Report for duty.

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

Two weeks ago you answered a summons to Ambros Valsin's office. With him was Osprey, his features shadowed by the long cowl of his heavy leather cloak, his unmistakable voice a sullen whisper of both mystery and urgency.

“A grim shadow creeps over Absalom, one that threatens all
of us. We know not its source or even its purpose, and need
answers to secrets only known to the dead. Your task is one of
great importance and urgency. You must retrieve the bones
of the ancient mystic Amao from his cairn and bring them to
me so our seers can contact his spirit. We need to contact him
before these dark forces track his spirit down in the worlds
beyond and devour him. Take extra care on this mission, for
the Aspis Consortium also dearly desires these bones and
their secrets. Amao’s bones rest in a cairn atop a mountain.
Go to Cania’s Drop, a small waystation high in the Fog Peaks
along the border of Southern Galt. There you will meet with
an ex-Pathfinder named Rysam Aklon who will provide you
with equipment and directions to Amao’s cairn. You shall hear
from me again once you complete your mission, but for now
may the gods speed you on your way.”

Now, here in the foothills of a wintry southern Galt, bitter winds blister skin and numbness settles in to exposed extremities. While Absalom isn’t known for its sunshine, at least its foggy shores are more favorable than the bonebrittling cold of the Fog Peaks. Before you lies your destination, a mountain waystation run by exiles and recluses.

I knew we should've taken that follow-up assignment in Qadira, a halfling saddled astride a decidedly-unhappy large bird mutters under his breath. Instead we're gallivanting about the countryside, in worse weather than we ever saw in Lastwall. Ugh.

This is not the Orryn Quattlebaum you're used to; Orryn is typically much more upbeat, though still very much the consummate soldier.

The slab-faced Tien man in the corner remained impassive. It was all one to him where he went in service to the Society because it was all one, Absalom and Galt and Quain. All the same place, which was only a conceit in the human mind.

Nor did he concern himself with the Avistani aversion to disturbing the dead. Death, like life, was only a shadow on the wall of a dimly-lit cave. What did hold his interest was a single syllable uttered by the mysterious man in the Venture-Captain's office.

"Why is Rysam Aklon an "ex" Pathfinder?" he asked in his heavily-accented Taldane. "Was the choice his or the Society's?"

Tessara knows the answers to Li Shuo's questions. He left of his own accord after getting fed up with the life and the Decemvirate. Still, he made some good friends, and still owes a few favors. Rumor has it, Osprey is one person to whom he owes many favors.

Tessara also confirms that the mountain you're traveling too has a history of claiming the lives of unprepared travelers. She confirms that the air is thin, and the dangers have teeth both literal and figurative.

Tess:

You recall that his exit from the society was on account of him thinking that a choice he made once was tantamount to "murder." His exile is his self imposed penance.

The Fog Peaks climb thousands of feet into the icy skies of eastern Golarion. In the harsh mountain environment rests an isolated waystation called Cania’s Drop. About a mile above sea level, individuals non-acclimated to high altitudes have a rough time. Cania’s Drop is one of several dozen waystations erected in the Fog Peaks highlands, a wild expanse of rock and glaciers that creates a craggy border between southern Galt and northern Taldor. Situated to provide aid to travelers and keep watch over the surrounding lands, these stations are manned by outcasts, exiles, former criminals, and others who simply seek isolation or penance. Some willfully volunteer for the position, but for others it serves as a punishment.

Your journey is a perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow Pathfinders And feel free to do introductions. You eventually find a small cabin at the waystation, just before sunset, after spotting a wisp of chimney smoke. Outside the cabin are rows of sleeping sled dogs, curled up together in the deep snow. The few strangers out in the cold eye you with a mixture of nervousness and naked fear. As you approach the cabin, you are immediately approached by a burly man with a shock of wild curly black hair, with strong, rough features that jut through his scraggly, unshorn beard. With ebon eyes gleaming beneath a low-sloped brow, and a demeanor burning bitter as the highland winds, he introduces himself as Rysam Aklon.

"Ye are clearly the ones I'm expecting. As a former Pathfinder, I still owe a few favors to the Society and... Osprey in particular. I ain't too pleased about dealing with you, especially since I'm probably just sending you to your deaths in this layer of Hell. Still, clearing my ledger is on my short list of goals before I die."

Rysam tells you that you can reach the cairn by traveling a snaking trail the ancients called Qi-Oamatok Pass, which loosely translates to the "Winding Serpent". Locals simply refer to it as the Dragon.

Then, almost as an afterthought, "The Dragon bisects wild lands sacred to clans of primitive beastmen that roam the high snowy peaks. I suggests you spend the night, and leave at first light if you hope to reach the cairn alive. The society sprung for some resources. I've got 1 dogsled and 6 trained dogs for each pair of you. You'll each get two days of rations. I'd give ye more, but I can't spare the extras. Here's a map of the Dragon. Finally I've got some cold weather gear and a pick for each of you. That should cover you."

Tess already has cold weather outfits, so she will pass on the clothing. However, she will take the pick and any tools that were given to her, including the extra rations. "Anyone have any experience operating a dogsled? That's outside my ares of expertise, I think."

