Wait until Squeak acts (cost only 1 initative so no biggie), then move, draw sword as part of move, and attack Squeak's foe (closest enemy to Bronwyn, as it'd be futile to try to squeeze into the corridor and fight Rathan for the privlege of being in the front.

Palisade saw Squeak reach for one of his explosives and instantly knew how to play the situation. It held back for a few instants so the alchemist could throw his bomb and have it explore with itself safely out of harm's way, then stepped forward to take Squeak's place, drawing its massive sword as it moved.

One eye glowing, Palisade brought down its sword in an overhead chop that bit deeply into the goblinoid's left shoulder, cutting through its armor and into the soft flesh underneath the protective layers. In the same move, it drew its sword out from the wound, twisting the blade to widen the wound, spraying blood on its own armor as it brought the weapon up to high guard.

You could but I will ask you to roll a to hit roll given the thing's speed and erratic 'flight pattern' (like humming bird).

I would say AC=23....

Potential for bargaining for information in exchange for right to disengage safely. Though possible enemy information management is good enough that hired help know little of importance. Still, benefit in resuming hostilities uncertain,’ it thought, then spoke up. ”Declaration. Killing you would serve little immediate purpose. The tall forged considered the water streaming into the passage. ”Suggestion. We should return back to higher ground to observe the situation, in case water levels rise significantly. The chances of another separate group of enemies being en route to this position seems unlikely.”

Tag: Bronwyn mostly, but others can feel free to join in

I assume the opening of the valves is part of some normal process of regulating water levels? There’s nothing around where someone hidden/invisible might be flicking switches to open them to annoy us or something, right? So I assume we could spend a little bit of time getting a hang of the sequence and see how high the water rises and how long it stays there… Palisade and Squeak could of course do scouting even when water is all the way to the roof ;^)

Action 1:

Bronwyn squealed in panic as water unexpectedly released very close to her, the bugbear completely forgotten. The water reached about mid-thigh and in her hurry to get back to the stairs, she slipped and almost fell in the water. She managed to grab hold of Squeak and she clung to him for stability. "The stairs seem like a good idea. Can I get some help?"

Looking at the map, it made more sense that she moves towards Squeak rather than Palisade because he's closer to the stairs.

Would her change in position before Action 2 (when the hummingbird emerges) affect the DC at all to hit the hummingbird? Obviously hoping it may be less :)

A circular metal hatch was set into the tunnel wall and engraved with arcane runes. This component was an intricate assemblage of clockwork and filigree

The little bird no longer flitted and buzzed about.

Upon closer examination, both Palisade and Squeak saw that the 'messenger' could be attached to their bodies...

There was no visible way to open the door and the only curious thing about it other than t radiated magic as the 'old' emblem of House Canith. This was engraved and carved in relief from the door. One could almost put fingers around the lines of the symbol to try and pry it out.

Rathan nodded his head approvingly at Bronwyn's actions, "Very wise magic." He refused to touch the warforged's soul advising the others, "When you pick up one end of the stick you pick up the other end too."

Action 1
Squeak hesitated to touch the hummingbird. "I want to take this with us. I would love to take it apart back in my workshop." His eyes tinged towards blue "I think I could attach it now, but doing so risks some form of trap that would leave you needing to cart out six hundred pounds of warforged. I'll just put in in my pouch for now."

Action 2
Squeak happily put his head in the tunnel to observer more, removing it to reveal a cockroach the size of a shoehorn now perched jauntily on his head.
"It appears there is a significant drop until it levels out. This leads to two problems. Firstly, the drop is significant enough that we would be damaged in the fall - and I assume Pallisade and I would go first to minimise damage to anyone below us. Secondly - and, I feel, more importantly - I do not think it likely we will be able to ascend this way."
"I suggest we lower one person, who can then carve steps into the wall as they descend. We will then be able to climb back up..." here he waved the cockroach away from his unwinking right eye, where it had climbed to. "... without risking our rope being cut."

"House Cannith is full of brilliant and civilized people. There must be a safe way down. I highly doubt that they would expect one of their own to drop forty feet amidst bugs to get where they need to go."

She contemplated Rathan's suggestion and a smile replaced her frown. "You are correct, fire is almost always the answer. It is possible that the bugs are covering up some sort of mechanism needed to descend the shaft." She motioned the others out of the way. "Let me clear our path."

Will use a fire jet. She'll start straight on to make sure those bugs fry and then move closer to angle it down the shaft. If she needs to use 2 to do this, she will.

So, the idea is to burn away some of the insects (there aren't that many) and then lower a warforged.

I hope you have some reinforced rope, right? Any climbing gear? :)

Also, will you anchor the rope or just have people on top holding on?

Bronwyn, feel free to obtain a feather fall scroll but as Squeak pointed out, it doesn't solve your issue of getting back up.

While the Lady d'Deneith was preparing to incinerate the insects the 'forged considered the length of the slide. "Hesitant suggestion. Once the shaft was free of creeping bugs and had some light, Bronwyn finally peeked into it. She then looked at the warforged, doubting any rope would hold them. "Is it possible for you two to brace yourself against the shaft walls and climb down that way gradually? Or are the walls too crumbly?"

