Fazgyn's eyes narrow even further, "Well, our tasks do seem to align..." He sounds unsure, but he eventually agrees with his fellow Sewer Dragons, "But if you are lying to us, after Skyrahk has destroyed you, I'll feed what's left of you to Hats!"

After repeated assurances of being forthright, you make the trip. Sadly, Hats will have nothing to do with stepping through that thing.

Y’zilix continues to send you thoughts as you travel, “The umbral wyrmling is like most children of his species, indolent and insufferable. As a dragon, he wishes to be fawned over, but despises his lesser role in the great machine of Shadow Absalom. As for his dwelling, the Onyx Alliance provided for him a great spire to roost upon—a spire built on a hive of my people, destroyed by the alliance during one of their many expansions in the city.”

You guide seems to be rather absent minded at times and during the trip there are plenty of sights to see. Perhaps a return trip someday...

A soaring edifice of darkened violet stone looms in the city’s skyline, some four hundred feet above. Jet-black dirt extends a hundred feet around the tower in a sizable mound that obscures the spire’s base. Engraved in the hills around the tower are strange symbols, each the size of a standing human. There are no visible entrances to the tower, though a single tunnel descends into the hill surrounding the spire.

Y’zilix leads you to a tunnel opening on the far side.

As you walk...

DC 16 Knowledge (arcana):

The magical etchings correspond to the magical runes commonly found on d’ziriak hives. Normally these symbols would glow with luminous energies, indicating ownership of the region to a given hive, but the glowing light went out at some point.

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

The underground tunnel opens up into what was once a vast circular chamber. Portions of the northwest and southeastern sections of the room have collapsed. Three pillars rise up twenty feet to a stone ceiling above, each of their sides covered in black marble polished to a reflective sheen. A perfectly spherical mirror floats in the air at the northern end of the space, roughly two feet in diameter. An audible hum emanates from the orb and echoes throughout the room.

Y’zilix explains that the floating orb that hovers 2 feet off the ground in the northern edge of the chamber is a "mirror gate." We used to have many in my hive, but now only two remain. Touching the orb causes the mirror reflection of the current chamber to frost over, and over the course of the next minute the reflection shifts into that of the matching mirror gate. Once this transformation is complete, a creature that touches the orb travels to the matching orb at the tower’s apex.

In case the implication isn't clear, Y’zilix clarifies This gate leads to Shadrixis's lair. Directly. Do not touch until you are good and ready.

Fazgyn pulls out both of his swords, applies his last vial of scorpion venom to his main sword, and oil of darkness to his other one, "I'm ready when you are, Sewer Dragons..." He says, to the rest of the group before turning back to stare at the orb.

"Huh...so the Onyx Alliance took this land from your people," Engashez remarks, noting that the symbols on the hills around the tower should be glowing but aren't. "So with Shadrixis gone then you would have this place as your own again. I can see why you want our help..."

Aware that they're likely about to warp directly into a battle with the whelpling true trueblood, the little blue kobold digs around in her pack for a moment and pulls out a couple of items. "Sewer Dragons must prepare properly for meeting," she grins toothily as she first bops Pethun, Fazgyn, and Athrax with a small wand. Then, she reads from a scroll and the entire party feels an increased sense of tempo about their movements.

"Hokay. Engashez ready!"
_______

Engashez will hit Pethun, Fazgyn, and Athrax with Heroism from the wand she carries and then use her scroll of Haste on the party.

With spells cast and hearts set, the Sewer Dragons of Absalom touch the mirror gate...

Crisp air swirls around the unguarded edges of the spire’s apex. Polished mirrored marble covers the circular floor, spreading out in a forty-foot radius. A pile of gleaming copper coins with a dragon-shaped indent rests on the northern end of the platform. Beyond the edges of the platform, the dim lights of the city below are visible, accented by multi-colored glyphs adorning the sides of what appear to be massive termite hives in the distance. A floating mirror-like sphere rests in the southern edge of the platform, while a larger sphere floats in the center. The central sphere lacks the mirror-consistency of the gate and instead swallows the already dim light of the region like a black hole.

Clutching a scale in one claw, Shadrixis moves warily around the perimeter of the platform, looking for foes who might fly to the top.

He turns to see you, and seems shocked. For the briefest moment he's nonplussed. If you're going to talk, you've got a split second. If you're going to fight, there will be no surprise....

