The fall rains have come early this year, and a chill wind blows off the waters of Absalom’s harbor, bringing with it the smell of a storm somewhere far off at sea. Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng hurries down the street in a most unusual outfit for the aging Venture-Captain: some sort of blue military uniform complete with a green sash displaying a pair of ornate medals and a black umbrella.

“Ah, there you all are,” he half-mutters to himself. “Is everyone here?” Without waiting for an answer, he turns on his heels and heads off at a brisk pace, occasionally turning around to make sure everyone is keeping up.

Nobility or Local DC 12:

Dreng is wearing a dress uniform of a junior officer in the Taldan Navy.

Nobility or Local DC 17:

he is wearing two service medals: a Combat Action Ribbon and a Counter-Espionage Ribbon, the latter of which is rumored to only be awarded to members of the Lion Blades, Taldor’s secretive espionage organization.

“You’re probably wondering where I’m dragging you, eh? Seven years ago I sent young agents, YOU, on a preliminary exploration of the necropolis below the Drownyard in the Precipice Quarter. The Drownyard is the name that was given to the old Tri-Towers School, once home to some of Absalom’s wealthiest progeny. It was destroyed in the great earthquake of 4698 ar, and we thought that all of the children, teachers, and staff had perished.”

“But let be back up a bit. Eight years ago, you discovered an ancient necropolis under the Drownyard. It dates back to the third century AR, and if you know anything about Absalom’s history, you’ll know that we know almost nothing about those early years. It took me almost an entire year of negotiating with the parents of the children who died in the Tri-Towers Yard to convince them to grant us access to the site, and when we did, what did we find, do you remember? A lot of spooky stuff: undead, haunts, and some nasty bugs. But you also found something completely unexpected: a survivor. A little slip of a girl named Junia Dacilane somehow survived in a death-like state for 10 years. The only thing that kept her alive was the ring of sustenance that she had found among the crypts and wore on her finger. Junia’s mother, Lady Miranda Dacilane, was of course beside herself when you pulled her living daughter from the ruins and she vowed to not only give the Society full access to the property, but personally underwrite our archaeological efforts there. Soon thereafter I set up an archaeological dig at the Drownyard, and we’ve been pulling out fascinating fragments from Absalom’s early history ever since. Every year I visit Lady Dacilane to renew our contract to maintain the dig, but this year it seems that she wants us to jump through an additional hoop. She wants YOU specifically, the agents who started it all, to escort her daughter back to the Drownyard. It seems that Junia’s become a bit obsessed with her alma mater, and since the Precipice Quarter is no place for pampered young noblewomen, she needs an escort. Think you can manage that?”

He quickly adds, “Oh, and don’t forget to call the Drownyard the Tri-Towers Yard while we’re at Dacilane Manor. No one who lost children in the earthquake likes to be reminded of that tragedy… even the ones who got their child back.”

Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (local) DC 10:

The Precipice Quarter was once a wealthy neighborhood called Beldrin’s Bluff, until an earthquake in 4698 AR broke several blocks of the district into the sea and killed hundreds.

Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (local) DC 15:
After the earthquake, the people of Beldrin’s Bluff moved away. Many people in Absalom believe the district is cursed, and restless undead and vermin roam the streets at night. The most prominent locations in Beldrin’s Bluff were the Tri-Tower’s Yard, an academy for the children of Absalom’s wealthy and powerful, and the Arboretum Arcanis, which displayed rare plants from all over the Inner Sea.

Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (local) DC 20:
The Tri-Towers Yard is haunted. The spirits of the children who perished in the earthquake are unable to reach their final rest. For nearly a decade, a man named Deris Marlinchen, the father of one of the young victims, wandered the yard, speaking to spirits no one else could see. Since his departure seven years ago, the haunts at the old school have grown increasingly malevolent.

Dreng continues to walk...

I guess Silgil can afford some nice duds. He will stick a crowbar into his wallet and pry loose enough cash for some decent DWARVEN clothing. Not that ostentatious crud humans wear. Not quite up to the mark of a noble's outfit, more like the formal clothing of a successful scholar.

But it still fits... just barely! Seems I've been eating too many figs.

As Renn's attention returns to Dreng's briefing, he considers inquiring why they weren't summoned in the middle of the night, but then something catches his interest.

"Ah yes, Junia. Is she a full Lady now? I had forgotten, but I do imagine she'd feel some sort of... gratuity for her saviors. Much like the Blakros family, as I've been led to understand they've even brought members of our Society into the flock, so to speak..."

Dreng seems to not pay much attention to the party's chatter undtil the 10 minute walk is complete.

Dacilane Manor is an imposing four-story townhouse of heavy masonry with a parapet roof that is festooned with numerous leering, demonic gargoyles. After knocking on the door, a middle-aged halfling woman in a large apron answers it. “Please come in. My lady will join you momentarily in the drawing room.”

