Ms. Pleiades |
Petros lobs a bomb into the alcove, hoping to catch whatever lies within in the blast.
Bomb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Petros has trouble aiming the bomb precisely given the crowd in front of him. The bomb still explodes within the alcove.
reflex save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
A horrid hissing screech erupts from the alcove, after which a thick billowing fog fills up the air. Shortly after the clitter-clatter of clawed limbs scaling the pit can be heard, but the creature remains elusive to the sense of sight.
It is now Kaley's turn.
Kaley Toller |
Kaley tilts her head to the side, listening closely to the clattering limbs in an attempt to trace the direction of their movement.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Eyes narrowing, she calls out into the darkness in what can only be described as a growl. "Show yourself."
Intimidate: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Move action to search for stimuli with a perception check, standard action to demoralize with intimidate.
Dorin Ironbars |
Dorin frowns, staring up in to the hole above them, as he begins to draw together a string of runes and beginning to infuse them in to the metal of his axe.
Dorin casts Sun Metal.
Ms. Pleiades |
Judging from what she hears, Kaley thinks the spider has clambered up onto the northern wall of the hallway.
As Dorin finishes casting his spell, Coglen braces himself for action...
It is now Coglen's turn.
Coglen |
Coglen goes into total defense.
Briar Thor |
"That's right Miss Kaley, you tell it!"
Briar then moves up behind Kaley and casts Guidance on her.
Ms. Pleiades |
Petros prepares to cast snowball should the creature approach.
With the chittering of legs, the spider climbs across the wall, past Coglen, and finding Petros right where he had thrown the bomb at it previously, rears to strike.
Petros attempts to cast defensively.
Concentration: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
His attempts fizzle, and the spider continues with its attack.
Spider attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
The spider seems slightly jittery, as it misses Petros just barely.
The spider is on the wall above Coglen, inside the mist, it has 20% concealment. Characters adjacent to Coglen will be able to make attacks against the spider. It is now Kaley's turn.
Kaley Toller |
Kaley swings her blade in an arc over her head, slashing at the spider as it scuttles into view along the wall.
Greadsord Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 88 missing on a 20 or less
Greatsword Damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (3, 4) + 13 = 20
Ms. Pleiades |
Kaley strikes true through the mist, slicing a sizeable gash in the spider's abdomen.
It is now Dorin's turn.
Dorin Ironbars |
I can't get in to close with the Spider it seems so...
Dorin readies an action to lash out at the spider, should it come in range.
I really wish there was a way to mark threads that you could never accidentally hide. I'll pay closer attention.
Ms. Pleiades |
Dorin braces himself for a moment to land an opportune blow...
It is now Coglen's turn.
Coglen |
Coglen attacks the spider if he can reach it, otherwise readies an attack.
atk: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Ms. Pleiades |
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 68
Coglen's blow lands on the spider, causing it to his in annoyance.
It is now Briar's turn.
Briar Thor |
Briar sounds off incantations before unleashing another glob of acid at the menacing creature.
Acid Splash, Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 13 Presuming I'm shooting into melee.
Acid Damage: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Miss Chance (High Good): 1d100 ⇒ 79
Ms. Pleiades |
The spider hisses once more as it is caked in a thin blot of acid from Briar.
With the spider distracted, Petros leaps away from the creature, and lobs a shaped bomb at it to ensure their allies are not struck.
Bomb: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 3 - 4 = 14
20% Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 17
The bomb flies into the mist, detonating inside the pit.
At this point, the spider shakes violently before disintegrating into a fine mist that begins floating away, past Dorin...
Dorin Prepared Action: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Dorin AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
While both strikes hit the cloud, it does not dissipate.
It is now Kaley's turn.
Kaley Toller |
Kaley steps up quickly in pursuit, slamming the flat of her blade into the mist.
Taking a 5-foot step and attacking for nonlethal damage.
Greatsword Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Nonlethal Damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (4, 6) + 13 = 23
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 55
Dorin Ironbars |
Dorin has sun metal on so both of those have an extra d4 of fire damage attached to them.