Like the armor he wears, his skin has a slightly silver sheen to it, betraying the fact that he is not quit human. At his side is a bastard sword, the weapon of his faith, and wrapped around his hand is the holy symbol of the Empyreal Lord Ragathiel, the hell spawn that ascended to righteousness and now leads the armies of heaven as a celestial being.

Wasn't sure if there was some confusion or if that's his character, but the response didn't seem to go with the question. I was trying to ask why the Mountain was called the Dragon, not if it was a dragon, maybe. :P

"Relax, my friend. We are not from here. I was wondering how it got it's name, not knowing if there was perhaps an interesting story involved, and I figured you might know the truth of it more than some of the other locals that might be more interested in selling, say authentic "Dragon Stones" taken from a secret cave at the top to outsiders. And it does seem that many of us have brought our own supplies, so there is no need to risk yours, my friend. I imagine that that would also mean a lot less paperwork on your end, yes."

In the interest of keeping the action going I'll replace one sled with a large sled that holds three of you. Orryn can ride his mount instead. If you want to switch out, that's fin, but let me know. The second sled can function as the aforementioned wagon for the remains.

The ride up is exhausting. The thin air does a number on those who are not accustomed to it. While you've only traveled a whopping 8 miles, it feels like it's been days. Some of you handle the altitude better than others...

Sorry Orryn!

The altitude really gets to Tessara and St. Germaine. You're both Fatigued from the trip.

Near the top of the slope, a broad plateau wraps around the mountain. Near the middle of the plateau rises a squat, 30-foot-square stone rostrum, upon which stand four columns of dark gray stone. One of the columns is broken and lies half-buried in the nearby drifts of snow. In the center of the rostrum rests a five-foot-tall beehive-shaped nest built of ice and cairn stones seemingly frozen around a clutch of eight massive bluish-gray speckled eggs, each the size of a brandy cask. You're now deep in the clouds, deep enough that it affects your visibility. You can see just fine for 60' but 61'-100' is concealment. Beyond that is opaque.

Place yourselves near the place where you leave your sled.

Time for my table top Runelords game. I'll be back in the morning!

Orryn looks about, then volunteers to scout about aboard Stellah for a bit to see what can be seen. He'll stay at about 45-50' above ground level as he checks things out.

Take 10 on Perception for 20 with low-light vision.

DMS tells me that you folks are 1 short of a legal table, and that it's not too late for another player to join. Care for a 6th lvl gunslinger skilled in trail craft?

Assuming "yes," DMS is there any way Riegel can help with the Fort saves, esp since he's experienced this exact problem before? Survival check for a save bonus perhaps (like Heal's +4 vs poison of things like wyverns!)?

oh and my profile will be updated before 10pm eastern

Welcome to the party, Riegel!

Welcome. I think most of us just got hit with Fatigue from Altitude, which kind of sucks. :(

As a quick update of what's going on, we where sent to climb to the top of a mountain range called the Dragon to retrieve the bones of an ancient sage. Our enemies are trying to do the same thing, so it's a bit of a race against time. We just really began to move out, (this is basically the next morning), and we have just arrived somewhere.

Sadly, you can't help. In fact, you need to start with a DC 19 FORT save.

Character updated. FYI I purchased some ammo and a Belt of Dex +2 for a nice even +10 damage yo. If you're keeping track of Init, S, mine is +6 if I have grit (which I almost always do)

Thanks for the welcomes. Ger, thanks for the synopsis--I did read the whole thread so far, so I'm up to speed. :-)

Before the first day is over, you find you are being followed by a tall, lean, and ugly half-orc who apparently had no problems following your trail. Before you become too alarmed, you clearly see his Wayfinder around his neck, and he's got three medals prominently displayed on his chest: two Mendevian Commendations, and a Silver Crusade pin. He's in weather-worn gear (breastplate, buckler, longsword on his back) that isn't in particularly great condition--with the exception of his pistol, low on his right hip. It's practically gleaming, even if the grip and holster have obviously seen use--were it not for this bit of wear, one might describe it as "pristine." His right hand is never far from it.

As he approaches, he stands straight, and raises his right hand in salute.

Hile, Pathfinders! Long days and pleasant nights! I bumped into Rysam, and he told me of your little trip. Thought I might lend a hand in finding these remains and bringin' 'em back to the Decemvirate.

He stops, and huffs out a few breaths. Whew! This is brutal country, say true! I been up this high before, and it ain't pleasant, I tell ye. Wish my trailcraft could help...

Fort Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 <--dangit!! crappy way to start an adventure...

He can't seem to catch his breath. He's beginning to hate mountains.

I think 3 out of 4 off us got hit, and it's pretty much the start of it for all of us. :(

A little bit weary of this new individual, as it could be the Aspis Consortium (is that right?) also here on the same task., "Hold it right there, "friend". If your one of us, who, specifically, sent you?"

Ambros Valsin & Osprey

"Have any, . . . identification?"

Wayfinders are very, very difficult to come by outside the Society, though not impossible. Your Mendev Commendation medals should do it, too, or talk about the Silver Crusade.
