Thiera sighs.

"Whoever it was that decided elves don't sleep needs should try staying up late reading these Pathfinder journals."

Thiera misses her lab and her library. Maybe she'll be able to spend a bit of time there before her next adventure.

I think I need to level her up, but we can go ahead whenever. I won't be able to get to it for a few days unless I try hard to avoid other work.

A human man in his middle years approaches the group, wearing a well cared-for breastplate under a white and gold cloak, with a functional looking scimitar at his side that all have the faint glow of enchantment. The angelic holy symbol worn around his neck and worked into the breastplate mark him as a cleric of Sarenrae.

"Greetings, fellow Pathfinders. I am Hagnar Grimstone, and my orders are to accompany you for this mission." As he speaks he looks at each of you; not a superficial glance so often encountered in city dwellers, but the almost soul-searching look into your eyes experienced only with close friends. He pays particular attention to the paladin, recognizing a kindred spirit.

Discussing the forthcoming mission over a light breakfast of pastries and fruit is a welcome change of routine from Venture Captain Drandle Dreng’s usual midnight requests.

“As you well know, the Society has a need for discreet ways of moving goods into and out of Absalom. Over the last year we’ve developed some reliable routes through the sewers and caverns underneath the city and this has worked well for us until recently."

"Over the last few months, a tribe of kobolds calling themselves the Sewer Dragons started disrupting our supply with traps and ambushes. We know of several tribes of kobolds beneath Absalom, and generally, they are only a nuisance, but these have proved particularly troubling. They have blocked a few vital deliveries of late and some Pathfinders have disappeared. The Decemvirate is starting to get concerned. ”

“I need you to track down these Sewer Dragons and resolve this problem. I would prefer you make an effort to negotiate a truce of some sort with these pests. While I have little respect for the reptilian creatures who plague our sewers, I suspect if we exterminate them, some other threat will fill in the void they leave behind.”

Dreng pauses a moment to finish eating a peach, then continues. “You could wander around the sewers for days and not find one of these Sewer Dragons. Fortunately, I have found a resource for you. A few years ago they hired a Taldan scholar by the name of Emral Xarcious to tutor the tribal leader’s children. I suspect Xarcious can lead you to the Dragons."

“The Decemvirate has a shipment of antiquities coming next week and I expect this situation to be resolved by then. It’s up to you to ensure the shipment goes off with no hitches. There is no time to fool around—you need to get moving.”

"So where can we find this Xarcious fellow?"

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

“Xarcious had many vices, and I think he did a fair amount of gambling. I have heard he’s gotten into some problems down in the Puddles, but beyond that I’m not sure. If you have trouble finding him, you might look for a gentleman named Greeves. I understand Xarcious owes Greeves a substantial amount of money, and Greeves is likely to know where to find him as a result.”

Some of you may know something of the Sewer Dragons

Knowledge (Local) DC 10:
The Sewer Dragons are one of the more powerful kobold tribes in the sewers of Absalom.

Knowledge (Local) DC 15:
Kibizax, the Sewer Dragons’ chief, is a powerful sorcerer with a dragon ally who blasts the tribe’s foes to dust with lightning.

Knowledge (Local) DC 20:
The Sewer Dragons have a skilled trapmaster who is sought after by merchants and the wealthy in Absalom proper. It’s rumored that some of his most clever traps guard House Morilla and other noble resources.

Knowledge (Local) DC 25:
The Sewer Dragons’ chief is old and said to be planning to turn the tribe over to one of his two children, the elder daughter Yiddlepode and younger son Yippitok.

Knowledge (Local) DC 30:
Yippitok, also known as Trapmaster Tok, is the tribe’s trap crafter and a powerful alchemist.

Knowledge (Local) DC 35:
The chief ’s elder scion, Yiddlepode, is a spellcaster like her father, and is most likely to take over as the Sewer Dragons’ chief.

You also, before canvasing the area, may know something about Xarcious and Creeley Greeves:

Knowledge (Local) DC 15:
About a month ago Xarcious disappeared. The apartment where he lived was abandoned in a hurry. The day before he disappeared, he was seen arguing loudly with Creeley Greeves, a moneylender and bookie from the Puddles.

Knowledge (Local) DC 20:
Greeves runs his business out of a former watch station in the Puddles.