2d4 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
Spellcraft1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Does Sunmetal count for making my weapon bypass DR/Magic?
Ms. Pleiades |
With a mighty swing of her sword, Kaley broadsides the cloud of mist that the spider became, and it sinks to the ground. In a few minutes, the spider solidifies into its original form, albeit on its back and knocked unconscious.
Combat Over
Briar Thor |
Briar stares at the dead spider somewhat horrified.
"WHAT was that thing!? I've seen spiders before and they don't usually turn into misty things."
He then quickly moves to make sure Raddicus was alright.
Coglen |
"Yes, they seemed quite magical."
Ms. Pleiades |
Taking time to examine the spider, the party is able to recognize it as a moon spider, the same sort of creature they had found in another chamber, mutilated and several of its parts sewn similarly dismembered human corpses. Moon Spiders are unlike most giant spiders actually slightly smarter than dogs and possessed of the magical abilities this subject displayed.
Kaley Toller |
Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
"Oh, I remember these! Hold on a minute." Kaley pulls out her formula book and flips through it eagerly. "That's a moon spider - pretty clever, but not our problem anymore."
She turns to the open trapdoor in front of them. "I'm more curious about this trap, and what it's supposed to be protecting."
Dorin Ironbars |
Heal-1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Dorin buries his axe in the body of the Spider, making sure to snip that last little thread of life, before turning to appraise the trap with the Aasimar. "Aye, having a trap of a hole in the floor doesn't seem to make much sense unless it is guarding something. What do you be thinking lass? Try open it to look down in to it? Try seal it so we can walk over it?"
Which Knowledge would I need for the Spider? Trying to figure out if it has Poison that I could milk from the corpse. Always a good idea to harvest what we can along the way.
Ms. Pleiades |
Which Knowledge would I need for the Spider? Trying to figure out if it has Poison that I could milk from the corpse. Always a good idea to harvest what we can along the way.
You guys already identified Moon Spiders earlier in the game. It does have poison, we'll go with either a Knowledge (Nature), Survival, or Craft (Alchemy) check to extract the poison.
Peering into the trap, one can see that it would dump any hapless victim into a ten-foot hole lined with spikes, from which a small alcove the spider would then attack from. No amount of searching turns up anything of note. It would appear the mystery of a dead-end was thought to be a sufficient lure by whoever designed and built this contraption.
Dorin Ironbars |
Survival-1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Dorin uncorks a couple of viles and crouches before the Spider, before beginning to harvest the venom.
Ms. Pleiades |
Three doses of Moon Spider Poison; Injury, Fort save DC 15, Frequency 1 round for 5 rounds, 1d3 STR damage, cure 1 save.
Coglen |
heal: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
"So, are we killing it afterwards?"
or could i make it a pet? haha
Dorin Ironbars |
I killed it already Cog, or that was my intention. I didn't roll the dice though so it is up to you.
Coglen |
I killed it already Cog, or that was my intention. I didn't roll the dice though so it is up to you.
ah, nevermind, i managed to miss that part. having it as a pet wouldn't have worked anyway, i doubt it wants to eat trail rations.
Kaley Toller |
Kaley sees Dorin raising his axe and starts to blurt out, "Wai-" But her interjection is cut off with a thud as the axe severs the spider's unconscious body in two. "...Never mind. It's just... they understand human speech, you know..." She trails off. They understand human speech and they build homes and they plan and they work together in teams and...
Her attention is reclaimed by Dorin's effort to extract venom from the spider's corpse. Her eyes light up, and she begins scanning the area for intact strands of spider silk, attempting to safely store any she finds in her pack for future use - potential use, at least.
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
When her task is complete, she kneels next to Dorin as he harvests the venom and mutters quietly, "I'm all for collecting useful alchemical ingredients, but please try not to use those for anything you'll regret, okay? I've seen what things like that can do to people, and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy."
Dorin Ironbars |
Dorin smiles sadly at Kaley and pats the woman on the shoulder. "Aye lass, they do all those things, but they also sadly eat the flesh of humanoids, like us. And I dinnae want to leave something like that alive on our back trail, while we are exploring a big dark deep dungeon. We could no have left it alive. And the Poison. nay I'll just use it if we get in to a bind. Tis always handy to have some poison around too. I might be able to brew up an antitoxin from it mayhap!"
