Ferox Kerr |
Seeing Sandor approach, Ferox finishes his ministration on Morkeleb and beckons the dwarf over.
Sandor, come! Let me see to your wounds. I wasn't sure how well you fared in that fight. I couldn't get a good look at your wounds as you sped by. By Abadar, you've become damn spry since pulling from that deck.
CSW: 3d8 + 14 ⇒ (2, 3, 4) + 14 = 23 102

Requested Spellcraft from Slack: OH NOES UNTRAINED!!!
Morkeleb, please come look at this. It's something, but I don't know what I'm looking at.
Botting Mork
Morkeleb comes in and casts it for himself and looks.
Spellcraft:1d20 + 25 ⇒ (1) + 25 = 26
Dungeon Master S |
Despite him spacing it, Morkeleb senses an aura of Conjuration (Creation) on the ceiling.
Morkeleb the Mighty |
I've got an available Stone Shape. (notation is this: a * means it's one prepped. a ~ means it was prepped, but cast--needed that for Pearls of Power. I'd used one Stone shape, but had prepped 2, so after "Stone Shape" was *~ get it?? And for complexity, *(B) means it's a prepped Bouncing spell)
Morkeleb the Mighty |
I have not learned True Seeing, nor do I have a scroll. I do, however, have a scroll of Analyze Dweomer...
he pulls it out, and casts it.
Dungeon Master S |
Morkeleb uses the scroll's magic and looks about, eventually it is a Phase Door spell cast by a wizard slightly more powerful than he is.
Yes, you can try UMD
Odric the Stout |

And how do we get through it?
Odric hefty his lightly used battering ram and eyes the ceiling suspiciously. Like a barroom wench who plays hard-to-get, this ceiling is only inviting Odric's continued and intensifying attentions. Unlike with the barroom wench though, in this case Odric is absolutely looking to force the point in the face of Resistance.
Thorgrym the Tracker |
While the others start pondering how to use the phase door, and Odric thinks about forcing himself upon it...
The two mutes in the background have healing business to "discuss". Grym pulls out his Whack'em Stick of Healing and begins to beat Sandor soundlessly with it.
CLWs 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Sandor now up to 161 HPs

Grym, Ferox already healed Sandor. You should keep all those charges.
Morkeleb the Mighty |
What's a PHase door?
Morkeleb looks at the ceiling, and puts a staying hand on Odric's arm. The magic in the ceiling is an ethereal gateway into another area. We may be able to figure out how to use it...but activating strange magic items or spells like this is not in my training. in other words, I have a low UMD

So... There's some kind of command word or gesture? Maybe the knowledge is somewhere else in the castle. Or... Could a spell of Identify divine us the answer?

"Are any of your fiancees able to navigate this problem?" Odric asks the question rather generally because with the whirlwind of betrothals he is actually a bit uncertain who is engaged to which otherworldly babe.
"Cricktik, I apologize but I don't really know anything about you or your kind. Forgive me if this is rude, but do you have any way to get through a Phase Door?" Odric realizes he may have in fact been a bit hasty in recruiting Ferox' sworn assistant and steals a quick glance at the Inquisition.
Seeing no immediate bristling indignation, Odric continues with a question that seems a bit off-topic, but has been bothering him, "and uh... what are you exactly? Where did you come from? Do you have a family? What do you eat?..." once he starts, the Warrior's natural curiosity takes over.
Rather than bombard Cricktik with rapid fire questions, if he is willing to engage in conversation, Odric would like to 'interview' him conversationally. If we can hold a bit of a back and forth rather than a link to whatever the hell he is it would be cool :)

3 charges spent. Gaius is 100%
Dungeon Master S |
UMD will do it. Identify will not. Wish can also do it. The formian has no way, though he reminds you that he prefers telepathy because your language sounds atonal. Legend Lore could also do it. There are also a host of psychic spells, but none of you are.

Sandor Stouthammer |
Sandor shakes the Inquisitor's hand and pulls him in for a bro hug with a big smile and nod of thanks.
He then listens to Morkelb's esplainin of the magic stuff.
You can allow other creatures to use the phase door by setting some triggering condition for the door. Such conditions can be as simple or elaborate as you desire. They can be based on a creature's name, identity, or alignment, but otherwise must be based on observable actions or qualities. Intangibles such as level, class, HD, and hit points don't qualify.
While the rest try to figure out the puzzle Sandor has an idea. He goes back to the body of the devil, takes his axe out and makes a few quick chops. Taking the devil's wing and holding it up to the back of Odric's celestial armor he points at the phase door.
Line of thinking, maybe Critik can translate. Initial assesment was that Togomor put the phase door there. Upon looking at the map (I'm using Sandor's Engineering here) the overlay shows the room above us totally isolated. The phase door is the only way in and out, so I'm sure it has been here longer than Illeosa and her crew. Do we remember any thing from Cressida, or the Seneshal? What would someone do while building a castle to make as the key?

