Always. Be. Pushing.

In the weeks since the overcharged portal to the elemental plane of water was disabled, the waters threatening the village of Mudwater have receeded to thier previous levels, removing the threat of flooding for the time being.

The threat presented by the strange fungal cretures that rose from the aquifer beneath the mountain tarn has not abated, however, and the townsfolk live in constant fear of the beasts.

The Mudwater Fen, once a known and trusted place, has become a battleground between the loyal frogfolk of The White Willow Mound and the foul abominations that have risen from the flooded caverns beneath the bog.

At night, strange calls rise in the night, drawing closer and closer to the small town.

The gurgle of the swamp waters is auduble beneath the woven reed mats that cover the wooden slats of the floor of Hettwoman Tandina Shirls's home as you enter. Glass globes of busily fluttering fireflies light the cabin's interior, revealing the elderly Hettwoman on her wicker throne at the far end of the room.

The warden Oleanne stood to her right, a streak of grey marking her fall of long blond hair. The silver wolf's head affixed to her grey cloak gleamed in the firefly glow.

The grizzled tracker known as 'Slick' stands to her left, a floppy brimmed hat shadowing his coarse features.

A tattered blanket covers most of the left wall, marked with a rough map of the swamp and best guesses as to the enemies locations and activities.

Tandina smiled. Her voice was thin, almost a whisper, "Thank you for coming, my friends. I hope you are settling in. I know Mudwater isn't the kind of place you are used to, but, to us, it's home".

The elderly woman waved a liver-spotted hand at the blanket map.

"Oleanne has brought word from the deep swamp. The Greengullet tribe of frogfolk have pushed into the region formerly ruled by the Bloodtooth. They had been held in check but your decimation of thier enemies has provided them with an opportunity too large for their chief to ignore. A mound of their own. Perhaps they could be dissuaded in some way?"

The Hettwoman let the question hang for a moment.

"To other matters. Mr. Frenell...sorry, 'Slick', has reported that the trap lines have all been cut and the traps corroded in a way that is impossible to rationally explain. A symbol was cut into the trees nearby, one we know to belong to the Cult of the King in Yellow. Denied that meat, and with our foraging limited with the Red Walkers abroad....simply put, we're running out of food. Similar marks were found by tunnels uncovered on the lakeshore by the waters lowering. The two could be related somehow. I....we...need your services once more. What say you?"

Brand looked around trying to ignore the tightness in his chest.

I really don't like this place

Brand stared hard at the old women. Shes so old, will i ever get that old?

Well we cant have frog-folk trying to take over now can we.

He scratched at his head, looking at the group around him, ladies, giant crows. He really did want to shout out yes.
but he knew his place.

I think we should

Always. Be. Pushing.

Hettwoman Shirl rested her gaze on Brand for a long moment.

"There are many tribes of frogfolk, young Master Orson. Just as I see assembled before me more than one race of hero. While it is true that the Bloodtooth and Greengullet boggards have been among our most fervent opponents, so too have the frogfolk of the White Willow proven to be the staunchest allies to our cause."

The elderly woman smiled at him. "Do not paint them all with the same brush."

He averted his eyes, face burning hot.

Sorry i didn't mean it like that. I get carried away is all.

Always. Be. Pushing.

Hettwoman Shirl smiled wider at that. "I raised seven children within these walls, Master Orson. I am well acquainted with the impulsive natures of the young. Nothing you either say or do will surprise me nor is it within your power to offend me. There is no need to apologize."

"Youth and brashness are easily forgotten," said the strange eyed monk rising to his feet from his cross-legged position on the floor, "By erring, we learn. Ignorance is the root of wisdom, and I'm sure these people can accept a misspoken word or two, after all, we are here to lend what aid we can.

"I would most like to find a way to help in any way that I can," Maitreya continued, his words now directed more to the Hettwoman Shiri than the youth. "Are there tribes of the frog folk still allied with Midwater holding these 'Greengullets' at bay? Or do they represent an unchecked threat against the village?

"If unchecked we must brace them with all haste, if they are held at bay, perhaps this threat to the provisions of your people would be more dire?

Edit: All this was being written as Luke was posting his response. . . c'mob dude, respondeding in minutes won't give us a chance to role-play! lol

Always. Be. Pushing.

The warden rested her hand on the Hettwoman's shoulder, "Let me answer that if I may?" Oleanne said.

At the Hettwoman's nod, she continued. "We have several scouts keeping watch on the movements of the enemy as we speak. At last word they report that, for now, the Greengullet boggards seem content in consolidating their hold on the former mud mound of the Bloodtooth tribe. With it secure, their forces will cut our area of control in the swamp nearly in half and divide us from the lands of the White Willow. Without our frogfolk allies, our ability to anticipate and outmaneuver our enemies in the swamp is drastically reduced and we become a defensive force."