Kaley Toller |
Kaley nods slowly, but still appears slightly disturbed. Nonetheless, she busies herself collecting silk from the spider's lair.
Ms. Pleiades |
With the spider and its abode picked clean of usable materials, Petros leans against a wall, studying a book for a few moments before looking up to the others, then between the two apparent exits, one to the south, and one to the east.
"So, which route shall we continue along then?" he asked.
Kaley Toller |
"I'm with you and Briar. If a skeletal hand is pointing somewhere, we might want to start heading in the other direction."
Kaley moves to the southern door. If the others assent, she opens it.
Coglen |
"Yes, I can't imagine anyone in their right mind would follow such a thing in so hostile a place."
Briar Thor |
Briar nods his head quickly in agreement.
Dorin Ironbars |
"Though we are looking fer the undead and it is a skeleton hand so it may be the way ta go... Right?"
Coglen |
"we can always try that one later."
Ms. Pleiades |
Opening the southern door, the group finds that the walls and ceiling of the chamber are hidden behind a thick grey-white forest of spider webs that block all vision beyond ten feet. Webs stretch everywhere, creating a maze of vertical sheets. Grey, furry dust clings to the white strands. The desiccated and shrivelled remains of a long-dead man hangs spread-eagle across one such layer. Rusty swords, daggers and axes dangle from other strands amidst collections of bones.
Kaley Toller |
"Petros? Now might be a good time for one of those bombs."
Ms. Pleiades |
Petros reaches around his belt, plucking out one of his vials and twirling it in his fingers for a few moments. "Second-last one in the batch," he commented before looking to Kaley. "Alright, stand back. All the cobwebs could cause a premature detonation."
When Kaley backs away, Petros pulls his arm back and lobs the bomb into the room, trying to get it past the first few layers of webbing.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Petros successfully plants the bomb to burn as much webbing around the entrance to the room as possible. A few moments later, the webbing supporting the body, bones and several defunct weapons give way as they burn, although some webs remain.
With a resolute nod, Petros grimaces. "Well, that gives us maneuvering room if something is in there, and I'd rather save my last bomb for something a little more substantial than cobwebs."
Coglen |
"Anyone have flint and steel? Torches?"
Kaley Toller |
"Let's try the direct approach."
After scanning the newly visible room for threats, Kaley crosses to the opposite door and attempts to cut through the webbing in front of it with her sword.
Greatsword Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Greatsword Damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (1, 4) + 13 = 18
Ms. Pleiades |
Kaley is able to slice through several more bunches of webbing.
Kaley, please give me a perception check.
Dorin Ironbars |
Dorin sighs and runs a hand through his beard before gripping his axe rightly and moving in after the Paladin. "I will nay let ya get et alone lass!"
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Perception if needed.
Kaley Toller |
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Ms. Pleiades |
As Kaley begins slicing through the remaining webs, she and Dorin notice movement nearby...
Initiative Kaley: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Initiative Petros: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Initiative Dorin: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1
Initiative Coglen: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Initiative Briar: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
Initiative Spider: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Initiative Skeleton: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
It is currently a surprise round with Kaley, Dorin, the Spider, and the Skeleton acting. The skeleton is prone on the ground.
In another moment, a shot of webbing comes from the room towards Dorin...
Web attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Dorin is plastered with the sticky strands, entangling him!
The skeleton lying on the floor then claws at him...
claw: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Thankfully, the claw scrapes uselessly against Coglen's armor.
It is now Kaley's turn in the surprise round. You have a move or a standard action.
Kaley Toller |
Even as the spider launches its web through the air, Kaley's feet are already moving, lunging toward it and swinging her blade in a low arc.
Charging at the spider as a standard action, and making an Acrobatics check to avoid provoking an attack of opportunity from the skeleton.
Acrobatics: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (18) - 3 = 15
Greatsword Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
Greatsword Damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (3, 5) + 13 = 21
