a kick and rides through the town. Several town guards spot him, several arrows are loosed but they are too slow and too far behind. Within a few minutes, Dane is a good distance out of Aldencross.

Mordesel waits a few minutes after everything has passed. He then, ensuring he is not being followed, changes back to his disguise as Mendar. He begins hobbling down the street telling everyone who will listen about murder in the inn and how, if this weren't so close to Balentyne, he'd be afraid to go back. If he finds his two remaining friends he makes sure to fill them in about "Dale's betrayal."

Mordesel soon meets up with Sion and Durova, both returning from their trip to the market. They quickly hear from bystanders that Dane had stolen a horse and ridden out of town.

EDIT: Anton is included in the above, assuming he returns shortly after escorting Yalana home.

"How did he get outed? What was he thinking? I hope he's alright," Durova mentioned to the others once they got to a quiet spot away from any others.

Unless Anton gets invited in to calm his nerves, lol. Not sure he'd want to go back to the inn quite yet (if that's where people are) as he's already 'shown' that he was shaken by the revelation and wouldn't want to be reminded of it quite so soon. He'd be in the market, likely continuing his gather info. Something that would fit with the recent occurrences (e.g. patrols, defenses, etc.)

Mordesel looks around, I don't know how they found out. I'm sure he was careless, he emphasizes the word looking at Durova, possibly he spoke where someone else could hear. Besides, you know how thieves and scoundrels get. They always slip up in the end. Don't forget he's not our friend Dale anymore. I hope they catch him and string him up. Fast.

Bluff to send secret message: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
Okay, it was successful. Trying to tell Durova and Sion to be even more careful with their words. We have no idea how he was caught, it could be he was overheard, we don't want to be either.

After a few hours, Mordesel slowly makes his way back to the inn. Once there, he peaks his head inside, looking around slowly. Once it appears that everything is alright, he makes his way inside. His leg drags and his staff clicks as he limps towards Bellam. I . . . I know we couldn't have known that he wasn't Dale, but, he pauses, looking down. Mordesel looks back up, but I feel some measure of responsibility for bringing him here. I think. . . . I think this makes us even. He pulls out a bag. The small bag looks familiar to Bellam. Inside is 45 gp. Now this ought to pay off our stay for some time. We'll work out the rest as we go? He raises his eyebrows in question to the innkeeper.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Bellam nods appreciatively. He accepts the gold and seems relatively molified.
"I don't blame you. We've all been duped. I hear there's a reward for his capture, dead or alive. But as for me, I'll pay 100 gold to anyone who brings back our barmaid, Mia, alive and well."

Meanwhile, Dane rides on, eventually reaching the shoreline where Grumblejack has made camp. The ogre pokes his head up, curious at the approaching noise.

As Grumblejack curiosity seems piqued, Dane calls out, "Oi! 'Jack! First prize of the assault! This one's mine!" Dane gestures to the girl, Mia. "But I'm bringing you a present too I'm fairly sure. Up for taking out some more of those Talirean soldiers?" Dane lowers himself off the horse, takes a glance around to make doubly sure that Grumblejack's present hasn't arrived early, and pulls off his helmet to smile at the ogre.

Also GM, about what time of day is it when Dane arrives?

"You just can't trust people these days..."

Privately he talks to Anton, "Can you forge a note from Dane to the Dwarf leader thanking him for his information about the keep? We could find the map under his bed as if he left it there. Perhaps this could get rid of the dwarves."

Anton looks at Sion for a moment before slowly nodding. "Yes... Indeed, yes. That may very well be a wonderful way to make lemon gin out of this lemon... Do we make it subtle? Such as a letter from 'Dale', thanking him about the information that he could bring back to his command. As if the letter would be from his alter ego, a seeming innocent thanks but proof that the dwarf has loose lips? Or something less so, a letter directly from Dane, as if the dwarf knew and was a traitor..." He pauses to consider things. "I am inclined to go with the former as the latter may be too... obvious. The former may raise suspicions of treason, but with enough investigation, and that damnable cleric, the truth would easily be discovered. The latter would merely be a show of incompetence which may be enough to have them ousted. Tell me, has Dale been seen chatting with the dwarves at all, particularly say, when their leader is drunk? There needs to be an element of plausibility."

"Perhaps. He was talking to them after that first time I lost the drinking game to Barnabus. Something implicating the Dwarves might be best. With no connections to lead back to us. At the least hopefully the dwarves dislike for all the holiness and having accusations leveled at them will cause them to storm off themselves. A letter from Dale will be enough. Even if they are not convicted, hopefully they will be fired and that's all we need." He hands Anton the map, "Do make a copy from our copy first. We still need a map either way."

"Dwarves don't deal well with insults to their honor. If they have to go through enough red tape, they might just become insulted at the whole thing and pack it in. Assuming they aren't fired, of course. Very clever. We need to continue to focus on ways to peel off layers of possible defense from the castle. If there are random hunting parties emerging, picking them off might be something to think of as well. Accidents happen, you know."

Anton nods. "Excellent plan. I'll get right on it."

Not sure how precise our copy of the previous map was, but if it was quite good, the version Anton will make that will be 'discovered' will be of lesser quality, akin to something that someone without forgery skills could create. Accurate but sloppy, yet clearly based off of the dwarves' map.

The letter can be found incomplete, as 'Dale' hadn't a chance to finish and deliver it before he was discovered (since he was waiting on those manacles...). Something about thanking him for loaning him his map and for the other (not specified here) information imparted about the keep.

The battle in the inn has, unsurprisingly, attracted a lot of attention. Less than a minute after Dane's daring escape, guards pour into the inn. Witnesses are gathered together to provide statements.

Unfortunately, the inn is locked up for now (pending an investigation). Even inn patrons are forbidden from entering until morning. (Patrons are directed to hostels in other parts of town).

Clever. Where will the 'evidence' be found?
It is currently almost dusk.

I'm assuming it's almost dusk after the evidence had been prepared (since the incident happened shortly after lunch). I think we were talking about the letter and map being found under his matress in the room. Preferably before the 'investigation' begins (or at least before they search it). So we may need someone to get in there to plant it.

Do we know of other inns/taverns?

I've got Invisibility memorized if a sneaky one wants me to cast it on them to get in and out quickly undetected.
