Welcome Rathan! Took a look at your fluff, and it looks great. He'll be fun to play with. :)

Arleth looked at Bronwyn. "It's your call, ma'am -- sorry -- Bronwyn. You have my services for the week at least, and if this is what you desire to do with your time in Sharn, I'm willing to help."

tag Bronwyn

Goddess above, but I have a hard time typing Bronwyn. It always comes out Brownwn the first time. That's it, I'm calling her Bro.

Action 2

Arleth looked up and examined the newcomer as he arrived. She knew what he'd be seeing - a seasoned-looking half-elf, hair in cornrow braids, a swirling tattoo on one shoulder, dressed in well-worn but clean leather vest and pants. Of course, the newcomer wouldn't know that she could change this Face on a whim.

For the first time she realized that this new quest might lead to her clients learning her true race. It was likely that a change of Face might be useful on their trip down to the Cogs. She wasn't sure how she felt about that. Unconsciously, Arleth reached a hand into her satchel and touched her notebook, reassuring herself that it was still there, along with her notes and sketches of every other Face she wore.

Action 1:

Arleth wrote:
"It's your call, ma'am -- sorry -- Bronwyn. You have my services for the week at least, and if this is what you desire to do with your time in Sharn, I'm willing to help."

"How could I say no to my first quest? My boots are already ruined from traipsing through Old Sharn so a trip into the Cogs is no big deal. Anyone can come to Sharn and experience the nightlife. We'll be seeing a part of Sharn that most never will. How exciting!"

Action 2:

As Rathan was introduced and made his way over to the table, Bronwyn nodded politely. We surely make an unlikely group. Two warforged, a halfling, and two females walk into a tavern... She waited to see if Elaydren had anything more for them before engaging with their new companion.

Action 2:

Rathan moves across the room with a confidence that transcends his size, the swagger of a veteran. He sauntered up to the table where he was summoned and climbs up into an empty chair. Instead of sitting he stands on the seat of the chair and examines the party with a smoldering glare. His green eyes stand out in contrast to his bronzed skin and dark mane of hair as he takes the measure of the party. With a satisfied grunt he folds his well muscled arms across his deep chest and announces in full rich baritone, "Ko reira he ra pai ki te mate."

Halfling translation:

"It is a good day to die.

Palisade gaze Lady d’Deneith a long look but did not voice its concerns. It found the risk of... irritating the most powerful Cannith Baron inadvisable, but if Lady d’Deneith gave the order it would have to obey, and try its hardest to keep her from harm’s way. And perhaps her life, at the least, would be safe from Merrix’s revenge, her being a ‘marked noble of another family.

The tall ‘forged fixed his single eye on the primeval-looking Halfling, considering the potential threat as he ever did when anyone who might be carrying a weapon came close to Lady d’Deneith.

’Observation. Appearance of a tribal warrior from the Talenta Plains. Physical prowess often underestimated due to short stature, though rarely twice. Often employing unusual weapons and tactics. Current behavior seems to indicate arrogance and bravado, or possibly the beginnings of a mating ritual to establish breeding privileges. Thoughtful pause. The lack of a female of the species in the vicinity makes the latter option less likely.’

Action 1
Squeak made an internal note to show his new footware designs to Bronwyn. Gold plated iron wouldn't be ruined by mere liquid, and they were practical as well. He'd managed to get the weight down to twelve pounds each, but had a feeling ten would be the magic number.

Action 2
Desperate to appear friendly, but clueless as to what was just said, Squeak fell back on a technique he'd been taught by one of the old campaigners in his unit. "Te mate?" he asked.

'Ah yes, the old repeat the last two words as a question. Never fails... though, statistically about two times out of ten it's been a problem.'

Ah, yes, I do have a 'decent' bunch of players. You guys are funny.

I hope the levity of the game doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the game. It certainly enhances my enjoyment of it.

Like I said, just RP the rest of the day and I'll add more information during the recap later today.

Elaydren quickly stepped in to prevent any misunderstanding, "Rathan, I don't think our guests speak your native tongue so you'll have to switch to the common tongue like you do with me."

She turned to the others and in particular to the ladies at the table, "I'm sure that means 'Good day' or something like that."

How well does Rathan speak common? You know, being an uncouth barbarian and all.

Palisade glanced at his long-time companion, the surprise it felt not showing on its featureless face. Truly, Squeak was a unit of the world, seeming to know the smatterings of every language they ran across. "Admission. Unit Squeak, you never cease to amaze," it rumbled, inclining its head at the alchemist in profound respect.

Bronwyn speaks halfling and she's all over this :) She may not be overly familiar with their culture but she can understand the words.

As Rathan spoke, Bronwyn leaned across the table to address Elaydren. "I know you said he was resourceful but is there a chance he may be depressed? He's talking about dying. That's not very reassuring. Capable beings stay alive."

I absolutely love Squeak's inner dialogue. I was laughing so hard this morning. Although with 20 pounds of boot weighing her down it would definitely keep her in one place which would make Palisade happy because she'd be easily protected :)

She cocked her head, "Him? Depressed? Nah, he's just... intense, you know? Mind you that I've only known him for a few months..."

