Was something missing from the turn recap? It ends with, "They both"
Sometimes I'll upload the file without having it saved and I get that issue. I think I meant to describe their conversation a little more and how they threw about furtive glances to some of the other guests.
However, the turn works if we just ignore those two last words.

Palisade felt at a loss; it knew it had few convincing excuses to roam the ballroom with all the rich and powerful guests, as its cover role was a mere assistant to unit Squeak's master baker. But its scouting efforts in the back rooms with the servant horde had not led to a favorable outcome either. And now its latest idea had turned out inconclusive; the gnomes were known for their mastery in the arts of illusions; it wouldn't be too out of place for someone else to mask his presence with magic, not that Palisade trusted in its ability to pierce mere mundane disguises either. It was looking like it had to settle down to wait and hope it happened to be in a proper place to react if and when something happened.

Piedra watched as the ambassador talked to the person in the blue dragon mask. She wished she had a potion to allow you to see through masks. As she tried to figure out what was going on, she noticed something strange about some of the waiters.
Not sure what the implication is here - that the waiters are guards, or that some of the waiters are moving in with intent to attack imminently. Also, there's no doubt that I'm really enjoying the game, and am happy to go rambling off on side tangents,
as long as everybody is still having fun.
Bronwyn d'Deneith |
I highly doubt Bronwyn will make either of those rolls but here it goes...
perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
sense motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
She's obviously blissfully unaware and enjoying herself. Feel free for anyone to drag her off the dance floor and try to get her to focus :)
Bronwyn noticed that Grilsha left the dance floor as soon as the song ended. She was about to follow when she saw Lucina sidle up to the woman. Maybe she'll have more luck, being two peas in a pod and all that. So she decided that one more dance wouldn't hurt.
Lucina Mindragus |
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Lucina's shoulders slumped as the Grilsha ignored her. Whatever. Focus on the mission. She thought, not quite sure why she was so disappointed. This woman was their enemy after all. Still, she stayed nearby to keep an eye on her movements and discover what exactly it was that she was watching to intently. As she did, she noticed the shape of a weapon under a waiter's apron. Then another...and another. They seem...armed...and alert. She looked around for the others. Keeping a side eye on Grilsha, she approached Palisade, "Have you noticed how...well armed the serving staff looking?"

Slight modification to the above...
The serving staff does not bear weapons but they just look like they are ready for combat (monks, brawlers, etc.)
I'll see about moving this along later today.

Palisade |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
"Have you noticed how...well armed the serving staff looking?"
"Query. Alert? This one assumed they were merely exhibiting a prudent alertness as to where they were needed the most," the 'forged replied, then took another look at the milling servants. True, now that it had been pointed out to it, there seemed an unusual undercurrent of almost military watchfulness to the activities of part of the servant force, as if they were soldiers watching the field of battle, looking for places to deploy siege weapons and dig trenches.
"Embarrassed admission. There may be something to what you say, companion Lucina Mindragus. But are these soldiers here to ward off an expected surprise attacks or are they the ones waiting to launch it?"
Profession: Soldier: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 That's a nice roll, finally... so, in Palisade's expert opinion, are those folks more likely to be up to no good or merely defenders hiding in plain sight?
Palisade |
Ok, so undercover guards? Is the roll good enough to gauge if they are nervous enough that they expect some special trouble today or if they are relaxed enough to suggest this is just another day at work for them, and another party they go undercover in?
Bronwyn d'Deneith |
During Bronwyn's dancing, she noticed that the Ambassador had taken to the floor and so the wizard convinced herself that she could keep a better eye on the woman by continuing to dance herself. It meant a few times that she ended up leading instead of Tanis in order to stay close to Ambassador Krell.
sense motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
It was a long shot...so not surprising that Bronwyn continues to be utterly useless :)

Piedra joined Palisade and Lucina. "I noticed that too. Maybe attacking one to replace them isn't a great idea after all. Ugh! I wish the 'Sleeves could do a better job of illusions. I don't think it could perfectly replicate a mask. Hmmm....I wonder...."
She thought a moment, then said, "Maybe they have extra of those domino masks in the kitchen. We know one of the waiters is a changeling. I'll try to impersonate them, and get my hands on a mask. Then at least I can stay closer to Krell, maybe overhear her. Lucina, spill a drink on me. High up, get my face."