Knowledge (Local) DC 25:
Three days ago, Greeves was overheard arguing with a slaver about the sale of a skilled slave. Greeves did not seem happy with the outcome of the negotiation.

Auriferous, chairing the board, has little time for keeping up on the mundane activities of the city. Still, she listens to Piper with interest.

"First port of call would seem to be the former watch station in the Puddles. Why is it I always seem to end up crawling through sewers. I hope there are no deluded princes in this one."

"Venture Captain, if we are to broker an agreement with these creatures, it would help to have something they would value, be it food, or treasure, or agreements to either in the future. What are our bargaining constraints? Sure, we could get them to surrender after decimating them, but a lasting truce and even partnership would better benefit us all. Especially if we hope to use them as an informal 'cleaning crew' for our sewers..."

Hagnar has no other local knowledge and must rely on the others' recollections.

Drendle eyes the cleric (mostly his left eye), "“We can fence goods for them and get them supplies at reasonable prices. We can also get goods into the city for them. If the rumors I hear about alchemical substances and traps are true, perhaps we can purchase items they produce for our own use in the field. Under no circumstances do the Decemvirate approve any sort of tribute or ransom, however, so if that’s all the kobolds want, you’ll need to use your most convincing tactics to get them to change their minds.”

The Rogue continues, but visibly angry, "Then there is their skilled trapmaster who is sought after by merchants and the wealthy in Absalom proper. It’s rumored that some of his most clever traps guard House Morilla and other noble resources, a job that he stole from me! I hope to best this bastard by finding and disarming his traps and earn the title of best trap maker in Absalom. Know(local): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23

It's something of a coincidence that I just finished reading a description of this clan from a renowned scholar, Doctor M.E. Something-er-other. He described Kibizax, the Sewer Dragons’ chief, as a powerful sorcerer with a dragon ally and a peference for lightning. The tribe also has a skilled trapmaster who is sought after by merchants and the wealthy in Absalom proper. It’s rumored that some of his most clever traps guard House Morilla and other noble resources. A bit surprising given they're kobolds, but I guess money follows expertise. The "Sewer Dragons"'s chief is old and said to be planning to turn the tribe over to one of his two children, the elder daughter Yiddlepode and younger son Yippitok. The younger son, Yippitok, also known as Trapmaster Tok, is the tribe’s trap crafter and a powerful alchemist. Unfortunately the paper didn't speak mych of the elder daughter. I got the sense the author was run out of the tribe before he had a chance to speak with her. Much like what they'd do if they knew Hunwald was heading their way."
Or, just read the top spoilers up through DC 30

"As for information about Xarcious, I have little to add beyond what Piper has already told us."
I'll assume every reads the bottom set of spoilers.

"I'd guess our best stop is with Greeves. And perhaps he can offer some funding for this expedition, as our beloved Society rarely sees fit to combine work with payment. He's a moneylender and bookie from the Puddles, so maybe we should start there?"

"To the Puddles..."

Auri thinks for a moment or two.

"If we are to face lightning, my armour may be a vulnerability. Perhaps I should pick up a wand or a scroll that can help against that.."

She looks at Piper and Thiera. "Unless either of you know enchantments that might help protect us?"

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

Despite the generally dry weather in Absalom of late, the streets in the Puddles are filled ankle-deep with muck, and the local mosquito population seems to have doubled. The Puddles is miserable even on the best days. In spite of years of neglect, the old watch station Creeley Greeves adopted as his place of business has fared quite well. The grime-covered granite walls are still solid and the rusty bars on the windows are still thick enough to hold for years to come. An old, nearly illegible sign reads “Watch Station Four.” The only door to the station is closed.

Auri advances on the door and politely knocks.

Swotting at mosquitos, she wrinkles her nose. "And things only get worse from here in terms of the smell."

Hagnar looks around the building and the area. He didn't want to be surprised by some thug while they were all preoccupied with the door...

After a few moments, if the door is not answered, he will knock a bit harder. Just in case the man was in the back room. Or if there was any doubt that they wanted to speak with him.

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

The door opens, and on the other side is a pair of mean looking women equipped with matching chain shirts and longswords. They look less than happy to be answering the door. In the room is a man covered in axes. He bears a scar that makes his sneer permanent.

"Oi, you here to place a bet? Get in here and shut the door! Cayden's crotch how many of you are there? You better all have good coin!"

"Auri, you may be better off seeking your own solution to guard against lightning."