"Even the strongest stone will eventually be worn to sand by wind and wave. Defense will not win us this war. And that's where you come in. The chief of the Greengullet tribe hasn't, as yet, commited more than an expeditary force to the mound. If we can strike hard enough and fast enough, we can hit them at their weakest."

"In my mind, the Greengullet are the more pressing of the two."

The swamp tracker named 'Slick' grunted. We gots' supplies fer two....maybe tree weeks if'n we stretch 'em. Get it done by then or we'll 'ave empty bellies all round. An' den da real cryin' begins."

"I believe that we must focus on the more immediate and prominent threat first" spoke the pale lady. Her back stiff she floated inches above any chair, as if borne aloft on an invisible throne.

"Your people will starve without food, and the sabotage of your traps and theses markings may indeed be related. Or perhaps not. In either case, we should consider your survival our paramount concern. We know you will starve. We do not know if these boggarts will attack."

The lack of emotion displayed during the Lady's speech as she spoke of the death of the residents of Mudwater sent chills down the spines of those gathered there.

While your supplies hold, it seems best that we seek out this more physical threat.

Mastery turned to look at the floating lady and bowed his head slightly, If they feel their supplies will last some weeks that should allow us time to see to this threat they are so concerned about.

Always. Be. Pushing.

The warden shook her head in agreement with the monk. "You have weeks of food. You said so yourself. That mud mound could be.....no, will be a fortress in weeks. We should hit it now, while we still can!"

'Slick' crossed his arms across his chest and leaned against the back wall of the cabin. "That's how you see it," he growled. He glanced at Oleanne from under the rim of his hat. "Opinions vary."

Hettwoman Shirl silenced them both with a look. "You two are not here to squabble. I raised seven children. I've heard my share. Both missions are very important, this is plainly apparent. Which is the more important.....well, who could say other than the gods above? I beleive opinions vary is the operating phrase here. What matters is simply this.....which mission are you going to undertake?"

" I believe this to be a matter of simple mathematics. It will take time for us to reach this mound, and then time again to destroy these sentient creatures. More time to return, and then by the time we get here you have starved or turned to cannibalism"

The looks on faces of those gathered caused Amelia to pause for a moment

"I apologize. That is a joke a Goblin friend of mine once told"

Pausing again for a moment, as if remembering she continued

"Now, if we deal with these markings and lack of food, we will be here to defend you should these creatures attack, and then we do not have the false timeline of your imminent starvation forcing us to rush into a land war"

Half-Dryad Monk 9 | 75/75 Hp | AC 26 (30 AOO), T 23, F 20 | Saves F+9, R+13, W+10 Ini-+10 percp-+13

Thoughts swirled in his mind. What's a goblin?

Why not send a small team to hinder the creation of this mound?

His arms crossed behind his head as he leaned back.

or at least watch them and get advanced warning if they were to attack.

Brand looked back to the old lady. Do you have anyone who is able to watch undetected?

Always. Be. Pushing.

Hettwoman Shirl looked to the warden, "Oleanne is in charge of our defense."

The warden walked over to the blanket-map on the wall and tapped splotch of ochre with her knuckle.

"The White Willow frogfolk already have eyes on the mud mound, as I've said, and they will send word if the Greengullet move in our direction. We have a system in place and it's worked so far. We have to put our faith in our allies. After all, their future depends on us as much as our futures depend on them."

Female Human Air Wizard 9 | 65/65 hp | AC 17, T13, F14 | Saves F+7, R+8, W+8 I +7 Per +9 11 temp hp

"Ah, so you do have an early warning system. Excellent. That allows us to pursue the matter of the markings and foodstuffs without the issues of sneak attacks"

Amelia awaited the denial of her argument.

Why do they always argue? she thought to herself

Always. Be. Pushing.

The warden shook her head. "I don't know if you can say that...Amelia, is it? She tapped the map again. "Once your past.....here, you'll be on your own as far as picket protection. I admit I know little about this Man in Gold or whatever, but assume the worst and you'll come out ahead."

THe warden took a breath and sighed."If you feel the need to follow 'Slick's' course of action, then I wish you all the best. Now, if you will all excuse me, I have to double check the village defenses."

The door clicked shut behind her.

The Cult of the King in Yellow Evelyn knows that the Cult of the King in Yellow arose in the Sword Baronies following the fall of Empyria and that it only gained popularity recently under the leadership of a man named The Voice of Gold. Those who have aligned themselves with the cult have prospered improbably, often under circumstances that fool no one but for whome blame has been impossible to determine.

Mudwater Mudwater is home to roughly 450 people, surviving through a combination of foraging, small plot agriculture, wild trap lines, and fishing the brown nose "mudwater" eel.

'Slick' nodded and pushed himself off the back wall. "Well, now wut thaz all settled. Grab yer kit an' foller me."

The trackers boots thumped over the planks laid over the stretches of open water between the stilt islands that made up the village as he led you to the large bulding on a stilt island all its own on the edge of the settlement.

A large wooden sign on its slanted rooftop still bore the words FRENELL'S EELWORKS

Someone had scrawled WHERE BEING A BROWN NOSER IS A COMPLIMENT! beneath the painted letters.

"Tis 'ere eelworks bin in my famly goin' on six generations now. Y'all need a skiff if'n yer ta cross deepwater and we got plenny jus' gathering moss since ain't no one going out no more cuz'a wuts goin' on."

'Slick' pointed to a row of low hulled, flat-bottomed craft bobbing beside the dockside. "Take yer pick and get yer gear aboard. Y'all know yer way 'round an eelin' boat?"

Each craft is roughly ten by fifteen and boasts both oar docks and a long pole for propulsion. A pair of planks serve as benches at the front and back of ech boat.

"A moment first, I think. One last tasking before leaving Mudwater."

Evelyn stepped out a bit further into the muck.
She held her hand out over the mud and fetid swamp grasses... and concentrated.
Her hand shook visibly. And then, something started to happen in the mud beneath it. Worms, grubs, and insects of all stripes started to crawl in and out of the mud, like fish jumping in water, turning it into a roiling mass of black earth.
And then, one after the other, large mushrooms began to erupt from it. In a few moments, a great many juicy-looking truffles stood on the edge of the marsh, stretching out over the area.

"Mister Slick. I believe you will find these mushrooms quite nourishing, for you, your family and friends. Take what you wish as a reward for your assistance, but know they will spoil by this time tomorrow. The rest of you likewise, if you have not provisioned for our little journey."

After picking up a couple of the mushrooms, the blind woman accepted Maitreya's hand and stepped into the boat, where she attempted to seat herself as comfortably as an eel boat allowed.

Nyx has cast Create Food and Water, having created enough food to feed 27 people for a single day.

No thanks,

He holds his hand up and points to a glistening green gold ring.

He hopped onto the boat and walked to the front bench, peering intently out over the swamp.

Maitreya bowed respectfully at the blind woman's generous act, and helped her aboard the small craft. He watched the young man refuse the mushrooms, and watched the other woman float to her seat.

He turned to Slick, It seems that there is even more for your people. We have no need of it. Take care. Maitreya bowed to the eel wrangler and made ready to push the craft into the water.... waiting only long enou for the man-crow to step aboard.

The tracker tipped the brim of his hat to the oracle. "That were sumthin' else ta see. Don't rightly know what ta say 'bout it other'n thanks."

"Bes' o'luck ta ya and gods bless."

The next few hours fall into a familiar rhythm. As Maitreya plunges the pole into the swamp's muck, his arms, back and shoulders drive downwards, rocking the eel boat, sometimes alarmingly. Then his body reverses, pulling the pole from the clinging mud. Over and over again.

Swamp water flows by inches from the boats rim, thick with a layer of algae that paints an emerald line down each side of the boats hull. The shallow angle of the bow carries the boat up and over the reeds and swamp grass that jutt from the shallower patches of water rather than a pointed prow which would collect the vegetation and become fouled.

As time goes on, the cycle of push, rock, recover becomes almost second nature.

The swamp itself has a beauty all its own, shadowed hulks of ancient trees festooned with beards of verdant moss stand atop hillocks barely above the water line. Pale shelf fungus decorates the trunks of fallen logs, and the delicate white and pink petals of lady slippers dot the gloomy patches like stars in the night sky. Insects sing and buzz. Dragonflies dart like living arrows from bullrush to bullrush. Frogs croak in choruses of rumbles, grunts, and trills.

Evelyn Nyx slowly pulled down her plain ceramic mask. The colours nearby started to fade, seeming almost bleached, and shadows slowly started to extend and deepen just in the boat. For a brief moment, everybody present saw the world through the same black and white starkness she did. And then... everything was just back to normal.

does the fact that it is Scarlet make it evil? I cannot detect evil, but I have holy fists, and do a lot more damage to anything evil.

Oh Snap! Surprise Round Update

Brand crouched and sprung, sailing through the air towards the monstrous turtle. The eel boat leaned and lurched, green water spilling into the crafts bottom.

Your Acrobatics check was not high enough to avoid an AoO

You won't know until you attack. Better give me the damage both ways. Good thing you didn't try to jump after all, eh?