If she recognizes any of you (Dreng included) she does not show it.

The interior of Dacilane Manor is just as imposing as you remember it. A wide foyer with a grand staircase leads to the second floor, while open double-doors lead into the drawing room. Heavy black draperies cover all the windows, shrouding the manor in shadows. All of the furniture in the common areas is oversized, expensive, and gothic, made of dark-stained mahogany wood.

The lady enters only a few minutes later. She is similarly as tall stern-looking, yet attractive as you remember. She's a Chelaxian woman with sharp features, a fair complexion, and black hair accented with gray and white. She is dressed in a well-made, floor-length black gown streaked through with crimson. A plain looking silver pentagram necklace is her only jewelry.

Dreng immediately jumps up to greet her, bowing and kissing her hand in a formal fashion. He then quickly introduces you before launching into a prepared speech about the importance of Lady Dacilane’s ongoing support of the Society’s activities and the many important artifacts they have been able to recover from the Tri-Towers Yard necropolis. Lady Dacilane listens politely, making a few pro-forma inquiries into several details about the management of the site before getting to the heart of the negotiation, which means turning to you.

“As I am sure Master Dreng has already informed you, I have a particular request of the Pathfinder Society this year. My daughter Junia has recently celebrated her eighteenth birthday, but she maintains a certain obsession with the traumatic events that befell her at the Tri-Towers Yard so many years ago. I have stopped her from sneaking out of the manor and visiting that place several times, and I feel that her past is keeping her from fully embracing her future. I would ask that you accompany her to the gods-forsaken Precipice Quarter and let her see her fill of the decay and misery. Perhaps those sights will cure her of her unnatural obsessions.”

Her demeanor has soften in the intervening years, and she looks on as if to answer questions.

The lady seems comforted by your assurances. "Junia’s experiences during and after the earthquake were terrible, and they have left lasting mental scars. Despite my efforts and those of some of Absalom’s best healers, I have been unable to truly help her. Nevertheless, it is time for her to put her childhood experiences behind her and face her adult responsibilities. Junia did not age mentally or physically while sleeping in the crypt. It is a mystery that has never been explained. Even though we should be celebrating her twenty-eight birth year, she appears and acts like a child of eighteen.”

Renn brightens as Lady Dacilane enters.

"My lady! Have you donned your daughter's ring... you look younger and more radiant than our last meeting!"

He bows deeply, ready to take her hand if the formality is available.

With the older matron present, he maintains his focus on her despite learning of the technicality that Junia is twenty-eight instead of eighteen.

He smiles at Lady Dacilane (the elder).

"Perhaps you should join our little expedition? A little bonding with young Junia and an opportunity for us all to get to know each other a little better?"

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

"I would not do such things as go with you. It is not my place, and it is yours, though I thank you for your kind words. Beside, Junia has a particular affection for the Pathfinder Society, most likely because it was you who rescued her from the necropolis. It is my hope that she will be more forthcoming about her condition with you. Now if there are no more questions, I'll call her down."

Lady Dacilane’s daughter comes bounding down the stairs and into the sitting room a few moments after he mother calls her. She has her mother’s height, black hair, and fine facial features, but that’s where the similarities end. Unlike her mother’s carefully coiffed hair, Junia’s is short and practical, and she carries herself with a confident and unladylike swagger. She is dressed in grey breeches, knee-high leather boots, a white cotton shirt, and an azure blue riding coat with tails with a golden eagle pin on the lapel. Beneath her coat, it is clear that she is wearing a mithral chain shirt.

Knowledge Local DC 15, or automatic for Liberty's Edge, Andoran:
You immediately recognize that Junia is attempting to look like a member of the Andoran Eagle Knights.

Upon arriving in the drawing room, Junia clicks her heels in a military manner and greets her mother with a mischievous grin. Lady Dacilane immediately turns bright red with embarrassment, reprimanding her daughter for appearing in such a “ridiculous outfit in front of our guests”, and then throws up her hands and storms out of the room without another word. Junia "introduces" herself to each of you as not Junia but “J., like the letter”,

Formal introductions completed, she relaxes. "It's so good to see you all again! I can't believe the Society managed to assemble the very same team! This is awesome!" She greats you all with a warm hug.

Dreng excuses himself at this point, claiming that he is needed back at the Grand Lodge. Before he leaves, he hands over a large, iron key to you, telling you that it is the very same key to the wrought iron gates to the Tri-Towers Yard that he entrusted to you years ago. He warns you that although the necropolis below has been cleared of undead since your last trip, the partially restored surface structure still holds a dangerous haunt. “Try to stay away from there,” he mutters, “we’ve tried to eliminate it several times, but it keep coming back. If you do need to go in there, take a look in the supply closet, you may find it useful.”

