DungeonWorld Escape the Slave Pits! (Inactive)

Slave Pit Map

1 to 50 of 82 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

So I have come to realize that I had overloaded myself on PF PbP AP's. While I love them, there are just SOOO many details that have to be tracked and I found that all of the games were suffering because of it, so I have decided to let one of them go.

That said I am interested in starting a DungeonWorld game, which for those who know is much less crunchy, and much more RP. It is a decently fast system and I think I can keep it moving.

I plan to start with an introductory "Mod/Seed" called The Slave Pit of Drahzu. Then if folks are happy we can take those characters off into their own world and adventure.

What is DungeonWorld?:

This is completely stolen from DMMooshybooshy
This campaign will be run using Dungeon World rules. If you've never played Dungeon World, I strongly encourage you to check it out. I prefer it over Pathfinder (even though I love PF) because DW is far less crunchy and obsessed with minor details. I want theatrics, I want drama, I want adventure, I don't want to waste time calculating a bunch of obscure modifiers from different sources.

Here's the skinny on how Dungeon World works.

1) The wiki is here. The "Playing the Game" section is very useful to read for beginners.

2) Everything revolves around 2d6. To do anything that requires a roll, you choose which of your stats makes the most sense for what you're trying to do, add that modifier to 2d6, and away you go.

If you roll a 10+, you succeed! You successfully attack and deal your damage, or you avoid an enemy attack, or you trick someone, or you cast a spell - whatever!

If you roll 7-9, partial success. You achieved what you set out to do, mostly, but I as the DM can add a messy complication.

If you roll a 6 or below, you gain an XP, and you fail at what you were trying to do.

Critical successes or failures for rolling double 6s or snake-eyes is also a thing.

3) The DM doesn't roll anything. If I want to do something, I do it, and it's on the players to respond. That being said, it's the DM's role in Dungeon World to be a fan of the players, so it's my job to make the combat and story exciting for you all.

This is where we begin!

You have been enslaved by the evil lich Drazhu and his vicious minions, who have put them to work digging tunnels to expand Drazhu’s underground lair. An enterprising dwarf, now dead, managed to make a detailed sketch of the complex. This is both awesome and crappy. You know exactly where everything is, you know how to get out...in theory. Now you are not only a slave but you are a slave cursed with that terrible thing called hope. In short, life sucks, bad.

Character Creation:

Follow the rules on the SRD. I will only take one of each class. However instead of the bonds listed you will be given new ones later on.

Note that you will start with no gear, but you can select what you had when you were made a slave, maybe it will be somewhere you can find it...maybe not.

For now you can select one of the following

☐ A big stick with some bloody hair stuck to it (yours)
☐ A coil of fraying rope and a chunk of chalk
☐ Some kind of vermin that has befriended you (name it)
☐ A broken holy symbol and a toothache
☐ A dented flute and a bag of human excrement
☐ Some cave mushrooms and a pointy stick

However you will need to answer two of the questions from each of the lists below, your choice as to which two from each list.

List 1
• Until recently you worked for Drazhu, what was your job and why did you end up here?
• What terrible crime did Drazhu commit that made you swear to destroy him?
• What secret were you caught trying to steal from Drazhu, and why did he spare your life?
• Who is Drazhu to you and how will you save him from himself?

List 2
• What permanent mark has the Shipmaster left upon your pale skin?
• What shameful promise have you made with the Tunnel- Keep?
• Why are you unafraid of what lurks in the killing pit?
• What secret do you know about the Whipmaster's private chamber?

Expectation:

I will try to do a post every single day. When we are in combat everyone will have a chance to post, then I will do a long post to explain what happened. Out of combat I will try to respond more often. I expect folks to work together, and help each other with a different system. I expect RP between players, and all in all people to not get bogged down in the details. Remember you are actually creating the world!

I will take up to 8, knowing that some will fade away due to RL or not feeling the system, or my style or whatever! The opening act is not that long, so once it is done we can decide if we want to continue or not.

