With the three women finally freed from their own misfortunate fate, Carlaya and Renee's realization of their grim situation is becoming more real.
Charis and Ed Earl lay in ashes, and Rags has bled out. The source of this...travesty, must be exterminated.
As the two collect their minds, an echoing voice comes to their minds.
It is that of green, but free of speech.
"Hear me, please, as i cannot speak for long. There might be a way to revive your friends. Their souls are with us, all of us are trapped, we cannot pass.
Take our pendants, and place them upon the bodies of your friends. If your prayers are strong enough to have the Lady Luck hear them, she might interfere with this. The natural order is being violated."
You did drag Grog's body all the way here after all.
Renee le Rapide |
"Bodies? I hope the the ashes will do as well. Carlaya, please bring the remains of monsieur Grog over here."
Renee gathers the pendants from the deceased cultists, and makes sure there are no scent of evil in them. Detect alignment/evil He places one pendant around Grog's neck, and the other two over the ashes of Charis and Ed Earl.
Then, all he can do is kneel down, and pray for Desna to guide the souls back.
Umm, can a pendant be reused for Rags? :P
Xeram |
Noting evil comes from their dead bodies.
I'm sorry to say, but 1 soul's revival per pendant.
Carlaya, despite not being a follower, is being social with Renee, and says her modest prayer for their friends' safe return.
---------------------
Grog's complexion turns back to normal, as far as a half-drunken dwarf is concerned. He opens his eyes with a deep breath and coughing.
The ashes of Ed Earl and Charis start glowing. In a divine display, bright light assumes their bodies' shapes.
When the light fades, they are whole again, likewise waking up like Grog did.
You have 1 negative level, atm.
The Maiden of Jewels |
The Maiden sits up. "Did... they pass on?" She coughs and looks at the shattered amulet lying on her chest. "They sacrificed themselves...for us. They will never know their eternal rest until we destroy this place."
Is my stat damage gone, or do I have 1 negative level on top of that?
Carlaya |
Without a word, Carlaya pulls out a glass bottle and pokes Rags in the side. Blue blood streams into the vial, which she promptly caps once filled.
"The essence of Rags. Surely there must be some way to bring him back with this..." She stows it in her pocket, then gets up. I never really was that attached to him anyway...
"Welcome back, Charis and Grog. Those pendants were literally life savers."
Old Grog |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Grog woke up with a start, his eyes where wild, his hair, standing on end and stiff. He stank of gin and peered about, and grunted "WADDA I DRINK LAST NIGHT-HIC? TASTES DISGUSTING! OOF ME LIVER NAE LIKES DIS"! His hand goes to his side where he's apparently extremely tender.
Renee le Rapide |
"Welcome back, monsiuer dwarf! This time, it was not a drink that took you down, however. How much do you remember?" Renee says, and helps Old Grog back to his feet.
"And you too, mademoiselle Charis. Desna be praised, for a moment it looked that you were ... gone."
Now many of the companions are together again, so the quest has not failed. But the last fight was rough, and Renee is not sure how much good he is able to do before resting. In these somber thoughts, the half-orc collects arrows from the floor, saving any undamaged ones.
How everyone else, any damage that needs healing? Renee is out of bane-rounds, not too many spells left either.
The Maiden of Jewels |
Charis prays next to Rags' body. "They were in a lot of pain. They didn't want to fight us, but the corruption compelled them. It wouldn't let them age. It would halt their injuries. Their only escape was defeat in battle."
"I am glad to be back. I wish Rags were still with us. We'll have to rest up for the night, I'm guessing."
Resurrection means my spells are back, but we should make sure we're in top condition before venturing onward. We were almost at full strength for this fight and it nearly wiped us out.
Xeram |
Any spells you still had left, yes.
And you may want to rest elsewhere... *hint hint*.
As you are about to head off, or preparing to rest in this very room, a strange circular rune appears on the wall.
It starts spinning, creating some sort of portal......through which a figure is cast out of....
Ok mystery team member, your place on the stage is lit. ;)
Tae |
A tiny form tumbles out of the swirling energy, growing in size until it is roughly half the size of a man. Slight of build, wearing light, loose clothing of black and gold, matching his wild shock of hair. He lands on his a$$ a few feet from the portal.
"I meant to do that." he says definitively as he stands up, brushing himself off and straightening his rumpled clothes. "so where am I? And who are you? Am I here to rescue you?"
The Maiden of Jewels |
"I think you've been dragged into a terrible fate." The Maiden eyes him suspiciously. "We need to destroy this cult before they drive even more people insane."
She pauses for a moment. "I'm called the Maiden of Jewels. Or Charis, whatever you want to call me."
Carlaya |
Carlaya bursts into laughter as the stranger appears through the portal. "Oh, wow, and what do we have here? Are you Rags in human form?" She looks Tae up and down. "It's unfortunate fate has brought you here. Charis and Ed Earl over there were dead not five minutes ago. And that giant snake..." she kicks Rags' corpse "Rags, my ahem faithful... companion is still dead."
Tae |
"Rags? That's a name?" he looks at the others, then at the snake(?)..." um.. no, I am not a giant snake in any form whatsoever... I... am Traxelreaux Tivaard Shadowbranch... but you may call me 'Tae'. And skip the short jokes, I've heard them all before. So some of you are or were dead? I guess I really am here to save you. I was sorta kinda kidding about that... or not. Mind if I ask you how you found yourself in such lethal circumstances?"' He waggles his fingers and utters an incomprehensible word softly...

Xeram |
Ed Earl scratches his chin.
"Well, this certainly is an awkward situation. Dying, coming back to life, then a halfling popping from a portal."
He crosses his arms, relaying the group's tale to Tae.
"In short, an oracle gathered us in the city Kharum. Things have turned chaotic there, and she felt imminent doom befalling the world.
We went into a ruined tower, found mutating soldiers, monsters and traps coming here.
Sadly, whomever is behind this, is using innocents as test subjects to slow us down- or to kill us. They did in Charis and myself shortly before you arrived."
"Gods be praised the strong prayers were heard, or we'd not be here."
Old Grog |
Grog bows before stumbling and muttering, "How'd I git ere? Hic! I nae remember but dem evil folks plan ta poison all drink in da town!!! Evil shall nae stand hic! While I draw breath."
Tae |
"And where exactly is 'here'?" he takes a long look around at the surroundings. "oh my, poisoning all the drink... now that WOULD be a tragedy! Why, do they want everyone dead, or is it one of those poisons that just makes folk compliant?"
Xeram |
Ed Earl:
"-Here-, is somewhere underground, best we can bet.
We don't know their motives, except from what the oracle told us, imminent doom befalling the world."
While talking, the team takes Tae to the room with the levers, where they can rest.
Changing shifts, the rest is uneventful.

The appearance of the halfling might have a surprise in some other place, but of all strange things happening recently, a teleporting new ally is hardly to strangest. But it is a very welcome sight, perhaps Desna is taking care of them, when the time is darkest.
"Bienvenue, Monsieur Tae!" Renee greets the halfling warmly. "Monsieur Dwarf is slightly incorrect in his description of the situation. It the dreams that are being poisoned. But such small confusion is understandable, everything considered."
Tae |
"Dreams are being poisoned? That's not good... We are, in a sense, a product of our dreams. Sounds like you folks are in the need of a bit of rest... Will there be food?" HIs eyes light up excitedly at the prospect of something good to eat.