Thiera lifts her robes as the party trudges through the muck. She uses some prestidigitation to try and manage the worst of the mosquitos.

He looks at Thiera without any sign of understanding her point. Instead he nods to one of the women, who opens a door to another room. It looks like it was once a leader's quarters. A man matching Xarcious's description lies on a makeshift bed atop the room’s lone desk. The middle-aged Taldan looks very close to death from a disease. " Taking him off your hands would seem to be a kindness to both of you. Unless you are paying for a healer for him, he doesn't have long to live. And I suspect getting rid of a diseased body is not something that comes cheap."

She approaches the scholar and lays a gentle hand on him.

Lay on hands, removed sickened condition, but not stat points

I have randomly placed our Icons on the map, having Xarcious surrounded by Auri, Thiera and Hagnar. Pipes, August and Hun in the more open area of the room.

Hun looks around to see if he can see anything interesting in open ledgers, on the desks or tucked around that could lead to some power over the bookie operation; like a mathematical miscomputation in favor of the house etc.
(Hun has Mathematical Prodigy Trait)

The man looks over at the pitiful Xarcious and says, "He's your problem now. Fifty gold is likely more than I was going to get before he dies."

The others retire to the back room, leaving you alone. Xarcious is extremely grateful. He gives you mostly information you already know, but in a matter of minutes he gives you a key detail, "The Sewer Dragons have taken over a massive underground theater, covered over long ago by the growing city. The kobolds have closed off most of the tunnels that access the complex, but there is a passage from within the sewer system that is still accessible. I can give you directions, bu tI warn you that it’s usually well guarded."

He stops for a moment and asks about Greeves. When informed that he's now free the man positively beams, "I am truly and extremely grateful. Listen closely. Yiddlepode, the Sewer Dragon chief ’s eldest offspring, is likely open to bargaining with the Pathfinder Society; she is your best chance for a truce between the Society and the Dragons. Further, it’s likely you can catch Yiddlepode above ground in Absalom proper, as she often dons a magical disguise to sneak into one of the operas in the Ivy District. While on the streets and in the theaters of the city, Yiddlepode disguises herself as a halfling and is easy to spot because she only goes to poorly attended shows where her disguise is less likely to be uncovered, and her blue opera cloak stands out like a sore thumb."

Xarcious is now practically in tears, "I owe you my life. I hope this information was worth the risk of saving me."

"You are still a very sick man though. You must seek some more healing to ensure you don't spread the plague further." she adds sternly.

"So... The opera is it? That is a much better alternative to the sewers."

You guys are prolific posters! Sorry to slow you down - although not by much it seems!

As they depart, Hagnar takes out a wand and taps Greeves twice. "Yes. See a reputable healer about that rash...and be a bit more prudent in your future business dealings in the future."

"I have spent a lot of time in the Ivy District, all-be-it mostly after dark and trying not to be caught, ahem... I mean seen, there."
Hun continues,
"I think I can narrow down the number of opera houses we need to look into by at least half, and some of you more well-to-do in our number might be able to ask around to narrow it down more. I, on the other hand, prefer to keep a lower profile in the Ivy district for, well... personal reasons!"

Busy weekend (fiancee and I are closing on a house next week) I'll bring us to the opera later tonight or tomorrow.

There are three operas currently showing in the Ivy District and all compete for patrons. Armor and openly displayed weapons are not permitted inside most opera houses. The three operas currently gracing the stage are: a traveling Andoren troupe’s performance of the Chelish history Fall from Glory; a local diva’s rendition of Serpent’s Song; and a comedic opera called The Trouble with Swans.

You've got 3 days to wrap this up, so you decide to see if you can get a feel for where Yiddlepode might be:

Gather Information DC 15):
The Trouble with Swans is a hugely popular show performed by a largely gnome troupe. Serpent’s Song i s a tragedy about a dragon who falls in love with a princess.

Gather Information DC 20):
Crowds are expected to be thick for Fall from Glory, as Chelish operas are known to often feature actual bloodshed in place of special effects.

Gather Information DC 25):
The only showings of Serpent’s Song that aren’t sold out for a month solid are its midnight performances and even they are said to be crowded.

Gather Information DC 30):
The debut of Fall from Glory was unpopular, as the Andoren troupe is said to have replaced much of the bloodshed in this traditionally gory Chelish history with illusions and sleight of hand.