So... Where is Formia, Cricktik?
To the non-telepaths in the room, Odric shows all the classic signs of imminent gaseous devastation. A furrowed brow, unexplained leaning, beading sweat, and a thousand-yard stare.
Several alarmed members of the Upturned Cup begin fumbling for Doctor's Masks, with the blessedly effective magical air filtration they were imbued with. These masks were kept for just this contingency- but Odric's fantastic bowels were not brewing a cloud of doom. Rather, the warrior was concentrating on focusing his Mind Powers trying converse with Cricktik in a medium this stranger in a strange land was more comfortable with.
Morkeleb the Mighty |
Hold...if I understand correctly, a Phase Door spell simply creates a conduit through which the caster may pass through a solid object. It does not 'dimension door' him to a new location, it simply allows him to pass through. That being the case, this ceiling should otherwise be solid stone. And I did prepare Stone Shape again today.
Morkeleb decides to give it a go, and casts Stone Shape to make a hole big enough for ingress & egress through the ceiling.
Cricktik |
Are the spirits in the deck totally gone or can we talk with them? Would Venster know anything, since he's been in the castle for a while?
Cricktik looks at the big warrior with a little curiosity before replying.
My homeworld was a paradise, where the hives ruled both above and below. Lush, verdant jungles covered my world, and vast networks of tunnels carved through the underworld. I have not seen my homeworld in many years.
He pauses for a moment to think, then continues, I eat much as you do. My family is the hive.
Dungeon Master S |
The spirits in the deck are totally gone.
As Cricktik explains, Morkeleb opens a hole in the ceiling large enough to put a man through...
Dungeon Master S |
This room contains a large bookshelf filled with dozens of books and scrolls. A desk and chair stand nearby. Sitting on the desk is a single large book with a black leather cover. The walls of this study have been decorated—recently by the look—with dozens of spiky runes.
Looking about there is a copy of a contract with the Red Mantis for protection. The scrolls are telling. Drafts of plans to murder the king, subvert Sabina, frame Blackjack, unleash the Plague of the Seven Days, and more plots that you've never heard of.
...and that's all with just a cursory look.
Sandor Stouthammer |
OHHHHH a treasure trove of info. Sandor speaks Common, Dwarven, Terran, and Undercommon
Percpetion (+2 for stone): 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (16) + 20 = 36
The Dwarf looks around to see if he can find anything interesting. Especially looking for the plans of the statues of Ileosa that they are building by taking stone from the tower. Do any of the documents mention the blood collecting?
SIFT
School divination; Level bard 0, inquisitor 0
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range 30 ft.
Area one 10-ft. cube
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw none; Spell Resistance no
You examine an area at range as if you were searching for fine details with the Perception skill. Make a Perception check with a –5 penalty, modified as normal for conditions. No penalty is applied for distance. Apply the result against the DC for any hidden features, such as secret doors, traps, or hidden treasure. You must be able to see the area you are attempting to search, and you only find details that can be perceived with sight or touch. Sift detects only objects and features, not actual creatures.

I'm assuming others will join in:
Ferox: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (3) + 25 = 28 (Traps +2)

Grym**: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (13) + 25 = 38 (Includes Favored)
Morkeleb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16
Odric: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
Sandor Stouthammer |
Sandor looks at Gaius, and remembers that there are fakes of the Thief Cleric around.
He walks over to Critik Thank you for being a translator, and welcome to The Upturned Cup. Would you please ask Gaius how we should mark him so that we know it's him and not a fake? New tattoo, scar, arcane mark? I sure would hate for this info to get stolen before it can get used in convicting Illeosa.
Dungeon Master S |
Morkeleb's Detect Magic lights up the room in his eyes. He manages to find the source of all the auras with the exception of a single Illusion (Glamer) aura that he can't seem to pinpoint.
this room turns up several powerful magic items, including a scroll of banishment, two scrolls of binding, a scroll of etherealness, a scroll of gate, a scroll of greater planar ally, a scroll of greater planar binding, and a scroll of plane shift. A copy of Ileosa’s OFFICIAL agreement with the Red Mantis assassins is found here as well—a document that has little monetary value but is priceless as hard evidence of Ileosa’s true nature even to her most devoted followers. An elegant teak and ivory potion rack (itself worth 900 gp) contains 3 doses of fool’s leprosy (which her notes seem to indicate are how she killed the king) left over from the king’s poisoning, along with a short note on how to administer the venom.
This is all independent of the big book...

Ferox looks up and over to Sandor.
Sandor, excellent idea. I have a solution that Gaius might approve of. Nothing permanent, but it'll let us know who the real Gaius is. With your permission, Gaius.
If Gaius is cool with it, Ferox will cast Brand on Gaius, wherever he'd like.

Morkeleb shares the info on the "spoils" above (mostly scrolls...muahaha)
take a closer look at this book. what is the nature of the tome?
Don't get greedy. Many of those are on my spell list, too, bub.
Sandor Stouthammer |
Sandor nods in acceptance of Gaius' bad kitty paws as proof.
A few things that I don't want to get lost in the shuffle of many different thoughts and posts.
- 1. Info on the blood collecting?
- 2. Missing Ishanti (the priest who's supposed to be in the castle.
- 3. We are pretty resource depleted right now, with a good bit of castle. Odric recommends that we go to the Keg and Eagle. What do the casters say? Can we withstand another attack from MMD's (Manti, Maidens, or Devils). I leave it up to the casters.
Gaius Lirsiiv |
I want to hear about the book first, then decide. If that's the proof we need for Infernal collusion, we can head to the dungeons, bust out the priest and get out of here.
I'm pretty spent. I need to rest soon. We don't have to leave the castle though--we have a scroll of Magnificant Manse.

Yes, lets finish up here at the castle.
Odric the Stout |
Before we continue though, one of our casters is 'pretty spent' and I bet Morkeleb is too after (the DM fizzled out all his best spells) all his magicking.
Odric looks around appraisingly, We are in pretty good shape as far as health, thanks to Grym's whack'em stick of healing and Gaius' spells.
A couple unconscious deep-knee bends and a twisting torso move to crack his back later, Odric continues, If Morkeleb and Gaius give their imprimatur, I am OK with continuing. But if we do need to rest I'd like to insist we head to my humble establishment. I have some pressing business there, and it will give me a chance to do a bit of shopping as well.
Odric tilts his head towards Morkeleb questioningly.
