Wilaml Fmelvam |
Wil spends his first couple of nights settling into his sea legs, of which he has none, spending more time hanging on the railing and regretting everything he had ate at the feast the night before. Especially the wine that had left him just hungover enough to regret the moment the ship set sail.
Perception Take twenty 20+2 = 22
However he did hisbest to keep watch and avoid lurching on anyone passing by, merely feeding the fishes what had been, at one point, a decent meal.
Wil is generally keeping an eye out depending on what shift he's given and helps around the Sprite wherever he's needed. Most likely taking care of simple injuries and the like.
Seltyn Sevenleaf |
Seltyn suggests that our spellcasters should rest during the day, and be ready with spells and perception checks at night. Our warriors should be ready to fight if they're summoned.
He'll stand behind the ballista, dancing lights cast dead ahead, ready to help load it. Our bards can use the same spell to scan the waters on all sides within spell range. The sooner we spot danger, the better our chances.
Windfavor |
The days go by as the elven crew refuses to relax their vigilance. On day six of the journey Windfavor explains that you are probably two days from your destination. The winds have been favorable and in midafternoon the winds slow down a bit.
"I spot a glint of light 30 degrees to starboard"
Wilaml Fmelvam |
perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Wil continues going about his duties, blissfully unaware of any goings on until Windfavor speaks up and he turns to follow the aged sea-elfs stare.
Wilaml Fmelvam |
Wil, ever being cautious after the Queens warning, grunts as he loads the Ballista and waves to Azlain. "Lets get this ready just in case." He shouts up to Talon while he loads the Ballista. "What do you see Brother Talon?"e
Chainmail |
As the boat adjusts coarse towards sea (away from coast), a piece of driftwood with two emaciated humans is drifting with the slight current. One is using a large belt buckle as an improvised mirror.
The humans are sunburnt and mostly still. As you approach one of them is barely able to move the mirror while the other appears unconscious.
Wilaml Fmelvam |
Wil, upon seeing the poor emaciated drifters stops his work on the ballista and gathers some waterskins instead as the boat makes its way towards the humans. He helps the others get the awake man on board while tying a rope around the other one and lifting them aboard by hand.
He uses his healing ability to remove the fatigue from the awake man before working on reviving his fellow. He doesn't say a word as he focuses on keeping the second man alive...
heal 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
He uses his ability again once the man proves stable and removes the overwhelming fatigue to allow the man to recover more easily.
two uses of LoH 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5
Elorin Silentall |
Elorin upon hearing the ruckus moves to the side of the ship where the men are brought aboard.
Seeing Wil work on the more injured of the two she sits next to the awake one with a waterskin to offer him. "Rest now you are amongst friends. My name is Elorin, what is yours?"
After the man has answered and drank she will ask. "What happend?"
Will also heal if it is needed. CLW: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 The most injured after Wil has worked his good magic.
Talon Moonwalker |
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Talon spots more or less the same that Windfavour does, and when Will shouts up to him, he calls back.
Its bad news for them to be abandoned like this. The whole staying with the ship till it sinks underneath you. Could well be that monster that we were told about. I will keep a lookout.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Suny |
Perception:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Helping the fellows on board Suny asks,
"How safe d'ye thin t'is in'a water? I could go fer a look?"
And the way the dice roller hasn't given me anything over about 5 five days, I don't thin that'd be a good idea. :P
Chainmail |
Upon further inspection, it appears the two humans have been adrift for quite a while. The unconscious figure stirs slightly as Wil's healing quickly infuses his body. The figure holding onto consciousness is revealed to be a woman when she is pulled on board. She manages to get the words, 'water' through dry throat and lips.
After being given water the human woman speaks, "Turn around, turn around, you want the sun on the right side." A look of fear is in her eyes.
Her male companion can keep down water if it is trickled slowly into his mouth.
Azlain |
I posted on Saturday but it looks like the boards ate it. This is a repost.
Azlain had been particularly quiet before the ship had cast off. During the discussion of the ships defenses he had only nodded to Wil and familiarized himself with the mechanisms of the ballista. He'd obviously operated them before.
Once the ship was out on the open water the masked elf found himself nearly useless. The jargon and the operations of the ship were entirely alien to him, so he just did his best to stay out of the way. The aft deck seemed to be his favorite place.
After a few hours on the rolling vessel the stoic and quiet elf suddenly leapt up from where he's been sitting, yanked his mask away and vomited over the rail.
After a minute or so of ragged breathing and shaking he seemed to get his nausea under control. He took quite a while cleaning his face with a piece of a bandage and shook his head in frustration.
As he replaced his mask the ship hit a small swell and forced him to adjust his footing to keep his balance, turning toward those nearby. For the first time since he had joined them, his face was revealed.