If you use the rope then it's only a DC 5 so you're OK. You didn't make any headway with your first roll but you also didn't fall (you didn't fail by 5 or less).

Before anyone descended the rope Bronwyn pulled out her scrollcase and paged through some of the scrolls she's purchased. "If Squeak and Palisade are worried about falling I can make one of you lighter if you fall and I can make the other smaller and thus lighter." She eyes the rope dubiously. "Will the rope even hold your weight?"

Male Warforged Artificer (Alchemist) 5. AC 21. HP 43/43. HD 5/5, 1st 4/4. 2nd 2/2.

"Most rope has a safety factor, and are designed to carry multiple people. If I use two strands of rope, and descend alone, then I should be able to survive. While my chassis is very heavy, it is also quite tough."

Oops!
Squeak swung out over the chassis, lashing out with a foot and a hand to gain purchase on the stone. With a CRACK his adamantine plated foot gouged a fist size chunk of stone out of the wall, sending it plummeting into the darkness.
Squeak's eyes glowed brightly enough he could see the rock wall in front of his face, but otherwise he was surrounded by darkness as he dangled over the precipitous drop. 'This is why I have a fear of heights' he reminded himself. 'Fear - not phobia. Phobias are irrational, and it is completely rational for a half ton adamantine plated creature to fear STUPID THINGS LIKE THIS BREAKING'

"The stone is weaker than I thought" he apologised "I'm going to have descend using only the rope.". Carefully he inched his way down, hand by hand. 'Be very careful you don't cut the rope on your plates' he warned himself.
The rope ended about ten feet above the ground, where the tunnel had just started to curve. With a chest movement that looked like a deep breath - something he was practising to put Brownywn at ease - he let go of the rope and plummeted towards the ground.
The burned corpses of the insects acted like grease as he hit the curve of the tunnel, and rather than gouge great holes he found himself whistling forward, a small bump sending him once more airborne as the tunnel levelled out. "INCOMING!" he shouted frantically.

Palisade considerd the sheer descent for a moment and began removing its weapons and armor. With nothing to brace its feet on the way down to, it didn't fancy its chances fully loaded.

"Query. Should we seek to close to door behind us? The enemy is certain to try again, and while it is possible they have the means of opening the door, it would at least delay them for a moment," Palisade asked. It had by now bundled up its few possessions and was preparing to use the rope to lower them on the bottom.

Once safely on the bottom, Palisade wasted no time putting its gear back on and tightening the straps to hold every item secure against its body plating. It took note of companion Arleth Fadi's painful injury and considered the matter for a moment. True, it was more vital to save its healing for a real emergency - like when Lady d'Deneith twisted her ankle on the slippery surface of the tunnel, but it deemed likely the fact that there would be plenty other dangers ahead of them, and quite possibly another attempt by the enemy that had targeted them twice already. It would be prudent to have every member of the expedition fighting fit, to lessen the risk.

"Arleth Fadi," the tall 'forged declared, looming over the half-elf. "This one would heal your injury if you allow it, to better enable you to give your life in defence of Lad- Bronwyn," it finished, still struggling to keep to Lady d'Deneith's wholly inappropriate degree of referring to her with her given name alone.

Battle might be ahead, so it's only prudent to do a bit of healing... convert the shield of faith to CLW and use it on Vi. Should have done this before, really, but it slipped my mind.

Arleth eyed the enormous machine with a little apprehension. She's been about to take one of her potions, but she had to admit it would be nice to save them, if the warforged was able to help her.

"My thanks, Palisade. If you are able to, I would take healing gratefully."

"Query. Should we seek to close to door behind us? The enemy is certain to try again, and while it is possible they have the means of opening the door, it would at least delay them for a moment,"

"I agree with you, Palisade. We should close the hatch because I don't want more crazy warforged coming up behind us. Or bugbears for that matter. We can solve the problem of leaving once we have the item. For all we know, there's a different way out."

Not actually sure about the descent order so I'll just put Bronwyn's rolls next and you can work it in as necessary. Should be fun because she is weak and has no climb skill.

climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9
climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3

She started making her way down the rope. About halfway down the muscles in her arms were on fire (and not in a good way) and blisters were beginning to form on her delicate hands. Her one hand let go of its own accord and she shrieked as she dropped a little. She managed to brace herself against the wall so that she didn't actually fall but her one hand was rubbed raw from the friction.

climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

She barely made it down the rope and her hands were definitely blistered from rope burn. "Ow, ow, ow." She shakes her hands as if they're on fire. With a slight pout she said, "No one said that climbing would hurt."

Yep, this delicate flower is not going to be able to climb up if she barely was able to climb down :)

Rathan waited for his chance and made his way down the rope making the task look easy. Although he disagreed with closing the hatch he kept silent on the matter.
climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

The light from her ioun stone didn't go far. Arleth could tell that the place was big, and crumbly, but not much more than that. "Anybody got some light that'll go a bit further here? Nice to know what we're stepping into."

Rathan reaches into his pack and offers a sunrod to Arleth, "You can use this."

Bronwyn let our a scream as she was overtaken by the flesh-eating black beetles. They were crawling everywhere and they were climbing her, trying to get to her face.

She reacted in the only manner typical when she felt threatened, she threw fire at it.