She leaned in closer to Bronwyn and Arleth, "Just between us, the girls in this place just swoon over him."

Swoon? The halfling's mere proximity caused females to faint? Palisade tilted its head as it tried to puzzle out this surprising morsel of information.

It had heard of animals that played dead at the first sight of a predator, in the hope that the beast would leave a dead carcass alone, perhaps in fear of disease fouling the meat, but the 'forged had always thought that to be a particularly stupid form of survival strategy. In the battlefield, it was usual to go through the enemy bodies and make sure no-one was playing possum. Did individual Elaydren suggest women sought to avoid the halfling's attention by feigning death? Or was the passing out not voluntary on their parts after all? If so, what fell magic did the tribal warrior wield? Truly, it would need to remain vigilant, lest Lady d'Deneith succumb during its watch.

That's awesome :)

Rathan takes one more look at the group gathered around the table, raising an eyebrow at Squeek's response, before he acknowledges Elaydren's request and says slowly, "The words of your people still taste strange in my mouth." He works his jaw and continues, "Your guessing of the words is close. The words are the way warriors of my tribe greet each other." He adds with a knowing grin, "The words we say to woman are different."

While he has the party's attention he introduces himself, "In your tongue I speak the words so others may know me. I am Rathan and I do not fear death." Keeping his gaze on the Warforged he asks Elaydren, "You did not speak to me of there being two of the soulless in your tent."

Rathan can generally convey his ideas in common. Although he has trouble with context, sentence structure, grammar, and missunderstands or uses the wrong word now and then.

Arleth's first instinct was to smile mockingly at Elaydren's comment about the halfling's effect on women. Then the small man turned his gaze on her, and...something interesting happened to her knees. Hmmmm....been a while since I've had a halfling Face. Might need to think about meeting this one again, when the mission is over.

Extending her hand, she said, "Arleth Fadi, of Sharn. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"Whakatara," Rathan curses in Halfling. "My speaking may not be most correctness but I will try to lift your ignorance." He looks up, takes a breath and continues, The Elders teach that all things have a soul. Stones, trees, beasts, ore," He points his thumb at his chest, "and people. All things that have ancestors have a soul. They have no ancestors so they cannot have a soul," he concludes as he points at the Warforged.

He continues and assures his employer, "It will be no problem for me to work with these two. They cannot take my spirit from me as my ancestors watch over me." He nods his head vigorously, "Yes there is wisdom in this partnership my people say, 'when the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone clawfoot dies but the pack survives.' Yes it will work." He continues to nod his head.

"It is therefore likely that the construct that broke from that warforged has passed information back, and that they will be aware that we are the only holders of the knowledge. I assert they will therefore come for us as soon as possible, and will be attempting to follow us now."

Action 3:

Bronwyn looked at Palisade and Squeak. "I don't think they, or any of us will take offense. We're pretty sure that the warforged that we fought last night killed Bonal. And it was cra-zy. It was intent on attacking Squeak and Palisade just because they were with us, flesh and blood. If its attitude reflects this Lord of Blades then they can't get their hands on this heirloom. There was no reasoning with it."

The wizard's eyes lit up with the mention of fire. Bronwyn smiled knowingly and said, "I will gladly bring the fire."

Palisade nodded at Squeak’s practical approach to the problem. ”Declaration. This one has never seen a soul, not its own nor anyone else’s. The concept of a soul is pure conjecture, expectation without basis of proof. Thoughtful pause. Much like most religions. Belief in a thing that cannot be substantiated. Profoundly relieved. This one is blessed to have met its creator-goddess in the flesh and thus has validated its belief without room for doubt.”

When he heard these remarks Rathan was filled with wonder at this girls lack of understanding, Obviously she is slow of thought. I am glad the ancestors put her in my path so I can educate her. He cautioned himself to be patient and was reminded, Take care the hammer never taught the nail anything.

With controlled exuberance he replied, "Your lack of knowing is fitting for an outlander. Take solace in my words girl as you soon will learn truth. I will instruct you and increase your knowing of these things while we journey together."

As he heard the remarks of the Warforged he pointed out to his student, "Listen to these two, the words they speak agree with the words that have come out of my mouth." Again he is filled with happiness to have someone to instruct and recalled, train a man change one person but train a woman and you change a tribe.

He finished addressing Bronwyn by asking, "A teacher needs to know the name of the student, what are you called?"

Action 3

Rathan quietly listened to the conversation, only letting out a soft grunt when his student showed to much interest in fire. The topic of the conversation reminded Rathan of his own quest. In his mind he thanked his ancestors for giving him the two Warforged, It takes jackal to catch a jackal.

Palisade considered the concept for a moment, recalling the tiny winged construct that had taken wing from the chest cavity of the downed enemy 'forged. There was some merit to the concept, but it rather thought the enemy had got things backwards, trading in for a smaller unit. In its mind's eye, Palisade could see its current body safely contained inside the chest of a juggernaut of truly epic proportions, a giant 50 feet tall, armored in adamantine alloy several inches thick, shouldering aside transient annoyances like forests and villages as it roamed through Khorvaire, bringing the joyous news of creator-goddess' existence to the whole of the civilized world...