We're not in initiative, but I'm aware that there are some round/level buffs. There's a tiny sliver of opportunity here. Your call. I'm just as happy fighting :-)

Fazgyn grip on his blades tightens nervously at the sight of the true blood, Is this really happening... Are we really going to attack a true dragon? Too awed to say a word, and feeling more like he should bowing before the wyrmling instead of attacking it, the quivering kobold just waits to see what happens...

I've got nothing to say, but I don't want to start a fight if others want to give peace a chance. :)

If we talk, we risk losing the buffs and might still end up having to fight...and since the GM says we only have a tiny sliver of opportunity, I guess I'll start the fight...

Pethtun sees not so much a true dragon as much as an opportunity for glory and to prove her mettle as the tribe's best fighter...

She chunks her spear at the wyrmling, yelling, "We are the true dragons of Absalom!"

Spear: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 2 = 29

This sleek, dark dragon moves with a disturbing, serpentine grace, its eyes glowing as if lit from within by crimson embers! The dragon swoops over and opens its maw to release a cone of horrendous negative energy!

All of you take DMG: 2d8 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6 negative energy damage. DC 14 REF for half.

Pethjun hurls a spear with shocking force directly at the dragon! You only rolled d5s, DMG: 3d6 + 12 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) + 12 = 23 The spear instantly causes a massive spray of blood!

Fazgyn acts quickly, suddenly realising the dragon is actually small and not just far away, this should be easy after all! He thinks to himself as he speeds around the central sphere with unnatural speed, appearing behind the wyrmling in a flash. Feeling particularly heroic, and with the world seeming to move in slow motion, Fazgyn picks a particularly soft looking spot on the Shadrixis' back and rams his sword towards it.

Atk. +1 Shortsword; Flank, Heroism, Haste: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 15

Now I know why people rave about haste and heroism, thanks Engashez! If the hit is successful, the following applies...

Poison:

~Proud and so glorious standing before of us
Our swords will shine bright in the sky
When united we come to the land of the sun
With the heart of a dragon we ride

We are flying on wings in winter sky with fire burning deep inside
We are warriors of endless time forever and on
On wings of steel an ancient flight we see the powers that unite
The gods will now send us a sign of battle once more

Through the valley we ride full of glory we soar
Where the fights will be raging for now and for more
When united we come and divided they fall
Tonight you will witness it all~

Before leaving you find a rather surprising amount of treasure. Coin and item are nearly too much to carry! Surely you'll be extra EXTRA famous now!

You conclude that if you take the scale of Argrinyxia with you through the portal, it should destabilize it enough to "break" for good! Liking this plan, you execute it.

----------------

When you emerge from the sewer portal, a great gathering of Sewer Dragons led by chief Yiddlepode celebrates your triumphant return. A contingent of Pathfinders led by Drandle Dreng stands to the side, having just prepared to enter the breach themselves. Hats is also present, enthusiastically clapping his tentacles, knocking a beaten derby against a tricorne hat in the process. The assembled group celebrates as the portal closes. Yiddlepode personally congratulates you on a job well done, followed by a brief thanks from Drandle Dreng, who is eager to debrief you and hear tales of exploits in the Shadow Plane. He even goes so far as to offer you commissions and future missions if you're so inclined!

------------------

Congratulations "Pathfinders!" You've completed the True Dragons of Absalom! This would not have been my first choice as a "teaching" scenario as it doesn't include a lot of the normal things a GM encounters. Still, I hope I gave sum insight into my methods. My "door" is ALWAYS open. You can always drop me a line asking for help or advice, and you're all obviously welcomed at my tables any time. I'll report the game ASAP, and get chronicles out shortly after. I appreciate the opportunity to run my 249th table (and 18th PFS special.)

You better be on your best behavior tonight. And now, let's go feast! We found enought teasure to feed the clan for months!"

Thanks for running, I had a blast! :)

”Fazgyn”| Male LE Small Kobold Unchained Rogue 4 | HP 29/29 | AC 20, T 15, FF 16 | CMD 15 | F +2 R +8 W +1 | Init +5 | Perc +9, Darkvision, Trapfinding | Speed 30ft | Active Conditions: Light sensitivity, Haste, Heroism.

Fazgyn puffs out his chest proudly when Skyrahk tells Denture Cabbage of his heroic exploits, "I'd be glad to tell you all about it if you heed Skyrahk's warning!" He narrows his eyes and makes an 'I'm watching you' gesture with his fingers. Despite being a loner, Fazgyn really starts to enjoy the heroes welcome and spends a good while regaling kobolds with the tale of how he slayed Shadrixis.