Dripping wet, Piedra stumbled, cursing into the kitchen. She let herself relax back into her natural form, glad that she'd chosen a dress with fabric stretchy enough to accommodate that. With the Sleeves, she made the dress look like the outfits of the serving staff. "Traveller's Tricks!" she grabbed a towel and began mopping her face. "Bloody clumsy dancers. My mask is ruined. Is there a spare around here?" She towelled wine from her hair and looked around.
bluff: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
bluff: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 Using Inspired for a free re-roll. (Not to be confused with Charmer, which gives me one free diplomacy re-roll, which I already used today. )
Lucina Mindragus |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19 Shakes fist to the heavens
"Uh..okay..." was all Lucina got out before Piedra all but walked into the drink she was holding. Unsure what else to do, she returns watching Grilsha and trying to find the object of her fascination.
Squeak Warforged |
Squeak waited patiently. Primarily he watched Bronwyn. If their quarry worked out who they were, there was every chance some dancer might twirl up and plant a knife in her back. Idly he once again considered how to make an elegant ballgown out of articulated plate.
Vi Olaro |
That's the first time you beat me to changing my avatar picture! :)
Vi moved nimbly through the ballroom, handing drinks to dancers. She stayed as close to the ambassador as she could, trying to over hear her conversation, and only leaving to quickly refill her tray when necessary.
sense motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 bloody well about time!
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
After a few moments she moved back to the others, offered them a drink, and said, "She's watching those two - the eagle and the blue dragon. Something's upset her. Somebody go talk to them." She moved back to the ambassador, trying to stay within hearing range.
Palisade |
Given the choices above, we can say that they are alert trying to determine when they will need to act.
But "when" rather than "if" is the key word? Ok, will take it from there...
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Big surprise...
"Confident. This one believes the armed servants are members of the local authorities, providing additional security because of the high density of influential people in this social function," the 'forged offered once the tides of the party brought the companions together. "Addendum. They seem agitated enough to suggest they have a reason to expect they will be needed during the course of the evening; perhaps they have already detected something we have missed, due to them having the benefit of operating on familiar ground. This one suggests we do not be the party that triggers their hostility, but rather we attempt to watch whom they watch."
Bronwyn d'Deneith |
Alright, then. Bronwyn hadn't been with the others so I wasn't sure if Vi was including her in that.
A waiter had pulled Bronwyn off the dance floor when she was on the outskirts of the dancers and whispered, "goblin farts" in her ear. Bronwyn giggled as she instantly realized the waiter was Vi. Turning to Tanis, the wizard excused herself before following the waiter over to Palisade and Lucina.
When the two masked people were pointed out by Vi, Bronwyn smiled, "How intriguing. I'll go and see whether Mr. Eagle will grace me with a dance."
Working her way over to the dark haired man with the eagle mask, Bronwyn curtsied and smiled. Her eyes sparkled as she made her request, "Forgive me if this is too forward but may I have this dance?"

"Yes. I noticed the same." Lucina replied to Vi. "I assume you don't want me to talk to them." she commented drily as she looked to the others. "Though we should be careful. One of them could be Lucan."
Vi Olaro |
Vi sighed, already moving on with her drinks. "Yes, you talk to one of them. Take Squeak. I'm a server, I can't be chatting. Just think - what would Bronwyn say?"

Squeak led Lucina out on the dance floor. There a thousand pillow books with dashing heroes, swooning partners, fencing and balls. In none of them has a Warforged been praised for their grace at dancing, and Squeak proved why that was. Metal shod feet that could kick in a shield stamped down with hundreds of pounds of force near Lucina's vulnerable feet. The dance was performed with the military precision of a musket volley, and about as much subtlety. The clash and clang of metal made it hard to hear the subtlety of the music though, which made it harder for Lucina to realise just how far off the beat Squeak was.
Squeak danced towards the dragon-masked lady, steering Lucina largely by using his superior mass to force her that way. The concept of 'leading' was replaced by 'dragging'.

Dude! It's Bronwyn. Of course she didn't notice it! But she did do better than I thought she would. That's like someone else's 20.
The man's crotchedy demeanor didn't phase Bronwyn. She had years of dealing with Palisade after all. "My apologies, Mr. Eagleman. I prefer a world where everyone knows everyone as friends but I can appreciate others' desire for mystery." She took a step or two without speaking, wondering if her partner would fill the silence with small talk.
If he doesn't speak...
"That cake was phenomenal, was it not? Who knew that a 'forged could make something that beautiful and intricate? Ambassador Krell seemed quite impressed. Such an impressive woman in her own right. Wouldn't you agree?"
Lucina Mindragus |

Assuming I'm not overhearing anything useful by hanging around Krell...
Vi refilled her tray and made her way over towards Grilsha. She had disengaged from her dance partner, and was again hanging near the fringes, scanning the crowd. Approaching her, Vi held out the tray, and said, "Basiran gold? It's the last of its vintage, not to be missed."

