Ok, maybe I wasn't clear enough but you do not know where this 'E-213 Valve Cluster'. You do have a general idea, which is where you are now but it's like an old maze down here.

Palisade beheld all that was around them with reproach. The people down here did not seem to serve any practical purpose to the benefit of the City above them - the only thing that bred here was disease, discontent and more people of various races to contribute to the former two. It wondered why the Sharn Watch hadn't purified these warrens long ago, but decided that while half of the reason might be fear - it had heard the Watch rarely entered the lowest levels of the low, at least not except in force - mostly it was due to indifference.

The city above was prosperous, while the poor and the unwanted down here mostly preyed on each other, and aside from a few key resources, there was very few interests to protect down here. No doubt the Watch would come down hard on any of these people who rose above their station and ventured too many levels closer to the open sky, to teach their brethren their proper place. And it supposed the people down here would provide cheap, replaceable labor force to the city's smelters.

Yet it was irritated by the wasted potential. If these people were not to be killed, someone ought to find a more productive way of utilizing them, if they lacked the initiative to do it themselves. No doubt many of these wretches would gleefully grasp any branch of hope waved in their general direction.

'Hope...' Palisade thought, stopping for a second to push away a goblin who looked it might be getting ready to contemplate going for Lady d'Deneith's purse. 'Faith leads to hope, hope to greater effort,' it thought. Perhaps it should come and spread the word of the benevolent goddess-creator to these misguided souls. Teach them the true way, breath life to the ashes of their souls until the lower Sharn blazed like the heart of a forge. Then lead them out to build temples to venerate their goddess in, to spread the word further.

To cast down the other pretenders, so Melindri d'Cannith would be reign supreme in the hearts of all the people of Khorvaire.

The packed shifting masses and twisting warrens of the under city made it hard for the barbarian to get a feel for the dangers that might befall the party. His head swiveled around, side to side, overwhelmed by chaotic activity around him. He muttered to Arleth, "The ancestors no want me to wander around here for eternity. Best find guide." "Query. Gamy? This one thought food was for consuming. Do people like to play with it first?" Palisade asked, puzzled. He know some animals did play with their kills prior to eating them, but it hadn't thought humans and their ilk were among them. Besides, how would one play with a piece of skewered meat - more sinew and gristle, really, now that the 'forged took a closer look at the offered wares.

It didn't seem particularly bothered to discus the topic before the other three, and didn't say a word about the halfling. "Arleth, can I ask a favour?"

The half-elf looked up at the warforged curiously. What favor could such a large machine need? "Of course."

"I need someone I can trust, a connoisseur. Is this rat any good? I can only tell texture."

At first Arleth thought the hulking construct of metal and wood was joking. He had to be joking, right? But its eyes were glowing with a strange light, and she could only interpret it as an honest request.

"Um, well, rats aren't usually considered proper food by people living in Sharn proper," she explained. "Especially ones that have lived in sewage. There's a good chance they can spread disease if not cooked properly. However," she took the skewer, and examined it carefully. "These look very well done. And I've never eaten rat before..."

The guide carefully picked one of the chunks of meat off the stick, and gave it a sniff. There was a faint odor of garbage, overlaid by some serious garlic. Never one to pass up an opportunity to try something new, she took a bite.

And gagged. Spitting the meat onto the floor, she took a swig from her water skin. "Ugh. Horrible. No, Squeak, it's not good. Not at all."

"Statement. By the grace of the creator-goddess, this one is able to summon a light that will not fail even under a deluge of water," Palisade declared, touching the small locket welded to its body just below its neck. For a moment, it lowered its head as if in prayer and murmured words of invocation.

"... manual, page thirty seven, paragraph..." a sharp-eared listener might make out the occasional word. "Regulations state... proper working conditions... lightning no less bright than..." at the end of its bizarre "prayer", a bright greyish-purple light flickered into being around Palisade's left fist, steadying and growing stronger until it illuminated their surroundings like a bizarre torch.

"The creator-goddess is ever generous with her servants," the tall 'forged intoned, for once with a touch of actual emotion in its voice.

Action 2

Arleth eyed the staircase with mistrust. It would be very easy to set up an ambush down here. On the other hand, the chances of a party of adventurers coming down here specifically was pretty slim. On the other other hand, if their opponent had gotten here first, he could have arranged something.

She settled on a warning. "If we find that you have led us astray, Skakan, you will regret it. My two companions here don't need to sleep, so they will not rest until they have found you, and finished you. Understand?"

intimidation: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

That being said, she handed him the money. Looking down the dark staircase, she realized they'd need light. The more the better. As her companions used spells to illuminate the darkness, she reached into a pocket and pulled out a small, glowing stone out of a black velvet pouch. The ioun stone probably had done something more interesting once, but now it was chipped and pitted. But it held a permanent light spell as well as any inanimate object, and it still could hover. Tossing it into the air, Arleth said, "Natantis." The glowing stone began to circle her head, its orbit slightly erratic, but it made for a nice light.

Seeing that the others were waiting for her to take the lead, Arleth began to make her way down the staircase. She kept her eyes and ears peeled for any signs of danger, or traps.

Sure, give the gal with no armour the lead. ;) Arleth is okay with being in front.

Action 2:

The wizard felt more like a Bronwyn sandwich than usual. She was getting used to regularly having the 'forged' on either side of her but they were keeping closer than usual and she could barely see anything around her except for parts of Squeak and Palisade.