Once the Venture Captain leaves, J. picks up a backpack from a stool in the corner and pulls out a kukri, which she sheathes at her hip. She then straps on the backpack and looks expectantly at you. “Well, shall we go? I’m ready when you are. Oh wait, can you guys sign this first?!” She pulls out a copy of the Pathfinder Chronicles, and it happens to be the volume that details her rescue.

Sorry for the extreme info dump.

Silgil mutters a few incomprehensible words. The ONLY reason he left his study in the first place is because he had to. He was still working through what he learned from the self-styled Prince of Augustana's notes, though he had to admit it was high time he earned his keep.

Renn continues along, wondering if there's anything he should be aware of with the young lady... like is she leading them into certain danger as the mere Pathfinder Society pawns they are?

"Well of course I'll sign!" Helane actually smiles when given the chronicle and she happily signs it. Somehow her sense of self worth and importance becomes even more insufferable as they continue their journey with J.

"I spend most of my time running the family trade and maintaining our profits I'm afraid. I've hardly had time to even return to any of my magical studies." Helane frowns momentarily but puts her noble face on again just as quick.

"Tell me dear, do you always dress like the Eagle Knights? Or is that just for special occasions?"

Nemrok smiles at the "young" J. and says Of course, it will be my honor to sign it !

Which he dones with his well drawing signature.

You've grown up well as I can see. I like the hair but less the dress, if I may call your outfit that.

He adds after Helane's question You know that the Eagle Knight are well known, "liberty fighter" and if some people like it, some other don't it will be more prudent to not wear that type of outfit outside.
Some chelaxian could take offense of this and some Andoran too, thinking you try to mock the uniform.
But yes, to the Tri-Towers Ward J. !

Renn doesn't see much in her demeanor to be concerned with. The comments about the Eagle Knight attire are met with a smile and a wink.

The trip is light-hearted and her attitude is contagious. You cut between a couple of stores to get to the yard more quickly.

That's when things change.

No one suspects anything until you hear J yelp. You turn to see a man shoving her, "OI rich girl. How about a good time?" As highly trained Pathfinders you prepare for a fight.

J shouts, "Get away from me!" As she shouts a glass bottle on the ground next to her begins to shake and vibrate. "NOW! As she yells the final word the bottle rockets forth and slams into the man's face dropping him.

J is as shocked as you. Soon the mans friends take note. All of them are dressed like Chelish marines, and they look none-to-happy.

"That was a mistake wizard girl!"

"I'm not a wizard!" She pleads, "It wasn't me!"

But they're not listening...

"Interesting..." is all Helane has time to mutter before the group of men fall upon them looking for a fight.

She steps back from the aggressor in front of her and points a finger at him. The ring on her finger glows for a moment and a burst of magic flies free, hitting the man square in the chest.

Helane's spell nearly ends the man, but he fights on. J screams again, and again a piece of refuse rockets towards the man. This time though, out of the corners of your eyes you catch fleeting glimpses of the blue-tinged, ephemeral outline of a boy with hollow eyes.... When you look, it's not there. J's attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 The bottle shatters against the wall.

The chelish men push back with a strong offense. "What kind of freak are you?!" they shout after seeing the same vision.

The one hit by the magic missle steps forward, ignoring the half-orc, and tries to take Helane out: Short Sword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 but the stab goes wide.

The one with red hair goes after J herself! Short Sword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 miss!

the man with the yellow tunic goes after Silgil: Short Sword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 miss!

The final two gang up on Renn (Green draws an AoO if you have combat reflexes.) Short Sword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 miss!

Short Sword: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 2 = 20 for DMG: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 and he stabs the man in the thigh!

Name calling, huh. I'll show them name calling.

"You messed with the wrong dwarf, you insignificant little toad! Would you like to be turned into one?" he adds after he connects.

Don't know why, but worms like him always seem to think its an easy matter for any old wizard to turn people into toads. Makes a fairly decent threat even if impossible. I love to see the expression on their faces after I announce it too.

He waits to see if he will be disappointed or entertained by the fellows reaction.

Renn grips the fresh wound on his thigh.

"Really? Chelish marines are so rude..."

Taking a step back so he can keep them all in his sight, Renn smirks for a moment.

"Oh, I know just the song we need. Something Andoran.

Clearing his throat, he begins a rousing performance of an Andoran naval ballad for his Chelish audience.

"Blue of the Mighty Deep; Gold of God's Sun
Let these colors be till all of time be done, done, done,
On seven seas we learn Navy's stern call:
Faith, Courage, Service true, with Honor, Over Honor, Over All!"

Nemrok looks at the Marines and at J. I know this outfit will put us into troubles.

Showing his symbol of Asmodeus, he shoots at them

In Asmodeus' name ! Stops ! You are Chelish Marines, not Andoran's ruffiants. Go back to your ships and represent proudly your Queen, or face the consequences !