Having practically given up on locating the subject on its own, Palisade had fallen back on trying to keep an eye (the only one it had) on the undercover agents in stead, since it at least knew what to look now. Momentarily, though, that observation was marred by worry about Lady d'Deneith, as she was being dragged around the dance floor by an elderly male of the species.
The 'forged had stiffened even further once it had noticed that, if such a thing was possible. There she was, arms wrapped all around the man, leaving herself full of openings. He might pull a concealed blade from the voluptuous sleeves of his jacket to stab her in the back, or he might merely shift her grip to strangle her. That either of these actions was unlikely to end well for the man himself was beyond notice - Lady d'Deneith was a noble of a Dragonmarked house and thus a target for any number of malcontents. Feigning interest might just have been the assassin's tactic to lure his innocent target close... yet to try an intervene now might provoke just the kind of an attack Palisade feared. No... safer to just wait and mark the man for later elimination, once the Lady was out of harm's way and the party was concluded.
After all, how hard would it be to find a man with an eagle's mask on his face in the streets of the city?
Lucina Mindragus |
Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 To avoid crushed feet :0
Lucina was not thrilled with the prospective of having to speak with a mark. However, before she could give Vi her characteristic scowl, she founded herself whisked into metal beat down that she could only assume Squeak thought was dancing. "Hey!" she exclaimed in an unusually high voice. However, any further attempts to argue became a secondary priority to ensuring that all her bones remained unbroken. Her fear gave her a level of dexterity that she had previously thought impossible. She let out a sigh of relief when they finally reached the dragon masked lady and the waltz of likely death finally came to an end. Approaching the woman, still dizzy, she mumbled semi incoherently. "So uh...You like dragons huh? Are you..um...enjoying the festivities..."
Probably going to be useless...but that's what you get for sending Lucina to talk to someone :p

LOLOL! This party feels pretty much like every social gathering of more than 8 people I've ever been to. I'm sure there's something going on all around me, but I just can't put my finger on it.
Vi had a thought, and moved away from Grilsha. Pulling her notebook from a pocket, she tore out a blank page and wrote, Grilsha, Please, leave with your brother. Do not let this happen. You're better than this.
Stepping back into the kitchen, she found an empty corner and changed her appearance yet again. Nothing drastic, just an inch taller, a bit heavier, blond hair under the mask instead of brown. She then folded the note carefully and half-covered it with a napkin. She put a small pastry on it, then returned to the dance floor.
The pastry was nearly swiped by another guest, but Vi evaded him and made her way back to Grilsha. Using a lower-pitched voice, she said, "Ma'am, an admirer has sent this to you." She presented the tray so that the note was obvious.

Lucina Mindragus |
Lucina's pretty antisocial, but she is actually supposed to be pretty perceptive and intuitive. I think the party has just had a lot of bad luck with rolls. For example, even with a +10, I don't think I've beaten a Sense Motive at the party.
Lucina shifted uncomfortably at the woman's question. "Um...Sort of...Not very well...He made the cake tonight...and sort of forced me to dance. Perhaps if we keep talking, I won't have to dance with him again...It is a...dangerous activity..."
Palisade |
Squeak felt confusion as the ladies turned away. 'Did I do it wrong? Maybe I should get lessons.' The Forged paused for a few long moments, then walked over to Palisade.
"Observation. Unit Squeak, this one believes your attempt at a herd call went unheard. Perhaps the difference in plumage was too great? Insightful suggestion. Or perhaps the dragon-masked female's role in this current, temporary herd is different, not amenable to pair-forming. Consider the scaled meer-rats that infest the plains west of the Faded Forest. This one recalls they select individuals to stand watch while the other members of the tribe hunt and gather food or play with their young. They will loose a warning cry to alert their kindred when a predator is spotted, so all may escape back to their tunnels. Perhaps that female holds a similar social function this day - to observe, she cannot partake of the entertainment, lest she lose her vantage point."

Lucina continued to watch the dragon masked lady closely, after she walked away and was able to see the charm spell that had been attempted. Interesting. She was trying to subdue him. Quietly perhaps? But it did not seem to work. Now the only question is her motives? Lucina surveyed the field. But the priority is that he does not escape again...
She muttered her own spell, as violet fire began to spiral up around her. As she focused on Lucan the flame shot forth like an arrow and surrounded him with a sparkling Violet light. At least that should make it hard for him to slink away... She thought to herself, as she headed upwards towards Bronwyn.
