Shocked and amazed at the terror and awe of the beast they are about to face, Power prances over to the flank, hoping to take advantage of the loud and barbaric vanguard that Zathra is playing.

Off to the side, Rankev takes a moment to wonder about what he had discerned--his _assuredness_ that the beast is, itself, not what it appears to be.

He takes a new green sprig from a nearby ceder tree, crushes it in his fingers and sniffs it. He looks for certain hints that nature will give you about arcane intruders...if you know how to listen.

Can I make a Ritual to discern the true nature of the beast?

Doesn't Ritual require a place of power? We're out in the woods - I get the feeling there isn't one you could call on right now, short of getting something established that'll have consequences now or later. Or both.

Laguna nods to Zathra. "Alright...whoever you are! Didn't catch your name. Address that when there isn't a crazy monster." He takes a look around him. "Quill, Teren, can one of you get yourself into a blind spot? We need someone in position where it won't be able to see an attack coming, and I need to cover the group."

Right, it requires a "Place of Power". Which happens to be wherever I'm standing! =p

And sometimes we "discuss" my "place" of "power" all night long! XD Oh wait, sorry, are we not doing this anymore? I thought Zenfox was getting in on it. =p

There's plenty of places in the forest to take cover, but picking a strategically good one quickly might be problematic.

Who's going to be the hidden attacker? What are you doing?

Laguna, what position are you taking to cover the red-sashes, relative to the direction of the sounds you hear the creature making?

Hey guys, why the radio silence? Have I set things up wrong?

Human Druid 2 | 18/18 hp, 1 armor, d6 damage, 5/9 xp | str +2, Dex +0, Con +0, Int +1, Wis +2, Cha -1

Sorry, I went "I'll wait to see what everyone else does" and kinda forgot from there.

"Laguna, I'll help you cover the group. "

I'd suggest we put Laguna directly between the creature and the group, with Teren around to one side in case it tries to flank.

I got the impression that most of that had already been decided. :/ Zathra is being the vanguard, Tern and Laguna are both going to "cover the group" (I assume that mean's they are behind Zathra) and Power is on the flank, ready to pour in an enfilading fire. Is that everyone?

Sorry for the long delay, Paizo's been down more than it's been up lately. Yeah, I figured that out a couple of days ago, but haven't been able to post due to Paizo's yo-yo antics...altho I read it as Teren and Rankev are both "flanking" - but as you'll see, that's moot.

With everyone in position, and Zathra banging her spear on her shield loudly, suddenly everyone hears a commotion coming from *behind* you!

Turning quickly, everyone sees that the monster is now behind the entire group, right next to the unprotected red-sashes! You hear screams, mixed in with shouts of 'it's behind us!' and 'how did it get there?'.

The terrible, black creature reaches down with its gaping maw and grabs one of the red-sashes in its mouth - you can hear the sickening sounds of his bones breaking even over the din.

Two of its black, whip-like tentacles snake down from its back and encircle two more children, lifting them into the air.

What do you do?

"By the Emerald Sword of Dargor, thou art BEBUKED!" Power yells as he hurls a trio of deadly magic spears at the ebony horror!

Cast Magic Missile. Cast MAGIC MISSILE!!: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 4) + 2 = 11

Damage!: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

I'd normally narrate damage here...but I have no F$%^ing clue what the b%^& this is, so I'll just $%^& the $%^& %^!

Human Druid 2 | 18/18 hp, 1 armor, d6 damage, 5/9 xp | str +2, Dex +0, Con +0, Int +1, Wis +2, Cha -1

My intent was for Teren to be guarding the flank of the group to prevent exactly this - guess I wasn't clear. That said, big group, only two people watching, definitely would've been a gap anyway.

Teren races towards the beast, calling inward and drawing forth the spirit of Roar Shakes the World...

Shapeshifter: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 4) + 2 = 9

Lion form, 2 hold. Immediate goal is improved jumping ability, so I can try and free the two betentacled recruits - don't think that's necessarily a move by itself though.

And launches at one of the tentacles holding a red-sash, trying to free the child from the beast's grasp.

Defend?: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5
Well, nuts.

Elf Barbarian 1

Zathra howls and charges the monster, still trying to attract it's attention so it will come and face her, and it's own mortality.

Defend: 1d6 + 1d8 ⇒ (6) + (6) = 12

Dwarf Psion; 21/21 HP; 2/3 focus; 1 armor; d6 damage; STR+1,DEX+0,CON+1,INT-1,WIS+2,CHA+0, 2 XP

Sarthel tries to blast the thing with her mind :

Telekinetic Strike: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (5, 6) + 2 = 13 Woo-hoo!

Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2 Boo-hoo! (Forceful and Messy)

Seriously, DW, can't we get double damage on a 12+ attack? Or at least a +1 or +2 to damage? :(

Zathra - you have 3 hold on your Defend, but in my mind you are well ahead of the group, so a long way away from the monster - so you won't be able to spend the holds until you get closer.
Also, waiting on Laguna's and Quill's action...

Ok, so I'm going to say that Laguna and Quill were so utterly taken by surprise that they froze for the moment...

Teren, a free tentacle whips in your direction, slapping you hard out of the way, onto the ground. Roll d8 damage.

Rankev, your magical spears hit the hide of the creature, going in deep. It howls in pain, apparently too distracted to teleport away...

What do you all do?

Elf Barbarian 1

Zathra continues to charge towards the monster, screaming like a madwoman.

Going to move to it and attempt to turn it's attention to me. assuming that I can do so, otherwise going to just move closer this round.

If I can reach it (Defend): 1d6 + 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + (2) + 1 = 8

"Interesting," Power muses. "Up to this point I had not been sure 'twas not an illusion or killer-phantasm manifested by a malignant mana-sprite.
Hm. Interesting. Well in that case we can apply MOAR DAKKA!"
he calls, firing at it again!

M&M!: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
The M&Ms! They hurt us!: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5
Oh, let's take "you put yourself in a spot" just to keep it hip and fresh. ;)

Human Druid 2 | 18/18 hp, 1 armor, d6 damage, 5/9 xp | str +2, Dex +0, Con +0, Int +1, Wis +2, Cha -1

The lion hits a tree, hard.

Damage: 1d8 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6 Thoughts on armor while shifted? My gut is that human-form armor is basically an upper limit - shifting into a frail form, armor doesn't apply, but lions would be tough enough that 1-armor carries over.

He turns, roars, and moves to reengage the beast, again focusing his efforts on rescuing the imperiled cubs.

Defend: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6

Unless "try to bite off a tentacle" would be something else, Defy+str perhaps? If it's str, that becomes a 7-9.

Elf Barbarian 1

Am I close enough to use a hold? if so. I will use one to redirect the attack to me, because I'm awesome like that. Assuming that everyone is okay with that and it's possible, the below happens:

As the beast moves to swat Teren, Zathra appears, shoving Teren out of the way of the attack and raising her shield to help deflect the blow. "Here beast, I am your foe! face me and know fear, before you die!"

Male? Erze Dark Knight | Lvl 1 | XP 5 | HP: 25/25 | Armour 2 | Damage 1d8 | STR 1 | DEX -1 (+ Debility'd) | CON 1 | INT 0 | WIS 0 | CHA 2

Sorry! This game kind of dropped off the radar for me. Suspect we lost Quill, though. Nothing from their player for a month.
Oh, and for the record, I probably would've stayed in the middle of the group - because banking on the position of something I've seen teleport to a completely different position seems like an odd decision, and so I was equally close to deal hits/play sacrificial lamb wherever it showed up. He'd definitely have been surprised Rankev hit, though.

Also...why did you re-roll Defend, Zathra? You already had the hold.

Laguna blinks, and shakes his head clear. Then he growls at the beast like an angry wolf - quite literally. "Alright, you've done enough!" Taking his bardiche in both hands, he runs up and takes a brutal swing at the creature.

Hack and Slash: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 2) + 1 = 4
Yay XP?

Elf Barbarian 1

Because I thought I needed to.

In Zathra's defense, I did say she was quite a ways away from the monster when she first rolled her Defense, I can see how she might think she'd need to roll it again once she got closer and it became relevant...

Teren, 1 armor in lion form sounds reasonable. Wouldn't "bite off a tentacle" be a Hack and Slash? In which case, you got a 7. Roll damage!

The black monster, having been hurt by Rankev the most, takes a lumbering step or two towards him, maw open, intending to chomp him in half.

But then, Zathra appears out of nowhere, interposing herself between them, and it picks her up in its mouth instead. Zathra, roll 2d12 and take the largest of the two in damage. You remain in its mouth for the moment.

Rankev, despite being shaken at almost being the creature's dinner, manages to throw another round of magical spears at the creature, but they do far less damage this time.

What happens next depends on Teren's damage. Please hold...

Human Druid 2 | 18/18 hp, 1 armor, d6 damage, 5/9 xp | str +2, Dex +0, Con +0, Int +1, Wis +2, Cha -1

Could argue either way. Sadly, a H&S 7-9 means the beastie gets to make a move against me also.