... and burned the heretics who declined to convert voluntarily to the One True Faith with its built-in alchemical fire dispensers where they stood, to teach them the error of their ways.

Warmed by these happy thoughts, Palisade made a mental note to approach unit Squeak later to inquire if he could help it flesh out the concept.

The fact that he once again avoided her question did not escape the wizard's notice. Maybe he doesn't know and doesn't want to admit it. Whatever the case, she was beginning to get bored with that conversation and let it drop. It was obvious she wasn't going to get the answer she sought.

Arleth was absurdly pleased by the question. She paid careful attention to detail with all of her Faces, and made no decision lightly or without reason. Yet it was rare to anybody to notice, much less question, the details.

"In a way. The design is handed down from mother to daughter. If I have a daughter, I will add another loop, here," she pointed to an empty spot near her bicep, "which she will inherit." For a moment Arleth forgot that the Face she wore wasn't her own, and that "Arleth" would never have a family.

It is likely they'll want to beat us to the schema, rather than let us get our hands on it. We will need to be very vigilant."

Turning to their new client, she asked, "Do you have anything that can help us, or any contacts that can at least keep watch, or get in touch with us if they see anything?"

I notice our advance isn't in party treasure - did she hand the money over? Vi will be shopping, if so.

Mea culpa. :)

Yes, you have 100 gp to spend.

That's 100gp per person?

Action 2

Arleth split the money up between the five of them. "There's 20 gp each," she said. "Is there anything you need to do or buy before we head out?" She wished the advance had been a little more generous - there were a few potions and magic items she could think of that would be helpful in a situation like this.

Action 3

Arleth led them around the smelly wares, explaining, "Rat's Market. They come and go, show up any old place down here. It's mostly garbage, though sometimes the cellar dwellers come up with something interesting. Usually stollen or illegal."

I'll have more for action 2 once I find out where the others want to go. I'm assuming it was 100gp to share, not each.

I keep forgetting to adjust for you guys being 2nd level. I adjusted the 'challenges' so i guess I should adjust the 'loot' as well.

So let's make 250 gp (50 gp per person) and 2,250 more when you successfully complete the mission.

Questions?

Game on!

Arleth smiled, hoping to diffuse the tension. "If you believe cake does not have a soul, then you have not eaten good cake. When we are done with this mission, I will treat you all to khaal and cake at Tanglewood Cafe. Then we can at least argue about souls on a full stomach."

"Food is always welcome, but it is easier to fill an empty belly than an empty head." Rathan replied with a bow.

Really tired will post more tomorrow :)

Bronwyn smiled. "I think you mean 50gp each. I don't have time to scribe any scrolls but I think it best if I pick up a scroll or two or else another healing potion to take with me."

The wizard nodded. "That's what it looks like to me. I wonder what they're shoving each other about?" Bronwyn craned her neck to see if she could see what was on the blanket.

Rathan smiled with pride as his student caught the mistake. He enthusiastically slapped her on the back, ”Good, by trying often the young Glidewing learns to fly.”

”Make way we come see what rat’s sell,” Rathan announced as he moved through the crowd and tried to see the wares for sale.

Squeak shadowed Bronwyn through the decrepit basement of the old tower. Keeping space for his charge nearly drove him mad. 'These people have no respect for...oof!'. Whoever had interrupted his thoughts with a well placed shove had vanished into the tunnels by the time he turned around.

At the point he saw the Rat's Market, he'd had enough. "Permission to use lethal force?" he asked. "These people seem on the verge of a riot."

Action 2

Vi led them to a magic shop where she knew they wouldn't be cheated. After grabbing a healing potion for herself, she told the others, "I need to run out and grab something, I'll be less than an hour. Next door is a great little cafe, I'd recommend grabbing a bite to eat. I'll meet you there soon."

Once free of the others, Arleth made her way to Jorlyn's main bolthole. She wanted to pick up his gear. She's had a leather tool belt custom-made for him, providing easy access to her magic items, potions, and tools. Once she retrieved it, she realized that Arleth was a bit thinner than her half-elven cat-burglar. Hoping that the others wouldn't notice the difference, she adjusted her body slightly so that the belt didn't fall off her hips.

After placing her new healing potion beside the one she already had, Arleth made sure that the rest of her tools and items were easily to hand, then ran back to the cafe to meet with the others.

Unit Squeak had things well at hand, Palisade thought, pleased with its companion's professional approach to the problem. It kept to Lady d'Deneith's left flank, leaving Squeak to deal with the right, to best keep potential attackers at bay, though in the crowded, dark and occasionally debris-filled tunnels of the lower Sharn, managing that proved a true challenge and not a few times it had to admit failure when some stranger got within dagger's reach of the woman it had been tasked to defend. By now, thinning the herd was beginning to sound like a really appealing solution.
