Hunwald Stormheart |
As the rogue walks in, he address the new face in the room first. "Well met, Master Dwarf. I am Hunwald Stormheart, but my friends call me Hun. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
Then turning to his frequent traveling companion, Hun address the beautiful elven wizard. "And my dearest Thiera... so good to see you again, you are looking lovely as ever. But, alas... I have a question for you! Do you sleep on your stomach? No. Well then can I?!?!?"
Thiera |
"My dear Hunwald. Lest you think I lack the power to turn you into a toad, please remember that it would be even easier to poison you, should you attempt anything untoward. We could practice that if you like. It's something we could do together that I might find pleasant! She smiles pleasantly as she says this, half-joking, yet firm enough to be completely clear that the sun will fade and the material plane will collapse before she considers a romance with Hunwald.
Oggil Redhand |
Oggil watches the byplay of the humans with confused amusement.
"In the lands where there is no sun, it is said that opposites attract as iron to a lodestone. Mr Stormheart, could it be that the fair Thiera is ..."
He pauses searching for the right words "playing the game of hard to get?"
He bows deeply to the elf. "And Ms Thiera, if I may let me be known that as in the words the Emerald Sage 'Is the stone unhappy with how it is? No. Be as the stone.'"
August Dupine |
"Well, next time we run into Guaril, I expect it won't go well. Still, I don't think I should have tried to drown all my sorrows in one night... my head is killing me! Hun, are you trying new material out on Thiera again? You know.... uh, who's the new guy?"
Oggil Redhand |
"The society has need of Ms Auriferous's talents in the Grand Lodge. Something about a large attack that recently took place and bolstering the defenses there. It was thought that my skills may assist the current mission."
He looks slightly dubiously at the array of experienced pathfinders before him. "Though there may have been an error in the paperwork.."
Guess I know where I'll be dumping some GM credit!
Realizing he may have misunderstood August the dwarf continues.
"I am named Oggil Redhand. And I come with a small fraction of the wisdom of the scarab sages to assist in what ways I may."
August Dupine |
"Sages, eh? Ok, welcome aboard. Name's 'Dupine'. We will miss Auri's strength, to be sure... and perhaps her tendency to keep us on the straight and narrow."
I was actually thinking about applying the Fang credit here and leveling up to 4, but it looks to me like we are a perfect 3 right now. I assume we are playing up (we like getting our butt's kicked), but if not, then I won't level... I can't recall what we decided, but I am good either way.
Thiera |
"Dear Master Dwarf," Thiera says, "Might I suggest your be the target of Hunwald's attention this adventure before you tell me to 'be as the stone'. You may find it more difficult and less endearing than you suspect. Besides, I believe you're his type."
Thiera smiles, enjoying the gentle ribbing between comrades.
Oggil Redhand |
Oggil pulls himself up to his full height. Still substantially lower than the shortest of the rest of the group.
"I have completed my training. This is not my first society mission Ms Azine." He then addresses Thiera.
"My apologies, you misunderstand the reference. I was referring to myself. Being happy being a dwarf. As to the thought of congress with a human Let me ask you - Does the Swallow mate with the Duck?"
Hunwald Stormheart |
"Sweet Theria, I am a man who knows something about odds and percentages. And though the chances are ever so slight, it is the chase I prefer far more than the capture. And know that there are very few who could turn my wandering eye to focus on a singular vision of beauty, but you lass possess such power, wether I am a toad in your hand or a companion by your side!"

Oggil Redhand |
"I rather thought that 'swallow' applied itself to Hun." mentions the dwarf with a straight face.
Thiera |
"Ah, yes, Master Dwarf," says Thiera, as she tries to hide a smile behind her hand. "But you are one who never has to duck."
"Perhaps a different metaphor is in order?"
Dungeon Master S |
This is by far the best pre-adventure banter. I'll start once Oggil is confirmed free. (I'll post as quickly as possible in Hydra's Fang.)
Thiera |
Thiera stares off into the distance, permitting her mind to wander as she actively avoids noticing any ogling from the males present.
After waiting for some time, she pulls out a book and begins to read.
Dungeon Master S |
The Pathfinder Society has turned its attention to the Ruby Phoenix Tournament—a world-renowned fighting competition, held once every ten years in the city of Goka on the eastern continent of Tian Xia. More specifically, the Decemvirate is interested in the incredible prizes available to the tournament’s winner—a choice of treasure from the legendary vaults of Hao Jin, the Ruby Phoenix herself. As part of the preparations for the tournament, Pathfinder Society agents have been deployed across the Inner Sea and beyond to seek out forgotten lore, allies, and magical items to be used by the Society’s tournament representatives.
Venture-Captain Amara Li, leader of the Lantern Lodge and Goka native, has uncovered information about one such item hidden amid the reaches of the Wall of Heaven—an Iroran relic known as the Braid of a Hundred Masters. Organizing the search from her base in the Dragon Empires, she intends to send a group of Pathfinders to the high mountain range in search of the braid’s ancient home: the Clouded Path Monastery. The two-week-long journey to the mountains began in the cosmopolitan city of Goka, passed through the surrounding villages and farmlands, and led thousands of feet up into the tallest mountain range on Golarion; all that remains is the final day’s journey up from the base camp.
You may know a bit before you get there:
The action begins as your 2 guides Xue Ho and Hai Xuan declare a stop for the day. Tomorrow is a full day of climbing before you reach the Monastery. You've been told it's going to be COLD and you also are told the air is thin enough that it could be troublesome for the less hale.

"Also, there's going to be quite a bit of climbing involved. I recommend we stock up on climbing gear, and I'll prepare some useful spells for the worst parts."
In addition to my other scribing, I want to pick up Spider Climb and Invisibility before we go. Would a wand of Jump be a worthwhile investment for 2 PP?