Damage to the beastie: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Elf Barbarian 1

1d12 ⇒ 11d12 ⇒ 4 Nice, 3 damage. How long do my holds last? until I do something besides defend, or can I attack it?

Zathra, once you attack it you drop your Defend holds. Actually, upon re-reading Defend, you should have declared *who* you were defending when you rolled, but I'll ignore that this time...I'm still learning the system too. ;)

Teren leaps into the air and bites one of the tentacles holding a child, and tears it in two! Growling in pain, the beast arches its back and whips another tentacle at Teren, slapping him hard into the ground again.
Teren, take d8 damage.

Zathra's in the mouth of the beast, and once it gathers its senses, it's likely to teleport away - what do you all do?

Male? Erze Dark Knight | Lvl 1 | XP 5 | HP: 25/25 | Armour 2 | Damage 1d8 | STR 1 | DEX -1 (+ Debility'd) | CON 1 | INT 0 | WIS 0 | CHA 2

...am I invisible or something?
Also, I am absolutely certain that attacking something does NOT cost you your defend hold. I find the idea that you can't fight back against the thing you're defending against crazy.
Of course, if you abandon the person you're defending, or are rendered unable to assist them (say, if you're trapped or rendered immobile, or just sent flying into the next country) then it's pretty safe to say they're not standing in defence anymore, and as such lose hold.

Anyway. I tried to hit in the face. I flubbed the roll. Whatcha gonna do with that?

Mmmrmph. I can see it either way. Mind you, the SRD says "When you’re no longer nearby or you stop devoting your attention to incoming attacks then you lose any hold you might have had." That does seem to imply that do lose the hold once you attack. Actually, if you didn't lose hold, then the first thing I'd do in a fight is Defend, and then just spend the Hold in bits as I was attacked. ^_^

"Nay! Nay! A thousand times nay! You shall fall this day and we will be troubled by you no more! You shall not take our ally and you shall not leave this place to harry us again! By the EMPEROR OF MAN, DIE MUTANT!"

M&M!: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 5) + 2 = 11

Human Druid 2 | 18/18 hp, 1 armor, d6 damage, 5/9 xp | str +2, Dex +0, Con +0, Int +1, Wis +2, Cha -1

Tentacles hurt: 1d8 ⇒ 6 -1 for armor; at 7/18.

The beast still holds one cub. The lion takes a few steps, limping at first, before pouncing again, trying to free the other red-sash.

H&S: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 3) + 1 = 9
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Laguna - oops, sorry! I totally forgot about you - my bad!
In addition to what Rankev quoted from the SRD, it also says "Defending yourself is certainly an option. It amounts to giving up on making attacks and just trying to keep yourself safe." So I'm going to stand by my call that making an attack loses you your Defend holds.
Now as for you...

As Laguna's attack misses, a tentacle whips around and grabs his bardiche, and yanks on it!

Laguna, you can attempt to yank it out of the tentacle (DD/Str), or let go of it and possibly lose it. What do you do?

I know DW doesn't have "rounds", but I'm going to wait for Laguna and Zathra to post their next actions before summarizing again.

Elf Barbarian 1

Zathra switches from Defense to Offense at the drop of a silver piece, lashing out at the creature with her spear, howling laughter as she does.

Hack and Slash (+str): 1d8 + 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + (4) + 2 = 14
Damage Roll: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Um, Laguna, have you gone invisible or something? :)

I think Laguna's taking a break for a while, so I'm 'botting him out of the action for a little bit...

Rankev's missile's strike true, and the beast growls in pain, altho not as loud as before.

Teren bites thru another tentacle, and the child drops to the ground. Finding itself out of free tentacles, the beast arches its back, bumping into Teren and throwing him away from itself, and he lands on the ground, but not as hard as before, when the tentacles threw him down. Teren, take d4 damage.

Laguna thinks that he should be stronger than a mere whip of a tentacle, and so chooses to hold on to his bardiche. But the tentacle proves stronger than he thought, and he's is picked up and flung into a nearby tree headfirst! He collapses to the ground, unconscious.

While Zathra's attack didn't do much damage, since she is in its mouth, she has a soft spot available to aim at - it's nose! Sticking her spear up a nostril and twisting, this time the beast howls, dropping Zathra to the ground.

Seeing that picking up a meal "to go" isn't going to be as easy at it thought it was going to be, the beast roars in anger, and vanishes.

What do you do?

I concur that IZ might be have a bit of a break.