Dark Archive

Well lets get dis party started! =)

When you say "One of each class" are you limiting our choices to just the basics from the SRD, or can we reach out to other resources? (As a for instance, many find the Priest to be significantly easier to play that the Cleric. Jus' sayin'. =)

As long as you are able to provide a link to the class, its just fine! I suppose there are some classes that are super complicated and overpowered...but we can deal with those as it happens

What I meant was no more than 1 Fighter, or Bard etc. If you were to play a Priest, no one else could be a priest, though someone could be a cleric.

I will keep a running tally of what is claimed.

Hey MiniGM, I'd like to play a Half-Elf paladin character and I found this Racial Move for half-elves. The default Dungeon World ruleset says that only humans can be paladins. Screw that!

Half-Elf Paladin:
When you enter a foreign settlement, tell the GM whether you respect the local deity and the practices of their worshippers. If you do, their temple will take you in and show you hospitality.

What do you think?

works for me.

Paladin has been claimed folks!

also note I added the actual starting equipment above.

Human Wall-walker (Inverse World) Nathan Croft chooses the rope and chalk.

1c: The pits are intersecting the ruins of an ancient prison, Nathan got himself caught to seek out the cell of a legendary thief for clues to an ancient treasure. Drahzu has been promised first pick of whatever Nathan finds there. Both of them are probably planning to betray each other.

2d: Nathan's been telling his fellow escapees that there's a passage out of the pits through the whipmaster's chamber, but the room was really built over the ancient cell of Ezio the Bloodknife. There might be a means to escape there, but it probably just goes deeper.

Pick 2 questions from each list

Also I don't have that splat book, can you send me the class you are wanting to use?[/ooc]

First time hearing about this system, but I'll try my hand at druid. Time to go read the srd.

Do we have any information about this Drazhu, Tunnel-Keep, killing pit and so on? Or are the questions completely freeform?

Wall walker and Druid claimed

1a/2a: Nathan was not pleased to be branded on his way in, particularly not somewhere so visible. The florescent glimmercap ink used to draw a piton under his left eye marks Nathan as a forward scout, spelunking the natural tunnels and marking out places that need to be widened, or cut smooth.

1a: Nathan's skills put him in the forward crew. All part of his plan, really. Nathan got caught on purpose. That's the only way he'd ever have been caught. Though, honestly, things would have been simpler if he had been able to sneak in without being stopped, but he knew going in there wasn't any easy way onto the island. He was probably the first stowaway the ship-master had ever encountered on the Mourning Maiden, being a known slaver ship and all.

I'll write up full answers to the 4 questions later, but for now I just wanted to say that I was formerly Drazhu's envoy to foreign lands, a diplomat for him, until I discovered that he's actually an evil lich. When I discovered his evil deeds and protested (directly to him, which was foolish) I was thrown into the slave pits.

Well that must have been awkward

I am interested in a Star Mage. I have sent you a link. The basic background is that I was his pet until he got bored of me.

Currently we have a Star Mage, Wall Walker, Paladin and Druid

You can go ahead and right up the details, make sure you double check the character creation, answer your 4 questions, and select the gear you actually have, AND what gear you had before you became a slave. Some of that you may find, some of that you may not.

This is Nohwear. I will work on my character a bit at a time, just so you know.

It was supposed to say whipmaster, but I didnt notice the autocorrect, so shipmaster it is!

Questions:
• What terrible crime did Drazhu commit that made you swear to destroy him?
- His magic experiments and resources harvesting raze all the land within his reach.

• What secret were you caught trying to steal from Drazhu, and why did he spare your life?
- Maeris sought to steal his phylactery, but managed to pretend she was here but to stage a slave breakout, so the lich saw it fitting to make her one instead.

• What shameful promise have you made with the Tunnel-Keep?
- She offered herself to the Tunnel-Keep in exchange for for better food and reprieve for those too weak to survive otherwise.

• Why are you unafraid of what lurks in the killing pit?
- The beasts strongly resemble a more mundane creature Maeris is familiar with. She feels she would be able to appease them. It may be possible to escape that way, but she has no idea if the caverns at the bottom of the pit connect to the surface.

I'll go with "Some kind of vermin that has befriended you". Unsure which kind yet. A rat, a bat, or maybe a poisonous spider.

Questions:

Until recently you worked for Drazhu, what was your job and why did you end up here?
-Is was his pet until he got bored with me.
Who is Drazhu to you and how will you save him from himself?
-Drazhu is the one who brought me here, and possibly had a hand in my creation. I will find where he has hidden the last of his humanity and force him to accept it back.
What shameful promise have you made with the Tunnel- Keep?
-I have allowed him to bed me so that he will keep my Star Heart safe.
Why are you unafraid of what lurks in the killing pit?
-They owe me a favor. A big one.

I shall go with: Some Cave Mushrooms and a Pointed Stick.

Whelp we have 4, so once I get questions from our Paladin, and builds from our paladin and druid we can begin

In the meantime I am happy to take up to 4 more folks

For those who are finished, do you want us to do anything at the discussion thread right now?

yes, you can start figuring out your bonds

How about an Artificer named Elena Modrava?

• Until recently you worked for Drazhu, what was your job and why did you end up here?
Elena was chief engineer for Drazhu and supervised the building and design of the tunnels. She was stripped of her job after she was caught spying.

• What secret were you caught trying to steal from Drazhu, and why did he spare your life?
Elena was found trying to find out about the origin of the strange alloy Drazhu constructed his machines from. She was spared because an undead engineer is no use and Drazhu might need her knowledge at some point.

• What permanent mark has the Shipmaster left upon your pale skin?
Looking for Drazhu's secrets cost Elena her left eye in exchange. She was told that 'people who look shouldn't strain their vision.'

• What secret do you know about the Whipmaster's private chamber?
Elena knows where the load bearing beams are under the chamber, since she's the one who drew up the plans.

Rope and chalk, please.

P.S. I love suggesting a gear focused class in a scenario where we don't start with any :) It'll be fun!

And artificer is claimed

Where do I find artificer?

Here, hopefully. Been having issues lately linking to Drive.

Also, that was fast.

thanks, you can make your way to discussion then GP when you are built up

I have to wonder what that second Tunnel-Keep answer will do to their characterization.

How else do you think Nathan keeps getting his hat back?

Nathan and the Tunnel-Keep are kindred spirits, two horny ships passing in the night.

Not quite the direction I was thinking, but it works.

Hello there! =3

Character submission for Atlas2112! Mooshy an' I agreed to start with some hooks. ;)

Question the First: Until recently you worked for Drazhu, what was your job and why did you end up here?

I was Drazhu's chief hitman, killing whomever his fingers pointed to.
I kept careful track of his assignments, until one day he set me up for a major target...and a major fall.

The Second: What terrible crime did Drazhu commit that made you swear to destroy him?

He committed the crime of mistaking me for a pawn to be sacrificed for a greater good.

To ingnite some foreign chaos, I learned that my next job was to be my last--my life given in forfeit as one power blamed another. I would not stand for it.
So I took my evidence to his loyal diplomat, the half-elf paladin with the noble heart. Surely he would know what to do!

Alas, his heart was too pure. Instead of leveraging my hard-gained knowledge with the agents of others, he took it directly to Drazhu, confronting him openly. He offered my name freely, thinking to turn his heart.
Instead we are both here.

OF NOTE: Kara is unaware of what happened after she gave her evidence to the paladin. She fully believes that Drazhu simply learned of her plan before the paladin could put it in to action, and so blames herself for their situation. As such, she has undying loyalty to him, and swears that she'll find a way to get them out of this...somehow.

If she every learned the truth, that she is here because of the lack of a paladin's guile, the results could be...unfortunate.

The Third: Why are you unafraid of what lurks in the killing pit?

So long as my noble friend the paladin is by my side, none can stand against us!

Question the Forth: What secret do you know about the Whipmaster's private chamber?
He has a multitude of weapon-like devices that he likes to be spanked with in the nude. The lock on the cabinet is strong, but the doors that anchor the lock are weak with dry rot.

Starting gear: Some cave mushrooms and a pointy stick

welcome! go ahead and post in discussion and GP if you like.

I'll step out, I think. A bit too arbitrary and light-hearted for my tastes.

I know I asked if I could watch and join later, but I got a little carried away. I mean, a new campaign? No way I wasn't making a character at least. Sora Crescent, awaiting approval. Currently haven't got a specific race determined yet, but most refer to those like her as "Skyfolk" anyway.

Questions:

List 1
• Until recently you worked for Drazhu, what was your job and why did you end up here?
Sora acted as a messenger and carrier. Funnily enough, wings make it rather easy to get about. That said, one day he thought it would be amusing to send her off to a mountainside encampment a great distance away...with her wings bound. That would have been bad enough, but on arrival the instructions she'd delivered were to shackle her limbs and send her back. Needless to say, she wasn't amused herself. Her subsequent tantrum on return caused more damage than expected, and she was sent to the slave pits.
• What terrible crime did Drazhu commit that made you swear to destroy him?
He BOUND her WINGS. You do not do that to any Skyfolk. EVER.

List 2
• What permanent mark has the Shipmaster left upon your pale skin?
A depiction of a caged bird, branded on her right shoulder as but another cruel joke.
• What shameful promise have you made with the Tunnel- Keep?
In exchange for freedom of her wings, she's been providing fresh feathers for the Tunnel-Keep's use without a fight. The feathers of her kind are beyond luxurious and soft, but given just how agonising it for them to have even a single one removed, it's not common to actually have them in any real quantity. As loathsome as it is to submit to this, it's better than having her wings bound.

welcome to the party, ill review, but im sure tis fine. you can go check out the bonds in discussion and make initial rp posts in the gp

Am I late? I'd love to play along.

It's early stages. We haven't hit the cap I don't think, so I doubt there's a problem.

Just put something together. No harm if it turns out you can't join.

put something together

Thinking of an Inverse World Golem made of Fire. Sorry MiniGM, do you have Inverse World yet?

Totally became friends with something that doesn't burn to the touch. Maybe something like a Fire Bat.

• Until recently you worked for Drazhu, what was your job and why did you end up here?
Drazhu tried to create a Golem from the magma, hoping to have the full digging prowess of an unstoppable force of molten Earth. Instead he got only the flame itself. Disgruntled before even putting his new creation to the test, he assigned me to guard duty, figured I'd make life worse for the people here.

• Who is Drazhu to you and how will you save him from himself?
My creator Drazhu is so impatient, but he gave life to me. I couldn't have come out this good if there wasn't any good in him, so my self-proclaimed task is to find a way to turn him good.

• Why are you unafraid of what lurks in the killing pit?
Magma isn't nearly as threatening when you're already made of fire.

• What secret do you know about the Whipmaster's private chamber?
He's got airconditioning in there. It's more terrifying for me in there than to for others to be out here.

Drazhu never did name me, didn't care for long enough, nobody did actually, until Sora came down here.

Drive: Acceptance and Recognition - Make someone acknowledge the effort you've put forth.

I have the classes to look at. Quick question...how will you manage being made of fire...seems like that's hard to manage in the world.

Not saying no I just am not sure how it works

Perhaps it's something close to an elemental in nature? In any case, it's going to be magic. That can generally handwave a lot of questions.

Life won't be easy though, admittedly.

Huh, Inverse World sure is popular for this.

Ah magic hand wave. Works for me

Ahgh! A djinn! Not again! I need to watch what I'm drinking down here.[/Uncharted 3 joke]

Inverse World was already used for 2 other characters, so I figured I'd look there first as well. Thought of playing Drider, figured I had a little too much in common with a wall-walker, chose not to play Drider.

As for being made of fire, absolutely magic. She needs to always be on the ground to burn something up, unless you can find something to burn that can fly.

go ahead and build it up and we will find a time to bring you in. right now two characters took the weekend off so they are still dazed from the quake. We will bring you in in a later room, no problem

Room for one more? Maybe for a Ranger?

Sure

Space for a few more if anyone wants to join

I would like to join. I'll work on the character later today or tomorrow. Wizard seems not to be taken, right?

No Wizards, no. If you want something a bit more free-form though, I'd suggest the Mage, found at the start of the stuff here. Your call if you'd prefer the Vancian casting or something a little more free.

I looked the mage over and I do like the casting better, but is there anything in it that makes it useful in combat other than 1d4 base damage? With a wizard there's at least magic missile, but what can a mage do?