What was left of it at any rate.
His nose, lips and cheeks were missing. The exposed muscles of his face were leathery and dry looking but slick with saliva and mucus from perpetually exposed glands. The torn flesh rose higher on the right side of his face, ripped clear up to his damaged right eye where the missing lower lid left it exposed and red.
Azlain simply sighed, ignored the stares, and righted his mask.
Windfavor |
Windfavor calmly nods at Suny. "It is not yet evening, but we can't be sure."
Looking at Seltyn and Talon. "The ballista will do little good running away." Windfavor calmly gets a longbow and quiver out of the ship's stores. He fires a shot at the piece of driftwood the humans were on about 300 feet away.
1d20 ⇒ 3
"My aim is not what it once was. Do I put you ashore, or you staying on the ship?"
Wilaml Fmelvam |
Se that the pair were taken care of for now Wil rose to his feet and readied himself for what was to come. "Lets finish this before we put to shore, i'd rather see the Sprite in one piece when we return to the kingdom." Wil nods to Suny as well as he readies his longbow and finishes loading the Ballista. "Never know if we may need it in the end."
Elorin Silentall |
"Seems we need the sun on our right side" She shouts to those who didn't hear the woman. "Why is that hun? drunk as much as you need but do it slowly."
Talon Moonwalker |
The sooner that the ballista is ready the better, and the sooner we are at harbour the better. How those are accomplished I don't mind. That the creature is so close concerns me, but there is little to be done now.
Talon will prepare his bow and the arrows that he has ahead of the battle, checking fletchings and the shafts before helping load and ready the other weapons. If there is still time, then he will spend it praying to Gozreh for a safe journey, and that she might guide them safely to land.
Chainmail |
The woman speaks, "I am Gretchen. A large sea creature broke up our ship by ramming us head on. It used its huge tentacles to rip what remained of our ship to pieces." It seems prudent to have the human refugees rest in the shade of the sail along the deck as the ship continues toward the harbor.
As evening approaches, the elven watch is ever vigilant. Looking for disturbances of sight and sound, nothing disturbs the night.
Wil continues to supervise the recovery of the patients, the male patient seems to doze fitfully while the female patient nibbles on dried crackers provided from the ship's stores. She seems somewhat apprehensive as the ship continues on its northwardly course towards the harbor. A week broth is produced for Azlain and the two patients which is primarily designed for those with weak stomachs and symptoms of seasickness.
Suny easily moves up an down the little rigging the single-master has as the ship moves on. There is no crows nest. The ship is too small to risk significant mass high up on the sail.
As evening approaches, the elven watch is ever vigilant. Looking for disturbances of sight and sound.
Let me know the watch schedule, position characters on the deck, and let me know what sources of light you will use. Windfavor produces an everburning torch in an enclosed storm lantern that can be hung from the railing or the bow.
Two obvious strategies, dark and quiet (silent running), or light up as much as possible. Let me know.
Windfavor lets you know that it is good tactics to have at least one person responsible for the four quarters-bow, starboard, stern, and port. While sailing, he cannot adequately look in a single direction, as he needs look all around to keep the ship on course. He plans to be spelled by Suny during the middle three hour period for a quick rest.
This is the stage setting post before rushing into action. I am taking feedback from the wagon ambush :-) We will consider there to be three three-hour watches through the night. If you are awake during these periods, I need to know where you are looking and a perception roll. I made reference to combat operations before--Windfavor informs you of standard operational vehicle tactics.
Talon or Seltyn needs to get the final schedule/positions/watch schedule set. Windfavor trusts them to delegate and determine if they are running silent and dark or fully lit.
Elorin Silentall |
After relaying to everyone what the Gretchen said and helping where she can she gets on with duties. Elorin will rest up before night fall.
please put me in what ever watch is best however if i had preference I would say 2nd watch, I have low light vision so not much light is needed for me.
I will be looking out of the front of the ship or as close to it as I can get.
Perception roll for my watch: perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 I can cast light if it is needed for anyone else. But if we are going for silent running I wont cast it.
Talon Moonwalker |
First or last watch might be better for you, simply looking at how you need rest to prepare spells. As do Seltyn and Suny. Lets face it, we all have LLV I think.
With no spells to watch out for myself, I am going to suggest that Seltyn and Suny take last watch, Azlain and Talon take middle watch, and Elorin, Thalas and Wil take last watch? Think that covers everyone?
Talon's Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
Wilaml Fmelvam |
Wil will take last watch then :)
Wil during his watch, kept an eye on the injured survivors and sighed in relief as the one man was recovering nicely. He closed his journal and slid it back into his pack, no entry to make this time thankfully the man pulled back from the brink in time.
Perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Azlain |
Azlain seems particularly susceptible to seasickness. It mellows but never quite seems to vanish. It is clear that the stoic warrior is fairly miserable onboard the ship, but he keeps his mouth shut and stays at the back near the ballista.
Thalas Lebarath |
Thalas volunteers to take the four-quarters-bow watch position of the third/"dawn" watch-shift. He will use Detect Magic to also help determine if anything will be nearby.
If we "run silent", we can sort of see by moon and starlight but the enemy will have concealment (20% miss chance) and be able to Stealth. Detect Magic has a sensory range of 60'.
Chainmail |
Okay, there are 12 watches. 4 positions times 3 shifts. First/bow - First/starboard........third/port - third/stern. The moon will be waning, so consider it almost total darkness if you go dark. If everyone takes two, you should be covered. Windfavor did have Suny down for second/steering ship. If you like, I will just assign them randomly. The new bannermaiden volunteers for second/port and third/port.
Wilaml Fmelvam |
I will go with whatever Talon/Seltyn decide for the silent or full lit portion. Wil will use his detect evil sparingly throughout his watch to try and detect anything evil within 60ft of the areas he is watching. Second Stern and Third port. Sorry for completely missing that Chainmail... =/. He will perform his watches fully armed and ready for combat. He won't have his weapons drawn and depending on if we are fully lit or not will be carrying a torch or simply walking around slowly with his hands free. Last thing he wants is to go over board and not grab onto some railing as he goes...

HAHA!!! you have no chance of that happening! Ill jump over board into the waiting jaws of the sea creature, before I ever mimic that horrific excuse for a film scene lol.
Seltyn Sevenleaf |
With no spells to watch out for myself, I am going to suggest that Seltyn and Suny take last watch, Azlain and Talon take middle watch, and Elorin, Thalas and Wil take last watch? Think that covers everyone?
That's good, but I'd like a spellcaster with dancing lights on each shift, so let's put Seltyn, Suny and Elorin on one shift each. The girls have good perception, but Seltyn doesn't, so let's try:
Seltyn/Talon Elorin/Azlain Suny/Thalas/Wil That way, we've got mobile light and a decent chance of spotting the monster before it eats us. Assuming, of course, we spot it from far enough away. The spell works fine underwater, too, so let's assume the caster is moving it all around constantly, above and below the surface. I realize this could attract the monster, but the queen said it would show up, so Seltyn's assuming it will. Have one person at the ballista, and everyone doing perception checks. For our shift, Seltyn will man the ballista, since Talon's a great shot with multiple arrows. The ballista takes a round to reload, so he'd shoot it once, then resort to magic. Talon can pepper the thing in the time it would take to reload it. We're not likely to get more than a round or two, anyway. There's no guarantee we won't get surprised, but we can reduce the odds. Low-light vision and a good "flashlight" means we can spot a lot of things at a good distance, with a little luck. We've got to hurt it before it closes, if we can. Everybody on board with that?
perception:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Seltyn mans the ballista, tosses out the light going in circles around the boat, and holds a scroll in one hand.
Flambeaux - Elvish Bannerman |
The new bannermaiden adds herself to watch 1 to make it even. If she can stay up, she will span watch 2 too.
From the journals of the new bannermaiden....
We had scarcely picked up a few refugees from the depredations of some sea monster when the dark night came. To help Windfavor put out his lantern by the ballista in the bow, and Seltyn went on watch forward. I was scanning the starboard and part of the stern while Talon took the other side of the boat and stern.
The human female checked her unconscious male companion and wandered a little aimlessly around the deck after resting for the latter part of the day.
Talon, with the best eyes of the bunch, scanned the seas for any disturbance.Talon need a perception -- I am avoiding rolling for the group again after the wagon incident.
Suny, Azlain, Thalas, Elorin, and Wil dozed at the beginning of the first three hour shift.
Talon Moonwalker |
Will not be able to post for about 4 days, till monday. LARP event here in the UK. Am happy to be NPCed till my return tuesday morning
Talon's perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
I have no issue with rolls being made for me if it speeds up play, just to put it out there.
Talon stays on his guard as much as he can over the hours of his watch, the bow ready to be used, but not actually an arrow strung properly.

The night seems to explode in action. Gretchen is wandering around looking nervously out at the water. Windfavor is surveying the deck, his eyes constantly scanning, his body seemingly in tune with the ship, when he yells, "To arms, to arms." Gretchen shouts, "Oh no," as Talon tumbles into the sea from the rear of the ship.
As everyone awakes, the lean, human male is trying to strangle Elorin with a piece of wire.