"Oh CONFOUND!" the mage declares as the beast -again- leaves glorious combat and escapes the end it so richly deserves. "Again it has left glorious combat and escaped the end it so richly deserved! By the Seven Spheres I swear that someday I shall injuncture that! You hear me? I shall injuctture that!"

Nodding in a way that says all that he has to say, Rankev looks at the others. "Well, have we aught else to do or shall we continue to follow the knight to the ruins?"

Falling damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2 Down to 5.

As he hits the ground, Teren returns to his human form. He gets up slowly, and calls out for Varus to tend to the two red sashes.

He moves (somewhat slowly - those blows definitely hurt!) and inspects first the place where the beast appeared, then the spots it disappeared from, calling on the spirits he carried with him to see what they could tell him about this monster.

Discern Realities: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1) + 2 = 4

Elf Barbarian 1

As it teleports away, Zathra begins laughing at it.

"Run beast. You'll only die tired! I have bloodied you and will track you to the ends of hell should I need to."

Turning to the group, Zathra will put her spear up on her shoulders and say "Hello, my name is Zathra, also called the Bonebreaker." To Teren, she will add "Are these the refugees you mentioned?"

LifeCleric Varus comes over and tries to heal Teren's wounds :

Teren shoos the healers away. "I'll live, go check on those the beast grabbed!"

Zathra gets an affirmative nod in reply to his question.

No wonder Teren bombed the DR roll, all these people pestering him! ;-) All that healing brings Teren up to 15/18.

Elf Barbarian 1

"I can see why you need my help. I don't know how they survived to adulthood, bickering like that."

you're pretty sure Zathra is referring to the other PCs when she mentioned refugees, not just the refugees themselves.

"You fight well, Teren, even if you deny yourself the pleasure of the kill by hiding inside a different creature. You should relish the feel of your feet bouncing hard on the ground as you run towards your prey, the feel of your weapon in your hand and the wind in your hair, knowing that the next few moments mean death for someone."

The two children grabbed by the tentacles only have bumps and bruises, having fallen only a few feet. The child the monster first bit however, is...well, let's just say his middle half is missing. Many of the younger children are crying, and the older ones are putting on brave faces, trying not to throw up.

Human Druid 2 | 18/18 hp, 1 armor, d6 damage, 5/9 xp | str +2, Dex +0, Con +0, Int +1, Wis +2, Cha -1

Any visible results from my failed DR?
Bonus question: are the severed tentacles still on the ground?

Teren gives Zathra a cool stare. "I don't think you understand. Take the feelings you describe, but replace your feet with legs literally born to close a distance, your made weapon with claws and fangs that are for the hunt, and a mind that stalks and strikes without needing to form thoughts about it." As he speaks, Teren's eyes begin to unfocus, and faint suggestions of the lion's face flickers over his features; then his focus snaps back. "The tiergeist can hardly be described as denying pleasure."

Elf Barbarian 1

"You're right, I don't understand. Why would you want to be anything but yourself?"

"Cease thy prattling like old maids around a common knitting circle," Rankev chastises the two as he wobbles back to the group at large. "The best way, of course, is to break the laws of physics and matter and simply cause thy foe discomfit by the power of writhing sigils. Anything else is simply eating with your hands."

Power heads over with LifeCleric Varus to try and shush the children as best they can, using bright lights and literal parlor tricks when needed.

"Oh, come along then, unless you wish to be snapped in half yourself. Our chances of being eaten alive or mauled beyond recognition drop considerably once we've gotten to where we are going to."

No one ever accused Rankev of having to soft a bedside manner.

Teren - I see no description of negative results on a failed DR (like "the GM lies to you", so no. And yes, two tentacles you bit off are still on the ground, writhing slightly.

Elf Barbarian 1

"What's wrong with eating with your hands? Are your hands not good enough for you, you poncy wizard?"

Teren, for all the damage that you and your comrades inflicted on this monster, there's very little blood on the ground where it stood. Perhaps it recovers from wounds quicker than normal...

Human Druid 2 | 18/18 hp, 1 armor, d6 damage, 5/9 xp | str +2, Dex +0, Con +0, Int +1, Wis +2, Cha -1

Teren had to pause before answering Zathra's question; it's not one most Chromians would even think to ask. "Because there's no better way to understand something than to become it, and understanding the things around us makes everything easier."

Rankev gets an eye roll in response. "Yes, yes, you prefer to wiggle your fingers first and ask questions later." He hefts one of the creature's severed tentacles and tosses it towards the wizard. "A little something for you to study." The other tentacle gets tied in a loop, then tied to Teren's pack.

I'm ready to continue the trek to our ruin whenever y'all are.