When the sound of running water became louder, Bronwyn's heart began to beat faster. She had never felt comfortable around water. She didn't even like rain and dirty, fast flowing water was another - more scary - story.

Action 3:

Palisade wrote:
"Assumption reasonable," Palisade agreed. "Survival and safety of La- Bronwyn is primary. Survival and safety of individual Arleth Fadi is secondary. Suggestion. If you see this one failing in its task, this one suggests you drop the secondary priority in favor of the primary."

Bronwyn had been traveling with the warforged long enough that the oddity of their words didn't even register with the wizard. They had put her well-being above anything else which sometimes was inconvenient but in this case was strangely comforting considering her fear of the water.

Squeak and Arleth wrote:

"Also we should probably do something about lighting. If this light goes out while we are underwater we may take too long reaching the surface. Brownyn, Arleth, I know humans require air. How many minutes can you hold your breath for? Can you do ten?"

Amused, Arelth said, "I doubt I could do more than 2 or 3. But I can swim."

The wizard's voice was coloured by fear when she spoke, "I can't swim and I don't like water. If I don't panic, I may be able to hold my breath for about one minute - but I really don't want to find out." She brightened somewhat at the request for light. "I can provide light." She said some arcane words and touched her two barrettes which began to glow softly making it look like she had a halo.

How high is the tunnel? Could Bronwyn ride on either Squeak or Palisade's shoulders like a little kid does on their parent?

Bronwyn couldn't really see the water tunnel because of her position between the 'forged' so she asked Arleth a few questions. "Can the grate be opened at all? Is there a pattern to which valves open when?"

Can Arleth even see the enemy? It's hard to tell if that passage is open to where she is, or if it's totally enclosed until you get into the sewer. If she moves to behind Palisade, will she be able to see?

Bronwyn peaked around the corner under Palisade's arm and caught sight of what she assumed was another crazy warforged. She pointed her finger at him, making sure to cast above Rathan's head, and said the words to release a bolt of fire at it.

I'm hoping that she can point over Rathan's head and so not catch him in the line of fire. If she can't do this then she won't roast her teacher :)

Squeak's eyes brightened. "Sounds like spare parts!" he muttered happily.

"Enemy movement ahead!" Palisade announced as it reached for its weapons.

You don't have to roll to hit but that assumes that there is a 'clear' line for you to fire (pun intended).

However, in this case, Rathan provides soft cover (even though he's short) so I'm going to say you can't fire unless you now roll a ranged touch attack but you have to take care into consideration the soft cover (-2) and firing into melee (-4) penalties.

------------
Arleth cannot see the warforged from her position.

If she moves behind Palisade, she will eventually be able to see it once the forged gets on the N-S hallway.

Arleth couldn't see who Rathan was engaging with, and she started to move closer. However, at Palisade's warning, she spun around and peered into the depths of the western passage. Seeing nothing yet, she pulled out her wand and cast a spell of protection on herself. She pulled her ioun stone from its orbit and tossed it at Squeak, where it started another drunken orbit around the warforged's head. Drawing her daggers, she waded across the filthy sewage, crouched in the darkness and waited.

casting mage armour from her wand, moving close to the wall between valve 8 and 10.

This was NOT my intention at all. Arleth had counted on coming up on their attackers from behind and flanking them, not being left alone with one. And considering her role as "secondary", she didn't imagine she'd be getting help any time soon.

Two options. Attack or retreat. A quick look around showed that Squeak had his own enemy, and if she moved any closer to him she'd be stuck between bugbear and hobgoblin. She was on her own for now, so she better make it count.

Keeping as low as she could, she lashed out with both daggers. With the first she swept the blade across the bugbears leg, hoping to open the flesh. With the second she stabbed upwards, towards his belly. It was hard to see what he had for armour, but maybe she'd get lucky.

dagger 1: 1d20 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ (13) + 3 + (5) = 21 [ooc] action point time! [/dice]
dagger 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

damage dagger 1: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
damage dagger 2: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

The first dagger sliced clean through the hobgoblins thigh, releasing a gush of blood and a furious bellow. The thrust, however, encountered some sort of resistance, and turned aside without being bloodied.

It proved too difficult to hit the warforged with fire and so Bronwyn moved up against the wall which gave her a clean line at the hobgoblin without hitting Squeak. This way, Palisade could also move and hopefully draw the crazy warforged out of the tunnel.

Pointing her finger at the hobgoblin, the fire elementalist released her favorite element at it.

damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Ref for half, DC=16

The fire did what it was supposed to do and singed the creature a little but its potency was weakened by the new surge of water from the valves.

What kind of action is it to activate Bronwyn's dragonmark? Is it a swift action, standard action...?

Male Warforged Artificer (Alchemist) 5. AC 21. HP 43/43. HD 5/5, 1st 4/4. 2nd 2/2.

Squeak stepped back, bringing his massive hammer to bear and standing back-to-back with Palisade. Then he casually tossed a small vial at the hobgoblin in front of him.
5ft back
attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
scatter 1d8, 1 = same direction: 1d8 ⇒ 4 one square NE
5 points scatter damage, as I understand 1d6+4 scatter.
The hobgoblin batted the vial aside, only to have it explode next to him. While protected from the worst of the blast, sticky burning fluid covered him. The Hobgoblin screamed in pain. As squeak stated with satisfaction "THAT is a secret sauce."