Feel free to shop and talk. Still need to know most everyone's level. Once you are ready, just tel your guides and we can ascend.

Thiera conjures a brief illusion of a map and some illuminated historical scrolls.
"I am familiar with this monastery from my studies. The Clouded Path Monastery stands a strong day’s climb above a base camp halfway up its mountain. While below the permafrost of its particular mountain’s peak, the monastery is known for its thin air and cold nights."
"Those of us that completed the adventures in Irrisen may be well adjusted to the cold by this time."
Remember the boon that protects from cold temperatures!
"But the cold won't be our only complication. Altitude and lack of oxygen may complicate matters."
"This may be why no one has seen the monks of the Clouded Path Monastery in years. In the past, the monastery often sent a small group of them to the mountain’s base camp to trade for the goods the monks could not produce for themselves in the harsh mountain environment. But there have been no such parties for some time."
"And without the protection of the monks, a demon of ice and snow made flesh— called Shang Xu by locals—prowls the mountains. Since the monks disappeared, it has come down to raid the farms and villages on several occasions. There is great fear in the land."
Thiera releases the conjured blackboard and projected slide show of history. Too much like being in school.
Oggil Redhand |
Oggil looks in amazement at his new companions.
"As a bear wears its coat to stay warm, so will I purchase a fury skin to keep my dwarven hide warm." he then adds "But my beard will do for my face."
As August purchases shurken, the dwarf eyes them up.
"As the master said of the Kasatha- 'They be handy'"
He'll tag along and purchase some regular shuriken himself.
Hunwald Stormheart |
"As a bear wears its coat to stay warm, so will I purchase a fury skin to keep my dwarven hide warm." he then adds "But my beard will do for my face."
Hun adds,
"And witch's titties in brass brassieres and both cheeks of a well diggers arse... now that's cold! HA! And you guys thought I told a lot of stories! Master Oggil has stories for days my friends!"Hun also has some gold to spend, but I just don't have the time currently to do it correctly and add everything to his player sheet. I believe that he will purchase a masterworks sling and max out the Tamran chronicle ammo... may also purchase some healing potions from that chronicle too. Will try and get it all copacetic this weekend.
Dungeon Master S |
Still waiting on the Bullwhip/Colleen decision, but I figure we'll start now.
Nodding to your two guides you begin a comfortable if cold hike. Xue Ho and Hai Xuan are locals from the farming villages below. The two are experienced mountaineers and are familiar with this stretch of the Wall of Heaven. The two men, both well under 6 feet in height, have lean frames and skin prematurely aged through exposure to the mountain winds. The pair, though only capable of broken Common, have proven to be friendly and knowledgeable guides.
The base camp site, only a few hundred feet above the forest line that covers the lower reaches of the Wall of Heaven, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding farmlands, far below. The half-flooded terraced farmlands appear silver and mirrored in the late afternoon light. The camp itself is little more than a trio of unmaintained wooden shacks surrounding the remnants of a large firepit and a fallen wooden corral fence to the east.
It is at this point the guides go no further. They explain that the mountains are too dangerous. Predators abound, and the dangers aren't worth it. They give you clear directions and then turn around. You estimate that you've still got a few hours of climbing before it's time to make camp...
So Pathfinders, it's time to.... find the path. Feel free to prep, set a marching order, make survival checks etc. We don't need to spend too much time here, just let me know if there's any buffing you want to do. Once you tell me, we'll head out.
Oggil Redhand |
Oggil waves a farewell to the guides.
"What a view!! " he says, his eyes drinking in the stark beauty of the mountainside.
He pulls his furs close around him though, so while the view is appreciated, one might suspect the dwarf doesn't quite so enjoy the cold.
"As the icicle before the bear, so would your brass be before this cold." he replies to Hun.
August Dupine |
August Dupine enjoys the climb, conversing in Tien with the guides along the way, happy to stretch those mental muscles.
As the guides leave, he checks his climbing gear, and asks Piper to use his Mage Armor wand on him. If it's so dangerous, it seems a solid precaution.
Piper Azine |
Piper grumbles, but uses the wand on Dupine.
"So, who here wants to lead the way?"
Casting Mage Armor on myself too. Can we all share the same climbing kit, or should we bring our own? Also, I adjusted my spell selection to include a couple of Spider Climbs and a Jump if necessary.
Dungeon Master S |
I put a map up. Assume you're travelling left to right. Go ahead and place yourselves.
August Dupine |
I think we can use the same climbing kit.
@Piper, you can use your spell slot for something else and just use Dupine's mage armor wand for yourself as often as you need it. It should last a good long while! Same goes for Endure Elements for anyone who needs it.
Piper Azine |
No thanks. The wand only lasts an hour. With a pearl of power, mine will last all day.

Hun forgoes the offer of the endure elements this time, but makes sure that he sticks close to Dupine just in case!
Dungeon Master S |
As the party prepares to climb they find themselves on a straight forward path. It's just a very dangerous one.
Indeed, just a few minutes after the guides leave Piper and Hun spy a pair of hungry snow leopards!
They each give a shout, alerting the rest of the party and foiling the cats' surprise.

Hunwald, suddenly sorry for all of his unwelcome advances against Thiera, rushes to her aid, hoping against hope that this valiant gesture will offer him some redemption.
He draws twin short swords—he'd considered naming them for his personality faults, "Arrogance" and "Chicanery" —and charges the closest beast.

Thiera's missile is a solid hit, and the leopard looks like it's probably had enough, but it also looks like it's starving. This is a fight to the death.
The cat tries to get out of the pinch while savaging Hun:
